given a series of dates, is there a way in excel to make a date correspond to a given week?

for example:

1/1/7 -> 1/6/7 = week 1 (or 0)
1/7/7 -> 1/13/7 = week 2
1/14/7 -> 1/20/7 = week 3
etc
etc

thanks

way I do it is with a VLOOKUP looking into a small DB of all days in the year, but I need to do that in order to translate calendar days into working days with our work schedule...

yeah, i figured out how to translate the date into what day of the week... with a vlookup and a function in excel

=VLOOKUP(WEEKDAY(L2),dotw!$A$1:$B$7,2,0)

dotw is simply the translation of day number -> day name ..

wonder if there is a "week()" function..

hmmmmm.

dola,

WEEKNUM(serial_num,return_type)

Serial_num is a date within the week. For more information about how Microsoft Excel uses serial numbers for dates, see the Remarks section.

Return_type is a number that determines on what day the week begins. The default is 1.

Serial num Week Begins
1 Week begins on Sunday. Weekdays are numbered 1 through 7.
2 Week begins on Monday. Weekdays are numbered 1 through 7.

Remarks

Microsoft Excel stores dates as sequential serial numbers so that it can perform calculations on them. Excel stores January 1, 1900, as serial number 1 if your workbook uses the 1900 date system. If your workbook uses the 1904 date system, Excel stores January 1, 1904, as serial number 0 (January 2, 1904, is serial number 1). For example, in the 1900 date system, Excel stores January 1, 1998, as serial number 35796 because it is 35,795 days after January 1, 1900. Learn more about how Microsoft Excel stores dates and times.

Examples

If date is Sunday, January 10, 1999, then:

WEEKNUM("1/10/1999",1) equals 3

WEEKNUM("1/10/1999",2) equals 2

WEEKNUM("2005/08/31") equals 36

and voila:

=weeknum(b2,1) gives me what i want/need. :)

now, i wonder if there is an inverse or weeknum..

eg. invweeknum(week number, 1) = week of 1/2/7 or something like that.

This thread was actually extremely useful to me.. In Sweden we use Week-numbers extensively and I have a project where this simple little WEEKNUM function will give my statistics a real boost..

Thanks finketr and thanks FOFFF-CEE!!!

well, it sorta worked for me...

i have ~24 datapoints/day

unfortunately i get 1.1.1.2.2.2.22.2.3.3.3.3.3
instead of 7x24 1's, then 7x24 2's...

so i'm on the right track... will keep you all posted.

alright, so my original shot at this was essentially this formula:
=weeknum(DATEVALUE(G2 &"/"&H2&"/"& I2),1) where g2,h2,i2 are month/day/year .. well, that didn't work for me...

so i used a different list that has the date in "1/1/2007 12:00:00 AM" format and voila, it worked...

i'll have to work this out.

what I meant more is that I build a calendar on a separate sheet and use it in about every spreadsheet I do about my production schedules. It looks something like this:

workday is simply a sequential number that goes +1 everyday. That way I can find the equivalent workday to a calendar day, add some working days for a task and then find back the calendar based on the new workday...

This thread was actually extremely useful to me.. In Sweden we use Week-numbers extensively and I have a project where this simple little WEEKNUM function will give my statistics a real boost..

Thanks finketr and thanks FOFFF-CEE!!!

it figures we have the same use for week numbers, as we both work for the same parent company ;)

Oh yeah.. and they love their spreadsheets.. statistics here, targets there, charts there..

A buddy of mine and I discussed opening our own little spreadsheet drivethrough shop... imagine having a meeting and remembering this when you wake up in the morning.. oh gosh no, you haven't prepared anything!

Well.. Welcome to Chart r Us, we provide you with pointless graphs/charts/statistics, all in different colors. Slogan: "It's not as if anyone looks at the bloody numbers anyway"..

hmm.

now how to present network utilization statistics...

trying not to overstate the maximum while trying not to shortchange the fact that there is lots more utilization during the n. american daytime here...

i love pivot charts
