Trent Dilfer

Matt Schaub

Jon Kitna

Jeff Garcia

Drew Bledsoe

Jake Plummer

Aaron Brooks

Mark Brunell

Jake Delhomme

Rex Grossman

Brian Griese

Jamarcus Russell

Brady Quinn

Troy Smith

Chris Leak

Who will be the opening day starting QB for each of these teams?

Miami Dolphins

The responses regarding Trent Dilfer are surprising. All indications are the 49ers love him and consider him the perfect backup and mentor. I would say it is a lock he returns in that role. Has he indicated he might consider retiring?

Trent Dilfer - Backup for the San Francisco 49er's
---Might be wishful thinking, but I think he didn't mind being on the West Coast, near his home, and being a clipboard holder. He's much like Jeff Garcia in that I think he's found his niche and will serve as backup/mentor to Alex Smith for one more season.

Matt Schaub - Backup for the Atlanta Falcon's
---Me thinks that although Vick got the "vote of confidence", Schuab isn't going anywhere where Petrino is unsure about Vick beyond this year. Add in the fact that it is a decently deep QB class, and there is no reason to give up a first or second round draft pick for him (which is what Atlanta wants)

Jon Kitna - Starter for the Detroit Lion's
---I fully expect the Lions to cut ties with with the former Cardinals' QB (name slips my mind) and draft a young QB in the first three rounds of the draft. Thus, they will keep Kitna as the starter for this season to mentor the young QB similar to what the Bengals did with Palmer.

Jeff Garcia - Starter for the Minnesota Vikings
---It's either being a starter for the Vikings or back-up for the Eagles. As it is, I think the Vikings are the only starting job that Garcia will consider as it is a familiar system with an offensive minded head coach who will put his skills to good use and is indoors. Also, the Vikings are closer to being a contender than people realize. Next year, they could surprise in the NFC Central (especially if they get Garcia)

Drew Bledsoe - Retired
---The Cowboy's are going to cut him, and he is neither the kind of QB to mentor a young QB nor sit on the bench. The only possibility might be he goes to the Raiders (don't laugh, Davis loves strong armed QB's and Bledsoe would have one of his few chances to start) or as a back-up in Seattle to Matt Hasselbeck (Wallace looked horrid as a back-up QB, although this would be a poor matchup with Holmgren)

Jake Plummer - Starter for the Houston Texans
---I think Shanahan might do his old starter and old offensive coordinator a favor and offer Plummer to the Texans for a 6th or 7th rounder. Kubiak got the most out of Plummer, and this would be a good fit until Houston gets its "real" QB of the future.

Aaron Brooks - Backup for the Seattle Seahawks
---Brooks returns to his old mentor Mike Holmgren from their Packer days. The Seahawks need a backup for previously stated reasons, and Brooks fits pretty well within Holmgren's system. Its a shot in the dark, but it does make sense.

Mark Brunell - Backup for the Washington Redskins
---I don't think Gibbs will cut him as he wants to keep Brunell as an insurance policy. I don't see Brunell catching anywhere else if he is cut (maybe Houston?)

Jake Delhomme - Starter for the Carolina Panthers
---Carolina's going to give the former Super Bowl starting QB one more year to try and regain his old form. However, he will be on a short leash.

Rex Grossman - Starter for the Chicago Bears
---See Jake Delhomme. Also, I don't see the Bears getting another quarterback to compete with Grossman, Griese, and Orton.

Brian Griese - Backup for the Chicago Bears
---See above.

Jamarcus Russell - Starter for the Oakland Raiders
---This might be the one I'm most surest about. I think there is little question the Raiders will take him to probably be the day one starter for the worst team in the league.

Brady Quinn - Starter for Cleveland Browns
---Quinn filters through the Belichek coaching line from Weis to Crennel. The Lions may consider him, but I think Millen is very skittish about drafting a QB so high after the Harrington fiasco.

Troy Smith - Backup for the Detroit Lions
---However, Millen can't help himself with the 34th overall pick and selects Smith to be the QB of the future.

Chris Leak - FA/Retired
---Leak will get drafted by a team, but I don't think he has the arm to succeed at the next level. He may make it as a Ken Dorsey type back-up, but its going to be tough for him.

Who will be the opening day starting QB for each of these teams?

Miami Dolphins - Daunte Culpepper
---Culpepper has a strong training camp and will be given every shot as the starter in Cameron's offense.

Oakland Raiders - LaMarcus Russell
---See above.

Cleveland Browns - Charlie Frye
---Frye keeps the seat warm for Quinn who will start likely at midpoint during the season (when Crennel's job is effectively on the line)

Washington Redskins - Jason Campbell
---He showed some signs during what was essentially his rookie season. I think he goes in as the starter and likely remains until he succeeds or flops in 2007.

Detroit Lions - Jon Kitna
---See above

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - QB Chris Simms
---The old adage is you don't lose your job due to injury. I think Simms will have much to prove and he is an underrated QB. However, it is a possibility that Gradkowski could beat him out in training camp.

Chicago Bears - Rex Grossman
---See above

Minnesota Vikings - Jeff Garcia
---See above

One big name not on the list is Byron Leftwich. I get the feeling he may end up in Baltimore, because Ozzie Newsome was very close to trading up for him in 2003 before the Vikings pulled their "draft day maneuver".

The Washington QB situation will stay as is, Campbell starts, Brunell backs up, and will retire at the end of this season. The Skins will spend their money on OL and some DB's, not another QB

uneventful off-season and Daniel Snyder are two things that are never mentioned in the same sentence. I say the over/under is about 3 1/2 for the amount of players over the age of 32 he brings in that they overpay for.

I think the people who think Garcia will go to the Bear's is flatly wrong because: a) The Bears will not be willing to pay Garcia what he would want to leave a nice situation with the Eagles; b) the Bear's are a "downfield" passing game, which is not fit to Garcia's strengths. Garcia's been through that before with Cleveland (windy city = makes arm weaknesses glaring)

Admittedly I don't know a lot about the Bears, but with that defense and that running game, wouldn't they be better off with a less "downfield" passing game? Their receivers strike me more as the possession type than burners.

Very bad of the Vikings to make a deal and expect Newsome to keep his end.
(for the record, Newsome claims that when they tried to call the trade in, the phone was buisy.)

Actually, I heard it was Jacksonville keeping Minnesota tied up on the phone, preventing the VIkings from turning in the trade with Baltimore. Then Jacksonville ran right up and selected QB Leftwich knowing Baltimore was trying extremely hard to get him (I know for a fact they would have taken him over Terrell Suggs)

The Bears had a "possession-based" passing offense under Dick Jauron and John "1 yard swing" Shoop. Hopefully, they won't go back to that offense, and my TV will be protected from another remote control being thrown through it.

Bernard Berrian and Mark Bradley are very much downfield threats. Muhammed, not so much.

Only the Ravens inability to contact NFL senior director of player personnel Joel Bussert in New York -- the league official on hand that teams have to report their trades to -- kept Baltimore from completing the deal for Minnesota's pick.

What about Damon Huard? Is he gonna stay in KC? I really think this guy got a raw deal ever since Wannstedt idiotically chose Fiedler over him in 2000. Since then, the guy has bounced around but has always shown great potential when given the chance to play. He has an 11-3 record as a starter. When will someone give him a chance?
