Wow...I guess I'm not shocked, but I am a little surprised. I guess he felt this might be his best shot at leaving on a good note?
I hear Marty Schottenheimer is available. :)

So, does Williams get the gig?

Ideally I would like to see Williams and have Saunders stay on as OC. I would hate for them to have to learn a completely new offensive system after all of the time and effort it took to install Saunders'.
Gibbs might not have met expectations this time around, but I think the past few months have shown what an incredible leader he is. I think he leaves with his hall of fame legacy intact.

Honestly, it was a no-lose situation after Taylor's death.
Have you ever read about an active athlete's death where the media consensus was, "Wow, they didn't handle that death very well".
The Taylor stuff got a little weird the last few weeks.

I don't know if the game has passed Gibbs by from a coaching perspective or not, but Gibbs definately does leave with alot of class and respect. This year's coaching job is nothing to be ashamed of considering he had 2 of the 4 best NFC teams in his division that he had to play twice each as well as other tough games such as the Pats. Added to that the off field issues that he had no control of, and still making it to the playoffs, I think he can leave with his head high. He wasn't perfect, yes he blew a game for his team.. but that happens at times (See Pittsburgh vs Jax), however he did a fine job and nothing to disgrace a Hall of Fame career.

Sure, plenty have teams have not dealt well with adversity. Plenty of people, organizations, etc. have trouble with adversity and plenty of leaders don't handle it well. Gibbs does and did.
The team could have easily quit - particularly after the stomach punch loss they took to Buffalo the week of Taylor's death. Remember they lost that game, went to Taylor's funeral as a team on Monday, then turned around and played the Bears on Thursday night. They won that game and then won out. Everyone would have understood if they had come up short, but they didn't.
Maybe something you aren't getting in your neck of the woods - there is palpable love and admiration of Gibbs from every player and coach in that organization. It goes beyond football, I think. He is the unquestioned leader of that team and according to all accounts he helped lead them through that crisis.

Probably true - I don't think the national media covered the Taylor stuff very well.

I think this situation would be right for Bill Cowher.
It will be interesting to see if there is interest on either side.

Obviously I think Gibbs the GM needs to be replaced by someone outside the organization - of course that won't happen. :(

from the WaPo Insider's Blog:
Bye Joe
Everyone here at Redskins Park is pretty stunned. One staff member who was in the room at 9 a.m. when Joe Gibbs informed the coaches of his decision said: "I am shocked and numb." The strong sentiment from the players and people here I spoke to today is that Gregg Williams should get the job, and that's coming from offensive and defensive players alike.
One former Redskin, who speaks daily to many of his former teammates, said: "It has to be Gregg, there's no doubt about it. If they go from outside guys will be pissed. Unless they want to tear up the team and go with a different group of guys, it has to be Gregg."
Spoke to some people close to Russ Grimm, a former Redskin and longtime esteemed NFL assistant, who said his current team, Arizona, had not been contacted by the Redskins. Of course, we are very early in the process so things could change. Bill Cowher, former Super Bowl coach with Pittsburgh, will be a name everyone talks about as well.
Jason Reid just spent some time alone with starting WR Antwaan Randle El, who played on Cowher's championship team in Pittsburgh. Randle El voiced strong support for Gregg Williams: "I want the best coach for the job and Gregg is certainly at the top of the list, no doubt. I would love to see him get it just 'cause we've gotten going with the crew that we have here. I would love to see Gregg keep it and let's keep our offensive coordinator. Let's keep all that intact."
Gibbs would commit to virtually nothing during his press conference Monday, but did say that he wanted to retain the coaching staff. As most are in their final year of the contract - and some, like LB Coach Kirk Olivadati, have contracts that are expiring - there would have to be a round of contract extensions in that case.
Spoke to the agents for several prominant coaches and coaching candidates this morning. They all said they believed Williams would get the job, but that was just their reading of the situation and did not come from conversations with Gibbs or Snyder.
Snyder loves Joe and no doubt Gibbs's voice will carry heavy weight with ownership.

I'm sure Snyder would throw a ton of money at him

Doesn't Williams get a couple million if he's not chosen as the sucessor? It'll be interesting if some big name like Cowher gets linked to the job from the get-go, and whether or not they can then find someone to fullfill their Rooney Rule obligations afterwards.
RE: Gibbs
Sad to see him go. Skins have always been one of my 2nd or third favorite teams, in spite of Snyder. Gibbs was just pure class, there's not many like him in the league.
