Thought I'd start a separate thread to avoid a threadjack on the MLB 2K7 thread. Here's a developer interview with a couple of screenshots in the article. More info and screenshots should be coming soon with the release getting closer.

FYI.....for those overseas, The Show is a region free game.

Definitely a game I'm eagerly anticipating. Played the previous edition at a buddies place on the PS2 and nearly bought a PS2 for that game alone.

As i said in the other thread I'll probably sell my Xbox360 to buy a Ps3 just to be able to play all the great USA sports games like "MLB 07 the show" "College Hoops" and "NCAA Football" as all them are region locked for the 360 while they are region free for the PS3. It's a same as i really like the 360, but I can't avoid to be so jaleous of you guys playing those great games.

Factsheet for those that might have missed it:
As you may have heard, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) officially announced this week that MLB 07 The Show™ will be available in Spring 2007, on the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™).
Already widely considered the most authentic baseball simulation available, the franchise now introduces the all-new Road to The Show mode, enabling gamers to play both offense and defense from the created player’s perspective. Providing an even more realistic experience from the mound, the all-new New Pitch Command System (PCS) delivers unsurpassed strategy to pitch selection, as a pitcher’s “pitch comfort” will be predetermined based on a best to worst pitch scenario. It is up the gamer to decide if he/she should try to “work on a pitch” or just go with what is working. Additionally, with the Adaptive Pitching Intelligence (API) feature, catchers will call the game based on the individual strengths and weaknesses of each pitcher as well as analyze tendencies of batters. Gamers will now have the ability to either trust the pitches called by the catcher or shake them off.
As more and more gamers are seeking quality online competition and content, MLB 07 The Show adds to its already robust online feature set and delivers Online League Play, which offers the ability to set up customizable leagues with up to 30 teams, complete with full stat tracking, point benefits and rewards. Additionally, the My Sliders feature allows users to create their perfect game settings and upload them to the MLB 07 The Show server for others to try out.
Due to hit stores this spring as the only officially licensed first party videogame exclusively for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system, PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system and the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, MLB 07 The Show is set to deliver an unrivaled experience for baseball fans.
Road to The Show – Along with Classic Career Mode, MLB 07 The Show introduces an innovative new option. Road to The Show enables gamers to play offense and defense from the created player’s perspective for they plays in which they are involved. The game will automatically fast forward to the next user-integrated sequence with some events occasionally triggering situational goals form coaches or managers.
Always Online – With the PS3, players will have the option to be “Always Online” allowing elements such as MLB Score Ticker, Instant Messaging, Buddy Invites and more to occur at any point. Gamers could be playing an exhibition game and receive an message from a buddy to get into a different game room and go head-to-head. No scoring update in the MLB will be missed, as the MLB.com powered ticker can be seen during any off or online game.
Online League Play – MLB 07 The Show provides today’s sports fanatics with the ability to set up leagues with anywhere from 6-30 teams with full stat tracking, point benefits and rewards. Gamers can customize the league including choosing players, teams, length of schedule and much more. (Note: There are no cross platform leagues available.)
Online News Service / MLB.com Headline News – Sports fanatics can receive all the current happenings in sports today. Information will be updated a few times each hour with news, trades and events from 31 different feeds, each containing 25 unique items. Users can select general MLB® headlines or updates from all 30 teams instantly. New for 07, MLB 07 The Show offers an enhanced Live MLB Ticker, which shows live status of all MLB games going on around the league – with updates several times a minute. This new view will be complete with who is on base, pitching, batting, on-deck and full inning-by-inning box scores.
Rivalry Mode – For those with a competitive nature, Rivalry Mode allows baseball fans to set up and maintain multi-game rivalries between multiple gamers or versus the Artificial Intelligence (AI), and keeps track of the stats throughout the rivalry.
Franchise Mode – Extending the experience of running a team, performance and player morale are tracked on virtually every level – salary, playing time, batting slot, team performance, and much more.
Career Mode – The Career Spotlight underscores all of the accomplishments and failures during a career and showcases them in the limelight. Gamers still need to call the shots, but now the ramifications of actions are documented.
Season Mode – Grind out the162 game season and deal with day-to-day match-ups, refining the lineup and play for the championship just like the pros.
All-Star Game – Lets gamers take the virtual road trip to San Francisco early to see who prevails for home field advantage in the 2007 Fall Classic.
Adaptive Pitching Intelligence (API) – Catchers will call the game based on individual strengths and weaknesses of each pitcher and analyze tendencies of batters. Gamers will have the ability to trust the pitches called by the catcher or shake them off. (The catcher’s recommendations are based off of thousands of actual MLB® stats.)
Pitch Command System (PCS) – Delivering unsurpassed authenticity and strategy to pitch selection, a pitcher’s “pitch comfort” will be predetermined based on a best to worst pitch scenario. It’s up the gamer to decide if they should try to “work on a pitch” or just go with what’s working. The more a player works on a pitch, the better it becomes, and the more a gamer neglects a pitch, the harder it becomes to work the zone.
KEY FEATURES
PlayMaker Fielding – The fielding interface brings the player attributes together with the user’s skill level. With the Fielding Zone Marker, the fielder’s fielding attribute rating will determine the size of the zone that surrounds the ball and its eventual landing location. With highly ranked fielders, the ball marker will be displayed sooner and smaller, making it easier to judge fly balls.
Multi-Branch Fielding – Branch Point Technology goes to a new level as gamers you can now take full control of fielders and break out of any animation in the process. Change a fielding decision and branch out of any animation after the first branch point. With Branch Point Technology, MLB 07 The Show provides unbelievably smooth, fluid transitions for seamless double plays and relays.
Release Point Pitching – Taking video game pitching to a whole new level, gamers must utilize a timing mechanism to learn and realize each pitchers pace and release point, which varies from pitcher to pitcher.
Pitching Confidence Meter – The ultimate pitcher/batter interface returns. Additionally, Pitcher Confidence plays a role in a gamer’s ability to hit release points in the all-new pitch meter, while frequency of mistakes will impact the confidence level of a gamer’s hurler, making it more difficult to paint the corners of the strike zone.
Guess Pitch – Baseball fans can attempt to master the ability to knock one out or hit the grounder to advance the runner by checking the pitch history and correctly guessing which pitch and the location that the pitcher will throw next. If the correct pitch is selected, the power attribute is increased in attempts to leave the yard in a hurry.
Pitch Grips – Gamers will be able to detail the different pitch grips and arm angles that a pitcher has when throwing each pitch. Showing these details in Replay Mode shows what to look for in release point and pitch arm angle from 15 different pitches.
40-Man Roster – Provides the ability to take full control of a team’s roster and manage all 40 players for each and every game.
My Sliders (Up/Downloadable) – The My Sliders option gives users the ability to create their perfect game settings offline by adjusting game sliders. Gamers can then save these adjustments to memory and, when online, upload to them to the MLB 07 The Show server for other users to try and let the online community be the judge on finding the perfect game.
MLB® Player Motion Captures – MLB 07 The Show features dozens of professional athletes including David Wright, David Ortiz, Eric Chavez, Roger Clemens, Shawn Green, Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman, Tim Hudson, Darryl Hamilton, Troy Percival, Brett Tomko, Mo Vaughn and more.
Thousands of Personalized Animations – Authenticity: featuring personalized player animations for everything from walk-ups, rituals, stances and swings and even emotions.
New Umpire Personalities – Providing even more realism to the diamond, MLB 07 The Show features umpires with unique tendencies and animations. Each umpire will have his own definition of the strike zone, and it’s up to the gamer to figure out if the umpire is calling the zone high, low, or giving the corners.
Managers / Coaches – MLB® managers and coaches will be on the field calling the shots.
KEY FEATURES
MLB Authenticity, Subtleties & Nuances – MLB 07 The Show features drag bunts, wild pitches, broken bats, check swings, off-line throws and much more.
Crowd Interaction – Gamers will see a vast array of new ambient elements including: fans coming, going and reaching for foul balls, vendors, 7th inning stretch, the wave, standing ovations and much, much more. These new subtleties make MLB 07 The Show truly feel like a day at the ballpark.
Wind Effects – MLB 07 The Show features a wind display showing wind speed and direction. Depending upon the severity of the wind, the ball will drift according to the speed and direction. Wind effects will force the player to take the proper route to the ball and make adjustments on the fly.
3-Man Booth & Progressive Commentary – Rex Hudler, Matt Vasgersian and Dave Campbell provide the most comprehensive commentary heard in any baseball videogame. MLB 07 The Show sets the bar high with the Progressive Commentary that changes as the user progresses throughout the game by adapting to current actions and situations.

This is the one thing I've missed when reading about the PS3.. are you saying all games will be region-free? I've been dead-set against the PS3 after reading all the negative press, but for a Euro like me this might actually sway my interest quite a bit!
Just a footnote about the link to buying the game though..

The PS3 is supossed to be region free (like the PSP) but as it has not been released here yet, i can't know for sure.
About play-asia not shipping it to Euro... I guess it's written there just to cover them legaly (notice the price is in Euros too), they are shipping JAP and USA games to every country. I know a few guys buying there the Xbox360 games that are region free (some are) as the Japanesse releases prices are like 40% cheaper than in Europe. Even if they dont' ship to Europe the PS3 games for any reason, I'm sure there will be other ways/places to buy them (like a fellow FOFCer who can buy and ship it to us ;) )

Yes, games for the PS3 are region free. I wouldn't worry about the link specifically, because it's a site that is for Asian countries to get the American titles. There will be European sites that will carry Asian and American titles. Also, PlayAsia will be allowed to ship to Europe once the PS3 is released there. Sony just doesn't want European players to get PS3's and games early from other areas that don't have the system yet. Once that stuff is for sale in Europe, you can buy from anywhere you want.
I've got a PS3 and to be honest, most of the negative press is pretty overblown. It's more PR screw ups by Sony than anything actually wrong with the system. It's a great system that has had an extremely low failure rate and I have already purchased a couple of Asian titles as well because of the lack of region restrictions. I've also purchased 'Cash, Guns, Chaos', 'Blast Factor' and 'Lemmings' and have enjoyed all three games as well. I personally would not buy retro games as a download, but the new games in HD for $10 and under are well worth a try in my opinion. Worst-case scenario is that you're only out $10, though they do have demos to try them out ahead of time.
European players are going to get the best of things as the system will arrive in Europe when large numbers of games start arriving on the PS3 in March and April. I've finished Resistance (great game) and Need for Speed and I'm currently playing a lot of NBA 2K7. All are a lot of fun and it's going to get a lot better when games like The Show arrive in the next couple of months.

