I didn't see one for the Masters yet. Sabbatini just rolled in a long, long putt for eagle to take the lead on the 8th and gave a stroke right back the next hole. Meanwhile, Tiger is about to fall two shots behind Goosen, who has put together 27 great holes of golf so far this weekend.

Good looking leaderboard heading into the back nine, unless you are a Mickelson backer.

I love the limited commercials at the Masters thing, but can somebody let these guys know that we need to come on the air when the lead pair hits the first tee (if not sooner)?

I think +3 will get it done here, +4 might even do it. As such, there's probably 13 guys right now with a shot at it. Obviously Tiger is still probably the favorite....I like Toms as a longshot.

And Tiger is now four off the lead after missing a short putt on the 10th. Starting to look grim for him - no birdies since the 2nd hole.

Tiger doesn't have that killer instinct that he usually has on Sundays of a Major. It will be curious to see if someone comes in early at +4 or +3, what that will do to the leaders.

Dr. Sak
04-08-2007, 03:51 PM
Plus Tiger is only 3 back and 13 looks like to could potentially be an eagle hole. He is not out of this just yet...

hoopsguy
04-08-2007, 03:51 PM
Upon further review, I suck at math. Tiger is just three back. Still not playing very well by his ridiculously high standards but he is not four back as I stated in last post.

Dr. Sak
04-08-2007, 03:52 PM
I've never seen that happen before in a tourney...

I guess Kelly is the best bet to do it early, at least hang 4 over. I'd be suprised if he breaks par on the last three, not even sure if he should gamble much.

Retief or Sabbatini can hang 3 over, possibly better, two to three holes ahead of Tiger and Apples.

Tiger needs to pick up his game. That misread on the 5 footer was shocking. Lucky for him, the course is playing so difficult that nobody is going to be able to run away with this.

Where the hell did Goosen and Sabbatini come from? They are way outplaying the field today.

Dr. Sak
04-08-2007, 03:56 PM
Goosen barely made the cut..he finished right on the cut number on Friday. I believe the announcers said that he saved bogey on 18 to make the cut.

Dr. Sak
04-08-2007, 03:57 PM
Sabbatini made one hell of a winding putt on one of the initial holes (eagle maybe?). I'm sure they will show it on replay again.

And Appleby is wet. It feels like this tournament can be had by whoever among the leaders goes out and shoots under par from 14-18.

You wonder if it's even gonna take that. I'm sure Johnson would take parring in. He'd win if he pars in I think.

Dr. Sak

I think +2 wins outright where as +3 will be a playoff.

I don't think it would be a good thing for golf if Tiger wins when he is playing so poorly.

If somebody can step up and beat him today, the players may start to believe that Tiger is not invincible in the majors.

Dr. Sak
04-08-2007, 04:30 PM
Anyone but Tiger...

He looks like he is back on his game now. This is going to be interesting.

hoopsguy
04-08-2007, 04:32 PM
I don't worry much about the "players" collectively - it is up for each of them individually to figure out how to compete with Woods. That said, I would love to see Johnson play well down the stretch and if Woods plays well enough to overtake him that is great too. I just don't want to see everyone else melt at the end except Tiger - that is a script we get to see far too often.

Leonidas
04-08-2007, 04:35 PM
I'm screwed. The wife asked me to come downstairs and be sociable. I can only hold out so long as a man, and the promise of certain favors this evening rules against my instinctual tendencies. Damn that penis!

Yep. I have nothing against Tiger Woods at all, I just don't want every major to be a forgone conclusion when he is in the final group.

Yeah...don't think it will get it done with Johnson playing so well and Tiger surging as well, but it was a nice plan :)

hoopsguy
04-08-2007, 04:52 PM
Sabbatini is now the clubhouse leader at +3. If he wants to win his options right now look limited to rooting for water, a bad scorecard, or some Lefty course management on 18 by Johnson.

So, anyone know what the odds would have been for Johnson at the start of the week?

Ehh...he makes par and he can still get to +2 or +1....it would take some sick golf but it's not impossible.

I feel bad wishing ill on someone, but I'd love it if Johnson drops a few in the final few holes and we have a monster 4-way or so playoff.

Dr. Sak
04-08-2007, 04:55 PM
Gotta give it to Tiger though...he went for the win.

If he somehow pulls out par though he can still get to +1. 18 is no easy par for Johnson.

Dr. Sak
04-08-2007, 04:58 PM
I should've said 17 is no gimmie par for Johnson

I'd say +2 is in play now with the three putt. With Rose in the mix also, I think playoff is very possible.

18 has to be the coolest/toughest driving holes in golf. The patrons lined up down the tee box and the trees lining the first 150 yards looks so awesome.

hoopsguy
04-08-2007, 05:03 PM
Man, Goosen has just had a ton of birdie putts miss by 1-2 feet today. Not gimmes, but if one or two of them fall it would have been a different feel heading down the stretch.

Goosen is one guy that has the same demeanor whether in last or first place.

This will be one tough shot for Johnson for an up and down par. If he does par, one would think the worst he would be in for is a playoff.

I agree. Tiger will probably end up being the greatest golfer when he is done with his career but I grew up idolizing Jack Nicklaus and I really don't want him breaking his records. My first recollection of The Masters was his victory in '86. I think I was 7 years old at the time. I begged my parents all summer to get me a junior set of clubs.

I think records are meant to be broken and it's probably all but certain barring major injury that Tiger will break them, given that he too grew up idolizing Jack and putting his records as the thing he wants to do.

I think his hunger and desire to win is great for the game and has propelled it to a place on the stage that in this era, the sport would have probably struggled to reach without a transcendent face of the game to carry it into the 21st century.

But it's also fun to root for underdogs and see people step up their game to challenge.

Story about Zach Johnson from the Times. It's a cool story in the sense that he's finally made it onto golf's big stage. Went to the same high school as Kurt Warner.

Boy have they ever screwed up Augusta National. There were things they could do to make it tougher rather than lengthening the course all over the place. Let's hope this year was just due to the weather but this year looked alot like a US Open instead of the Masters and it was shitty to watch.

Thomkal
04-09-2007, 10:32 AM
This is the first year the weather has been like this since they started the course changes. I liked the results because I thought the course had become too easy. It was really hard to make a move though. Sunday's round is probably how I'd like to see it work most Masters. A few more, but not a lot of Eagles made and more chances for birdie.
