View Full Version : Intelligence rating in text sims

One skill that I'm a little uncomfortable having rated in my sports text sims is that of intelligence. I know that intelligence can show up nearly anywhere as far as the other ratings go (mostly for the better), but there's something about seeing a player with "Intelligence = 2" (out of 100 :( ) that makes me want to avoid him - even if there's no rational point for doing so in the game.
Then again, it shouldn't be a hidden rating either - I'm sure real GMs & coaches can spot it when they see it, and I'm sure it matters to at least some of them.
I'm more comfortable with something like a, er, Solecismic/Wonderlic score as a proxy for intelligence, at least in football. There's something less definitive about seeing a guy with a score of 8 (out of 50) than an intelligence score of 2 (out of 100).
Any other thoughts on this matter?

I've never personally liked the idea of giving 0-100 scores for something like Intelligence, or any mental attributes. With Physical and Technical attributes, I'm ok with, since you can drill these repeatedly in many different ways. They are pretty concrete things (individually).
With things like "Aggression" or "Intensity" or "Work Ethic", these things are impossible to quantify in the real world. People can give them a number score based on the past or their own personal opinion, but it would be mostly subjective/ambiguous.
Ok, you can give Intelligence tests, rely on GPA, SATs, etc. But how do those things directly translate to "football intelligence" or "hockey intelligence"?
So basically, yeah, I agree. When it comes to mental attributes, I would much rather be given their test scores rather than a "hard" 1-100 rating, and/or subjective attribute values (word descriptions, etc.)

I'm not particularly bothered by measuring the intelligence or lack thereof of numerical representations of fake players...

I have no idea how it is modeled in the game, but I have coached players who would score very low on the general "intelligence" scale.
for example - we have an unbelievably talented (6'1" 220, 4.5 speed as a Junior) football player on the high school team I coach. He should be a 2-way all-state type player but currently only plays offense because after about 6 months of trying to teach him defense he simply didn't "get it" (his words)
on offense - he is fantastically talented, but we find ourselves very restricted in what we can and can not call when he is in the game, because he only knows a very small portion of the offense.
Our defensive coordinator tried everything to teach this kid (because if he ever got it our defense would improved tremendously. So last year in a summer practice he asked him "how do you learn, or is it easiest for you to learn - buy seeing something, hearing, reading?" he spent about 10-15 minutes making suggestions of different ways to learn. Finally he says to the kid "how do you best learn in class?" (all students must have a 2.0 to be eligible to play and he is right at the threshold.) His answer and again this is a direct quote "I don't even **** know - I have cheated in every class I have taken in my entire life!"
sad situation - talented kid, a good kid (he doesn't cause problems, deal drugs, get arrested) but a home environment that clearly did not help him grow intellectually - we as coaches try to help him, but he is pretty resistive to the help and like many of the kids we see is convinced he will make his millions as an NFL star or a RAP star.