Me too, will end getting this one for the PS2 and later will decide if i end selling my 360 for a ps3 if it is really region free and i can import the games. I hated missing college hoops 07 in the 360 as i'm enjoying NBA2k7 a lot.

The ps2 demo has hit Gamestop and EB Games, going to see if I can snag a copy today. The impressions over at OS are nothing but great so far.
If MLB 2k7 360 is not very good, my daughter's ps2 will get a workout this year. :)
35 Screenshots from the Ps2 version, I'm really impressed at them knowing that are from the Ps2 and not from next gen.

Were the load times on the PSP version any better than the PS2 version? The "road to the show" mode was fantastically cool, but the load times stopped me from playing it for very long. 30 seconds plus in between appearances? No thanks.

Load times in the PSP are better than past year, also the wait is less boring now as the loading screen changes on every load to the starting pitchers, or league standings, or your own stats, etc so you have something to read in between.

I have not spent alot of time looking at next-gen or PS3 screenshots but these have alot of jaggies... That said if this game plays as well as last years PS2 version and has decent next-gen graphics it will be a good game... Kind of how I feel about Winning Eleven 2007 for my 360 (which plays a great game of footie - but I really miss the edit features of the PS2 version)

In honor of Missouri sucking big time last night to Baylor, I started a ps3 kittie with the money I made from selling a pc - it now sits at $300. IF MLB The Show is as good as the ps2 version but with a FIXED franchise mode, I MIGHT save until I get $500 for the 20gb version. If it's not very good, I'll put the money in the bank.
I'll wait also for reviews, even more knowing that the price of the Ps3 here will be around $800 (the 60gb one, there won't be the 20 one in Europe) plus I'll need also an HD TV as the Ps3 can't be played in a TFT computer monitor as the 360 can.

I wouldn't get the PS3 unless you can get the 60GB version. To many things locked out of the cheaper unit that can't even be upgraded.
It'll suck reading great reviews of The Show on the PS3 if they hit it out of the park. On the other hand, there are a lot of other great games either already out or soon to be out that'll eat up my time anyway.

No built in WiFi on the 20GB model for one. Less cache on the 20GB model. Slower load times, things like that.
I think there are a few other differences as well, but those are the biggies I think, but there are comparisons that show all of them.

Wifi does nothing for me and as long as it doesn't hinder game framerate, I think the 20GB model is all I would need.
I'll check out the differences, thanks!

The only other differences is the 20 GB model does not have ports for compaq flash/sd/ or does not come with a memory card. It also does not have an HDMI port.
None of this stuff matters to me. I would get component cables and hook that up into an XVGA box and then to my pc monitor.
The Show is REALLY going to have to be stellar though or I'll stick to PC gaming and maybe get a psp for my console baseball gaming fix.

No I haven't as the Xbox 360 has a VGA cable you can buy. BUT they do claim it works, so worst case you send it back for a refund.

I doubt I will buy a ps3 for one game, but knowing my life of console gaming, IGN and Gamespot will give it a 9.5 or something. :)

I have the 20GB model and it does have an HDMI port (using it now in fact). The only difference between the 20 and 60 GB model is the 40 GB HD, lack of WiFi and memory card reader. Everything else is identical. The WiFi wasn't a big deal to me since I had my wireless adapter from my PS2.

Lot's of mixed reviews of the videos at operationsports. I don't think the player models are as good as MLB 07 (though I only played the demo on a 360) but the fact that it doesn't have the blurred background (something that really takes away from the game IMHO) makes it better.
Up to date rosters (according to what I've read), problems from the ps2 version fixed, and The Shows great presentation and gameplay makes this an almost certain purchase for me. One nice thing is the game should sell quite well so I think I'll at least wait a few days to a week to see what people post as they play the game.

I'm not impressed by the player models, but I love this game in the PSP so if the bugs from the PS2 are fixed and the gameplay is the same, this could make me to finally decide to buy a PS3 as next gen console. I'll wait for reviews to make sure that there isn't any big bug.

Anyone have the PSP Version? I bought it last month, and I'm having fun playing as myself. I was with the Dodgers farm team, and they traded me to Detroit and was brought up at the end of the season (but never got to play). I signed a contract with St. Louis the next season, and I was sent to play on the farm. After about 1-2 months I'm now a reserve on the big league club.
Pretty fun game to waste time.

I've got it for the PSP. It's been fun, but I haven't had much free time lately to spend on it. I began with the Nationals farm team, and got a late season call up and started about 5 or 6 games for them at the end of the season. My ERA was under 3 but I couldn't get much run support and ended up winning only 1 game and getting a couple losses. Signed a 2 year contract with the Nationals in the offseason and began the next season with the farm team, but haven't played any games yet for the second season. I'm hoping to get more time over the weekend and making it back to the big leagues.

I'm playing the heck out of it on the psp, finally was able to start my season as the rosters were released on Monday that have Dice-K, Sammy, and the likes.
I do wish there was a level between veteran and all star. I hit too well on veteran and don't hit enough dingers on all star, plus my pitching is torn up on all star.
I know.. sliders... I really hate messing with them. :)
The ps3, if I ever purchase one, is a LONG way off, but I'm anxious to read some reviews and impressions on The Show.

The game finally comes out tomorrow. Really excited to get this one. Glad to see that they didn't rush this game out just to make sure it hit the market by the start of the season (it would seem they did that with the PS2 version). Should be interesting to see some of the reviews/opinions as well.
So excited too, i ended buying a PS3 2 weeks ago because the region free games. Already got NBA2k7 and NHL2k7, waiting for MLB07 and College Hoops 2k7 that will be shipped to me from Canada tomorrow, can't wait!

I have the NBA game as well. It's a lot of fun. How do you like the NHL game? I noticed that it's now only $30, so it may be a good value game at this point.

I've been playing RTTS on the psp as a starting pitcher and I'm finally past my issues with the game. Stats are right on and such in this mode and all I have to do is pitch every 5th day. It was great being able to pitch in the spring and assist Pujols on a play. :) As it should be, I got shelled early and often and getting an out was a victory. I pitch one more game in the grapefruit league and then I'm sure it's AA for me.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to this mode. Hopefully it's done well. I like the idea of being involved in the game without having to play every single pitch of every single game.

Exactly. It allows you to progress many seasons as well.
The rosters have Carp and Mulder in AAA, but not on the DL, so hopefully once the season starts, it moves them into the majors as I've read there are issues on the ps2 version where major leaguers stay in AAA after injuries. This would kill the game for me.

I just hope the sims are accurate enough so that the Cards are just as bad as the Royals, just like in real life. :p :p :p :p

I have not played NHL2k7 a lot as i'm playing mainly NBA2k7 while i wait for the game i have been dying to play, College Hoops 07 that i couldn'y before in the 360. I enjoyed a lot NBA2k7 in the xbox360 and wanted to keep playing it in the ps3. I'm also playing F1:CE when i want to race :)
I bought NBA2k7 and NHL2k7 in a pack of both for $60 shipping included from play.com

You know it's funny. Before the season started, you would be saying, "Damn this game isn't realistic at all." :D
That's the one thing games can't do or people would be questioning the sim engine. Well, I take that back - I think some text sims do have variable stats from even the best of rated players.

This game just has to be good. My PS3 has only been used to play Planet Earth Blu Ray episodes over the last few weeks. Looking at the release schedule, I don't see any "must have" title coming out for quite a while on it. Please, oh, please be good.

I read an IGN review before I left for work this morning. It wasn't really good. Basicly said it was just a port of the PS2 version and some of the things didn't work as well on the PS3. (including RTTS) The final score was 7.7
In IGN terms, that's about a 5.
Now, a lot of sports reviewrs miss how good a great sports game can be because they don't understand the nuances of the game like a die hard sports fan. I'm at work and blocked from gaming websites, so I can't post the text.
I didn't see Gamespot with a review when I left this morning. I'm still getting it today and am going to pray I have a game on this system that means something. (besides Resistence)

I tried the PS2 version at Walmart. Since I'm not a big baseball fan, my main goal was to start a fight, so I kept nailing hitters with pitches. The batters would get mad, but there was never a fight. How disappointing.

