So, I'm playing FOF and watching the game. I'm doing a historic solo league, and just drafted - well me ! I had to do a little looking things up and found I even had a card. I didn't even know I played ! lol.
I've been saying since I found out that the wife is preg. (with a boy) that I was going to start rooting for another team (I just can't raise this boy to love the Lions, to much heartache !). I guess this gives me a reason .... Gooooo Saints ! (Although, "I" did play for the Lions too :()

Yea, that offensive pass interference was horrible. From 2nd and 2 to 1st and 20
How do you call that non existent call in a championship game? All the breaks, referee influenced or otherwise, have gone the Bears in this game thus far. Hopefully the Saints can weather it all to put themselves in a position to battle back.
Eaglesfan27
01-21-2007, 03:11 PM
Agreed that the offensive interference call was horrible. One of my friends is convinced that the NFL is fixed and they want the Saints in the Super Bowl. Of course, I think that is a terrible theory. I called him (he had to help watch the kids and couldn't come over) and he said "Well the NFL just wants to make it look good early. The Saints will get the calls late."
Anyway, at least the defense is holding strong and keeping the team in the game.

01-21-2007, 03:21 PM
The Saints are playing like they are absolutely gassed on defense. Of course, their offense isn't helping and neither is the Benson and Jones show. I think a 16-0 halftime lead will cover anything the Saints offense can do today. So I think this is it right here.

Pumpy Tudors

Now that it's 16-0, I think the Saints really need to get something on the board before halftime. Even if it's a field goal, I think it's necessary to loosen these guys up going into the second half. They need to go into the locker room believing that they can move the football and get points on the board.

2nd half will be interesting. Payton is one of the better coaches of making 2nd half adjustments to his gameplan. Also, one or two of these breaks have to go the Saints way. However, none of that will matter much if the Bear's keep running the way they do. That Saints's D-line looked bad in the first half.

With the way the Saints defense has been playing, this safety isn't really a terrible thing. Obviously, you don't want to give away two points, and you don't want to give up possession, but that's not the worst thing that could've happened to the Saints right there.

I wonder if that would be called a safety like holding in the endzone is
Brillig
01-21-2007, 04:25 PM
That'd be illegal touching of a forward pass. Half the distance to the goal, replay the down.
Hah, me wrong. A quick google came up with this from Jerry Markbreit (former NFL ref)
If a quarterback attempts a forward pass from his end zone and the pass is illegally touched by an offensive lineman, why is a safety not called? This seems to a form of intentional grounding in that there was no expectation of completing the pass. --Mike Larrabee, Woodbridge, Va.
The penalty for illegal touching of a forward pass by an ineligible offensive player is five yards from the previous line of scrimmage and a replay of the down. The defense may also decline the penalty, which would then result in an incomplete pass and the next down would prevail. Intentional grounding in the end zone would be a safety, but illegal touching is not enough for a grounding call. The quarterback under pressure, who deliberately throws the ball into the back of an ineligible offensive player, would incur an intentional grounding call.
Dutch
01-21-2007, 04:28 PM
The referee can always determine that you were throwing it at the center to intentionally ground the ball. It's a judgement call and would still be a safety.
Mustang
01-21-2007, 04:28 PM
Could probably still be a safety depending on the refs ruling on the field.
Per NFL rules.. "2. Intentional grounding will be called when a passer, facing an imminent loss of yardage due to pressure from the defense, throws a forward pass without a realistic chance of completion."
Throwing it into an OL has no chance of completion.

Yeah, this was no Seattle/Pittsburgh game where the better team was basically shut down by the ref's. The ref's weren't great, but I want to see a little bit out of the Saints before I pull the ref card out of my pocket. Outside of a little flurry of activity, the Saints weren't really into this game, or weren't let into it (edit: by the Bears, that is), one or the other.
