We have an American Eskimo and a Pomeranian (along with 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs) - I've always wanted a Golden Retriever and I can't believe I'm thinking about getting one today.. 3 dogs, I'm NUTS!!! :eek:

There is an ad in the paper for GR puppies and I just spoke to a nice lady who has 1 boy puppy left and is holding it for me. I know if I go, it's all over with.

My kids would go nuts and my wife would freak out (in a good way).

my dog is staring at me right now, he's hovering over the tennis ball... his eyes are saying "fucking reach down and throw the ball".

He just hit it to me with his paw. I think the dog is human.

I would love to be able to have two dogs, but I don't think our dog would handle it well. He gets along with other dogs, but just a little too well. He gets a bit crazy when he's with other dogs and just wants to play, play, play all the time.

We have friends who bring their dog (Billy) over about once a week or so, or we bring our dog (Aegon) to their place. Aegon rarely ever calms down when he's around Billy. He paces around, tail wagging, constantly wanting to play. Even one poor Billy is tired and tries to hide, Aegon will keep pawing at him relentlessly.

We leave Aegon at doggy daycare twice a week and apparently it's no different there. Apparently he is in such a rush to play that he eats too fast and drinks too fast and then ends up throwing-up frequently.

I am sure he would work this out of his system eventually, but I wouldn't want to take that risk. He's still less than 2 years old, so it's likely he'll calm down and we can get another dog in the future.

My family has a yellow lab, and he's frigging awesome. Golden labs are a good substitute. ;)

Btw, my cousins have a newfoundland - possibly the coolest dogs ever. Wrestling with a 140 lb newfy is entertaining at worst. :D

We have a puppy, Weeble (aka Weebs)...he's as sweet as can be and I love him to death - wouldn't trade him for the world! We are looking for a house to rent and we can find (and afford) one with a fenced in backyard, we'll likely get another puppy at some point in the not too distant future.

Definitely get the puppy - they are like kids, sure they are work and annoy the crap out of you sometimes, but at the end of the day, when you snuggle up next to them in bed it's all worth it...and be sure to post pics once you get him home and the chaos dies down :D

Me and my girlfriend adopted a 7 year old Beagle last May. I love it and wish we could get another dog. We will eventually but we live in a very small apartment.

The only problem is that he's had a lot of health issues. Fortunately nothing serious- but he has hypo-thyroid (which he takes pills for everyday), when he was a couple of months old he had an abscess that had to be removed, he gets ear infections often, has bad allergies and gets plenty of hotspots. Sometimes he licks his whole stomach raw.

I'll take those health issues in trade for how he is, though. With his temperament you really feel like he is man's best friend and not just some animal living in your house.

That's great to hear, well.. besides the health issues. Just seeing how he is makes me feel like I made the right choice. He's a puppy, but he's so mild mannered.

My first thought was that American Eskimo aren't known for being particularly good with other dogs, but then I realized that they aren't actually husky derivatives. (At holidays at my house, I was in charge of keeping our Siberian Husky away from the other relative's dogs). She did not approve of their presence.

He's doing well. His playmate right now is our big outside cat who loves to play with about any animal that wants to play.

Our American Eskimo wasn't happy with him at first, but he's already coming around and is starting to tolerate interacting with him. The pomeranian could care less as she rarely leaves the friendly confines underneath our bed. :)

The puppy as most puppies do, has eaten some grass, dirt, old flowers, etc.. and every now and then acts like he's going to puke - so I've been keeping watch most of the day. I'm just glad we have a nice big fenced in yard for him to roam on days like today (70+ degrees).

Yes, he's still pretty laid back. He has a clothes basket full of chew stuff and he likes to chew on everything.. he still jumps up on occasion when company comes over, loves to aggrivate the other animals and can be a PITA at times.. but overall, a great dog so far.

I can't believe he's grown so fast though.. sweet jeebers!

so Nola, since yesterday, wont put any weight (which is a lot of weight) on her hind right leg. Im having to carry her outside to go to the bathroom. This is an ongoing issue that creeps up every now and then but this seems to be the worst Ive seen it. She's on her way to a knee surgery I think...which might be better than hip replacement I dunno. Regardless it's gonna cost me a pretty penny (so this could transition to the 2008 financials thread) and she thinks this about it:

Flasch, Bernie has arthritis and we give him cosequin and deramaxx and it makes a huge difference.