MLB '07: The Show Review
Does the PS3 edition hit one out of the park?
by Jeff Haynes
May 14, 2007 - Expected results have a funny way of continually surprising everyone. Take the start of this year's baseball season, for instance. In February, Yankees fans were still prepared to boo A-Rod anywhere he went, the Daisuke Matsuzaka mania gripping Boston had reached religious heights, and gamers were eagerly awaiting Sony's follow up to last year's excellent baseball title, MLB 07: The Show. However, instead of trying to sweep the market with the versions of the game for all three systems, Sony sent the PS3 version of the game back down to the minors for some extra development time. Well, as the season has shown, A-Rod turned boos to cheers with his home run streak and Dice-K became a mortal pitcher after all. But did the release of MLB 07: The Show for the PS3 45 days after Opening Day equal or surpass the hype that the series as generated over the past two years?
Not really.
Don't get me wrong -- MLB 07 for the PS3 tries to carry over everything from the PS2 version of the game, such as the Pitch Command System, Road to the Show and umpire personalities. It also tries to add to the mix with some brand new animations, better textures for stadium and some new Sixaxis controls. However, there's a few significant problems that wind up arising with the title that keep it from being great: some gameplay mechanics that were better in the PS2 version of the game didn't make it over to the PS3, while others don't work as well as you'd expect them to. Plus, for a first party baseball title that's coming out as late as MLB 07 is this year, you'd expect, perhaps even demand something that stretched the capabilities of the system. As it currently stands, The Show feels like a ported PS2 game - a good PS2 game, but one nonetheless.
Pitching and batting are still central to MLB 07.MLB 07 still places a large emphasis on the pitcher this year, thanks to the inclusion of the Pitch Command System and the Adaptive Pitching Intelligence. Players will still be able to use the catcher's calls as well as the confidence their hurler feels in a particular pitch to improve their success on the mound. However, they'll need to take into account the Umpire Personalities, which will call the strike zone tighter, looser or right down the middle. For the most part, this hasn't really changed in the PS3 version, with only a few exceptions: thanks to the lack of vibration in Sixaxis controllers, pitchers will have to fight through a much faster pitching meter whenever they're rattled or feeling the pressure in a game situation. While you'll still have to discern what kind of ump you happen to have in front of you, it seems a bit easier to find out, especially if you paint the black a few times. It feels like these umps are a bit more willing to give up their personality tells earlier in the PS3 version.
Batting is still solid, thanks to the included Swing Analysis tool that gives you an indication as to the timing and location of your swing as well as the location of the ball. On the other hand, queuing up bases with the new baserunning targeting system can still be a bit sticky. Fortunately, the new meter that was implemented for fielding to determine the strength of a throw has been tightened up significantly. Now you have a better sense of how much mustard you're putting on a throw if you hold down the button to the baseman or cutoff man you're targeting.
Get ready to dive thanks to the Sixaxis controls. This isn't the only fielding change made in the PS3 version; thanks to the Sixaxis controller, players have a new way of performing plays that could be Web Gems. By snapping the controller up, you can make a fielder jump, while snapping downwards or moving the controller horizontally left or right can make them dive in those directions. For the most part, the motion sensitivity for fielding works really well - better than it does in some other PS3 sports titles. The only danger that you may run into is that trying to get an infielder to dive for a ball that squirts through the gap can sometimes cause your outfielders to unintentionally dive as well, putting them out of position to make a play on the ball.
Players can also use the Sixaxis controller while they're on offense to influence your slides. By tilting the controller to the left or the right, you can determine just how much of a slide to the inside or outside of the bag your runner will make. Unfortunately, this mechanic doesn't work as well as fielding, as it can be extremely hard to tell just how much you need to tilt to successfully pull off these moves. Since the game won't actually give you a hint on how to best pull this off (as opposed to fielding, which it will tell you about), you're better off sticking to the analog sticks.
Although most of the gameplay of MLB 07 managed to survive the transition from PS2 to PS3, one facet of play isn't as solid as it was on the older system: computerized infield logic suffers from a number of AI flaws that just weren't in the PS2 version. In a number of games we played, we noticed instead of tagging a base during a force play, (especially if the runner hasn't gotten past the baseman) the infielder will more often than not opt to throw to the first baseman, which doesn't make sense. For instance, with one out and runners on first and second, a grounder is sent to the third baseman that's half a foot away from the bag. Instead of trying to turn the 5-4-3 double play or even stepping on third before throwing to another base, the fielder tosses the ball to first, making the inning drag on longer than usual. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever, but for some reason, the AI will pull bush league plays like this, which will make you scream.
Sure, that's infuriating, but what about the other big draw to this year's game on the PS2, the Road to the Show mode? One thing that is nice is that players will now have a large number of nicknames or actual last names that you can assign to your created player. With 273 pages of voiced names, you should be able to find something to call your rookie player. However, what you'll find once you've entered the mode is a somewhat different system than on the PS2. For one thing, you will rarely ever receive a "not attempted" classification for a goal, even if the circumstances are out of your player's control. If, for instance, you're supposed to perform a sacrifice bunt and the runner gets picked off a base, it shouldn't count as a failed goal. For some reason, now it does. This harder edged "pass/fail" criteria makes playing this mode much stricter than ever before. When you couple this with the fact that it will constantly demand hard to almost impossible goals over and over again, the mode has a large amount of fun sucked out of it. Could be just me, but having my skipper tell me I have to go yard five times in a row or get a triple ten times in a row is just insane. When you couple this with the fact that the camera angles haven't improved from PS2 to PS3, and you still can't make defensive adjustments, Road to the Show starts to lose a bit of its strength as a selling point for the game.
Online is still good, but the Road to the Show isn't as solid as the PS2 version. At least the online component of the game has carried over faithfully. MLB 07 will allow players to chat, IM, send mail and even create posts that PS2 and PSP owners can interact with. In effect, this gives a much larger sense of a baseball community with the online features present in the PS3 version of the game, as it unifies all three systems on the Sportscast network that Sony has created for the title. Along with the standard features of continually having a sports ticker with game information streamed to your system in real time, players can get hourly news updates on teams. Similarly, the leagues and online player card info is still as solid as the other versions of the title.
Technically, however, MLB 07 is one of those games that teases you with what should be an excellent experience, but falls short overall. The framerate of the game is extremely solid, and runs without any slowdown during in-game cutscenes or transitions between innings. Similarly, the title has received more than 3500 new animations, so crow hops, slides, tumbling catches and other plays feel a lot more natural. Watching players kick up dirt particles and dust as they stepped up to the plate or tried to gain extra bases was quite nice. What's more, many of the in-game cutscenes are pretty impressive to check out. I was stunned to see an umpire take a player's bat and check it before returning it to him, just as I was pleased to see players talking to each other on base, as well as one of the best crowds in sports games. I was also pleased to see that during exhibition, franchise or season games, the camera tracked the ball a lot faster when it was put into play.
While cutscenes are impressive, some of the visual issues and textures don't do the game justice. On the other hand, this isn't what you'd expect a next-gen sports title to look like. Many of the faces look extremely generic, and while the camera will sometimes zoom in on them to show off the excitement or anger that washes over a player during a particular moment, you're probably not going think that athlete looks like their real life counterpart much. The same can be said about the character models, which are restricted to three body types and somewhat limited cloth physics. Considering that MLB's competition made their athlete's look much more realistic, you realize that the Show has a lot of catching up to do for next year's PS3 title. What's more, visual issues extend to your created players as well. For some reason, your created player's profile image with his stats won't ever match the athlete you put together, which is simply lazy. Outside of this, you'll find a number of glitches as hats and bats flicker into place, collision detection issues, like players trying to celebrate and missing each other's hands, and other random visual hiccups. However, some of the worst items are some of the background textures. While stadiums have received new textures, the background environments haven't, so generic areas like Baseball City in Florida during Spring Training games or minor league parks in particular look horrendous. Water textures outside of parks look really poor. Combined with load times that can last up to 30 seconds or more for any single game or Road to the Show situation, and you'll wonder if this game is really utilizing the PS3.
At least the sound is still top notch. The three man crew of Vasgersian, Hudler and Campbell are still solid, and the timing of what they're saying appears to be a bit sharper in the PS3 version than the other editions of The Show. The soundtrack is still the same, but the true standout within the sound department is the ambient experience. The large amount of crowd commentary and razzing from fans is an excellent touch for the game, and really gives you a sense of being at the park. Even cooler are the radio play by play calls from various games from around the league last year, with various announcers literally screaming about game winning home runs or incredible double plays. Those pieces of audio literally get your adrenaline pumping as your navigating menus or waiting for a game to load.
Closing Comments
The Show manages to bring up the overall shell of Sony’s baseball game from the PS2 minors, but as a next gen title, it doesn’t have all of the fundamentals to compete with other sports games out there. Funky infielder logic, lackluster visuals and other odd changes to the gameplay formula literally turns a great baseball title on older systems into a good title on the PS3. That isn’t to say that baseball fans shouldn’t take a look at The Show; just don’t expect it to be leaps and bounds that the other sports titles around.

8.5 Presentation
The radio calls add a huge amount of presentation to the overall MLB 07 atmosphere. The visuals from The Show compliment this nicely as well.
7.5 Graphics

7.5 Gameplay
Infielding AI issues and Road to the Show changes pull a large amount of fun out of this year’s debut on the PS3.

Icy,
Those MLB2K7 reviews are WHY we should all be concerned about the MLB: The Show review.
7.9 and 7.4 are what they give out to buggy pieces of crap. Again, a 7.7 score essentially means the game is crap by the standard IGN scale.
Now, could they have missed a lot of the subtelties that The Show will most certainly contain? Sure. They could also just hate baseball and rip all baseball games.
I hope they are wrong. I'll be buying the game today regardless, but that review is not a good sign.

- The Ps2 version would be perfect without the two franchise bugs it has:
1- No CPU initiated trades
2- Coaches dissapear from teams as soon as you play a game, you can sign them again, and as soon as you play a game they disapear again from your team. It doesn't happen when you sim games.
- The PSP version is perfect, the bugs in the PS2 are not here.
My hope is that the PS3 version plays like the PSP/PS2 one and has no bugs.

Kind of a mixed bag in that review. Only glaring problem would be the infielder AI. I'm interested to see if Sony addresses that in a patch. My main concern with that would be that they already took time to clean up some of the details in the game by moving back the release date. It's a bit disappointing to see that they still have an AI problem even though they had extra time to get it right. I'm less concerned about the graphic issues outside the ballpark as it doesn't affect gameplay too much.
I will say that if it's a fancy port of the PS2 as he says, I'm totally good with that. There was no mention of the major PS2 bugs, so it could be a very good game.

Disclaimer: I have NO information on this. I'm just guessing.
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if EA stops making the college baseball game altogether. They did a great job with the MVP 06 college game, but then they decided to make the MVP 07 game PS2-only. To me, that was a bad sign. On top of that, from what I read, they didn't even bother updating the rosters for this year's game. I'm pretty sure I read it here on FOFC. What they apparently did was, for instance, take the top-ranked team's roster from MVP 06 and move it to the top-ranked team on MVP 07, and they did this for every team.
It just seemed to me that EA put absolutely no effort into the college baseball game this year. Yeah, I know people say that about Madden, but at least they change or add something in Madden each year, even if it doesn't turn out well.
I hope I'm wrong about the college baseball game. Hopefully, EA will continue to develop the game and improve upon it. I would also want to see a 360 version, as I loathe the PS2 controller. Given what EA did with MVP NCAA Baseball and Arena Football this year, though, I wouldn't be shocked to see both of those games disappear.

Sounds pretty promising there. He hasn't seen the AI blunders that the IGN guy said happened quite a bit. Said the game feels more like High Heat, so players who don't like a sim may be a bit put off. That's part of the reason I didn't like the 2K7 game (bit too 'arcade-like'), so that's something I like to hear.

It's funny how people always claim, "X baseball game reminds me of High Heat".
Who cares? The last High Heat was like 4 years ago.
High Heat was great in its time, but I NEVER played the game with a joystick, it was all manage mode for me.

I find it funny for a different reason. High Heat was always an incredibly flawed game out of the box. The thing that seperated it wasn't a slider base, but a tune file that could tweak the game to incredible levels. I loved HH. I played it with a joystick and in manage only modes and it's one of my favorite games of all time. If MLB captures "out of the box" what HH did with people spending hours and hours honing a perfect tune file, I'm beyond thrilled.
I don't think that's gonna happen though. There are going to be things I don't like about the game and I'm not going to be able to do anything about it. My hope is that it's just a quality, fun game. They give me that, I'm happy.

