I need a new Hobby

I am looking for something challenging and time consuming. I don't play much poker anymore, WOW is boring beyond belief now, and my mountain bike is in the shop. Anyone take up a new hobby lately that they have been enjoying, I am not sure what to get into next.

Those are the three I picked up this year. German is the language I picked mostly because I took it in high school so I am familiar with it, but I pretty much had forgotten everything. And I started to teach myself to play the piano. Both are pretty low cost. The Rosetta Stone software for languages is a bit pricey ($300+), but books for learning languages aren't. You can get a pretty good keyboard relatively cheap. I think the keyboard I got ran me about $200 or so (compared to how much a full electronic piano will run you, that's pretty cheap).

Well, the hobby I picked up when I needed something time-consuming and able to do even when my body didn't cooperate (read: when I injured myself) was cross-stitching. I don't see too many guys doing it, but I do know that the Boise State RB (Ian Johnson? Whoever he is, they did a feature on him last year on ESPN, and his hobby was a large portion of it) crochets, so maybe you could pick that up? (I'm more than half serious).

I like the idea of board games, though I'd probably end up tied more to a computer.

Have you tried chess? Getting good requires time/practice/study.

When someone else asked this before, I mentioned photography. Keeping a camera on you at all times, and just shooting a ton, is a good way to start...of course, as a girl, it's probably easier for me to keep a camera with me, as I can keep it in my bag, guys usually rely on pockets...

If you're going to go this route, I'd recommend getting a friend who wants to help. Some of the steps involved with homebrewing can be quite difficult with only one pair of hands, in my experience.

Another idea could be to donate your time to charity - be a big brother, help out at a soup kitchen, etc.

Not only do you get to collect and simulate battles with your armies but you get to build and paint all the little models as well.

Also, what part of the country are you in? There are many game groups in different parts of the country that would be willing to welcome you into their group.

I second boardgames, they've been my hobby for several years, they're fun, there's a lot of strategy to them and they make you think, and you get to meet a lot of new people. It somewhat depends on where you live though, if you're in a rural area you may find less people to play with.

How about flying remote control airplanes - they look cool as heck to me, but with three young kids they'd have next to no survival rate with me (proved by the fact that I've got two broken remote control helicopters* in the house currently ;) ).

I used to brew beer with my friends. It's a great hobby, but not one that keeps you occupied every day. It's more of an "okay, this Saturday we're going to brew an oatmeal stout" type hobby. You also need an abode that lends itself to storing the beer (i.e. one place that is completely dark and at a consistent temperature).
