i have become almost obsessive-compulsive about washing my hands because rotavirus almost killed my son this past week. he is on a steroid medication for seizures and it has weakened his defenses. if you have young ones i highly recommend washing your hands frequently, ESPECIALLY after going to the bathroom and before/after changing diapers. rotavirus kills 600,000 kids every year, and its passed most frequently through fecal matter. just be careful for yours and your kids' sakes.

Always in public bathrooms but rarely at home...

Only time I don't is every now and then when there is NO soap or towel, etc while out.

There was a guy I worked with who would walk into the bathroom, wash his hands, and THEN go take a crap.

After he finished his business, he would walk right out.

WTF!?! He washes his hands BEFORE he gets shit on them?

Only when there is no toilet paper.

After being a microbiologist, I believe that it's the best thing you can do...just with regular soap, not the antibacterial crap...that stuff will kill us all sooner or later.

What's wrong with antibacterial soap?

Geesh, thanks for this heads up. I have two young ones and I actually just stick their bottoms in the sink and wash off their butts with my hand. While I do wash afterwards, I'm going to be a lot more diligent and thorough now. I'd never heard of that before. Again, thanks.

Umm, it's called toilet paper or sani-wipes. Use them...:)

Ugh, turds in the sink, how icky...

Antibacterial soap kills all bacteria, including the good ones that are on your body, so it actually reduces your protection against bad bacteria (the good bacteria fend off the bad bacteria, unless you are immunocompromised).

Also, antibacterial is good in some cases, but we are overdoing it with antibacterial things (wipes, soaps, sponges, etc,). This is what got us into trouble with penicillin, it was the wonder drug, until we used it for everything, other bacteria began to adapt, to change, and to become immune to the effects...bacteria are very resilent critters, been around far longer than us, and will be around after we're gone...they will adapt, people die each year now because strains of bacteria are resistant to the antibiotics given to patients, so the patients die from the infection...antibacterials only help strengthen the more adaptable, resisentant laden bacteria by killing off all the weaker ones...

Just so you know...

Well, they're too young for TP and I just don't feel they get as clean with the sani-wipes. And it's not big turds in the sinks, just the remnants that hold on and don't fall in the diaper. Plus, after being thrown up on, peed on, and pooped on enough times you kinda get used to it. Trust me, you haven't lived until you've had an ill child vomit curdled milk all over you.

I voted before I read MattJones4Heisman's post. Can I change my vote? Hope your kid ends up ok. The wife is starting to squeak about wanting kids (How come biological clocks don't come with snooze buttons? Is there someone I can talk to about this?). I may have her read this thread.

Watch out for the flesh eating bacteria, especially in a public restroom.

I didn't always wash, but going up and down 10 flights of steep stairs leaves black...junk for lack of a better word...on your hands from the hand rails. I wash my hands often just to rid myself of the gunk.

There was a piece of poop in the drinking fountain at my school today, it was pretty gross.

Yesterday at work a little kid had an accident in the lobby of Olive Garden and one of the hosts had to clean it up.

Wait, let me clarify on "accident". The kid somehow got poop all over the floor of the lobby. Thank god I was serving and didn't have to spend any time in there...
