View Full Version : Comments On The Move. Issues To Resolve?

1. Thanks to everyone for your patience. It took longer than we'd hoped, because of the massive size of our database. Restoring it was a long and somewhat-painful process. (The db restoration actually caused a slowdown and partial shutdown of OS (http://www.operationsports.com/newspost.php?id=251442) for part of yesterday.) I hope the semi-regular updates were useful.

2. It looks like nearly everything is back to normal. I'll work on the smilies at lunchtime.

3. The problem with changing of skins is a javascript issue, at least partially. If you use Adblock and/or NoScript, make sure you don't have these two blocked:

http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/clientscript/vbulletin_global.js?v=360
http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/clientscript/vbulletin_menu.js?v=360

Unblocking those took care of that issue for me.

4. I felt like it was important to use the forum's e-mail functionality to notify non-regulars of the impending move and the completion thereof. I hope the two e-mails weren't too intrusive for the regulars.

5. No matter what we may have thought of IGN/Gamespy's service during the month-long outage of '04, I have nothing but positive things to say about their help with the move. After they got over the initial surprise, they were great. They broke with normal policy to give us an exact time to shut down the forums, and the full backup was in our hands less than 90 minutes after the time that we shut down yesterday. And, they worked with me to come up with a way agreeable to both parties so that we could keep the old forums on their servers for an extended period of time.

6. Major props also to OS. Their tech guys were very helpful, and of course their working to come up with a work-surfing IP solution will be huge for some people.

7. I'm unsticking it to avoid sticky-clutter, but everyone please vote in the skin thread. (http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/showthread.php?t=65663) We're probably going to eliminate some skins and restructure how they're set up, so I need to know which ones are used. (They won't look any different, but they'll be much easier to mod.)

There appears to be a problem with the links that are sent in emails. They don't correspond with the correct information. They go to the right topics but they aren't going to the correct "New Post".

Will you re-check this now?

FYI......You might want to correct the alternate link in the sticky. I went to 75.126.153.96/forums and couldn't find any way to reach this board. I finally just guessed that it might be 75.126.153.96/fofc and was able to find the board.

In another thread, someone had mentioned that links from email don't work. What I think they meant is that the links that end in "goto=newpost" don't work. I noticed it this morning. Basically, the little arrows that let you go to the newest post in the thread that you have read are resetting themselves. Those arrows point to the same place where people get email links if they are subscribed to threads. Maybe this is a one time thing that happened last night. But this morning when I opened my browser, all my newpost markers reset back to where they were a couple of days ago.

This is going to be a pain, but I think we need to figure out a way to do a search and replace in all threads to change 'http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/' to 'http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/' in threads to preserve links. I noticed that in the reference threads those links send you back to GameSpy.

I haven't read through everything so forgive me if this has been brought up... I'm finding that the site doesn't remember me being logged in, even if I ask it to. This worked on the old site. I'm thinking it might have something to do with accidentally going to the old site first almost every time I come here (damn old habits), but was wondering if anyone else gets this?

Each site will have separate cookies, so it should not matter if you visit the gamespy site before this one.

It would be interesting to know if there are any other people suffering with this problem.

Will the front page be moving eventually, or will the OS link always head straight to the board?

Ben E Lou

We had very low usage of the front page, even when we were doing things to try to keep it updated on a fairly regular basis, so my thinking is that we should just send people straight to the forums.

It would be interesting to know if there are any other people suffering with this problem.

I'm also having this problem even though I checked the remember me option. Logged in on my dinner hour after being on in the early morning and had to sign in. After work I had to sign in again. Then got called to supper and did not disconnect. Came back and woke up the computer to continue here and had to sign in again.

It worked fine on the old site and I don't have the problem on any of my other bookmarked forums ie OOTP, SI, Wolverine, etc or my regular Operation Sports account.

FWIW I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.14.

Ben E Lou
06-06-2008, 05:53 PM
Sweed, are you coming in the same way every time? I find that when I switched between operationsports.com, osatwork.com, and the IP address, it doesn't remember me. But when I stick with the same option, it does remember me.

Yeah, I only log in from home. I bookmarked the page the first time I was here using the link posted on the old board.

Perhaps I should try deleting any cookies and try from scratch?

How do I explain this?

When I visit the site, lets say there are 40 threads I haven't read, I read the ones I want to.. lets say 20 of them. When I leave the forum and then come back an hour or so later, it used to show me only the new threads that had new posts in them as ones I haven't looked at and would mark the rest of the ones.. even if I didn't look at them, as looked at (unless there were new posts since my last visit).

Is there some setting that was changed?

I just tested this, and noticed that if I entered this forum through the link at the gamespy site I was asked for my user details. It may have something to do with the URL on the link. Can you test if it works properly when you directly access this site rather than going through gamespy?

In another thread, someone had mentioned that links from email don't work. What I think they meant is that the links that end in "goto=newpost" don't work. I noticed it this morning. Basically, the little arrows that let you go to the newest post in the thread that you have read are resetting themselves. Those arrows point to the same place where people get email links if they are subscribed to threads. Maybe this is a one time thing that happened last night. But this morning when I opened my browser, all my newpost markers reset back to where they were a couple of days ago.

I've been getting the majority of mine within 5-15 minutes the last few days. At least in a decent timeframe where part of the delay probably is attributed to my email client going out to check for new mail every so often.

I haven't received any PMs today though, so not sure if something is up with their mail servers today, I just know the other day I was getting them fine.
