what better.... ;)

Seriously though, I have not really been paying attention to the latest and greatest as far as the consoles are concerned and then I saw a demo of the X-Box 360 at a shop inside the office complex here and my jaw dropped.

After I get home next month I have decided (now I just have to convice the wife) that it's about time to upgrade from my X-Box. Now the question is which of the three to chose from. They all most likely have their advantages.

Is the X-Box 360 backwards compatible?

How do the 360 and PS3 compare on the flashy graphics front?

I know the Wii won't measuer up graphically but does the interactive controller push it's fun factor beyond the others?

Which may have the better game list to choose from? (I am guessing it goes 360, PS3, Wii)

Overall, which would those who may have had a chance to play more than one recommend?

Afterall, the wife wants a new couch with the tax money so I get something too right? ;) Hey, don't try to say I get the couch too, this is not a time for logic and practicality...

Thanks in advance for your responses....

Is the X-Box 360 backwards compatible?

Kinda. Only about 60% of Xbox games play on Xbox 360, and you have to have either Xbox Live or the ability to burn a CD from a file downloadable from xbox.com.

How do the 360 and PS3 compare on the flashy graphics front?

PS3 holds its own, but Xbox 360 has had a year to do its thing, and plenty of A-list titles to do it with. Give PS3 a year or so to build up its library if you want an honest comparison.

I know the Wii won't measuer up graphically but does the interactive controller push it's fun factor beyond the others?

It's gonna depend on the software. Every system has games that have awkward controls. Difference is, when a game isn't done right on Wii, it's going to be more blatantly obvious. At the same time, when a game is done RIGHT on Wii...it's going to be more blatantly obvious.

Which may have the better game list to choose from? (I am guessing it goes 360, PS3, Wii)

Probably more like 360, PS3, Wii right now. PS3 doesn't have much about which to write home, but there are plenty of promising games on the horizon.

Again, give it a year. You're asking for comparisons between a system that's been out for 14 months and a couple systems that a) have been out for 2-3 months, and b) have radically different interactivity methods. Software comparisons are going to be tepid at best for a while.

Overall, which would those who may have had a chance to play more than one recommend?

I've played all three, although I've spent significantly more time with Xbox 360 and Wii. If I had it to do over, I'd buy the Wii in a heartbeat. I didn't pay for my Xbox 360 last year, but if you put me back then with the money and the knowledge of what I'd play in the subsequent 12 months, I'd do that, too.

PS3? I've played 2 or 3 games. The rest either don't look interesting, or I've played on Xbox 360. Again, too early for me to draw a fair comparison because the PS3 hasn't had a chance to really show off any exclusives yet except for Resistance, and I didn't find that entertaining enough to compel me to spend $500 (or $600) on the system.

I was a big PS2 guy and stayed far away from the first XBox. In fact I have not played one even now. I got a 360 though last year, and was pretty skeptical in doing so.

I am now a big 360 fan. The PS3 is going to be just as good and maybe even better, but that time is atleast a year away in my point of view if not a little more. 360 has more games, and some argue that the graphics potential has not even been met yet.

Downside, as stated in other threads, is the 360 has no hdmi connection right now. But a vga adapter gives pretty darn good HD signal from if. I had a PS3 for a month and never opened it. We returned it a few days ago (good thing to since I am suddenly unemployed). I just didn't see a reason to keep it, there were no games I saw that I really wanted to get. Tony Hawk's Project 8 is probably amazing, but it was amazing enough for me on the 360 already so I could care less about the PS3 version.

I say you can't go wrong with a 360 right now, but I see the draw of the other two systems for sure. I just see the PS3 as a system for a year from now.....

For right now, I'd go with the 360. It's got some great games and it's had a year head start on the competition. Xbox Live has even more of a head start. I haven't played the Wii, but it really looks intriguing.

Won't get into it here since I created a pretty big thread on this subject, but I am now a Nintendo fan for life. Have played all three consoles, none come close to the Wii. Hell I'd rather have a gamecube than a 360 or ps3 as of now. Im now officially a Nintendo fanboy.

Ditto. My 360 didn't get as much play as I would have liked in the 1st few months, but now there is a good selection of games that I enjoy. Once it is easier to find, I also plan on getting a Wii (primarily for my wife who wants one.)

I happen to have both and both are very good. I bought a 360 anticipating it would be spring or later before I could get a ps3. However my wife ran across a ps3 (20g) and picked it up in case I wanted it and we kept both.

With the ps3 there is virtually no noise from the drive or fans. Nice when watching a movie (ps3 is in our living room hooked up to the big tv).

The game quality IMHO is pretty much the same but as others have said the 360 is 14 months along while the ps3 is 2 months old. Hard to compare fairly, I think it will be a year or so before that comparison can be made.

