I'm a big movie fan so i'll be watching as much as i can tonight, and i imagine a lot of others will be too.
I've seen all the major nominated films (yes, even The Devil Wears Prada), so here are my thoughts:
should win = my pick
will win = my actual prediction of what the academy will do
Best Picture
should win: The Departed
will win: The Departed
Best Director
should win: Scorcese
will win: Clint Eastwood
Best Original Screenplay
should win: Letters From Iwo Jima
will win: Letters From Iwo Jima
Best Adapted Screenplay
should win: The Departed
will win: The Departed
Best Actor
should win: Forest Whitaker*
will win: Forest Whitaker
* I would pick Leo for The Departed, but he was nominated for the wrong f'ing movie.
Best Actress
should win: Judi Dench
will win: Helen Mirren
Best Supporting Actor
should win: Djimon Honsou
will win: Eddie Murphy
Best Supporting Actress
should win: Cate Blanchett
will win: Jennifer Hudson

Hmm, they historically had opened with one of the supporting actor/tress categories (something the average joe would view as a "real" category)... interesting that they changed that up this time around.

I was thinking that. There sure was a lot of love for that movie and Hollywood loves to make itself feel like it's progressive. Though Jennifer Hudson winning for Best Supporting Actress will likely be the most predictable moment of the night.

Did anyone else think that Melissa Etheridge looked like Hillary Clinton... I mean I know they're both lesbians, but she could find a better looking lesbian to look like.
Gore has gotten huge.
And I hope LMS doesn't keep winning awards. Of all the quirky indie movies, it was easily the least intriguing of them.

I think that win more likely represents the "throwing an old actor a bone" syndrome that you see in the Oscars. They love to basically hand out a lifetime achievement award when they get the chance. That's why I think Scorcese actually has a strong chance in Director for a change... though something tells me Departed and Iwo Jima will spilt the 2 big categories.

I don't know why anyone cares about it running late. It's not like the superbowl where we can say "these games take just over 3 hours every week, why does this one take 5?"
It's a once-a-year event, it's not like we have movie awards every week leading up to it. It should be long as hell. It's the network's stupidity for simply not starting it earlier.

It's not the length that bothers me, it's the keeping to a schedule that bothers me. There is very little in these shows that is not schduled/scripted.. there's really no reason to run 30-60 minutes late.
It's more a "what a bunch of baffoons" thing for not being able to properly schedule an event than any concern with the actual lenght.

I think she's perpetually hurt by the fact that everybody knows she'll have plenty of opportunities down the road. True. It's starting to be ironic that Leo and Winslet were the stars of the biggest growing movie every but can't win an award. I think Winslet is superior to DiCaprio, but Leo's building a solid body of work.
I definitely respect Winslet's choices, even if she ends up in films that aren't blockbusters. You almost get the sense that if she knew Titanic would make $600, she might not not have done it.

Why was Best Picture presented by the guy who played Darth Vader without his mask at the end of Return of the Jedi?

WTF was with Diane Keaton?
I didn't watch her last night, but it is not unusual for Diane Keaton to act drunk/high/stoned/recentlyfucked.

So last night I Tivo'd the Oscars, and went to see The Number 23. Big disappointment. Regardless, as the credits are rolling this dude is like "the next movie I go to see better have some explosions!" I hate people that have no appreciation for film... anyway.
The worst part about this night is that the Academy Awards were taped 8-11. Naturally, it ran over.
So while I sat through best animated short film and best score, I missed Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Film. Had to log on to IMDb just to find out.

Scored under 10% at Rotten Tomatoes. I was surprised, I thought the previews looked really good. Any more specific thoughts about why it was bad?

It lost me at "2 divided by 3: .666, THE DEVIL!!."
No it's not, you fucks. If you're gonna shorten a number, you gotta round it. It's .667. You can't just arbitrarily pick where you're gonna complete the number. Why not ".66, the most historic highway in America!" or ".6666, the last 4 digits of the phone number of WFAN in New York!"
I have no idea why that bothers me so much.

It's the script and script alone. The acting is fine by all involved, it's just the plausibility of the main premise (specifically how quickly the supporting chracters go along with it), and the ultimate resolution. In the end it just feels silly.

Well, there are a few things. Small spoilers to follow, nothing that will give anything away however:
The movie is about the number 23. Which is fine, plenty of 23s. It's the point of the movie. But I just don't like when a movie finds a bunch of easy "outs" to make it's point. Like, the movie begins on February 3. 23. Oh it's 11:12 when Jim Carrey looks at the clock! Wow that adds to 23! Just stuff like that to me is annoying.
And I hated the last 20 minutes of the movie, and I won't say anything else until it has been out for a while.

Murphy "Storms Out" After Oscar Loss
http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/70/95/91/10s.jpg Dreamgirls (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443489/) star Eddie Murphy (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000552/) was so devastated after losing the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award to Alan Arkin (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000273/) he stormed out of the ceremony, according to press reports in the US, including Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com. Murphy was the favorite to win the Oscar, which instead was awarded to Little Miss Sunshine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0449059/) star Arkin. The 45-year-old tried to downplay his disappointment telling American publication Us Weekly, "It's fine. It happens. It's OK." But shortly thereafter, Murphy and girlfriend Tracey Edmonds (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1037794/) left the show and didn't return. Murphy missed out on his Dreamgirls cast mates Beyonce Knowles (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0461498/), Jennifer Hudson (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1617685/) and Anika Noni Rose (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0741242/) performing songs from the film, as well as Hudson's win for Best Supporting Actress.

Eddie, it's not about the awards, it's about the craft. And let's be honest, it's tough for one movie to get two supporting acting award wins. Very tough.

Plus, he's a lock to win next year for Norbit. No need to worry, Eddie.

Since this thread at one point turned into a Kate & Leo lovefest, I just saw today that they are doing a movie together for the first time since Titanic. It's Revolutionary Road.

I'm definitely going to see that one.
