I know that a lot of FOFCers have children so I'm sure you get a chance to see a lot of todays cartoons. I recently had a channel added to my cable called Boomerang which is a lot of the older cartoons. I was just curious what cartoons you like today and what cartoons did you like as child.

My current favorite: Sponge Bob Squarepants

Old time: Wally Gator or Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har

Let me know what you think.

More recently, I have enjoyed the comic book cartoons: Batman, Spiderman (the late 90s version), X-Men.

I always liked Hootie Cha-Cha and those little robot things with the scissors.

And the one about the Mosquitos, all those little mosquito packs and their short pants--I think it was called "Little Phucko"

I liked Speed Racer as a kid. I loved it.

It didn't carry over to a love of car racing as an adult though.

Current: Keeping in the "for kids" theme, I'd say Spongebob, too.

There is a thing on the Cartoon network called Adult Swim. I love the cartoons on there. THey (now) show episodes of Futurama. There's also a cartoon called Home Movies that I love.

Don't lie, Man! You know you liked Jem. I remeber this time back in college when a friend of mine was over watching football in my room and after the game my roommate flipped on cartoon network.

Somehow the conversation tued around to Jem. This was one of those music guys, who knows every song and artist.

Anyway, the challenge came up about who could sing the Jem theme song. I am a big cartoon guy. So you know I stepped up to the plate.

46 seconds later, we look over and see my roommate staring at us like I don't know what after a full duet rendition of the Jem Theme Song, complete with falsettoes.

He sat staring at us for a minute, then in deadpan says, "I'm turning to Primetime." and then turns away.

Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite Anime. I've seen the original OVAs and the series from episode 1 til the end of the Shishio saga. My friend has them all on VCDs and I might borrow them again to watch the rest.

I'm trying to get all the DVDs...so far I just have 1. :) (Episodes 28, 29, 30 and 31...start of the Shishio saga)

...illinifan, i miss all my cartoons too. I have WinMX and KaZaA and they are both running a lot trying to download old episodes of them. :)

Also, I forgot to mention Sealab 2021. I love that show too.

HB, when you become sophisticated you'll realize that the Space Voltron series was much better. It wasn't dumbed down as much.

As for Robotech: that's the story that got me interested in anime. However, after seeing the real deal, I understand why Carl Macek still recieves death threats to this day.

I'm suprised that someone else watched visionairies too. Who was your favorite. I was a Witterquick guy.

Old Ones: GI Joe (all-time favorite), Transformers, He-Man, Smurfs, the Warner Bros. variety cartoons, a bunch of other stuff lost in the recesses of my mind.

New Ones: Simpsons, Family Guy, Beavis and Butthead.

Also, does anybody remember that show that was 'interactive'? You would buy a toy, I think it was a spacecraft, and shoot at the screen during the show. You could get points for it but the enemies on the screen would 'shoot back' and could kill your guy. It always frustrated me because it never seemed to quite work right.

I just never got into Space Voltron. Just too many people and the vehicles all looked short, fat and unappealing. None of the characters stuck out. The Lions, on the other hand, were sweet looking. So very, very cool. The Ro-beasts were cool too. And every once in a while Sven would make an appearance. Sven. Everyone loves that guy.

Robotech was fantastic. Sure it was changed from the "real deal" and a bit goofy at times (then again, pretty much all anime is goofy at times), but it was so good. Great story lines, good characters, death, romance, etc, etc. Unseen for cartoons on US TV at that time. Of course, I prefered "Macross" and "Next Generation" to "Robotech Masters." But when Roy Fokker died? Ben? The SDF1 getting slammed into by Kyhron! Good times... Good times...

As for Visionaries. It's funny, but Witterquick is the only guy I remember too. It was really cool show. Sort of techno-fantasy. I had the toys too which were sweet. I remember very little about it all, other than I thought it was cool.

Weren't there actually three sets of Voltrons? I remember the space Voltron and the lion Voltron, but I seem to recall a third, which was never really shown on TV here.

Who was your favorite Cosby Kid? First one to say Theo gets a boot to the head.

I was rather fond of Bill, himself. As a kid I saw him as a viewpoint character since he was the only normal guy in the group.

I used to be a Transformers freak when I was a kid.. Would rush home from school everyday to catch it because it came on at 3:30 and I got out of school at 3:00.

Nowadays, I actually do watch cartoons from time to time with my oldest son (4).. I enjoy Hey Arnold!, and usually sit down with my son and watch it when I hear it on. It really is a quality cartoon with good storylines and great music, especially for a cartoon.. a lot of jazz as well as an appearance from time to time by Frank Sinatra, known as Dino Spimonie on the show..

does anyone remember Star Blazers? An old Japanese anime classic about a battleship retrofitted as a spaceship. Used to love that one.

oykib
02-27-2003, 12:36 PM
Yamato. It actually caused a lot of controversy back in the day. Basically the ship is one of the major characters. One of the defining points of the show is how the fighting spirit of the ship helps pull them through tough situations. Of course in 1979 the fact that this Japanese WWII battleship was one of the heroes of the show wasn't too well recieved.

Cartoons I liked when I was a kid:
Roadrunner
Muppet Babies
Dungeons & Dragons
Scoobie Doo (w/o Scrappy Doo, dear god I hate Scrappy Doo)

Current:
Home Movies
Sealab 2021