The controller for the 360 wins easily but the ps3 controller is still the same as the ps2, not a bad thing.

Can't really comment on online play since it's something that has never really interested me.

I haven't read of any heat problems with ps3, other than in closed display cases. But then my 360 has yet to overheat on me either, though the problem is well known (but maybe fixed in later batches and not as much a problem now?).

For me if I could only keep one it would be the ps3. $100 more for the 20g drive (same size as the 360's) but with a blue ray player that probably goes for $800 to a $1000(?)by itself. If you don't care about blue ray the two seem to be on pretty equal footing. It becomes a bet on whether you think the ps3 will be the more powerful system in the long run when both systems reach their respective peaks.

I voted for the Wii, I love that little guy. But I can see why many vote 360 as well. I was flamed for this in another thread, but I think the PS3 stinks and will end up as the odd man out in this generation.

PS3's are in stock everywhere, and Wii's are not. Wii was almost the top seller in December, despite being out-of-stock everywhere.

360 is awesome for my needs, but I think Nintendo may pull the upset this time around. We'll see what happens...

Where did you read that the Wii was almost the top seller in December? What I have read is that the 360 is up to a 51% marketshare and sold more units then the PS3 and Wii combined.

Right now, its at 51 xbox 360, about 39 Wii, and 10 PS3

BUT, the Wii has only been out for less than 2 months, whereas x360 has been out for about 8 months. They think that by early March, there will be more Wiis than xbox 360s. Honestly, if nintendo could produce them faster, I think they already would have passed xbox360.

The big thing about the Wii is that games are designed for the controller, so its not going to be like any of the older strange controllers where only one game used them well.

My though it this will be the same as the Nintendo DS vs the PSP. The PSP is faster hardware, but there are about 10 times as many Nintendo DS's out there now.

Why? Its more fun.

The problem is, you're mixing your numbers.

The Xbox sold something like 2 million units domestically in December, Wii sold 1.8 million units.

On the other hand, if you want to look at life-to-date numbers, Xbox is past the 10 million installed units mark, while Wii is close to 4 million overall (IIRC) and PS3 is at something like just under 1.5m.

I think the PSP is far much more of a multimedia player than the DS. Its games look superior...the problem is that much of the games are simply ports of PS2 games. There aren't many original games made for the PSP. As it was said before, games make the platform...and the DS has the games.

Right now, I vote XBox 360, but once the Wii starts getting more games out (if done right), that might be my choice in 6-12 months.

This is dangerous, right about now I am thinking of just how I can figure out a way to convince the wife that we need both the 360 and the Wii. Any advice on that? ;)

So far I would say that I am leaning towards the 360 for the right now reasons. Definitely thanks to everyone for your responses.

360 at the moment, but I'll get a WII when I can find one.

The PS3 is the only gaming system I have ever passed up multiple times despite having the chance to buy it. They are all over the place.

When it's all said and done, I think the WII will destroy the rest of this generation. I think the 360 will also stay ahead of the PS3 and that Sony will end up third. The only prayer they have is Blu Ray, a price reduction, and a glut of games that can sell the system. I don't think Blu Ray is gonna do it, I don't think they can afford a huge price reduction (and they'll still be behind the other systems anyway) and the glut of games is over a year away at a minimum.

I was planning on getting a PS3 sometime in late spring, early summer, but nothing I've seen of the schedule of releases to that point is going to be enough to get me to pull the trigger. I'm probably looking at next Christmas, or next spring before I even consider it again.

I was heading out to play hockey at 5 in the morning on friday and went buy a toys r us and there was already a substantial line up to get a wii. I know someone who works in the mall near toys r us and the rumour was the first people were there at 3 ish, when the store opens at 10.

Well, that seems easy: "I'd like to get a Wii but they're so hard to find so I'll settle for a 360 now and get a Wii when I can find one" Get the 360, and then in a week or so, start searching high and low for a Wii ;)

I see no reason not to hold off on getting the PS3 until a significant price drop.

This is certainly an interesting poll, especially the results. I think the fact that the 360 is pulling a 64% rate right now says a lot more about the gamers in this forum than anything else.

1. The Wii isn't going to do well when compared to the other two consoles amongst this group because there are generally 25+ year old gamers in this forum. They're generally going to buy the 360/PS3 systems because they prefer the high-end graphics over the Wii as their primary system.

2. The 3:1 ratio with 360 beating the PS3 is mostly due to the lack of games for the PS3 and the installed base of the 360. It certainly makes sense, especially considering only the North American audience. Until the games start showing up for the PS3, that probably won't change much.

3. The low number of votes for the Wii does not mean it's necessarily behind in demand. I think that it shows that the Wii is generally considered a secondary or complimentary game system by most older gamers. I have a PS3, but I plan on getting a Wii perhaps in the holiday season of 2007 as more games become available and old games get reduced pricing.