High Heat was a good game from more than a management mode. It played really well with a joystick. I certainly understand that you played in the manager mode. Given that this is a FOF forum, it's likely that the majority of gamers here generally prefer playing in manager mode on most games.
I did notice in the Operation Sports thread that the IGN reviewer for the game had previously given NBA 07 for the PS3 a 7.0 rating. That hurts the reviewer's credibility a bit as that game was absolutely TERRIBLE.

The AI and the graphics were very tight at the time and the game could be tweaked to play very realistically no matter what your skill level was. Not like most games today where even the sliders can't be used to make a realistic game. High Heat was the only series where I actually played out every game of multiple 162-game seasons.

And yet again, this is where you miss the point. IGN reviews terrible games and gives them scores of 7.8 all the time. The IGN scale is usually something like this:
10 - 8.5 = Great game. Everyone will enjoy. Some flaws, but great.
8.4 - 8.0 = Decent niche game, some flaws. Worth a rental.
7.9 - Below = The game sucks ass. Don't waste your time, it's an abomination against everything good in the world.
They will occasionally review a great game in that bad category. But it happens rarely. In almost all cases, a game under 8 gets that score because it sucks. Their ratings system is horrible.
Which means the guy who gave the MLB review thinks the game is garbage. That doesn't mean it is garbage. It means that's what he thought of it. If the game is really a quality title, it'll be one of the rare games they review as crap that makes something of itself.
The only saving grace, is the games they usually do this to are games they don't understand. That's our only hope boys. If they do understand baseball, I can almost promise you we'll all be shredding this game in a few days. I'm hoping against hope I'm wrong on this, but that review is a horrible sign for the game. Simply horrible.

LOL. Well, I'll certainly allow you to do your Chicken Little dance. They haven't had any issues with giving sub-par Madden games very good scores over the last few years, so I won't hold my breath. I'm assuming you haven't played NBA 07. If you had, you would have known that it would have been lucky to get a 4.0 from anyone capable of telling the difference between their head and their a$$.
Obviously, this doesn't make the game any better or worse. Just stating that most people would say that IGN is the last place they would go for a review of a game. As Bill Harris has said in the past, IGN is craptacular with a capital C-R-A-P when it comes to accurate reviews.

Even the single man review at OS is pretty good, though it often comes out a couple of days after the release due to the fact that they often play through the game a bit more than most reviewers. It results in a much more comprehensive review, albeit a bit later than most.

And you keep MISSING THE DAMN POINT. They are craptacular not because they shred great games, but because they continually give 7's and aboves to crappy games. If you read him, you'll see what he's talking about. Of course they reviewed garbage Madden games with great scores and of course they reviewed garbage games like NBA 07 with good scores. That's what they do. Repeatedly. Find me a game they review lower than 6 and I'll show you a game developed by people who had the intelligence level of a handball.
The great games? They give them 8.5 and above almost every time. There are very few exceptions to this rule.
I'm not being chicken little, I'm being realistic. It's a horrific sign when a game reviewer who gives a 7 to NBA 07 only gives a 7.7 to MLB: The Show. I'll say it one more time, just to make sure you get it. . . they suck because a vast majority of their reviews are SKEWED UPWARD.
If this is the one game this quarter that's actually better than the score reviewed, yippeeee. We are all freakin happy today or tomorrow. If this is their "typical" skewed upwards score, we are all pissed off badly tomorrow unless we drink large quantities of alcohol or pop some Sony fanboy pills.
Don't think for a second I'm going to rip this game if I love it so I can slam Sony.

Simmer down. There were multiple iterations of Madden that had better than 8.5 from IGN that had no business getting anything close to that. It's neither here nor there. Most don't think much of IGN's reviews, so we'll just leave it at that. As Icy said, OS should give some pretty good impressions of how good/bad the game is. My general thought is that it's likely to not be a barn-burner of a game, but will still be a solid game.

Everytime you write something, you continue to prove my point. They gave Madden above an 8.5. Is that a downwardly skewed score or an upwardly skewed score? Don't worry, I'm patient. I'll wait.
They just gave MLB a score lower than MLB2K7 for the 360, which was a horrific game. If they skewed this score upwards, we are screwed.
As for it not being a barn burner, but a solid game. . . that'd be pretty damned dissapointing to me, though if it were solid I'd continue playing it. The problem is this is one of Sony's in exclusive titles. It's not all that good if their exclusive turns out ot be an OK game. It should be a sensational game. I'm hoping it will be a sensational game.
This morning I was thinking it'd be somewhere in between solid and sensational. After the review? I'm thinking between average and solid and am hoping IGN finally skewed a review downward. It happens once a quarter, I'm sure the game I want to be great is the one they did it to. It always works out like that, right?

All the web reviews have been bad, but all the user impressions have been great.
The 1UP review is clearly someone focused on graphics and not gameplay. One of his complaints was because the game doesn't have a swing stick like MLB2K, and that button pressing doesn't feel next-gen enough. He also says that he can't influence where he wants to hit the ball, but obviously he doesn't know that you can use the right analog for that.
I'll ignore these web reviews and continue reading the 4 pages of user impressions over at OS until I can play the game tomorrow night after work.

Yeah, the other negative review that I noticed mentioned that there were too many hits up the middle (as you said, the right stick is used to control that). Also, another reviewer complained that there were no HR celebrations (if he would have looked, you can alter that in the settings menu).
You would think that they'd actually let these guys know that they're supposed to have some level of knowledge about how the game works before they dismiss a feature as not working. It's disappointing that many of these reviews are coming from players who aren't familiar with the game OR the manual. This just in........it may not be the game that is the problem.

The 1Up review was written by a graphics whore who knows nothing about baseball. When he calls MLB2K7 the king, he's got issues. Let's be honest here the game may look pretty, but it plays pretty poor.
The IGN review still concerns me more.
As for th first impressions, I'm not taking a lot of them for much of anything yet. Go back through our board and Operation Sports board through history and look at first impressions. Unless the game is a total piece of garbage, the first few pages are usually fairly positive.
There is a good reason for that. I'm as guilty as anyone of it. I just paid $60 for game, I WANT TO LIKE IT. So my gut instinct when I find something wrong is to be positive of it and hope I can find my way around the kinks. (and lets face it, us die hard sports simmers are used to working our way around the kinks)
The key that I want to see is not only the quality of the posts, but how many there are in a couple of weeks. If there is a lot, it's probably a pretty damned good game. If it dies down or the posts turn nasty, it's an ugly game. I don't put any stock in the 1up review, but one slight thing concerns me:
Hitting a ball to a certain field involves more than just pushing a stick to the right or the left. It's about timing. If you just leave the stick alone, there should be a variety of hits just based on when you swing. Swing late at an inside fastball, you pop the thing up to the first baseman (or maybe fist it over the second baseman if you're strong. Swing early and you rip it down the line or in the hole. Pushing that left stick or not, you should see a wide variety of hits. And you do see those in the PSP version as well as the PS2 version last year.
I'm thinking he's an idiot, but we'll find out later today. :)

I love The Show on the PSP. If it weren't for Puzzle Quest sucking the life out of me, I'd be playing it even more.
I never purchased it for the PS2 and there were some pretty big bugs in the PS2 version anyway. So for my 60 bucks, it isn't just a port. It's a brand new game.
Throw in the fact that I currently own a $600 paperweight because of the complete lack of titles, and this one is a no brainer. :) I really hope this is a fun game. I'd love nothing more than to spend the next few months with it)

Yeah, I think there were a lot of people that didn't buy the PS2 version due to the bugs and knowing that the PS3 version was upcoming.
Also, saying it's a port is probably underselling it a bit. It was originally intended to come out at the same time as the PS2, but was delayed to clean up some issues. Given that the PS2 version had some major bugs and that none of those bugs exist in the PS3 version, it would appear to be a sound decision. The graphics are obviously a major upgrade over the PS2 version as well. It's like night and day (as it should be when they move to the PS3).

I have it now (after going to 3 different stores because their credit card machines weren't working.) Won't be able to play much right now since I go into work at 5.
But if you want me to check anything out let me know.
I guess most of you also visit OPS forums, but in case you missed it, here are the comments from a guy there. An important one for me is that the PS2 bug, where the CPU teams didn't trade in franchise mode is fixed.
A few impressions about franchise/season modes
* First things first, its not that different from MLB '06(I didn't play '07 on PS2.. waited for PS3)
*One of the coolest things that I have seen is that the teams let you know if they are either, rebuilding(sellers at trade deadline), are in a playoff push(buyers at the trade deadline), or are in normal mode(want equal value with all trades). I love this feature!
* The cpu makes trades before and on the trade deadline. Haven't seen any 2 for 1 trades, but these may not be "allowed" in the game. I seen a few blockbuster trades, like Garrett Anderson going to the Giants, Joe Mauer going to the Padres, and Miguel Tejada ending up with the A's.
* There are boatloads, and I mean boatloads of call ups and send downs. Wayyyy to many to mention. But the cpu makes moves. I didn't see any "stupid" moves like Bonds going to the minors or anything of that nature.
* The statistics that are kept are just insane. I can't believe there is this much stat tracking.
* For anyone interested the A's beat the Padres to win the World Series.
* I love the free agent signing period. You have 60 timed days to make offers and sign players. One thing I meant to try and forgot was to trade during the free agent signing period.
* The amateur draft is held at the end of the season. It lasts for 5 rounds.
* You can play the AAA or AA all-star games. Maybe not a big deal to some, but I love this feature.
* I missed the playoffs on all levels. My Cards were in first place at the break, but put together a horrible second half of the season.
* You can play spring training games.
* The schedule changes each year as well as the All-star game location.
Any other questions let me know. I want to get back to playing the game.

Just had a neat play happen. I hit what I thought was a no doubt home run with Nick Markakis, David DeJesus climbs the wall and bring it back. After the play Markakis is walking into the dugout and Roberts tries to talk to him, Markakis picks his glove up and throws it against the wall in the dugout, sits down and puts his head between his legs with his hands on top of his head.
I'm also guessing most, if not all, the coaches are in the game because when I did a mound visit Leo Mazzone came out.
The stadiums look great, as does the crowd. The sound is the best of any sports game I played. The 3 man booth is always talking. The crowd gets loud when it cheers (or boo's when I give up a 3 run HR to Ryan Shealy.)

