For the first time this year, I started to get the sense that the whole Super Bowl ads phenomenon was getting old. I don't know if it is because I am getting older (45 next month), or whether in general they are getting safer and safer, but I just didn't find them that great overall.

Having said that ;) , here were my "top three" commercials:

1. Rocky-themed commercial with the clydesdale
2. Pepsi commercial where everyone is nodding off and that annoying but catchy song is playing (I remember the original Saturday Night Live skits long before the Night at the Roxbury movie).
3. For some reason I liked the commercial at the 2-minute warning where the guy clipped the starter cables to his nipples to jump start the car. I had to give them bonus points for trying something different.

Which ones did you like...?

I liked Jackie Moon for Bud Light. And I would agree that the Super Bowl commercials are getting old.

I can't stand watching commercials and the Super Bowl ads are no different. Once the break starts, I'm flipping to something else even if it is the Super Bowl.

I don't even remember most of the commercials. That demonstrates to me that I'm past the whole "Super Bowl commercial" hoopla. I'm glad that the game was great, but I didn't leave my seat at all because I didn't want to miss the commercials or the game. I'll never do that again. This year's commercials, as a whole, were weak.

I always let the game get ahead of my on the DVR and then zip through commercials and the halftime show. It's my way of taking back the Super Bowl from those who have stolen it from football fans in an effort to bring in non-fans for the event. The only one I watched was the one with Buzz Lightyear and Woody.

The Bud Lite makes you breath fire ad was good.

The Coke ads (balloon fight and Carville/Frist) were very amusing.

My fav, though, was probably Budweiser "Rocky".

I think for those saying the weakest crop was this year say that every year. I think these were better than last year's, for one.

I was dissapointed by this year's commercials. I actually am one of those who love watching for the commercials, and this year only a handful were good to me. For the first time in a long time the game actually was better than the commercials (which I guess when you think about it is a good thing).

The ones I did like in no particular order:

The Budweiser Rocky commercial
Both coke ads (The balloon fight and the Carville one)
The Ben Rothelisberger (sp?) for American Idol
Fed Ex pigeons
Prison Break ending up on the superbowl field

The Bud Light (breathing fire and flying) ads were ok, not great but I liked them.

Not me. I usually like the ads, but this year there weren't any that made me laugh or go wow like there usually are...

Anyone have a link to the Roethlisberger commercial? I didn't get it on the Canadian feed, and it's not on the myspace page. But I was told I'd like it.

I'm proud of myself for not watching a single one.

How in the world did the advertising industry pull of this idea that super bowl commercials are entertaining, and something you have to watch with the same attention as the game. Pure brilliance. They're commericals for god's sake!!

I liked the Budweiser Clydesdale one and the one where that Life water commercial with the woman and lizards dancing.

Not sure if it counts as a commercial, but I thought the most amusing ads were the series of spots where the terminator robot came out and started beating the crap out of Fox's football robot and then his buddies showed up.

I didn't think they were bad, but the 100freesalesleads.com or whatever commercials sucked ass.

That being said, I was really peaved that half the commercials were better picture quality than the friggen superbowl.

Are we as an audience so stupid? Perhaps we are.

But I wonder if the perpetual hype goes back to the Michael Jackson Pepsi spot in '83/'84 (can't remember the exact year) where the big story was about Jacko's Jeri Curl catching on fire during some pyrotechnics on the shoot.

Ah, that section wasn't there last night, weird.

Yeah I do like the Roethlisberger one. Sounds like me trying to squeeze a song out.

LOL... I have been a Tivo owner since October 2003 with one of the main reasons being to skip the commercials. So count me as another "sucker", but I am beginning to wise up.

Super Bowl commercials hit their ceiling a long time ago because you cannot offend in an ad. Therefore, from a creative standpoint there are only so many places they can go, and the ground is just very well worn now. That + Puppy Bowl = Who needs Super Bowl commercials anymore?

I usually Fast forward through commercials with my DVR on most programming. That is because commercials generally are boring, have been seen a million times or a waste of time. Historically the super bowl commercials are for the most part new commercials, and at least a decent number of really funny ads.

It probably is the one time of the year where I turn commercial watching into entertainment as well. Perhaps that is exactly what they want in trying to sell their goods, but hey, if it is something I enjoy, I don't really care :)

I know this is just going to rub some sand in a sensitive area for a few people but ...

Meanwhile, a separate survey from TiVo Inc., makers of digital video recorders, found that the E-Trade ad showing a baby talking about stock deals -- and spitting up at the end -- was the most-watched commercial during the game.

Counting in people who played back material on their DVRs, the commercials were watched by more people than the game, TiVo said.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Doritos ad with the giant mouse breaking through the wall. I thought that was really funny. The Bud ad with the Rocky theme was also really good, but most of them we all just kinda went "wtf was that?" Pretty disappointing overall.

That was one we talked about here at home last night. The problem with it (IMO) was that it's funny the first time you see it but it's blown after that.
The e-Trade spots, just for an example, have the potential to have a lot longer shelf life.

Two notes about commercials that were already mentioned:

1) I really could've done without the spitting up from the baby. Really.
2) I would've liked the Doritos commercial more if the guy had run out of chips in his bag. Then he could've been so desperate for one more bite that he would've grabbed the chip off the mousetrap and gotten stuck. I dunno, the whole "guy in a mouse suit" thing just didn't really click with me.

At our home, those two commercials were the consensus winners.

On my way to class today, they reviewed the top 10 and it was not on it and not much mention for it here, either.

That USA Today link is pretty cool... as the commercial plays, you see a graph of people's like/dislike reaction. You can see at exactly which points people react to an ad.

The best moment is probably the way the graph trends up when the car is about the run over Richard Simmons, then drops when the car swerves and misses him.

I hated the baby ones. enough with the fucking babies.

What made the mouse one so brilliant was that it was so obviously a mouse suit, like you could still see the seams and everything. It had a cheap, low-budget laugh to it.

I liked the nipple one only because it had Donkeylips in it.

Lifewater needed to pick a different internet meme than the thriller dance. Maybe if they had the lizards rick-roll us, it would have been great.

Far and away my favorite of the evening, got a good laugh from that one.

Not a real spectacular night of commercials overall though.

Not a surprise. I know plenty of people who don't give a crap about the game itself, but want to see the commericials. Its how the SuperBowl has become such a MEGA-event.

The Macy's Day Coke ad was my favorite. I also enjoyed the James Carville one, largely because I enjoyed seeing all the DC shout-outs.

The salesleads ones were straight up racist, however. I was shocked when I saw them.

Ya, I've heard a lot of that too, and maybe Super Bowl commercials are entertaining relative to other commercials, but to actually seek them out as stand-alone entertainment? Isn't there something you could get from Netflix instead?

You don't have to invest 2 hours to watch the commericals ;). Eat the food at the party during the game and then watch the commericals for the TV entertainment and back to the food.
