View Full Version : Primary Entrance to your house?

We primarily use a side entrance to our house, and guests use that as well. But I have a feeling that may be a regional thing, so I was just curious as to what others may use.

On the other hand, people in apartments probably all use the front (and possibly only) door.

I would change mine to the Front Door. The only other entrances to our house are through the garage or through the backdoor, which leads to a fenced in backyard.

Front door. I have an older house, and the garage, side door or back doors are all far more inconvenient than the front door is for guests or even us when we come and go. The only time we use a different door is when it snows, we'll go out the garage so no one slips going down the outside stairs.

I come in to my house through the garage, normally. Visitors are generally the same way. At least so far, anyway. The back door would be fine too, except it's been muddy and messy and it's easier to have them come through the garage because they don't track all that damn mud in the house.

Thats odd, delivery people and jehova's witnesses enter your house through the front door? Usually I open the door for the delivery people and take the food or product and pay them, they don't enter.
As for Jehova's witnesses, why the hell are they entering your house in the first place?

I actually don't have much problem understanding Mikevic's house layout. It sounds pretty similar to how most houses in my neighborhood are built. All of the houses here were built in the 1950s and all are pretty similar in style. Basically the original design of this house looks like it had a front door, and a garage and that is it. All of the rooms on the back of the house were the three bedrooms, none of which had a back yard.
Somewhere before I bought this house (1970s or 1980s I guess), someone added a sunroom on one side of the house and a larger living room to the other side of the house, both of which come with sliding glass doors going to the back yard now. If those additions hadn't been done, my house would have had no back door either, and I gurantuee there are probably at least 10 houses in my neighborhood like that.

Has anyone ever taken out a window cut out and installed french doors? Or is that a "pay the man" type of thing? I have a large picture window in our sunroom addition, but no in house exit to the back deck. The deck is pretty sweet in size, but it's a pain cause you have to walk around the side of the house to make use of it. Anyways, removing the window and cutting out the underneath of it to install a door to the deck is on the agenda this summer. But I'm not totally sure it's a DIY type thing.

I'm trying to even think of what neighborhoods might have a house like that. No backlane is relatively modern, so that rules a lot out, but not too modern because I can't imagine a house built in the last 10-15 years being designed that way.

I'm seriously trying to recall ever seeing a house with no back door but I'm coming up blank.
Virtually every house in my neighborhood that hasn't later been added-on to has no back door. All of the houses are cookie cutter post-WW2 homes that alot of troops came home from the war and ended up moving into with their families (baby-boomer era).
Almost without exception, they all are designed in halves, with the front half of the house having from left to right when facing the house The living room -> a tiny dining room -> Kitchen. The front door is stuck in between the living room and the dining room. The back half of the house has 3 bedrooms across the back with the bathroom being stuck between the kitchen and the back right bedroom.
My house is one of several that had modifications made in the 70s or 80s, where a much larger living room was added to the left side of the house and a sun room on the right side, both of which have the only back doors to my house. Any house in my neighborhood without add-ons would have no back door either.
I think its just a regional type of style of house, I never saw any homes like this in the south growing up.

Ok, so there's a street that's a semi-circle. There's houses on both sides of the semi-circle. And then there's a back lane going through the middle of the semi-circle.
No, if I had two basements then one would be a sub-basement.

When you walk in, the living room is right there. Then there's a small 3-step stair that goes to a hallway, and the first opening to the right is the kitchen. The kitchen overlooks the living room, so you can see the living room and front door if you're in the kitchen.
