View Full Version : "Borat" strikes again, with his new character

Lured by $1 beer and the prospect of "hot chicks" and "hardcore fights," thousands of Arkansans were duped last month into appearing as extras in comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's latest staged mayhem. Cohen and his confederates organized cage fighting programs on consecutive days in Texarkana and Fort Smith. Both cards ended with two male grapplers (one was identified as "Straight Dave" and wore camouflage) tearing each other's clothes off and, while in underwear, kissing down their opponent's chest. This man-on-man action triggered Fort Smith fans to throw chairs and beer at the ring, according to one cop present at the city's Convention Center.

One of my friends said it best. "Sacha Baron Cohen is a performance artist, and mindfucks are his medium"

This was probably for a movie about one of his other characters, "Bruno".

Yeah, it's for a Bruno movie that's slated for next year I believe.
Surprisingly it's been big news down here the past 24 hours or so. I've had it e-mailed to me quite a few times.

You know, if some of these assholes had watched "The Ali G Show" at some point in their lives, they wouldn't be fazed at all by Bruno.

Heck, I watched Da Ali G Show during its original broadcast in the UK.
Even caught the Ali G movie, In Da House. :)
Bruno is one hell of a character, can't wait for that movie.

He's going to be killed.
You'd have to guess that he has some hefty bodyguards with him. Or maybe since cameras are present, people know they will be on film and prosecuted easier.

I have a pretty warped sense of humor. I like the family guy. I like pretty much any British comedy put in front of me. I like tasteless humor, sarcastic humor, witty humor. . . from Blazing Saddles to the humor in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers I laugh at just about everything I see.
This? I don't really get it. You take a bunch of people, offer them one thing and then give them another? Then you wait for them to get angry? Wow. Thrilling. What's next? Promising Canadians a free hockey ticket with lots of beer and watching them get upset when they see a gay version of the ice capades?
Yippee. So funny. Let's laugh at all of the redneck hicks and pretend we'd be thrilled if someone had wasted our time.
Am I getting old or am I the only guy in the world who doesn't see the humor in this?

So if you call it "comedy", you can get away with fraud?

My wife is the same way. She hated Borat because she said he was being rude to all of those people.
I still thought it was funny, but I absolutely see her point.

I'm in the same boat...I watched Borat and didn't think it was all that funny. To me, there's a difference between good comedy and being rude for the sake of being "irreverent".

If they were promised these things and got them, why would some man-on-man kissing at the end suddenly make it fraud?
I think the idea is funny but I also see how some folk would feel the opposite.

With Borat and now this, Cohen is approaching comedy from a similar angle as Andy Kaufman did -- inhabiting a role so completely that others start to take it at face value. Then, you watch the reaction. It is as much a social commentary as it is comedy.

When you put it like that you have a point...
I don't think the humor is simply in "being rude" though. Have you ever been to a stuffy stockholders meeting or something and wondered what would happen if a a big fat naked guy and and foreign guy with a mustache barged in and started fighting down the aisles? Probably not. But I think about stuff like that all the time. I wish the world was more interesting and crazier, more unexpected shit happened. I think that's what he's tapping into.
That's why I like shows like Trigger Happy TV and Jackass and The Tom Green Show to a lesser degree. Trigger Happy TV is one of my all time favorites. Borat is just stupid.

Sure. I get the "rude" humor thing when there is a point to it. Remember Michael Moore and TV Nation? One time he took a semi and trailer with the Russian flag on the back. He then drove it through the South and filmed reactions of people in diners as they looked at the truck.
I laughed. I thought it was funny. Nobody got hurt, it didn't waste anyone's time. Keep in mind, I HATE Michael Moore, but I thought that was brilliant and looking at some of the expressions on patrons faces was amusing and it also had an underlying point.
I just don't see what's amusing about this OR the point being made. He's filming a reaction that's 100% expected. Gee, people who like MMA and beer are going to get rowdy when they see gays? GASP. SHOCK. WOW. Lets tell teens that there is an acid metal concert and give em folk music. That'll sure show how stupid those guy are. HEHEHE
Obviously, a lot of people love the guy and he makes a gigantic payday doing what he does. Humor is different for all of us, so I'm not offended anyone likes it Hell, I'm just happy I'm not the only one who doesn't get it.
I thought redneck was racist???????

Now that I think about it, I'm not sure I'm on board with the idea of misrepresenting an event just to lure certain people to it. I mean, I'm not offended by it or anything. It just seems like the dude is dropping down a level or two with his schtick. This idea isn't nearly as good as when he got the "Bruno" character onto the sidelines at an Alabama football game and cheered with the cheerleaders. At the same game, he interviewed RB Shaud Williams and tried to get Williams to say that football locker rooms were full of gays.
I guess I like Sacha Baron Cohen's characters best when they're crashing other people's parties, not when they set up their own gig and intentionally draw the "wrong crowd" to it.

The only time I've ever found Sacha Baron Cohen funny was when was the King of the Lemurs.

I quite enjoyed his rendition of "Throw the Jew Down the Well" in an Arizona bar. The people singing along with him made it a classic.

The thing about Borat to me is that it's more than just making a bunch of people look stupid. There is a deeper reason behind why he does what he does IMO.
But yeah, I find it funny as hell anyhow.