The animations are so smooth, no hiccups at all. 60 FPS really makes a difference. The player models and faces also look fine to me. I don't see where the IGN reviewer said they had bug eyes.
It's also nice to see that you don't have to kill yourself messing with sliders to get foul balls. I've seen more fouls in 2 innings so far than I would see in a couple games of 2K's baseball game.
Nice Terps, keep making us to salivate until we can pick the game :)
I have read about the amazing sounds in other reviews too, it must really help the immersion factor.
About the faults, if you want even more, in the PS2/PSP versions, if you set the contact at 0 or 1, the variety of hits is amazing, including tons of faults.
The contact slider is not to decide if you make contact or not, but let's say how "thick" is your bat (the baseball one ;) ). So with it at a low value, unless you hit the ball with the middle of the bat, you hit weak balls or fouls way more.

Got in a few games.....
-Crowd sounds and reactions are wonderful. Line drives and long fly balls are both fun. The crowd goes nuts and stands up when you hit a line drive. If an infielder snares it, the crowd moans and sits back down. Same reaction when a long fly ball is tracked down near the wall.
-I let the catchers call my pitches. Worked pretty well. Pitcher/catcher interface is much better IMO than the 2K7 game.
-I like how picking out the pitch or location increases your odds of a well-hit ball while not making it a sure thing that you'll get a hit or a homerun.
-There's definitely HR celebrations in the game, though they are probably not as outrageous as some might like. I personally liked them because they weren't as crazy as in other games.
-Fielding is really smooth. I usually play baseball games with auto fielding because I get so frustrated at missing balls because of clunky fielding interfaces. I didn't have any problems playing this game with manual fielding. Really nice. I did notice one catch animation where the ball and glove looked slightly odd, but nothing major. Certainly didn't affect game play.
-Played the game in 720p and graphics were just fine. I think I'd give the slight nod to 2K7, but the gameplay is a lot more enjoyable on MLB 07. Stadiums are spectacular. I played at Kauffman Stadium in KC. When I went to the mound and brought up the bullpen view, I could hear the fountain water splashes. Very acccurate as the fountains are right next to the bullpen. Loved that.
-I didn't play MLB 06, so maybe this was in that game, but I love the ability to hit the L3 button after a missed swing. It gives you the swing information, allowing you to know what you did wrong. Really nice feature.
Probably won't get to try out any season stuff until the weekend since I have baby duty the next couple of days, but I'm really happy with what I've seen thus far. I can say with great certainty that this game got a major raw deal with that 5.5 review from 1UP. It's definitely a better baseball game than 2K7 IMO.

Played a game as the Twins against the Royals. Veteran difficulty.
---- Plenty of types of hits. No idea what the moron in the one review was thinking.
--- graphics are good, not great
--- frame rate is terrific. The game plays smooth as can be.
--- presentation is what you'd expect. solid menu system.
--- Santana was dominant and ripped through the Royals lineup like you'd expect him to. Santana finished with a complete game 3 hitter, 11k 1 walk.
---- Hit one HR with Cuddyar. Blasted a deep bomb foul with the reigning MVP. Ended up with 11 hits, 3 runs, 6 strike outs and 2 walks. (one intentional) I didn't play this one for patience.
--- Early impressions are favorable. I'm looking forward to playing this more tonight.

It's automatic when the game starts up. It'll tell you to wait for a couple of minutes. (it actually tok mine about 35 seconds)

I went back and did a reread of the 1UP review. The more I read, the more I wondered if we were even playing the same game. I'm really starting to wonder if it's possible he played a beta build of some sort of the game. Most of the things that he said were an issue are simply not an issue. The only thing I agree with on his review is that the player models aren't quite as good on MLB07, but it's a very small difference. I'm just baffled at this point.

Great to hear the positive reviews thus far. Here's hoping there aren't any game killers that crop up as the game gets played more. I'll be attempting to pick it up tomorrow, but will probably head directly into the RTTS mode.

Something cool I just read about, says you can dl sliders directly into your game. That's a pretty damn cool feature, be a lot easier to give other people's sliders a try without having to go through and enter it all manually. No idea how it works though.
I don't have a PS3 yet, and still no plans to, but this is one game that edges me closer to purchase. The PS2 at my house has been running nothing but The Show since I picked it up, and is the only reason the PS2 is still sticking around.
Although I might have to pick up the new MVP. Get me some college action going on.

I just played a few innings cause I wanted to watch the Cards, but I liked what I played. I just couldn't get into 2K7 and I gave that game a good try. I play to have fun more than anything else and for me the main way to score runs in 2K7 was via the home run, this game didn't have that feel. I got $24 for my trade in, so it was a $35 rental. :(
I should also add I suck at the manual fielding, so auto fielding also helps this game in my enjoyment, I play auto field, but I like making the throws and I could do that with The Show. Looking forward to playing more this weekend.

Yeah, I love the downloadable sliders and up to date rosters options. There's some guys over at Operation Sports that do a good job of tinkering with the sliders to find a good setup to optimize the game. In the past, they've had to manually post everything they changed. Now, they'll be able to just point to a name on the Sony servers and everyone can go download their sliders. Really great option.

It will be a LONG time before I get a ps3, but I don't think even with DVI (which I have) you can just hook it up unless it's HDCP compliant or something like that.
Maybe someday I'll just get a Dell 24" widescreen monitor and give the kids my 20" LCD.
I'll reiterate that the psp version has me giddy right now with RTTS. Pitched my first good game last night in AAA, going 5.2 innings allowing only 1 run. There was an option to tell the manager I was upset he pulled me too early, but actually I was started to get hit pretty hard. :)

I don't need a ps3 to tell me they are the same games. In fact, it received better scores on the 360 than it did the ps3.
Next year will be crucial for my console gaming. If 2k sports can offer up a great MLB 2k8 game and EA just tweaks NHL 08, I'll be hunting for a 360 once again. If not, I might break down for a ps3.

I thought NHL2K7 was the better game, control scheme be damned. After about ten minutes of watching the ridiculous EA defense at work, I was already in complete frustration.
As for more The Show impressions:
--- The graphics get better when they go up to 1080p. Why the hell the game doesn't go to the top setting right away and makes me go into the setup options of the PS3 and remove 720 and 1080i so it will go to 1080p is beyond idiotic. I think this is a PS3 thing and not a problem with the game. But how freakin annoying and idiotic can you get?
--- I'm still not sure what the guy who said there were no variety of hits was smoking. I haven't tweaked a slider and I'm seeing hits of all types. Bloopers, lined HR, majestic HR, grounders up the middle, through the 1B/2B hole, through the SS/3B hole. About the only type of hit I haven't seen in about 4 games is a grounder right down the line. I've had a ton go foul, but none have stayed fair.
--- I wish there was a batting practice, pitching practice mode.
--- There are some graphical glitches. Example: I had a lined shot toward the 2B. The ball deflected off his glove into RF and just stopped as if it were in quick sand. I mean, not even a little hop or a tiny roll. The ball just stopped about two feet behind the 2B. There are other similar types of things that happen. Minor annoyances to be sure, but if they become to frequent they could imnpact the game a bit.
--- The new RTTS is pretty bad IMHO. I like the classic better. (and you can go the classic route) The one reviewer was right when he said some of the demands are a bit excessive. I was told to "drive in the run" 4 straight times to the plate in my first game. I went 2/4 with a double and the game winning single and was penalized because I didn't go 4/4. That's a little off if you ask me. Still, I'll probably be playing in this mode more than any other.

I honestly have no idea. Like I said, I just plug it in and see if it works. I did try it on a front projection TV that I have through the DVI and didn't have any issues there either. Perhaps I've been lucky in regards to this HDCP that you're talking about. All of them are relatively new, so that may be why they work OK. I have an old HD rear projection TV from a few years back that doesn't have DVI/HDMI, so I use the component cables on that one.

Completely agree. NHL 2k7 on the 360 is a solid game.
I haven't played RTTS at all yet. Explain the difference between new and old so I'm aware.
In the PS2/PSP and i guess same in the PS3, the main differences between new and classic RTTS are:
* Classic:
- You control all the players from your team unless you manually skip to your next at bat.
- On defense, you control your pitcher and the whole team too.
- No goals set from your manager.
* New:
- The game auto skips to your next at bat, you only play as your player.
- On defense, you control only your player and only in situations where the ball is coming your way.
- Your manager sets different goals, like drive the run, or get in base, or do not strike out etc.
I would say that RTTS is a more pure RPG simulation while the classic is more a mix of RPG and whole team management.
Even when the goals are someway hard to accomplish, I prefer the RTTS mode as i only want to control my player. About the goals, you are not supposed to accomplish all them in every game, else you would get tons of points pretty fast to upgrade your player ratings and it all would be so easy. Just accomplishing half of the goals you are asked to, you get enough points to train your player.

I like to hear that last comment that all of these goals don't always need to be accomplished. Puzzle Quest is much like that in that you get a trial by fire before you finally meet with some success as you move on in the game. I like that they make things more of a challenge.

Yeah, as SP/MR and Closer. If you choose to be a SP, depending on how well you do, you end being used as starter or as reliever.
I tried to be a closer and it's so fun, you usually play the last inning only so the season progresses so fast, also you can really feel what a closer must face trying to keep the lead in close games, so stressing!

In the PSP version, the manager set goals for you in the classic mode as well as the new one. I haven't tried Classic on the PS3 yet.
As a SP, I'm sure I'd be ok with the new one. Some of the things I hated about last nights move into the new one included:
1) Fielding. The game only shows you fielding when you are going to be involved in the play. That's OK on the face of it, but the problem is how many times you AREN'T involved in the play. I wasted 3 minutes to watch Frank Thomas hit a 445 foot HR over my head. Or the SS catch a pop up in the infield. Or a grounder to the SS. You get the drift. You are actually involved in your plays (at least in LF) about half the time it cuts to the screen. Makes no sense to me.
2) As a baserunner, it's incredibly difficult to see what is going on. The base coaches are tough to pick up and it all feels silly. If I were a basestealer, I guess it could be pretty interesting. As a LF power hitter, I found it to be boring as hell. In classic mode on the PSP, I don't have to control my runner.
Those two things really push me to classic if I'm a hitter. If I'm a pitcher, I probably would go with the new system.
If it sounds like I'm complaining a lot about the game, I can assure you right now I'm having a blast with it. It's the best sports game released on the PS3 by far and if you are a die hard baseball fan, this is as close to a system seller as you are going to get. (some people are still insisting the Konami import is an even better game, I'm going to have to find a site to order it from)

I'm guessing they're giving you even the remotest of opportunities to be involved in the play. (e.g. if the wind catches that HR maybe you'd have a tiny chance of climbing the wall to bring it back, or if the grounder goes through the SS's legs you'll need to back him up and decide where to make the throw)

Yeah, I don't mind that part so much. I think a worse design idea would be to only show the plays that you are able to field. Takes away some of the reaction when the ball actually comes to you only on some occasions.
The baserunning does sound a bit boring as Troy describes it. I may consider being a speedy CF just so the baserunning is a bit more fun.