Not sure if that is the case but you may want to ask your vet about it

thinks it's a torn ACL and we'll need to do surgery. still a possibility that after they go in that it could turn out to be the hip but theyre fairly certain its the knee. Pow $1500 knee, $2500 antivenim vs. the Cottonmouth, food, meds, this sucks....

plus anytime they put her under she could....double sucks! damnit.

So my girlfriend and I are probably going to adopt another dog before this summer. We don't really know what kind we want though. The beagle we have now was in a rescue that only had beagles...and our dog had a friend there and we may consider adopting him.

Yeah last night was rough. In an out of bed, she was whining so much but she wouldnt let me pick her up to help her. Finally I just ignored the whining and took her outside and she immediately went to the bathroom.....that helped :)

My girl dog has had rib injuries on at least two occasions (maybe more). There were a couple of times when she would go a week or so where we'd pick her up and she'd scream in agony - we had no clue why. The only way we finally knew is one of the times they were injured enough that they healed awkwardly and created a lump at the end of a couple of the ribs.

Anyway. Point being, wish she could have said "ow, ow! my ribs, my ribs!" the first time. Hearing that whining and not knowing what to do about it is one of the worst feelings.

Hmm, maybe not what I was hoping for. My dog seems afraid to actually swim. She'll walk until her front paws start to kind of float, and then she won't go any further and sort of just paws at the water in frustration (along with some barking for good measure). Also, if we go swimming she clearly wants to come with us, but can't get the nerve, so she stands and barks at us incessantly until we come out. Quite vexxing.

So my hope was that your class might have had some kind of section on adjusting dogs to swimming, etc, and that you could maybe impart some of that wisdom my way. I guess I could try strapping a life jacket on her and seeing if she is more comfortable that way, but I'm skeptical.

Pretty cool to see those pics of your dog swimming though, that looks like it would be fun to spend time with your dog that way!

That is a stunningly beautiful puppy...very striking! Most puppies are "cute" and "adorable" and all that, but she is just gorgeous...give her lots and lots of love!

Our babies have been at the boarders since Tuesday afternoon, we had to go out of town for a family emergency and didn't get back in time to pick them up tonight :( The house is SO quiet without them and I miss them so much...can't wait to see them tomorrow!!!!

Our little soft coated wheaten terrier. We've had her for three days now but she's already 11-12 weeks old. We went on so many vacations so we decided to hold off a little longer before picking her up. So far so good as she's got the crate training down pretty well. No crying at night yet....

Just got back from the vet a bit ago. Last night I was doing yard work when I made my way to the back yard. My oldest great dane (10) had found a nice little dirt hole (probably dug by my other dane) to crawl in. She has arthritis, and looked like she wanted up but was having trouble. So I went to help her and found she could barely stand on her own, and didn't really want to walk of course. I got her moved a little way and when I put her down and looked at her she had massive swelling (that was rock hard) under the neck, on the chest, on her left shoulder down her left front leg, a little on her left ear, and she wasn't really opening her left eye much. I laid her down on the unswollenside of her. Being late in the day and not knowing what was going on exactly I let her rest, brought her some food and water which she ate/drank thankfully.

This morning I HAD to leave early in the morning to do some work stuff (of course this happens during a horrible 3 day busy stretch) and when I get back at about 10 AM I went out to check on her. Went to help her up as she had decided to lay down on her swollen side again. Right away I feel wetness. Her skin opened up on her shoulder and a blood/puss mixture was leaking out in heavy amounts. Spent a crazy time of trying to take her to one vet who was close, getting warned off by his assistant that not much would be done (it was really odd), so we said screw this and took the longer trip to our normal vet.

