I've always thought that one of these movies was fantastic, the other a piece of crap that couldn't hold the other's jock. Which one do you think is better?

I have no opinion, but I have a feeling I know which one Kodos likes.

I've probably bitched about it on this board in the past. :)

I chose Gladiator, but, really, it's very close. I can watch either of these any time (and usually do, when I find them on TV).

I thought both were pretty good, but I think Gladiator gets too much of a bad rap from some.

Gladiator was too 'pretty' in my opinion. Not a bad movie, but, just too 'pretty'. So my vote goes for Bravehart since it's less 'pretty'.

Braveheart is in my top 5 of all time, while Gladiator is enjoyable, but not epic like Braveheart is

I just noticed that Gladiator is 43rd on the EW top 100 of the last 25 years, while Braveheart didnt make the list

Mel Gibson has basically taken away any chance he's ever is on such lists.

Gladiator was fantastic, if you pay attention to the character. I loved the Maximus character. Reminds me a lot of Belisarius/Raj from the various David Drake novels spun off that same basic storyline.

I've watched Braveheart once, and it was okay, but mostly pretty "meh".

Love them both, but I went with Gladiator. Mostly just a time period thing, Ancient Rome has always intrigued me.

Gladiator wanted to be Braveheart, but wasn't. I haven't watched Braveheart in a while and fear the Gibson craziness would taint it, but it's stil la much better movie.

Despite the fact I think Gladiator is a pretty awful movie, whenever Maximus asks the question: "ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?" I always have to respond, "Yeah, I kind of am."

I watched Braveheart for the first time in a couple years just a few weeks ago. Still the tremendous movie I thought it was then.

Doesn't Stamford Bridge need..uh....a bridge? Braveheart is okay, but I prefer Gladiator. My wife just told me she's never seen Gladiator, so we'll watch that tonight.

On a totally random side note, for about 2 or 3 years, the Colts opening before player introductions was the play the battle chant portion of Braveheart to get the crowd pumped up. My dad would always make the comment that they eventually lost. This season the Colts replaced it with the 300...another group that eventually lost. :D

I never got around to watching Gladiator. I liked Braveheart a lot, but I was pretty young when I watched it. I think I'll watch both soon.

Agreed. But it certainly helped the Renaissance Faires all over the country

RendeR

They really aren't comparible directly. braveheart is about a man that started a revolution and a group of menthat follwed him. Gladiator is about a single man and his path to revenge.

Neither movie is true to history enough to be called historicaly accurate, neither movie is realistic enough to say it gives you a real feel for the time period.

They're both just entertainment and if I have to choose between them i choose Gladiator because Russel Crowe would beat the living shit out of Mel Gibson even after a 3 week bender.

"My name is Maximus Desimus Meridius, husband to a murdered wife, father to a murdered son and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

braveheart is great

gladiator is okay

and I say this as a history major with a much stronger ancient-rome bent than scottish-bent

then again i'm biased because my ancestor on my father's side was one of wallace's chief lieutenants:

Sir John Graham

Sir John de Graham was a Scottish soldier, born in the lands of Dundaff, in the late 13th century. He opposed the English attempt to impose their rule on Scotland, fighting alongside Sir William Wallace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Wallace), whose friend and right-hand man he was considered. This made later Scots consider him a great patriot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot), though the term did not yet exist in Graham's own time. The poet Blind Harry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Harry) wrote of "’Schir Jhone the Grayme", writing of his bravery and noble death in the battle of Falkirk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkirk) in 1298, when the Scottish forces were routed under Edward I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_I_of_England) of England's stronger force of cavalry. Sir John's gravestone and effigy can be found even today in Falkirk Old Church, reading "Here lyes Sir John the Grame, baith wight and wise, Ane of the chiefs who rescewit Scotland thrise, Ane better knight not to the world was led, Nor was gude Graham of truth and hardiment".

I still enjoy watching Braveheart even though I have a very hard time differentiating Mel the very talented actor/director from Mel the irretrievable anti-Semite.

I still do not understand the allure of Gladiator. To many it is one of the greatest films ever. To me, it has so many plot holes and other assorted screwups that it is virtually unwatchable.

RomaGoth
06-23-2008, 10:15 AM
I actually enjoy both of them, but Braveheart is by far the better of the two. Gladiator needs less "filler" and more plot.

And yes, "The Patriot" sucks.

I'm in the group that enjoys both of them. I have them both on DVD and they're both very entertaining, but I think Braveheart is the slightly better film.

I've never seen Braveheart and that makes me feel dirty (I just added to to my Netflix queue)

I loved Gladiator the first time around but the dialogue hasn't help up on re-watch. It's a tad cringe-worthy.

Both are good, but not great movies. I will say that Russell Crowe winning the Oscar over Tom Hanks in Castaway was one of the more ridiculous calls the Academy has made in recent memory.

I think Braveheart does a much better job of giving you a feel for the overall battle, whereas in Gladiator, it seemed like just cutting between short battle scenes that were not connected. Shot A: Man get decapitated; Shot B: Man gets stabbed through the chest; Shot C: Man gets spear in back.

Braveheart is getting 73% of the actual votes. Case closed. Gladiator loses. :)

i think braveheart is a bad movie

mel gibsons character was ridiculous. usually when men write for women, they write "the perfect woman". the writer, who incidentally is a descendant of wallace's, did that for the wallace character. made him a man who is just ridiculously good at everything. hes the smartest, best warrior, and sleeps with every single woman he meets in the film.

also, he is incredibly old to be playing that part.

gladiator i didnt like in the theater, but its been slowly gaining on me. id pick that over braveheart.
