This site allows you to compare census demographics for zipcodes. I found it mildly amusing.

I could spend a lot of time with this if I had the time.
First thing that jumped out about my zip code is the 1.4% unemployment rate. That certaintly helps to explain why way more than half the people I know here in their 20s moved here from somewhere else in the last 5 years.

The differences between my old zip and my new zip are shocking. I knew there were some differences, but didn't realize the magnitude of the changes.

I don't think that is exactly right. It is not just NH like that, this is my zip code, and I definitly don't live in the middle of nowhere.
Grafton, MA:
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td class="text">Hispanic/Latino: </td><td class="text" align="right">3.1%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">White*: </td><td class="text" align="right">92.4%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Black*: </td><td class="text" align="right">2.3%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Native American*: </td><td class="text" align="right">0%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Asian*: </td><td class="text" align="right">1.5%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Hawaiian/Pacific Islander*: </td><td class="text" align="right">0%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Other*: </td><td class="text" align="right">0%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Multiracial*: </td><td class="text" align="right">0.7%</td></tr></tbody></table>
I think you will see a similar break down in most of new england other than in the cities (Boston, Framingham, Worcester, Springfield, etc)
For instance, just one zip code over (literally 3 minutes up the street), see how much it changes:
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td class="text">Hispanic/Latino: </td><td class="text" align="right">24.8%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">White*: </td><td class="text" align="right">57.3%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Black*: </td><td class="text" align="right">11.1%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Native American*: </td><td class="text" align="right">0%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Asian*: </td><td class="text" align="right">3.5%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Hawaiian/Pacific Islander*: </td><td class="text" align="right">0%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Other*: </td><td class="text" align="right">0.7%</td></tr><tr><td class="text">Multiracial*: </td><td class="text" align="right">2.2%</td></tr></tbody></table>

Dola, the funny thing I found on this site is it lists the schools in my zip code and only 1 hispanic child is enrolled in the entire elementary school. (only 2 black, 18 asian and the rest white). This is of interest to me since my wife is hispanic and my youngest daughter is mixed.
I guess she will get to experience elementary school like I did when I grew up in Atlanta. I was one of only 2 white students in the entire elementary school :)

And Grafton most definitely IS the middle of nowhere. Its west of 495.

Wow, super site! Can't wait to show it to my students.
I think it's sad how far my town, "the most liberal city in America", San Francisco, is from equality:
94124: Black 47.2, Hispanic 16.7, Asian 24.2, White 5.4
94123: Black 0.5, Hispanic 3.9, Asian 9.5, White 83.8
94124: less than 9th grade education 17.7
94123: 1.9
94124: 21.7 below poverty line, 37,146 median income
94123: 3.6, 84,710 median income
Not that people should be punished for being successful, or visa versa. I just find it strange how this city FREAKS OUT over plastic bags and yet essentially ignores these quality of life problems.

Umm ... it's almost exactly ten times larger than the zip code I actually grew up in (30177 = <400 people)
edit to add: I imagine that the reason it has a post office & zip code at all is that there's an industrial employer with several operations also in the zip code.

I just find it strange how this city FREAKS OUT over plastic bags and yet essentially ignores these quality of life problems.
bro, this would be a good teaching opportunity. Can't ever go wrong with teaching kids about geography/demographics/sociology. :)

Umm ... it's almost exactly ten times larger than the zip code I actually grew up in (30177 = <400 people)
edit to add: I imagine that the reason it has a post office & zip code at all is that there's an industrial employer with several operations also in the zip code.
Land mass is huge I suppose, hence the zip code, it's somewhat funny that some of the kids in the zip code can live closer to 2 different school districts than the one they actually attend. And there's a "town" and no local mail for it, so I'm sure that's another reason for the zip code.

Our city (West Bend) has 2 high schools in the exact same building. West Bend East and West Bend West.
From what I know, What day you were born on determines the school (odds and evens), unless you have an older sibling and they dictate it.

I didn't care about any of it, since I knew all of this stuff before. But since everyone else did it...
I was far more interested in stuff like people who've been in their houses more than 5 years. I was surprised that New Jersey (where I grew up had a higher percentage of people who had then Western Illinois or Wyoming. Especially the latter, since people here pride themselves on staying forever. It's their kids that leave...
I also found the income breakdowns interesting, because sometimes I forget how inflexible the economy in Wyoming is until you see the breakdown of salaries and the concentration of jobs people have, relative to other places.
