Alright, more problems.
I run a battle tutorial and everything goes great. The game looks so fun.
So I am going to start a campaign. I go to start and the screen starts flickering while the campaign is loading.
I get the same menu up and click on return game and the same menu comes back up.
Just updated my video card and I have 512 MB of RAM and 2.0 gHz. Do I have to put my code in anywhere?

What video card are you using?

NVIDA RIVA TNT2 Model64.

That is an old video card and when it first came out was DirectX 6.x compatible. You need a card that's DirectX 8.1 compatible for MTW. The newest driver for that card may bring it up to more cuurent standards, you'd have to check. In any case, that's an old card and you should probably update. With a 2 GHz machine it's silly to still be using that card if you are a gamer. You can get a very nice upgrade for not a lot of money (there have been several recent posts on this). I'd say your best bet to solve this problem would be to upgrade the card.

Just checked the nvidia site and the latest drivers should provide DirectX 8.1 support for that card. May be the card just doesn't have enough power for the game. I'd still say invest in a new one.

I have DirectX 9.
I dont have any problems running Tournament Dreams, which requires DirectX 8.1.

Well, let me put it this way, I had a much better video card than that and had to upgrade because I finally encountered games I could no longer run. Some games just require more graphics power than others. Like I said, I'm sure upgrading the card would make your entire gaming experience much better. Even a GeForce2 with 64 MEG would be a huge improvement (although that's not what I would recommend).

I agree, but unfortantely, I don't have the funding right now.
I hope there is a more simple solution.

If you want to enjoy MTW, you're going to have to get a new video card. That may not be what you want to hear, but its true. Even if you can get MTW working with your current card, its going to run like a dog.....a really fat dog......on really hot day.....in mud....10 feet deep. You get the idea.

How much does a quality video card run for now-a-days?
Tarkus
02-24-2003, 09:55 PM
GeForce2 32 MB - $35
GeFrorce2 64 MB - $45
GeForce4 Ti 4200 64 MB - $108
There are of course others inbetween, but this would be the low end and then the price point on GeForce4 cards. I have played MTW with the GeForce2 32 MB and it works, but for other games I'd spend the extra $10 on a 64 MB card. If you can afford it at all the Ti 4200 is a great card that won't break the bank. You can check out all the prices on http://www.pricewatch.com/

The thing that is frustrating is I can run the battle thing fine.
Should I downgrade to DirectX 8.1?

Don't think that would solve the problem. Even if the card is not the problem you still need a more modern one for newer games.

Just for kicks, try setting your video resolution to 800x600x32 before launching the game -- this is, I think, the default resolution for it. Games sometimes have problems swtiching video resolutions. In any case, I agree that you will soon need a newer video card to play current games. Hope this helps, though.
If you decide on a new card, here is a link that might help you determine the relative speeds of the various cards (the TNT2 isn't in the comparison because it is so old). There is a lot of tech info on this site that may or may not make sense to you, but just scroll down to the benchmark section to see a speed comparison -- 3d mark 2001 SE is a good overall benchmark.

Ok, MTW supports TNT video cards.
Minimum requirments are a 16 MB video card, I have a 32 MB.
I can run the battles fine.
But I can't start a campaign. Something is wrong, and it doesnt involve video cards.

Ok, I did some research over on the MTW boards and came up with this:
First of all, I have a crappy monitor and I really dont have the funding to buy a new one. Ill be lucky if I can squeeze a new video card in, until the summer.
My Screen resolution is set at 1024 x 768 - 32 bit mode.
There is something about a refresh rate. Mine is set at the lowest possible 60 Hz for that setting. I tried setting at 85 Hz but that didnt work.
People can run the game with a Voodoo3 but not with the latest GeForce. Apparently, when you start a new campaign large images have to load an this is my problem.
If any computer expert can help me out, please let me know.

I can help. Get a new video card.

P.S. If you're afraid that won't solve the problem, just borrow one from a friend or bring it to a shop that will let you try one (most of them will have an open one lying around somewhere. That will tell you for sure if it's going to solve your problem.

Well, I plan on getting a new one soon, but its frustrating not being able to play a game that I finally bought. It says right there on the box it supports TNT2 video cards. That is the frustrating part.

More of a rant. Alot of people in the MTW forms are having the same problem, and apparently Activision will not fix it.
I could agree with this if it said it didnt support that graphic card.
Oh well, mom is coming up this weekend, maybe I can talk her into to getting me a new video card.
How difficult is it to install?

Just to be sure to get the latest driver.

NVIDIA cards are easy to install. Just make sure when taking the old one out there is not a tab on the end of the motherboard slot helping to hold it in. My Intel board has this while my ASUS board does not. If there is a tab just gently pull it away from the card before pulling it out. The new one just pops into the AGP slot. There's nothing else to attach. Then just download the latest NVIDIA detonator drivers for your operating system, double click and follow the instructions, which are simple. That should do it.

I got it working.
Now if I can just figure out the campaign, oh well, it will come soon.

Downloading an updated Display driver from the NIVDIA website.
One quick question. What is up with the Office Title thing you can move around? Do I drop it on a general or what? And also do I appoint Govener's in my providences?

Doesn't have to be a general. Drop on someone with good acumen and they will make more money for that province. Also, if you want to increase someone's loyalty give them a title. Disloyal generals can start a revolution if you don't do something to take care of them. There are three or four options here. Give them a princess to marry, give them a title, assassinate them, or if you have that option send them on a crusade. :)

Yea, but I just let my computer check for the auto update instead of going to the site manually.
I learned never to trust my computer again.

I don't think the computer checks the internet, just looks on your computer (I think).
