I just heard about the Pepsi Stuff / Amazon MP3 promo. I have a couple of 12-packs here so I opened them and put in the codes on the Pepsi stuff website thinking I might win a couple of songs. Nope! It turns out that you need five codes to get one free song. Each 12 pack is worth two points. How is this strategy going to get people to try out the Amazon MP3 service (assuming they haven't already; I have) when it costs more to get enough points than it does to just purchase a track for 99 cents?

i don't think that logic works - it costs more because you're getting soda as part of your purchase. if you were just buying pepsi for the mp3 codes, then pouring the soda down the drain, then yes, it isn't worthwhile.

But it still feels like a bit of a rip-off. It might not be, but 1st perceptions are a powerful thing in advertising.

It feels like a ripoff because you get free stuff when you drink Pepsi, which millions of people already do anyways?

You can send off for unlimited "free" codes (free in quotes because its the price of a stamp. You get four codes with each envelope, but it doesn't say if there is a limit (only limit of 1 request per envelope). So that way, each code costs 10.25 cents. So essentially, its like getting music at half off (5 envelopes = 20 points = 4 songs = $2, so you get a song for $.50 instead of $.99)
So if you want to handwrite like 300 envelopes, which is like $120, you can get 240 songs, or like 20 cds.

or you can do what I did back in college: walk through the neighborhood on 'Recycling Day' and pull off the codes that you find in the trash.
