British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has signed a deal to make "Borat 2," a sequel to the hit film about an intrepid Kazakh journalist's road trip across America, News Corp. Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch said on Thursday.
"He's signed up to do a sequel for us," Murdoch told reporters.
Cohen's mock documentary, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," has grossed $248 million at the box office worldwide and earned an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.
Cohen also won a Golden Globe for his performance in the movie, distributed by News Corp.-owned film studio 20th Century Fox.
Based on a character he created for his TV show, the film stars Cohen as a cluelessly offensive Central Asian TV journalist named Borat Sagdiyev who has a thick mustache, wild-eyed grin and boisterous catch phrases like "sexy time!"
Chronicling Borat's exploits on a cross-country U.S. road trip, the movie is driven by Cohen's improvised, unrehearsed encounters with ordinary people who become his unsuspecting comic foils.
Asked whether he had seen the movie, Murdoch said, "Sure, about three times. ... We laughed like hell. We went out to dinner and laughed all over again."

Can there be a surer thing in the movie business that this?
Honestly, how much shoud Cohen personally make for this movie? Maybe $50 million?

It could be the biggest POS ever and still be a success from the studio's standpoint. Only one real actor to pay, no team of writers to pay, very low production costs, and a HUGE built-in audience = an easy profit.

This only makes sense if Cohen likes piles and piles of money.

He won't be able to fool anyone this time though, so he'll need to rely on scripted comedy. Could still be funny, just not really the same.

Considering there is a certain percentage of the population who can't accurately identify the President, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that perhaps there are still a few people who won't see it coming.

I wonder if this is in addition to or a replacement for the planned Bruno movie.

I think that one is already in motion, so this would be in addition.
I really can't see that being very successful, unless the audience shows up "because it's Borat" (which is entirely possible).

Yep. Considering that there are still politicians who don't seem to understand what they're getting themselves into when appearing on the Colbert Report, I'm quite certain that Cohen will be able to find enough unsuspecting Americans to make another Borat.

Nobody has ever gone broke underestimating the intelligence of the Americans. Is that how it goes?

I think it is safe to guess most of these people went to see the first movie.
If they realized it wasn't a real documentary....

Maybe in the second movie he takes a cue from Mel Gibson and goes off to a foreign land and films the whole thing without subtitles.

Hell, to me there's no more classic example of American stupidity than the head of counterterrorism with the FBI not knowing if Osama bin Laden is a Sunni or a Shi'ite.
