I've been toying around using an empty beer bottle as a slide, and now I think I wanna buy a real one. Any recommendations on what slides are better than others? Steel, bronze, brass, ceramic, glass? Any sound differences on an acoustic? Or are they all pretty much the same?

And if anyone has any tips on playing slide, that would be much appreciated.

For acoustic, I would definitely go with glass--it gives you a much smoother, more resonant sound, which is pretty much what you want.

For electric, I still prefer glass, but that's because I like hollow-body and semi-hollow-body guitars--it's the resonant-thing again. If you play a solid body and you're looking for something more punchy or screechy, go with steel.

What KoNY said, i prefer glass ones for acoustic and steel for electric for extra edge, specially if you are into hard rock.

I don't play a lot of slide, but for glass I just use a shot glass. I have also used a battery.

I have small hands, so the professionally made slides are always a bit awkward for me to use.

I just picked up a cheap glass slide today. It only fits my pinky finger. I'm fine with that for now, but I think I'd have more control with my ring finger.

Let me just say that playing slide while smoking a cigarette makes you feel like a fucking badass.