Cutting this short. We are back home with her. They agree with my worry (which came from flasch's ordeal) that she may have been bitten by something, snake or spider maybe. Though no vets down here do any kind of testing for it I guess. They cleaned out the open abscess and gave us antibiotics. They also confirmed the poor girl is partially blind, which wasn't a horrible surprise. She is now resting in her one room doggy suite with her own a/c. She is drinking water and just ate some food, in fact got excited about the food which was nice to see. Hopefully she will be able to walk in a few days though, not sure I can spend more then that carrying her in and out to go to the bathroom.:)

Well, she got up to walk a bit ago. Forced her way onto her feet to eat and drink (she was doing it laying down before). After eating she walked out to piss, came back in to look for more food I guess, then made it out onto the patio before the urge to crap over took her. Overall, her spirits seemed better too, as did her left eye....

I think some time alone, away from the other two dogs has helped and some good old fashion rest. I know the antibiotics haven't kicked in that fast. Hopefully she is still improving come morning. I think the fluid coming out of her from her shoulder and leg is the key. It must have been causing a lot of pain at the peak and she didn't want to put too much pressure on her front legs. COmbine that with weak back legs from her arthritis and that was a bad situation for her.

Great Danes are just awesome dogs.

When I was growing up we had one that romed our neighborhood, that was before leash laws.

He was just massive yet so damn friendly and his name was THOR. I never really knew who the owner was but he loved to follows us kids around.

Yes it is, although we had a great dane for several years whom lived to 13. We got her when she was 10 as her owners were moving north and didn't want to expose her to a real winter. She had bad arthritis in her rear hips and legs but had adapted to it so that she had this massive chest that she put all her weight on. although you still had to help her sometimes like on stairs or into the car. Crazy old lady is what she was, and I still am amazed by her living that long.

We called around, it just seems no one down here does anything too different even if they know for sure it's a snake/spider bite. My wife asked some straight out like we knew that was the problem. There might be, I would think there would be, but we didn't have the time yesterday and I have never had a problem like this in my 11 years down here.

Update: Hopefully just stiff this morning. She couldn't get up because she was not putting any pressure on her front feet. After carrying her out she was able to get better footing in the yard and walked some to piss. Didn't want to move after that though so I carried her back in. Baby steps.....

Our little soft coated wheaten terrier. We've had her for three days now but she's already 11-12 weeks old. We went on so many vacations so we decided to hold off a little longer before picking her up. So far so good as she's got the crate training down pretty well. No crying at night yet....
I have two wheatens.. They are really cool dogs. I'm sure yours has lost that brown and black color and is fairly white now. I will post a picture of our newest puppy, Annabelle.

Hope everything works out with her...post some pics if you have them too, Great Dane's are so gorgeous! There is one that comes to the dog park we frequent, he's very friendly - but it's hysterical b/c my fearless little jack russell/beagle mix will go up to any dog and start playing...he'll run right up to the Great Dane, but when he's about 3 steps away and looks up, he stops dead in his tracks and just sits in front of her and waits for the GD to make the first move. Only dog he is afraid of :)

Her name is Annabelle and she is 4 months old now. In the picture she is 3 months old.. The breeder estimated that she'll be around 50 pounds.

And here is Wiggums (left) and Melody (right), our other two dogs. Melody is actually the daughter of Daisy. We got them both from a breeder who, well breeds, and shows danes. I think she may just breed now. She lives outside of Houston so each one cost us about 11 hours of driving each there and back. They were both "retired" when we got them and about 4-6 years old, somewhere in there. Wiggums is from the Humane Society, and is supposed to be retriever/rott mix. He was the last one of a litter they had, the rest were snatched up quickly because they looked more like rotts.

Wow, looking at that picture I see where you get that. It is possible. I have never seen snakes around here but it's not like it is impossible. Usually it is a little more round looking when she has her head up more, or is standing, still that picture kind of makes it look like expanded bite marks in a way.

Hard to say. I looked over that area before that thing busted open and didn't see anything. I could easily have missed it though and that would make sense as to why that area was more swollen then other areas, and why it busted open there. Never know for sure now though I guess.

The good thing is it is evening. Like yesterday evening she seems to have an energy burst and was walking around some. Ate a bunch of food tonight as well. She isn't too happy right now though because I am washing the blanket she has been using and only has an old t-shirt of mine to rest her head on. :)

Awww, poor baby! That picture looks awful, but I'm glad to hear she is doing better...hopefully you got her blanket back to her before bedtime ;)
