Out of the entire Garfield critical subculture that has bubbled to the surface over the past few years, I've found Lasagna Cat to be the funniest and most creative.

It's just funny to see Jon acting like some crazy wackjob, pretending there is someone there to talk to, but there isn't. It is funnier than non captioned Garfield because it is more amusing that he's talking to no one than him talking to his cat and expecting him to answer back.

I disagree. Garfield w/o thought bubbles & "Realfield" (above) are funnier because they are true to the comic strip--Garfield's "speech" is always presented in thought bubbles so, even in the reality of the strip, Jon wouldn't actually be aware of what Garfield is saying/thinking. It's not changing the events as they happen in the strip at all.

On a slight tangent, there just aren't that many newspaper comics that are consistently funny anymore. The only ones that still can generate laughs for me are Dilbert and Pearls Before Swine.

Well, there are a lot of strips that really really suck, but Garfield is the one to me that thinks it is the shit when it is just plain blows. I can't ever recall having laughed at one strip in my entire 38 years.

It works. It becomes an entirely different thing... a sort of existential comic which clearly sails over some people's heads (you'll recognize those people by their extreme adamance that it is in no way funny).

the above comic is not funny. its the comic strip version of people who want to believe that if you play Dark Side Of The Moon along with Wizard of Oz that it actually goes along. if that's the case you can inject humor into anything you want, why restrict yourself to a comic strip? find the humor in pics of mutilated fetuses. clearly some of you get a certain level of humor that us cavemen are missing. obviously punchlines are for us dumb people who need a laugh track to know when to laugh.

i'll concede the above example ct provided works in the sense that it can actually make sense unlike most of the other sans-Garfield strips. but it clearly isn't funny.basically you can take any comic that has 2 characters in it, remove one character and you're saying you'll still find it funny because the guy is now talking to himself. so the fact that the punchline or the ironic statement that normally ends a comic strip is missing means nothing, because whatever the guy was saying it now looks as if he's some crazy guy talking to himself or reacting to a 2nd character that isn't there, cuz that's what crazy people do. har dee har har.

I'm not sure that's true. I can't think of a single time when somebody explained a joke or an amusing situation to someone who hadn't found it funny, and made it plausibly funny. Humor when explained usually just sounds dumber.

Well first of all, Garfield in it's original form only has maybe three jokes, so it's not like you're losing much. I agree, there's basically only one joke, but that's true of a lot of humor. I mean literally, some people find Garfield funny even though it mostly consists of the jokes "this cat is fat," "this cat is lazy," "this guy is lame."

Still I wouldn't read these strips daily like I would an actual intentional comic strip that I liked, it's certainly one dimensional. But I don't agree that any strip would work the same if you removed one character. I think it would depend on the art work, and happenstance. Not all of the Garfields are funny without the cat, it's just that some of them are.

I think if you think the joke is "this guy is talking to himself" then you don't get the joke, that's all. I wouldn't say that's what's funny at all about it.

And I got in to huge fights here and elsewhere back when a bunch of teens thought it was "funny" to clog up the snow closing lists on the local TV stations with fake businesses to prove that the security was lax. Lots of people found it "funny", I found it a horrible abuse of a useful system.

Right, I'm not saying an explanation would make it funny to me, but it would at least make it somewhat apparent how or why they work as humor. I'm all for taking something and twisting it around for humorous effect. But to be funny to me, one of two things need to happen:

1) The end result should be funny in and of itself. The Jon comic above kind of achieves this (and is the only one of these so far that I thought was remotely funny).

OR

2) The characters or situations that we know from the original source material are so twisted around that we can laugh at how a simple change can produce such different results. The re-cut trailer of The Shining that was popular a while back comes to mind. Or this YouTube video:

To me, there's something fantastically absurd about them. But that's my sense of humor, absurdity. My user name is from Mr. Show, which is absurb comedy.

I think those people who enjoy absurd humor will get more of a kick out of these. It definitely isn't for everyone.

it's the same joke over and over. we get it - pumpy tudors is talking to himself.

you're not supposed to get it - Pumpy Tudors has 2 characters and you're only seeing one. how would you expect that to be funny or mean something? that's like watching The Sixth Sense without Bruce Willis, or watching When Harry Met Sally without Harry.

and you can tell the people who want to think they are superior because they can find humor where there is none. those are often the same people who get off listening to bands no one has heard of just so they can say they listen to bands that no one has heard of, which supposedly makes then more in the know and a better judge of art.


pumpy tudors is not funny. hes the comic strip version of people who want to believe that if you play Dark Side Of The Moon along with Wizard of Oz that it actually goes along. if that's the case you can inject humor into anything you want, why restrict yourself to pumpy tudors? find the humor in pics of mutilated fetuses. clearly some of you get a certain level of humor that us cavemen are missing. obviously punchlines are for us dumb people who need a laugh track to know when to laugh.

i'll concede the above example ct provided works in the sense that it can actually make sense unlike most of the other Pumpy Tudors posts. but it clearly isn't funny.basically you can take any post that has 2 characters in it, remove Pumpy Tudors and you're saying you'll still find it funny because the guy is now talking to himself. so the fact that the punchline or the ironic statement that normally ends a post is missing means nothing, because whatever the guy was saying it now looks as if he's some crazy guy talking to himself or reacting to Pumpy Tudors that isn't there, cuz that's what crazy people do. har dee har har.

Those are my top three newspaper comics of all time. I didn't find the Garfield stuff funny, but I did laugh at Marmaduke Explained.

I also think Pumpy is funny. HA is funny at times as well.

Yeah, the Garfield Randomizer has about a 10% success ratio on comedy. I think G-G is well over 50%.
