...that if I were to become so despondent and depressed that I decide to take my own life, that I will not take others with me.

I just don't get it.

N.J. Man Drowns 2 Daughters, Hangs Self

2 Daughters Found Drowned in Bathtub, Man Hanging in New Jersey House, Police Say

A man drowned his two young daughters in a bathtub and hanged himself at his home, authorities said.
The bodies of the 46-year-old man and the children, ages 5 and 6, were found Thursday, just hours after the girls' mother had dropped them off for a visit, police said.

The deaths were a double-murder and suicide, Montclair Deputy Police Chief Roger Terry said.
Police went to the house after the mother became concerned because the man hadn't answered his phone and no one answered the door when she knocked, Terry said.
Officers forced the door open and found the girls fully clothed and submerged in a bathtub on the first floor. They found the man hanging in a room on the third floor.
Assemblyman Thomas Giblin, D-Essex, identified the man as Thomas Reilly, a building engineer and former bar owner. Reilly emigrated from Ireland about 15 years ago and moved into the Montclair apartment in recent months after experiencing marital difficulties, Giblin said.
"This was so out of character," Giblin said. "He was a jovial type guy. All he ever did was work hard. Something happened here I don't know."

Any FOFC therapists/psychologists here who can speak to the pathology behind the "I'm leaving and I'm taking my loved ones with me"?

Almost impossible to say without knowing the facts of the case, but my guess would be that he was a very angry man who may have been facing losing his visitation due to his ex moving away or something similar. Whatever precipitated this, the guy certainly had anger issues and unfortunately took it out on his kids. I'm amazed how many cases I see where one or both parents abuse their own kids in horrific ways. It is very depressing at times. :(

He may have been screwed over by his wife and wanted revenge.

These cases are almost always a result of male proprietariness and mental illness.

Yup. I thought it was pretty typical in these cases that the guy is getting even with his wife (or vice versa) by taking the kids with them.

Nice, glad to see my home town in the news. I never understand these sort of things.

Edit: He had a prior restraining order filed against him by his wife. Was hoping for a reconciliation and then there was another argument. Just sounds like a violent person who was either not getting his way (reconciliation) or had some other serious problems.

Not in this particular instance, it doesn't seem, but maybe there's a "I'm worthless and it would have been best I never born so I'm taking not only myself but my 'legacy' with me" type thought in some of these cases.
