Ok, I live in TX and it's hot. I just moved into a new apt last weekend and there's no ceiling fan in the living room. When I approached the complex about the chances of them putting one in, they told me that they could if I pay for the electrical, etc. Anyway, it's going to be around $150-$175.

My lease, as it stands right now, is for 8 months and there is a chance that I could extend it for another 8-14 months after that. My question is how much could I save each month, especially from May-Sept, with having a ceiling fan running along with central air as opposed to just central air?

If I just stay for 8 months, I can't see it saving me over $20 each month to make up for the costs. But if I stayed for another year, would it be worth it?

I know nothing about this, but I would imagine roughly $0. The ceiling fan doesn't actually create any coolness, only a wind which makes it feel cooler. So having said that, maybe a little if you set the AC to 72 degrees without the fan, and can feel comfortable at, say, 73 degrees with the fan. But I don't think it's going to actually make the place any colder. But again, this is all coming from no knowledge on the subject. :)

My uninformed opinion is that fans are more for circulating the air that's in the house as opposed to cooling the air itself. So, about all it might do for you is recirculate some of the cool air that comes from your air conditioner, but if that saves more than a few pennies in AC a week, I'd be surprised. Then again I know nothing about the subject, so I'm up for some learnin.'

Ha! I didn't even see that anyone had replied. Hey, two uninformed opinions are better than one!

I also don't believe it will save you any money, unless you run the ceiling fan and leave the air off.

I am a very big fan of ceilings. They seperate floors and help keep my dry when it rains. Definite thumbs up from me.

I couldn't live without my ceiling fan. I know we saved a ton last month when the had the windows open and the fans on without any AC, but I'm not sure how much you can save with both going...

I have been a fan of ceilings since before you were born. Get off my bandwagon.

Why the hatred of floors in this thread?

And I agree with Jeeber...you're not going to save any money unless there's a bunch of days where you can be comfortable with just windows/no AC or if it gets cool enough at night where you're okay sleeping without the AC and the fan going.

Personally, any bit of warmth when I'm trying to sleep is damn near deadly.

Floors don't have the upside that ceilings do.

A floor fan seems like it might be a little dangerous.

I'm a fan of ceiling fans on the floor. I use mine to clip my toenails and keep the kids in line.