RTTS is in the Ps2 too and is exactly the same, the only problem is that because the "no trades bug" you won't ever be traded to another team, so once you sign a contract, you need to wait for it to expire to become FA and to be able to sign with another team. It's not a major issue imho as a lot of real players are never traded in real life, they just play with a team until they become FAs.
Of course i would prefer the PSP or PS3 version where the trades are being done by the CPU, but if you don't have those consoles, the Ps2 version could be fun too to play in RTTS mode.

I think the same, i'm playing as CF and i always try to jump the wall when a hommer is hitted (have not been able to steal one by now, but i have read some guys that made it). Also when the grounder goes to the 2B, i always try to cover the field behind him in case the ball slips between his legs. I guess it's all about using a bit your imagination to play realisticaly.
To be part of thr whole game in defense could be better, but then the games would last a lot (1 hour minimum) and the advance in your baseball career would take ages, so i'm fine with only being part of 3 or 4 plays on defense to not to only take care of batting.

I actually prefer it to not *always* be a hit to my player, even on the infield. Seems a bit too easy I suppose to always know it's coming to you (have only played the PS2 version thus far). Depends on how often you don't get it of course, but those sort of factors also determine what position I'm going to use while playing. I'm actually quite curious to see what all you have to do as a catcher (if you get to call pitches or not). Anybody know what it's like for them?

Yeah, it's a personal thing. I'm sure some won't be bothered. The baserunning thing is far more annoying to me, especially as a power hitter. (hey, I'm skinny as hell in real life and never had a career HR in baseball, this is my fantasy) :)
The baserunning thing does take up a ridiculous amount of time to. Last night I led off one inning with a single. The next guy up had a 9 pitch at bat and struck out. The next guy had a 7 pitch at bat with a single up the middle. Then a walk. Then a double play ground out. I wasted 5 to 10 minutes of my life simply watching the game from the basepaths. Boring doesn't even begin to describe it for me. :)

Catcher is the perfect position to play... if you don't want any action in defense. You only do anything on wild pitches or in weak hits that go high but close to the batting cage, like once per game or less. At least it's what i saw as i got bored of it fast, you don't have to throw to base on steal attempts etc so don't pick that position unless you want to only concentrate on batting. For me the most fun come from playing SS. CF is fun also, trying to steal some homeruns, but you have like 6 or 7 defensive plays per game so the games take some time to be finished.

Ah, that's too bad, if there was an option there to actually call a game it could be interesting, same for throwing out base stealers.
Just picked this up at lunch, going to try 3B and closer to begin with, then probably 2B, SS and CF eventually.

I just played my first game in RTTS, as a second baseman. I went 3-5 and was 1 of 2 on my goals.
Also had the time to play my first full exhibition game. I lost 2-0 to the Devil Rays. I was pitching with Loewen and was doing great, but I walked a couple and they scored on a hit and run, then Jonny Gomes blasted a HR off of me in the 6th. I even out hit them, 10 to 7, but couldn't produce any runs. Just like the real O's! haha.

I'm a bit disappointed that in RTTS mode it appears there's no way to get points for defense? I wanted to make a really defense oriented SS, and then focuse on batting later, but it appears if you go that route you'll struggle getting points. I hope this is something they add in next year, or am I missing it? Do you get some points for plays?

Nope, you are not missing anything, that is the only gripe i have with RTTS.
Defensive performance doesn't have any reward as your GM doesn't set you any defensive goal. But you can't neglect your defensive ratings either, else once you reach the majors, you won't be the starter at your position, as your GM/Coaches look at your overall ratings to decide if you deserve the starting spot.
When you start a new career, if you want to develop your player faster, you need to concentrate on developing your offensive ratings. Once they are good enought, you can expend your training points on the defensive ratings.
To improve realism, i have set myself a house rule about forcing myself to train defense once every 3 offensive trainings.

1) Classic RTTS is much, much better if you are a power hitting OF. The goals are still there by the way.
2) Found my first consistent bug: If you have a runner on second and a deep fly ball moves him to third, you get a sac fly. It's happened three times in a row in situations like that. No at bat charged, SF awarded.
3) I'm an 18 year old rookie in spring training, hitting .316 in 60 at bats and the team is ANGRY with me. The manager is content, but the team is ANGRY. Umm. . . WTF?
4) Game is still pretty good. Enjoying it a lot.

There's been a lot of complaints from MLB 2K7 owners about the total lack of any patch on their game despite some major issues that the developer knows about. This seems like it could easily be remedied with a patch. It will be interesting to see if SCEA releases a patch to clean up the loose ends a bit. That would be a really good thing for the gamers as well as from a PR perspective.
There's been a lot of complaints from MLB 2K7 owners about the total lack of any patch on their game despite some major issues that the developer knows about. This seems like it could easily be remedied with a patch. It will be interesting to see if SCEA releases a patch to clean up the loose ends a bit. That is the thing that pissed me more about next gen, one of the best new features of the 360 and ps3 was that finally we could download patches to fix our console games like we do in PC's... but i'm afraid the companies are not paying enough attention to it, as probably they prefer us used to no patching in consoles.

The major PS3 games have actually been quite good about it. Resistance has got several good fixes and added new maps and game modes at no cost. Motorstorm is also releasing a new update later this month that includes enhancements, a new track and some additions to the 'career' mode. The fact that those products have been updated so well gives me hope that they will treat their baseball title just as well.

Started up a closer career in the new RTTS mode last night and enjoyed it immensely. Time wise, I can play EHM on the laptop in between appearances too ;)
Going to be a long road though, only have one semi major league pitch and got roughed up pretty good in a few of my spring league appearances. So far things are going smoother in the minors, but I really have to hope against a callup any time soon (which shouldn't be a problem unless virtual BJ Ryan goes the same way as his real life counter part).
Seen some very sweet diving plays/animations and completely enjoying the game so far. The graphics aren't going to blow you away, but it's felt pretty solid otherwise.
A note on the goals, I came in with a runner on second and was asked to get a ground ball. Accidentally struck the guy out and it still counted as a successful goal met so good to see that there is some leeway in there.

Got the game last night but no time to play. However tonight I got in two "season" games with the Cubs. The game, like last year, plays a good game of baseball. Things feel right.
I agree with what others have posted regarding some of the reviews. I too wonder if they know baseball or actually spent any real time playing the game.
Home run celebrations are in as well as replays.
I've read a few reviews and thought someone wrote you could only play a season in franchise mode (maybe it was 2k7?). Not true, there is a standard 162 game season mode like last years ps2. I have no interest in building a dynasty with this game I just want to get on the field and do some hitting and pitching. When I want to run the front office I use OOTP.
I've seen tons of different kind of hits. Down the line, swinging bunts, Hr's, IF'er diving for a ball only to have just get under his glove, misplayed ball at 2b where the 2bman didn't panic but picked up the ball and still nabbed the runner at first, foul balls jerked down the line and careening off the stands at field level. This is in just two games I can't imagine the game being missing very many varieties of batted balls.
Very easy to d'load updated rosters, according to the file name mine are accurate as of May 18th.
Only played out two full games but the fielding decisions of the AI have been fine. I did get the runners on first and second with less than two outs, grounder to third, and he did throw to first never attempting a double play. HOWEVER it was a hard groundball down the line that the 3bman had to go to the ground to pick up. No chance of anything but a play at 1b which he made. The AI has had no problem turning the DP against me (again only two games).
Couple of cool things that happened while I was playing.
Runner on first GB to second and he flips to Theriot at SS but he drops the ball. The ump calls the runner out saying Theriot lost the ball on the transfer. Jerry Narron, the Reds manager, comes out to argue and the ump replies to him using body language to show that the SS lost the ball on transfer. Narron proceeds to move to the SS side of the bag using body language to demonstrate why his runner should not have been called out. Looked very cool, the ump giving his explanation and trying to turn his back and walk away. While Narron continues to follow him trying to make his point.
Dropped third strike and throw out at first. Not earth shattering news that this is in the game but the batters reaction was interesting. He didn't realize at first that Barret had dropped the ball and so hesitated a couple of seconds before trying to get to first base.
Game sounds great with 5.1 surround sound. The PA announcer comes out the back speakers and gives the feeling of sitting in the stands at a ballpark.
Played about 3 exhibition innings at Fenway and the PA guy was announcing something about the public transit train station outside the ballpark. Never been to Boston but is there a station there like the "Red Line" outside of Wrigley?
I did have one annoying thing in the two Cincinnati games. In both games the Reds started Freel at third and Hamilton in CF. The problem came when before the first pitch a defensive replacement was announce at 3b. In game one Conine took Freel's place and in game two it was Juan Castro. Freel never played in either game despite being in the starting lineup. Something I'll
keep an eye on but not a gamebreaker for me. My serious dynasty is done in
OOTP, The Show is more for entertainment.
Graphics aren't like nhl 07 but they are good enough for me. I like the clear backgrounds much better than 2k7's blurred ones (only played the demo on the 360). Stadiums look great but the grass could use some work for next years version. So, like on the ps2, it's not the prettiest game but it, IMHO, has the best gameplay, at least so far.
It will be interesting to see if, after getting in 30 or 40 games, the first impressions hold up.
Wooooot the postman just came with the pack from Canada for me, MLB07 and College Hoops! I never expected it this soon, has been only 3 days since it was sent to me and our post service is not specialy awesome.

Finally had my first hit in AAA (I'm a SP), it was a double down the LF line. It felt really cool and the way they have it setup so you run the bases as your players bat is really tense. I made it to 3rd on a FC and then on a WP, I hesitated a bit too long and was thrown out.
RTTS is quite fun.

