With face repaired, man wants to find wife
By Liu Li (China Daily)
Updated: 2006-04-06 06:04

Yang Huimin, a 28-year-old man from Central China's Henan Province, had what he thought was a pimple on face when he was 4.

But during the next 24 years, the small swelling grew bigger and bigger, eventually covering the entire left side of his face.

A 19-hour operation on Yang's abnormal skull ended successfully yesterday at the Beijing-based No 304 Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, chief surgeon Li Anmin told China Daily yesterday.

Yang was in stable condition, Li said, and his intelligence will not be affected, but he was unable to talk and eat yesterday because of an incision into his trachea. Li said, though, that he should recover both his voice and his appetite by Saturday.

"Although Yang's head still looks a little different from normal ones, his skull was repaired to normal after a proliferation weighing 1 kilogramme was removed," Li said.

This is only the first step to help the young man with a face similar to a lion, hospital sources said.

Yang will undergo a procedure to bring his face to a uniform colour. Previously the abnormality on face was red.

The second operation will be scheduled as Yang's physical condition warrants, the hospital sources said.

Three groups of physicians and nurses in cranial nerve and plastic surgery participated.

Besides the bone, fat weighing nearly 2 kilograms was also cut from Yang's head.

Yang, who went to Beijing from Henan in February for treatment, said his biggest wish after the operations is to find a wife. He had seldom stepped outside his home during the past 20 years.

Yang's parents and sister accompanied him to Beijing.

The nearly 200,000 yuan (US$25,000) required for the operations has been raised from donations, hospital sources said.

I really don't mean this in a bad way, but here he looks exactly like Bert from Sesame Street.

His condition reminds me of another thing like this I saw on TV (I believe it was on Discovery) where a young boy had a tumor that grew in his face, eventually creating an ungodly deformation similar to the guy above..

But why did it take so long to do something about this? I mean, if after a year, that "pimple" was still growing, wouldn't that raise a few red flags?

I don't think he looks at all like a lion.

There's one channel - and it may be Discovery Health - that they should just rename "The Disfigurement and Abnormal Growth Channel." I swear, every time I surf the listings, there are shows like, "Born With 4 Stomachs" or "Man Without a Forehead" or "Medically Insane Shit You Have To See to Believe, and Then You'll Wish You Never Saw."

I've always wondered about that too when I hear about cases like this. I hate going to the doctor, but if something starts growing abnormally on my body I'll make an exception.

Luckily he went to Beijing-based No 304 Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army instead of Beijing-based No 303 Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. 303 is a shithole...

I'm wondering that, too. I mean, he doesn't look like a lion in that pic, so I'm wondering if this is an improvement.

It would be funny on about a hundred different levels if he would cover that bald spot with a comb over.

This guy bought into those Fat Head ads in a literal way.

Ok, ok.. I'm sorry.

And for the Discovery Health channel? No shit. I can't stand those shows, but I always watch them til I am sick. It baffles the hell out of me.

Did anyone else see the one where the woman had a 150 pound tumor on her back that they had to remove? I wanted to vomit the whole time, but it was fascinating.

Was that the one with the teeth and hair growing in it?

There was one where that happened too, but I thought the tumor was 300-plus pounds.. could be a whole other case.

Tumors are nuts, man.

What kind of clues could they hold in mans quest to indict cancer and put it away for good?

And where are the trendiest places to get your stomach stapled? You'll be shocked when you hear which hollywood starlet recently underwent this fashionable new surgery on the next 'Show You See On TV These Days'..

This was some russian/romanian chick(i think) and she weighed like 100 lbs before the tumor, but was over 250 after it. No teeth or anything, but she looked like a tortoise.

I saw the show about the one with the teeth.

Not good times. Bad times.
