My apologies for the formatting. I thought it was well formatted when I sent it to Barkeep, but I must have messed something up.

I think it's different but not poor, otherwise I'd have fixed it :).

Good stuff, I'm liking this FTB think more and more, it helps a lot to know the humans behind the nicks.

Btw, good job on taking this open about the horrible thing that happened to your mother, not everybody would talk about it in an open forum the way you did.

There, I studied discreet mathematics and met a guy who became a good friend (who I still chat with today) who told me about a relatively new program at USC. USC wanted to improve their academic numbers, so they were accepting 50 students across the nation in their "Resident Honors Program." The program included being named a "Trustee Scholar" if accepted which included a great deal of perks.

Ok.. this is eerie... what year was this? I was VERY VERY VERY close to going into this program... they recruited me pretty heavily (i never actually made a trip out there) but in the end decided I didn't want to live in downtown LA or be across the country from my family...

I’m not sure what most experts think about this issue, but here are my thoughts: I don’t think there is anything wrong with them in moderation. I believe there are two different things going on with ADHD/ADD. Some kids are “truly” ADHD and have a biochemical abnormality which can be corrected with medication, and I do not believe that abnormality is caused by any video or most other external factors. Other kids (perhaps the majority) suffer from having parents who aren’t willing to do all that it takes to be a good parent. They aren’t willing to spend time with the kids (even young kids who can’t communicate their thoughts need quality time with their parents), they aren’t willing to set firm and consistent boundaries. They aren’t willing to take the time to recognize positive behaviors and verbally reward them. They just want quick fixes because they are tired from work or whatever other demands they face day to day.

My fiance is a Kindergarten teacher so this is something she deals with daily. So, I read your response to her as it fits my opinion a lot. She wants to know if you would mind her copying this and sending it to her coworkers (not naming you of course)...

Nice work. Sorry I didn't ask a question, I couldn't think of one that was not already asked in some way.

However, ultimately, I’m fairly certain that I’m not nearly talented enough to cure him in any timely manner so I would probably prescribe a lobotomy.

Remind me to only bring up simple problems if you are ever my real-life doctor...

I accepted late in 91 maybe early 92. I started in the program in August or September of 92. I was at USC from 92 to 96. I don't mind at all if she sends that response or part of that response to her coworkers.

Also, no need to apologize Bucc. Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I was nervous about how this was going to be received. Also, I apologize for several mistakes slipping through. I took a long time to type this and tried to proofread it on 4 different occasions, but I'm surprised how many errors I see now that I didn't see before (i.e. I certainly don't wish my mom was a man ;))

If I would have done it I would have started there in 95 I guess? I graduated HS in 97... interesting to me because I always thinka bout how differently life would have been if I would have followed through with it, so strange to hear someone that actually did it..

Huh, I also thought pretty hard about the USC program.

Really good read, thanks for the time/effort in answering those questions.

Wow! Thanks for opening up since it does help to put a perspective on one's own life. To see how far you have come made for a very good read. In my mind, it felt like I was skipping through different chapters of the Eaglesfan27 DVD. It is amazing to see what experiences in your life molded you.

We would have been classmates and dorm mates (because they made all of us stay in the same dorm the 1st year.) I made some good friends from that group. Some of whom, I still keep in touch with to this day. I officially graduated HS in 93 too, after I had already finished my freshman year at USC. I had to take a volleyball class to count for gym and an english class to meet NJ's requirements to graduate.

I had much the same thought. For all the crap that gets thrown around all over the board, all of the FTB participants have been very open and honest, and all the viewers have been very respectful. This goes a long way toward changing anonymous pseudonyms into real people.

Don't get too excited yet. I'm sure that I'll bring FTB down a few dozen notches once I'm done with it. :)

Thanks for answering my question Eaglesfan27. That was a very interesting read. I think it's very admirable that you refused to conduct those experiments on a dog and I think it sucks that they made you watch a video of it anyway.

okay, just got done reading the whole thing. Thanks for being so open, many moving moments in that writeup.

I'd also wanna say that this feature is quite amazing regarding how much honesty and respect the people who ask the questions and those who answered them so far have displayed. FOFC really is a one of a kind type of online community... :)

My grandmother was a staunch animal rights activist. She helped rescue and place strays. She instilled in me a deep love for almost all animals and it was a really easy decision as a result. I hated watching the video, but at the time it seemed like the most reasonable compromise that I (and my classmates) were able to work out.

Thanks to you and everyone else for the kind words. I agree with your last sentence. I have never found an online community like this one before, nor do I expect to find any others like it in the future.

Hey EF, any chance we can see a pic of your wife's fat sculptures?

Seriously.

My wife is adamantly opposed to me ever posting any pictures of her on here even though I've wanted to do so on a few occasions. However, she is extremely proud of her sculptures and I'm almost certain that she will allow me to post a few pics of a recent one that won her a silver medal in a state wide competition. I'll ask when I get home tonight. Most likely, I'll post pics tonight.

If EF27 posts a picture of his wife's fat sculpture, I'll post a picture of my fat sculpture. Let me warn you, though, that my sculpture doesn't involve any fat, and it's not really a sculpture.

This is a sculpture that won a silver medal in a statewide competition in the tallow category a few months ago. She put over 100 hours into it and it consists entirely of animal fat (tallow) with the exception of 3 thin metal rods that are allowed to help maintain the shape. It (along with the display platter under it) weighs over 50 pounds and I helped her carry it to the competition. The competitors aren't allowed to use any paints and all coloring of the sculpture was done via food coloring. The coloring of the base (which is also Tallow) was done via embedding various herbs in it. The biggest criticism that she got was that it was too symmetrical. It is now in a large display dome in our den:
