Today I had to deliver some equipment to a customer about an hour and a half away from our shop. After delivering the equipment, I ran up the road to Mc Donald's to grab a bite before heading back to the shop.
Some guy walks up while I am heading in to grab a bite to eat. The guy tries to get my attention by mumbling something. I think he was calling me "Son." Anyway, he asks if I would mind buying him a burger and fries. I say sure, and tell him I need to run in the bathroom first to wash up. He waits a minute then comes in the bathroom and makes sure that I know he needs a coke. No problem. Then he asks if I would mind getting him a box of chicken because he is homeless and all, and needs some food for later. I tell him no, I am getting him lunch. Then he asks for just three bucks wants to know how much I have, etc.
Long story short, I get him the lunch, give it to him and walk off. What wrankles me is that I didn't even get a thank you!
Driving back, it dawned on me, how much of a pain in the ass trying to be nice to this guy actually was. I'm all for helping people, I never give cash, but I am willing to buy food directly. But, his constant asking for more really hacked me off. Here I am being nice enough to help a guy out, if you want more, get a dang job, do something to try and make ends meet. What really bugs me though is that rather than feeling good about helping someone out, I am really aggrevated by how much of a pain in the ass it was trying to be nice.

Being that it was a Mc Donalds I'm sure they had a now hiring sign. You should have got him a job application instead of the food.

The reason he asked for money could be that he was going to spend it elsewhere (read into this what you want).
Living near DC, more times than I care to remember have I been approached by a homeless individual asking for money for food, whereby I offer to buy them lunch at the nearest fast-food joint and they curse me for not just forking over the cash. Tough luck, shitbird, I tried to be nice so kiss your Whopper goodbye.

Once, back in New Orleans, I walked out of a corner store and was approached by an older woman who was either homeless or damn near homeless. First, she asked me for a quarter, and I turned her down. Then, she lowered her voice and whispered another question, but I couldn't understand her. She followed me down the street, continuing to whisper, and I told her that I couldn't hear her. Finally, she stood in front of me and repeated herself one more time, "Do you like kinky sex?"
So now I live in Pennsylvania.

If I ever get asked this question as I leave a corner store here, I'm moving west.
or man?
I have been asked this question on my way out of a corner store here. I'm still here.

Some of your stories, I wonder if they are exagerated for comedic effect. Not this one.

I was once hanging outside a jazz club in New York, when Paul Motian, a musician who I think was about 60, was walking up. A homeless guy asked him if he had some change. Motian said "no, sorry." The guy then said, "well, how about a dollar or two." Motian went nuts - started screaming at the guy, calling him a "motherfucking loser" and worse.
It was awesome.

I hand them my business card and tell them to come to the office to apply for Food Stamps. If they really want to eat they'll do that and get a week's worth of food for free while they wait from one of our community partners.
Usually they never bother showing up, though a couple of times they have followed through and applied.

I wish just once someone would be honest with me and say "hey, can you give me a buck so I can buy a beer?"

All that matters is that you did a good thing. His reaction just shows that he probably needed it more than most.
Kudos to you.

If you were a teenager, you would have tracked him down later tonight and lit him up with the paintball gun that grandma bought you, and had your friend videotape it so you could put it on your MySpace (after you popped some prescription pills, of course).

Not to sound contrary, but wtf good is a weeks worth of food for someone with nowhere to keep it and no way to cook it?
Nice thought, but a bit useless to the homeless person...

They give them "homeless packs". Local businesses donate cheap coolers, canned goods, bread etc. They also give out rain ponchos, clothing, socks, boots etc.
They cook it in the tent cities we have here. You know, over an open fire.
It's really quite helpful to those that take advantage of it, and done entirely without government financial support - though we do set them up with it.
It really makes limited welfare dollars go much further than they ordinarily would have.
Cheers.

I can tell you that this doesn't apply in his case. The town I was in may have 5,000 people in it.
Actually, if a guy asked me for a dollar to buy a beer, I'd probably give it to him for being honest. I have always maintained that if you actually want the meal, and you'd let me make the purchase, I would help you out.

Walking into an Arby's I am apprroached by a homeless man.
"Excuse me, do you have any spare change? I haven't eaten in 3 days, I am very weak and scared I wont make it througgh tonight."
I say no, go inside and start thinking I WOULD feel bad if this dude starved to death. So I buy him a montana or whatever they all there big ass sandwich and a large tea. On the way out the door I hand the bag and drink to the guy and give him a quick "God Bless, I hope you find a better way"
He thanks me, looks in the bag, and says "I hate Roast Beef" and throws it in a damn trash can beside him.
#1 HOW DARE YOU
#2 If you really hate Roast Fucking Beef that bad why the hell would you pick Arby's of all fucking places to hang out beside???? There is literally a mcDonalds 100 yards away

I have done this at least 2 different times. If I aam asked for money I generally ask say what it will be used for. When they have answered booze. I will hook them up for the honesty.
