New Civ IV PitBoss Game - ***GAME RESTARTED 4/21*** 10 Players

I will be taking over the hosting for the Civ IV PitBoss game that WVUFan was running.

I am looking for new players. So, we're going to start this over. If you are interested, please reply to the thread that you are. Let me know if you prefer Vanilla or Warlords. I am fine playing either.

I would like to get between 8-12 players if possible.

Pitboss stands for Persistant Turn Based Server --> PTBS, or Pitboss.

It's all of what is nice about Play-By-Email without the headaches. Spleen (the "Pitboss") has a small program running continously on his system that maintains an active game at all times, and sets a time limit(usually 24 hours) that everyone has to take their turns. Most PTBS games are set to "simultaneous turns", ie you don't have to take them in order. This is a big negative for PBEM games, since 1 single person can in essense destroy a game when they don't take their turn. In PTBS games, if you don't take your turn in the Time Limit, you get skipped. Any queued moves happen, but the game moves to the next turn.

This way, every player is guaranteed a turn every 24 hours (or however long the Timer is set to).

The players need nothing special other than a legal game of Civ4 on their system. Spleen handles most other things. The game is passworded, and each Civ is passworded (and the PTBS does not have access to the civ passwords, so he can play without bias).

I'm running two Pitboss games on my system (Spleen's in one of them), and they're a great way to play multiplayer CivIV. If you haven't tried it, especially if you have limited time for gaming, this is for you.

And let's not mentioned the fantastic CivStats website, that lets you get up-to-date info on your Pitboss game at any time. Here's an example of the game I'm running that Spleen is in:

1. Start the game and select Multiplayer...Direct IP Connection
2. On this screen, enter the IP address and password. You should get connected to the game.
3. The first time in, you have to claim a civ. When you do it will ask you to enter a password for that civ.

There are 10 spots in the game. Bonegavel, I counted you as 1 of the 10 just in case. If you can't play, let me know and I will find someone for the spot.

Yes. Did you hit enter after you made your moves?

Log back in and hit enter. Make sure you always hit enter when you are done with your turn.

The message at the bottom will change to 'Waiting for other civilizations...' or something to that effect.

oh, I guess this makes sense. Probably better having the cpu make decisions than simply having four blank turns, especially this early when there's absolutely nothing in any queue.

thanks, this would be really nice of you. This has been a crappy run of a few days. First google ran some maintenance on my gmail account for three days, starting Saturday afternoon. At the same time, my youngest turned his cold into an ear infection, eventually rupturing an ear drum in the night from Saturday to Sunday, leading us to a couple of hours at the clinic on Sunday morning. Thanks God he's much better now but still. Then the frigging weather's been so bad with crazy winds and sleet and snow, leading to the TV and internet problems yesterday. Winds kept blowing like crazy last night and while I usually am not bothered by the wind, I slept really badly last night, probably fearing the drive to work this morning. I mean, seeing three tractor trailers and their vans bent sideways will do that to your psyche. Fears were sorta right as the commute to work was pure crap this morning. Visibility was nil for long stretch with snow and ice accumulations on the road. Damn, it's April 17 for crying out loud...

Oh well, thanks for reading. Rant over... :)

In another game I am in, it seems that I can't connect to the game when someone else is connected on the first try. After that, I can.

This is only a problem if someone else is in the game. If you encounter this again, just wait a few mnutes for the person to get out of the game.

I have. All you need is a stable, hardwired connection. I'm running on on CivFanatics that's nearly AD, and it's been disconnected one time.

I don't know why it is not working. My ip is the still the same. The ip my router assigned me is still the same, so all ports are open. I've rebooted.

One thing I have noticed is that when the game asks me for the admin password at startup, I can put in whatever I want and the game will still start. I don't know what that means.

I don't have time to fight this thing this morning. I have to head to work, so I will tackle it later tonight. Sorry for the delay guys, but I don't know why there is a problem.

I am completely baffled.

The game was up fine last night. I was surfing doing my usual for the evening and it just crashed. Now it won't allow any connections. I have reinstalled PitBoss and Civ with no luck. My ip address hasn't changed and I have all of the ports open in the router. I have no other firewalls in the way.

If I get it to work, we're going to have to start over anyway.

All of the saves I had were in the Autosave directory. When I started a new game to see if that was the problem, all of them were over deleted, so I don't have a save to load for our game.

That last 24 hours have been a downer. :D

I just got Civ, it's awesome. I won my first three MP games though, which just goes to show you the level of competition. Anyone interested in playing? Pitboss, direct IP...whatever?

I'll play any civ 4 game that's started but having started three so far all I want (in a kingdom for a horse type fashion) is a bloody stable game that won't die after 6 weeks (aaargh)

If someone can provide that, I think you'll have no problem getting players.

Same here. I think my experience is identical to Yossarians. Except only the first lasted even close to six weeks, the others seem to have bailed after one.

What made them fail? The loss of the pitboss server? Is it that hard to keep running?

With the game I ran, it was up and running without an issue. I don't remember how long, but it crashed. After the crash, I could no longer get connected to any game that I try to host.

TO this day, I can't get connected to a game that I host.

I've played small-scale pitboss games (myself and my wife) and had no trouble. I've never played even out of the first age in a 1-turn-per-day game.

What are the setting for a game like this? How big of a map? Quick speed?

Do you all get together to play the first couple of turns, or is it a month before you get your second city?

The way the first game went, it was max 24 hrs for a turn, with things turning over earlier if every player ended their turn. So it would have been a month to the second city, at least.
