The best marriages are those where women marry men who are less attractive than themselves, research has found.

Psychologists who studied newlyweds found men who were better-looking than their wives were more likely to be unhappy and have negative feelings about their marriage.

In couples where the wife is more attractive, both partners tended to be very content.

The research, published in the Journal of Family Psychology, suggests that, in evolutionary terms, women are less choosy about their man's looks as long as he is able to help them reproduce.

Men, however, are programmed to choose a mate who is most likely to pass on their genes and look for youth, health and physical attractiveness.

The tests involved 82 couples married within the previous six months.

I have no idea how I landed my wife. We met on a blind date set up by my sister. Probably a good thing as I would have likely never had a chance if she would have gone on looks alone in a public setting.

We're 8 years in now, which is probably longer than most marriages last.

So during the honeymoon period, guys that marry hot women are happier? Gee, there is a shock. Does anyone even really know what marriage is in the first 6 months? It usually takes much longer than that for initial bliss to fade and real-life routines to develop.

A serious side question.

One thing I hear a lot is that you have to you "work on your marriage". Should a marriage be work in that sense? I understand that a couple might have a disagreement now and then, but don't the ones who have a successful way have a way to comprise? Is this why divorce rates are so high?

What's the secret for those who have a long, successful marriage (even with kids, who take up a lot of time)?

I'm technically not married, but have been living with the same woman for just about 6 years. It is work, but it is not drudge work. Its simply paying attention, noticing how your partner changes or grows, and understanding that the relationship is not just about you, its a shared experience.

I think you have to put effort into paying attention to your partner's needs and wants. It's very easy to neglect someone or take them for granted, if you aren't careful, particularly after you have been together for a long time.

The good news for you EF27 is I'm guessing you don't have to fake not liking your wife's cooking. Sounds like you got it made in that department. :)

My wife and my secret is based on this: She goes to her moms with the kids one weekend a month. The away time lets me recharge my batteries and she gets family time.
But above all touch your wife a lot and let her vent to you. You dont have to listen, but pretend you are. Worked for 9 years and 2 kids so far.
