Does anyone have one of these? They seem to run at least $100 cheaper than most brands. A friend of mine says it is performing just as good as any other laptop he's ever had. I'm curious what other's might think. I can't find a lot of reviews, etc. on their newer computers.

I've been very happy with the one I've had for almost a year. No issues whatsoever with performance or durability.

I've had one for the past 3 years.. excellent.. previously I've had Dells and Compaqs and they've lasted shorter than this one... They're not as good with desktops though, but for laptops, nothing but good comments from me.

I have an Acer desktop from 1997 that still runs, so yeah I have to say that I like the brand.

I bought one as a Christmas gift for my wife - so far no problems with it.

I'm debating between it and a Toshiba...really the only difference seems to be Intel versus AMD...is that a big difference? Something to be concerned with?

Just a different opinion, but I still have problems trusting Acers. We had them with a company I worked with 7 years ago and I sent back a number of them. Just didn't seem like quality machines.

However, I do have a friend who has one and likes it. I tried HP after hearing bad reports and am happy with this machine. Maybe Acer has improved as well. *shrug*

This is the one I ended up going with:

It seems like a steal but I'm hoping I'm right.

Acer is insanely popular in Europe, they sell a ton of laptops over there. They just haven't been able to do as well getting market acceptance in the US.

I bought an Acer laptop which was mostly fine, but did have an issue with occasionally not starting right, withthe display being horribly f'd up. But by waiting, using the windows key and shutting down using keys, restarting, it was usually OK.

I would have taken it back, but I bought in it Thailand, so it was dirty cheap, and taking it back would have been less than cost effective...

I've never had a laptop, but I had great luck with my Acer desktop. I bought one going into college in '95 and it lasted me throughout college and grad school (through '00). I actually looked to buy another one a few years back - I had purchased a Dell after college, and that turned out to be not-so-great, so when I was looking to ditch that Dell, I considered another Acer, but couldn't find one in-store anywhere anymore.

I've sold a few Acer laptops to customers over the last few years and the customers have been very happy with them.

My step dad is looking for a cost effective laptop and I noticed a couple at Costco...hmmm...with all the endorsments here I just may have a closer look at them.

I have had 3 Acers. The first was a desktop (sometime in the 90s) and it was bad.

The second was a laptop and it was .. ok but it would tend to overheat and make loud noises.

The third was one I bought for my fiancee and it's a POS. The worst thing is that the built-in modem just doesn't work right, despite having sent it back once to check.

I wouldn't buy an Acer ever honestly but that's coz of my bad experiences.

I've had my acer laptop for about 2 1/2 years now or so. Haven't had a single issue with it that wasn't caused by me getting crumbs under the keyboard, fucking with the space key to get them out and them having a space key that you have to press harder than normal to get it to recognize the key press.

Good lord, just spend $10 fucking bucks on a cheap-ass PCI modem, unscrew the tower, pop it in, and move on. It's like legos.

Anyway, I "build" my own desktops when I need a new one (and I am certainly not a computer genius), and I have always used an Acer motherboard when possible. The only time I had a problem was when I have the motherboard fan sieze up a month ago because I had been lazy about using canned air. That board was 2 years old.

Anyway, I think Acer is a quality product line.

Wait, was the modem in a laptop? If so, just ignore what I directed at you in the above post.

Good grief, why would you keep buying the product? If the first one was bad for you, why not stop there and switch to another brand?

Well .. the first was a desktop. The second was a laptop at a heavily discounted student price a few years later. So my thinking was that maybe Acer had gotten better plus it was cheap.

Because the second was kinda acceptable in terms of performance, I bought a new laptop for the fiancee as a gift, not knowing it would turn out badly :(
