I am probably just being really thick here, but I really don't understand this.

Short version of the story-- guy is going on a 26 day water only fast in protest of the war in Iraq. He's camping out in front of an army recruitment center in Pittsburgh (actually the Oakland section of town, where Pitt and CMU are located).

What exactly does he think he's proving to, say me, but starving himself?? I am sure there are people who will preach for his cause, etc etc, but the majority of the general public? How does this effect us?

My wife works at a Univ of Pitt hospital...and I wanted her to walk down and find him to ask him for me. She said hell no.

The way I look at it, if the guy starves himself, maybe he'll feel like some sort of martyr. But all I see is one less protester to block my way on the sidewalk.

Hunger strikes work better if you are already in prison. The powers that be don't usually want you dying on their watch, especially if you are in there for political reasons...

He's not proving a point. He's getting the media to cover his stance. There is no need for a point when dealing with the masses.

Good point, ask David Blaine.

The fact that we are talking about this, he's already done what he's set out to do.

My guess: He's doing something idiotic to mirror an idiotic war