More thoughts:
The tuning of the game in RTTS could use some work. I can simply destroy AA pitching now. (I'm talking to the tune of a .600 batting average with 7 HR in 32 at bats) I'm pathetic at AAA. It's not "me" :) I'm hitting the same type of pitches in both, but in AAA, I had two extra base hits in 113 at bats.
Coming out of spring training my first year, I became the utility guy at AAA. Spen three months getting about 40 at bats before I was sent down. Went to AA and tore it up and then got a chance to play at AAA. (though still not everyday) I wish they'd make sure you had a full time role in the minors. I'm an 18 year old kid, cut me some slack and give me at bats. I can't improve without em.
Funny thing in AA. I had a game where my first 3 at bats were triple, homer, double. It just so happened I only had a goal on one of those at bats. I came up three more times and did this: HR, Double, Walk. So I ended up going 5-6 with 7 RBI, 15 total bases and five extra base hits. good thing I got rewarded for the hits, because I went 1 for 4 on my goals The last three at bats the goal was to hit for the cycle. Because I had two extra base hits and a walk, it failed me.
Second year I signed with another team and am down in AAA hitting much better.
Mizzou - Glad you like the new one. I found baserunning to be horribly boring. To each his own. :)
The game REALLY needs some sort of practice mode on the PS3. Why they couldn't include a batting cage is beyond me.
The dugouts are empty for most of the game. It's funny getting the high fives from the team after a good play when you replay the same play and nobody is in the dugout. :)
Still having fun and it's been three days. This is a keeper. No doubt about it.
I'm enjoying it a lot too, by now only in RTTS as i have a CF and SP careers going. I'm thinking on starting a franchise with the Marlins, but the problem i have is that at 1 hour per game, it will take me ages to finish a season. I'll probably set a house rule about playing one game and simming two, to reduce the played games to 1/3.

I finally got around to playing some games in the RTTS career. I created a CF with LF as his secondary position. Started my career with the Royals. Got off to a really fast start as I completed all of my goals in the first two spring training games. Really like the level of difficulty even on the middle levels. I'm still liking this game just as much, if not more, than my initial impressions. It's a really good game and I'm likely to get a lot of gameplay out of it.

Playing the PS2 version, and having fun with it so far - my LF/OF for the Nationals sucked hard during most of spring training, but had a couple of two-hit games near the end and earned a spot in AAA. Unforunately, I'm not starting there, so development is hurting.

Just entering my 4th season with my closer (PS3, new version of RTTS).
Started off in AA in the Jays system, traded along with Frank Thomas to Cincy a third of the way into the season and made my first appearance in the majors, filling in for an injury. Closed 15 games during that stint, went to AAA for 6 scoreless appearances then came back up to end up with 20 major league saves as an 18 year old.
Got offers from TB, Baltimore, the Yankees and the Reds, all in the 6-7 year range. Didn't want to play for any of the AL teams so negotiated down to a 2 year deal with Cincy. Spent the second year mostly in AA with a couple stints at AAA, the third year being very similar, getting a call up to AAA with 2-3 weeks left in the season, then getting called back up to the majors after the AAA season was finished. Picked up 5 or so saves prior to the season ending there and entered free agency again.
This time Toronto came calling again and I've started my fourth season on the major league roster (rated as the 2nd best of 4 closers in the organization, so this may be another injury fill in) and played to my first appearance this season. Was a AA all star my second and third seasons, hoping I don't get the chance to have that honor again. Shouldn't as I've developed three major league pitches now (was really only at one the first year, two for most of the next two seasons). Almost time to start working on bunting or potentially a fourth pitch, but this game has easily had the most fist pump moments of any game I've played in a while, though hopefully those situations become less and less frequent as I start getting into fewer jams :D

Best Buy is throwing in a free BR movie with purchase. I also saw a deal where a retailer was selling the system and throwing in a 2nd controller for free ($50 value which you'd likely pay otherwise). Just don't pay full price as there are some deals out there with some decent throw-ins for the same price.

Just curious...after getting 20 major league saves as an 18 year old, why did you go back down to AA?
Combination of blown saves (had 4-5 of those), inflated ERA (I tend to either close things out fast, or was giving up multiple runs in blown situations, think my MLB ERA that season was around 5.60) and organizational depth. Even when I got those 20 saves I was still listed as the 4th best closer in the organization, and while I never checked, I'm assuming that I was only up due to injuries, then moved around to fill holes where needed.
I was hoping to be AAA worthy the following season, but as it was, playing in AA I was able to dominate a bit more and raise my K/9 ratio enough to help fully develop my second pitch (absolutely necessary to have in AAA in this game) so it all worked out well.
That said, it was also one reason why I didn't resign with Cincy after my second contract. From what I could tell all the other guys were going to be back, so AAA was probably my ceiling for the next year or two. Whether or not it'll work out in Toronto I don't know yet (will find out tonight as I'll probably get a majority of this season played), but I had to take the chance :D

As has been mentioned before, outside of the player models, the better game is MLB 07: The Show. I had similar issues with 2K7 when I played it on the PS3. Just a really tough game to get into that looks nice. Personally, I'm really tired of developers opting for pretty graphics over gameplay. I'd love to have both, but if I had my choice, I'd take average graphics/great gameplay over great graphics/average gameplay anyday. That's likely why I dislike EA games so much. It's typical of my frustration with this mode. You get called up and demoted for random reasons. I'm hitting .365 and slugging close to .700 in AAA. I'm playing about 4 games a week in some bizzare random platoon that has no rhyme or reason. I start against both lefties and righties. Sometimes I play three days in a row, other times I play every other day for a week.
I'm listed as the starting LF for the team, yet I'm playing in just over 60% of the games. The previous year I was average at AAA, got domoted to AA and got hot as could be, moved back up to AAA and ketp hitting well, moved to The Show and did ok (.270 avg, .380 OBP) and was demoted back to AA after two weeks.
Ummm, WTF?
Despite all of that, I really love the game. It's an incredible effort.
Would I purchase a PS3 just because of this? No. I don't think it's THAT good. Resistence, Oblivion (if you've never played it) and MLB are still the only three worthwhile games on the system at this point. If you are the type that can play one really good game for a few months, then it may be worth it.
Looking at release dates, I still don't see anything thrilling upcoming for Sony. Lair has a shot, but I'm not sure that's making the June release date. i see nothing else out there for another three months.

Motorstorm is a glaring omission in that list. The single player game is just OK (somewhat short), but the gameplay in multiplayer mode is well-worth the price of admission. With the new tracks, cars, etc. incoming, it will likely only get better.

I'm typically doing other things while playing, so I don't notice - but in RTTS at least, it's generally in the 10-20s range (guesstimate) between an at-bat and my next appearance in the field. The transition into a game runs a little long, but out of the game is fine.

Unfortunately, the 3 games I really play are NCAA, The Show and College Hoops. 1) I don't want my "concerns" of the game to mislead anyone. I'm enjoying the game. I've probably put 12 hours into the thing already and I'm having a blast with it. I do have concerns and I don't think it's a system seller, but it is a very good effort.
2) Motorstorm didn't do anything for me. Ditto F1. Motorstorm had a better shot to impress me as I've always liked off road type games, but it didn't do anything for me. Essentially, the PS3 for me is The Show and Resistence. That's it. (I'm not into one on one fighting games at all, Virtua Fighter is a game I'll never play) And at this point, the titles for the next few months do nothing for me. That's why it was critical to me this game was as good as advertised. Without it, I own a $600 paperweight. Now, don't take my word for all of this. Go visit game rankings sites. Check out game vids of games already out. Go to some gaming sites with release dates and see if there is anything you are interested in.
For me, I don't see anything at all until Lair and after that it looks dead until the sports titles come out in July. (and to be honest, unless something changes, I'll probably buy most of my sports games on the 360 as that's where I have friends I can play games online with)
3) One really cool thing about RTTS that I haven't seen talked about yet. After playing in the spring training sites and the minor league parks, it's an incredible feeling to play in a big stadium. My first MLB game was in Jacob's Field against Mike Mussina and the Yankees. My second game was in Fenway against Beckett. I struck out my first at bat just looking at the park. When a game can give you a sence of awe like that, I'm impressed.

OK, I just hit my first point of pure pissed off frustration with the game. Starting my third year, I'm now 21 and my skills are moving along. Start the year out at AAA and catch fire. 71 at bats, a .450 average and over .550 OBP. That gets me a call up on May 6. (that's right, despite that average, I'd played in only 18 of the teams 27 games to that point. I click sim to next appearence and I'm a pinch runner on May 14. My next game is against the Yankees at Jacob's again. Guess the date?
August 28. I go 0-3 with a SF and get sent back down to AAA on September 7. I have 3 games left in my minor league season now. So my 21 year old season has consisted of 74 at bats and 20 total games. (1 as a pinch runner) with no injury.
If this were to continue, I'll never bother with RTTS again unless I find a cheat code to be a full time major leaguer to start. I'm going to have to go back to an old save and hope it doesn't happen again. . . but there is no way in hell it should have ever happened. I'm beyond frustrated with the game right now.

I have SO many frustrations with MLB 2k7, but I can overlook them becuase the game to me is so much fun.

I understand that, but it's frustrating to spend the amount of time it takes to play through a few seasons and watch your plyaer stay stagnent in an entirely unrealistic manner.
It's been awhile sinse I've been this frustrated with any game. It's a good game, I'll get over it. But it's a ridiculous bug.

I know they're probably not superstars, but how is the organization stacked at your position Troy? I'm midway through my fourth season now and haven't been sent down from the majors despite being ranked as the second best closer under contract. Right now I'm carrying a sub 1.00 ERA and have only blown one save opportunity, so I'll definitely be sharing your frustration if I get sent down without blowing 3-4 chances in a row, and badly.

I'm ranked third in the organization for LF. It's not that I was sent down that pisses me off. I actually finished off the season for kicks. I finished the year progression with a -8 points. If I didn't go back to a previous save, not only is it a year wasted, it's TWO years wasted because I'd have to hit like crazy just to get me back up where I was at the start of the next season.
That's insanity and it's a horrific design decision. You have to make sure the guy from the RTTS is playing everyday until he turns 23 or 24. I'm just stunned at how the designers could allow something like that to happen. I hit 450 in 71 at bats and my punishment is I lose a year's worth of work. Unbelievable.
I'm just going to have to save after every week until I get to The Show on a permanent basis. If I'm forced to go through this again the RTTS mode will be shut off for good on my console. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

Just had an interesting first, in to save a game, fastball for a ball, then a hook and I've got the batter completely fooled. Horrible looking swing and I'm already planning my next pitch. Then a cut to the batter letting his bat drop to the ground and clutching his chest, and is then removed from the game apparently injuring himself on the swing. Not sure if anybody else has seen that or if that's been in games past, but it's the first time I've come across that one.

