So I've decided that I want to work at a day camp this summer. I am in my mid-20s and the sum total of my camp experience is a week a year I've done for the past 6 years as a bunk counselor for my youth group's camp retreat and being a CIT in 7th grade. However, I will have completed, when summer starts, my third year of teaching and have been working with kids in a recreational capacity, through work at a youth center, since I was 19.

So I've found a camp that seems like it might be a good fit (a puff piece done in the local paper stated that they have several teachers on staff). On the application it asks what position I'm applying for. Now I don't have an interest in being a co-counselor with some 16 y/o, but don't really know what kind of positions there are that I might be qualified to do. My objective is to more work with kids at a camp this summer than anything else. Any suggestions?

Alot of time they will have classes or programs within the camp that certified teachers are needed to fill. You can always contact the camp directly and ask them what kind of positions they have. Since Im a college student I was a tutor/mentor (Student counselor) at Upward Bound this summer.

Gr...I wrote a reply and somehow it didn't post.

Ok. I'll try again.

I've got a lot more experience as a residential camp counselor than at day camp. But...you should still see if they have a web site or some example of the activities they offer there.

Most places have activities for each counselor to teach or whatever and maybe to do other things working with the kids through the day. And so perhaps they want to know what activities you can teach, etc. You might do that with another counselor, but it's not that bad.

Each camp has its own schedule quirks, so I'd just get the scoop on that before I'd apply, just so you know what you're getting into. Because really..I've learned that over the years, not all camps are created equal.

That said, it's generally a ton of fun and a good way to spend a summer.
