Could this mean he's taking the TPIR job?

ESPN announced today that longtime radio and television anchor Dan Patrick will be leaving the network in August. Patrick’s final radio broadcast will be on Friday, Aug. 17. The mutual agreement will allow Patrick to pursue new interests outside of ESPN, and will bring to an end his involvement with ESPN’s radio, television and magazine outlets.

The week of Patrick’s final show, ESPN Radio will look back at memorable moments from the show, in addition to featuring special guest appearances and interviews.

“I’ve spent a third of my life at ESPN," Patrick said in a statement. "All my children were born while I was employed here. I feel privileged to have had this opportunity and I have extremely mixed emotions about leaving. With that said, I told ESPN that I believe it’s time for me to try something different, something that will also be challenging and rewarding. While I’m not sure what that will be, I am grateful to ESPN for its willingness to allow me to pursue new endeavors.”

Patrick has hosted ESPN Radio’s Dan Patrick Show since 1999. He also recently served as host of the NBA studio program on ABC, "NBA Countdown," and the network’s game broadcasts, including the NBA Finals. He was a "SportsCenter" anchor from 1989-2006, and has written "Outtakes" for ESPN The Magazine.

Patrick was named National Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) in 2000, and received a Sports Emmy Award in the Studio Host category in 1998. Prior to ESPN, Patrick, a graduate of the University of Dayton, was a sports anchor/reporter for CNN (1983-89).

TPIR would be my top guess. I can't see him leaving if he didn't have another lucrative deal lined up.

TPIR?

As in The Price is Right???

Has he been rumored for that job or something? I can't see him fitting in there at all.

Initial reaction is that he would be terrible as the host of tpir.

Yes, we've been discussing this in the Price is Wrong thread.

Yes, we've been discussing this in the Price is Wrong thread.

I just read through that thread. Sheesh. I have never seen the appeal of TPIR, and think it would be a horrible move for Patrick.

I think the only thing that has been keeping the show on the air for the past 20 years was Barker. It will be almost impossible for the next host to succeed, no matter who it is.

How about the guy from Sabado Gigante?

How about the guy from Sabado Gigante?

Now that you mention it, an English speaking version of him would be pretty much perfect.

Good call.

ESPN is a shell of its former self anyway, so..this is no big deal. He's done his time and as we know, he'll be nowhere near the 'celebrity' that he was with the Worldwide Leader.

I try to watch espn every now and then and just end up saying the same thing after like 5 minutes..."meh".

That Sportscenter is just unwatchable now.

I like his radio show. That and "Mike and Mike" is the only thing ESPN has going for it.

"The Herd" is the best thing on ESPN radio today. I have been tired of the arrogant Patrick for quite some time. Dan used to be one of my favorites back in college, although that was almost 15 years ago.

Also hearing talk of DP moving to WFAN in New York. He has basically said that radio is in his immediate future but not so sure about any TV down the road. Kind of shoots down TPIR theory unless it is just a smokescreen.

I actually really enjoy "The Herd" as well. I occasionally like Mike & Mike and The Dan Patrick Show as well, depending on who they're interviewing. When Keith and Dan are on together I generally tune out...for whatever reason I don't enjoy how they interact. I liked The SportsBash when Erik Kuselias hosted it, but I haven't listened to it since he left.

It didn't need to be fixed. Pseudo-intellectual sports geeks hate Mike and Mike, but I think they're fun to listen to.

Dola.

I'm not saying you're a pseudo-intellectual sports geek; I'm just saying that you have bad taste. :)

How can you not like Patrick because of his perceived arrogance, but yet like a show hosted by the most arrogant, blowhard numbskull in the business?

I enjoy Mike and Mike, but I only listen for about 10 minutes each morning (the joys of a short short commute). I think if I listened to the entire show, I'd find them much more annoying. I've also realized recently that I only really focus on them when they're talking about sports.

Dan P., I rarely got to listen to him, since I can't stream audio at work, but if I have to go to a doctor's appointment or something in the middle of the day, I do try to catch him, especially when KO is on.

I think the only sports stuff I listen to regularly is the MLB.com Fantasy 411 (which I found about here). I also tend to catch ATH and PTI while I'm at the gym, but I think I'd hate them, too, if I were listening. While at the gym, I usually have my music on and read the subtitles...

In the end, I think it'll be interesting to see where Dan goes. Just to see what he's going to do now, after spending sooo much time with ESPN.

Maybe Olbermann got him thinking that he could be political.

On a sidenote: WDFN Detroit local boys Mike Stone and 'Wojo" will be filling in for Jim Rome nationally on Friday 13th. Lots of Detroit stuff on tap so any ex-pat Michiganders looking for some local Detroit stuff might want to catch it. Tigers and Pistons workings likely to dominate.

I'm definitely not a "Pseudo-intellectual sports geek," but I find Mike and Mike annoying. I do like the "Herd" more than I thought I would when he came on here. I have a feeling he'll be moving to the Patrick slot, and there's a good chance Kincaid who has an ESPN weekend gig and regularly fills in for Herd will get his slot.

I'd say it's pretty easy if you believe Patrick's arrogance to be sincere, yet think Cowherd's arrogance is a gimmick.

They gave kincaid every opportunity to take over the Sports Bash segment, and he flopped.
I am almost glad to see DP go he had become stale and almost robotic of late.
its really a shame, Eric Kusialies (sp?) was by far the closest thing to intellectual radio they had going and they moved him to a TV gig in his admitedly least favorite sports entertainment segmeent.
maybe its the former lawyer, or the fact that he actually has a measurable IQ but I thoroughly enjoyed EK, while I find CC unlistenable

Bummer. Patrick was the only thing I listened to on ESPN since I'm sleeping during Mike and Mike.

It'd be a hoot if Amy Lawrence (who last time I checked was still doing some overnight work with Eric Kasilias) somehow managed to get Patrick's timeslot, or at least her own show in a shuffled lineup. She and I worked together at KTOK in Oklahoma City. She left to work at a tiny sports talk station in Norman, Oklahoma and actually got fired from there. From what I can tell it was the best thing to happen to her career.

I dunno. He kindof dismissed that when he announced it yesterday on his show (I happened to be in the car about the time I thought he would say something and listened in). He joked about all the rumors going around on blogs about him and that was one he mentioned.

And I think he also said he'd be on the radio again. Not that he couldn't do both, but I'm wondering if this is just going to be a Chris Myers type move, or whether Olbermann has him thinking outside the sports box.

Don't think ESPN has announced who will permanently replace DP. I like Kuselias and would be happy with him as the replacement, though I think ESPN might go with a higher profile name.

Some good final shows last week...surprising not to see KO make an appearance. Guess he was off saving the democracy.

No announcement yet but Kussellias should get first crack if he wants it. Keeping Mike and Mike as a morning show (which it should) he is clearly the best choice they have of the current guys.

Agreed, Cowherd becomes very repetitive at times and Mike and Mike is more flash than actual substance I find.

I subscribe to the ESPN Insider so usually I just pick and choose the segments I want to hear. DP was the only show I would actually listen to start to finish.