I will say, you are really sensitive when it comes to the ps3.
back to discussing MLB.......
No, it has nothing to do with the system. I just chuckle when you constantly hype games on this board that end up being average at best. 2K7, NHL 07 and Madden 07 are just three examples.
Some links where people said that NHL 07 was the game of the year would also be appreciated. Hadn't seen that yet.

Defining moment of an early career. Spent my entire fourth season with the Jays, blowing just two saves (and making the AL All Star Team). First blown save still ended up as a win for the team, but the second one was a brutal outting against the Yankees with A-Rod hitting a 3 run walk off job.
Next appearance two days later, against the Yankee's with a 1 run lead and a runner on second. Struck out Abreu, Jeter and A-Rod in order to really seize the closers job and didn't blow a save the rest of the season.
Unfortunately, 51 saves doesn't mean much when your team only wins 86 games on the season, so fingers crossed that we can actually compete in the next few seasons. What a difference having a third major league pitch makes though.

I just bought the game yesterday for the PS2. I'm in my first season and having a lot of fun as a Cardinals CF, even though I'm not very good. I seem to be hitting the ball reasonably hard, but it generally seems to be right at someone. I'm batting just under .200 after about 20 games.
Sadly I had to start a second RTTS game since I wasn't informed at the beginning that I didn't have enough room for a save on my memory card, and there is no way to delete anything off the card while in the game. I'm also disappointed that it can't save anything to the hard drive.
Lots of fun so far though.

To be honest, I don't give a rats ass what you think about it. I've hyped some games at first, only to be let down after weeks of playing, so what? Unlike you, I find out for myself most of the time.
With console games, it takes awhile to find out if it has longevity or not. Initial impressions are usually favorable, what can I say?
Most people like The Show, but read the reviews and you'll see most are lower than MLB 2k7 - so does that mean you didn't want to pick it up?
Get over yourself.

I've consistantly said that if you're buying a console solely for games right now (no HD media uses), that the Xbox 360 is the system you should buy. I guess I'm not very good at being negative towards the system.

I think I got mine with FF11. Around that time many games would use the HD, but they certainly didn't require it. Recent games won't even offer to save anything to the HD. Disappointing really.
Here are three awesome guides for the game, pretty deep and tons of info in them.

First of all, thanks to MizzouRah for parting with his PSP and this game. I've been having a blast. Until tonight...
Okay, so I started my career as an 18 year old closer in the Marlins organization. Figured it was a good situation with what they had at the position, plus it would be fun to play against the NL East (I'm a Met fan).
After a great Spring Training, I got placed in AAA and was the Isotopes' closer. Cool. I dominated throughout the first month of the season, picking up 8 saves (didn't blow any) while posting a 1.13 ERA. Got called up to the big club on May 2nd, and went right into the closer's role, where I stayed for the rest of the year. My numbers: appeared in 39 games, 2.41 ERA, 28 saves, 1 blown, 37.1 IP. Excellent start to my career.
In 2008, it was more of the same. I made the All Star team, and had a 1.60 ERA with 28 saves (2 blown). Not bad for a 19 year old right?
Apparently, not good enough. I was demoted in late August. Okay, maybe there could be a reason for it...not sure what it would be, but maybe they wanted me to work on not letting inherited runners to score or something. So I pitched in 1 AAA game...and then was demoted to AA. I simmed through the rest of the season...and then Florida released me. A 19 year old 101 MPH throwing closer, 4 months after being named an All Star. Oh, and then Florida was one of the teams who offered me a contract the next season.
Luckily I had saved my game about a week before I was sent down, so I'm going to reboot and see if it happens again. If it does, there's gonna be a problem...

I could be completely wrong, but I think you're doing too well, too soon. I started my career(s) on All Star and it took me a few seasons as a pitcher to start making progress - as upgrades were few and far between.
Not sure if that's your issue... just a thought. (I also always used the new RTTS option)
Either way, it seems like a potential issue.

Well I am playing on pro, so that's probably why I'm doing so well. I figured a quick career as a closer (50 appearances a season) was a good way to learn about the game before trying a career as an everyday player.

I'm still new to The Show, but I think the "release" was just because your contract ran out. Probably not the best wording, but not as bad as it sounds.

My level of frustration with the game is growing by the second.
As a 21 year old power hitter, I put up these numbers:
.338, .414, .710 28 doubles, 51 HR, 142 RBI, 108 runs scored. I was named MVP of the league, MVP of the ALCS. I was the cleanup hitting on a team that led the league in runs.
I'm due for a new contract. I get an offer of 1,7 per year for 8 years. I get three other offers of 1.5 or under per year for 7 years. I go ahead and sign the 1.7 million dollar offer after negotiating it down to 2 years. (it ends up being about a million a year) I start the following season in AAA. You read that right. AAA.
Lets look at some other things that happened during the season. In 503 at bats I had to swing at a pitch other than a fastball less than 20 times. I'm at default all star difficulty. Screw the location bonus, just key on fastball, wait and pound.
I could tweak the settings, but after getting sent back to AAA after winning a league MVP, I'm not sure it's worth the trouble.
I'll spend some more time in franchise mode, but the enjoyment I had for the game at the start has waned considerably.

I've also seen some AI issues, which is pretty concerning for how little I've actually played out games. A long time ago, I stopped counting how many pitchers I've had to pitch to in the 9th inning when I'm brought in for a save. If I had to ballpark, I'd say that in my 100 or so appearances, a relief pitcher had batted 10 or 15 times. When you figure out the amount of times that the 9th spot in the order would even come up during 100 outings, that's a very high number.
Also, I'm not sure ERA is being calculated correctly all the time. I've seen a couple times where I left a game having given up a run and it says my ERA was 0.00. Thinking that maybe there was an error I didn't notice, I started paying more attention...and found times where I was given a 0.00 ERA after giving up solo homers.
You guys probably read more about this stuff...has this been brought up before?

I have seen a couple of odd stat calculations. On opening day a batter came to the plate who was 0-for-1 for the game with a 1.000 batting average. In the first playoff game someone came to the plate with a 2.000 batting average. Seems fairly minor, but a little odd.
I'm still loving RTTS, but I'm a AAA-level CF who is still playing in AAA, so I haven't seen anything too crazy.

My review of the game will be finished tonight or tomorrow. Had I reviewd the game last week, I'd have given it a 9. Now the rating is sliding fast.
I've seen some scoring issues (like a fly ball to RF sending the runner fron second to third being registered a SF) But none of those are enough to really kill the game. The ridiculous promotion/demotion standard in RTTS has soured me on that mode for good. As has the horrible pitching model. There is no way I should be getting a fastball in the zone every at bat to hit. Pitchers should figure that out and punish me for looking only at fastballs. Instead they keep feeding em in there. Even guys like Santana.
It just shouldn't happen.
I'l come back to the game again at some point, it's fun to play. But for now I'm going to work on Forza 2 for awhile and Mass Effect is due out soon. That could spell the end for MLB: The Show.

I'm having fun with the game. I don't play RTTS I only play single season with my Cubs. I've seen the sac-fly for runners advancing from second to third but like you say not a game-breaker for a console game.
I'm playing on Hall of Fame level using sliders by nemesis (sp) after reading his posts at operation sports. He does have his sliders on The Show's site for d'load, nice feature. Right now I'm something like 10-15 and getting a very good
variety in my games. The game is generating believable stats, IE nobody is hitting .600. But guys that are good hitters are around .300 while the pitchers and utility players struggle at the plate. I can certainly tell the difference when Zambrano pitches compared to the rest of my starters. Never played out a full 162 game schedule on a console but might make it this year with The Show on the ps3.
I understand the disappointment you guys are having with RTTS. But since I am not interested in that I am still rating this game very high for fun and acceptable stats.

(PS2) What level are you playing at? I moved from Veteran to (err... one above Veteran) recently, and noticed that I started getting less fastballs in the zone. I can still generally count on a couple fastballs for strikes if I'm patient, but I'm getting less than on the earlier levels. Perhaps it varies as you get higher?

All signs point to Mass Effect being delayed until September. Considering that Bioware did the same sort of delays for final polishing to KOTOR and Obsidian wasn't able to do that with KOTOR 2, I think the delays are a good thing. The screen shots that have already been released look phenomenal, and I think that in combination with the story and gameplay could be a real system mover for the 360 this holiday system.

I have API turned off and that seems to cure the issue with fastballs being thrown all the time. It seems like the catcher calls for the best pitch most of the time, and for most pitchers it happens to be the fastball. Not to mention it makes it harder for yourself to pitch because you have to rely on your own judgement.

Yes that is the key, TroyF, set API to Off and you will stop to see all those fastballs thrown to the strike zone. I'm also using nemesis sliders with API off and i'm seeing lots of variety.
About the RTTS problem, for what i read here and at OPS, it seems that the AI GM pays more attention to your overall ratings than to your stats when deciding on which you should be playing, that is why if because the level you play in, or because you are so good playing, if you put too good stats that are not matching your overall level, you get promoted and demoted a lot. If your ratings progress in pace with your stats, you won't see that weird issues, it's a matter of finding the right sliders/level. I prefer to struggle in my first years as a young players do, if you are the mlb king in your second season, those weird issues will happen.

To me that's an inherent flaw with the game. Lets say for the sake of arguement I find the PERFECT slider set. It fits my level to a T. But, I go through a hot stretch. As happens in baseball sometimes, all my bloop hits fall, and I hit .330 over a month and a half. That's the worst thing that can happen for my development. Now I'm screwed. My year is now wasted. Same thing if it goes the other way. I have a sluggish start I could end up as a utility man in AA getting 200 at bats on the year and screwing my development.
The game needs to be smart enough to combine your ratings and your statistics. Why do I want to invest 5 or 6 hours to not do my best, but to try like hell and get the stats the GAME wants me to have so I can develop on the curve the GAME wants me to develop on? I'm sorry, that's a fatal flaw for RTTS for me.
I'll try the pitch thing and see what happens. Maybe it'll be good for a franchise mode. We'll see.

Agree with you about it being a flaw, i was not defending it but explaining how i think it works. It should have in account both stats, performances and ratings but it seems it's not.
