From ESPN (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3481361):

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones faces a felony drug charge in his former college town after police say officers found him cutting up cocaine with a credit card Thursday morning.

The 25-year-old Jones and two other former Arkansas football players were inside a Toyota SUV in Fayetteville just after 12:40 a.m. Thursday when officers approached. Officers saw a card covered in a white powder in Jones' lap as he used a credit card to scrape it, a police report said.

Officers opened the door and ordered Jones to put his hands in the air. According to the report, Jones kept his left hand out of view, forcing at least one officer to draw his handgun.

Jones, 25-year-old Jared Hicks and 26-year-old Benjamin Cook were arrested. Officers say they searched the vehicle and found a plastic bag filled with a white substance that tested positive for cocaine and a jar with possible marijuana residue.

Officers questioned Jones and he acknowledged the white powder was cocaine, the report said.

The team was waiting to learn details of the case before commenting.

the best part is you can lump this on top of the news reports that Weaver is negotiating the sale of the team to a guy who would then entertain ideas of moving the team to another city, ie. LA. Of course those involved deny that negotiations are occurring.

There was a reason he was a 5th round pick, and that reason is exactly what happened. I think he had negative value to the team, so I don't care if he was a UDFA. It was still a stupid move by Jimmy. What really bugs is that he took chances on guys like Collins and Demetrius Underwood, but he stayed away from Randy Moss.

Ummmm, no, actually it isn't. If an officer sees a guy with an open bottle of Jack driving down the road and doesn't stop him, I'm going to sue the living hell out of the police department if my family van gets slammed into.

If the officer sees someone snorting lines of coke and does nothing, I'm doing the same thing.

Three Scenarios for you:

1) Your family van is slammed into by a guy whose accelerator got stuck.
2) Your family fan is slammed into by a guy who just robbed a bank and is trying to get away before the police show up.
3) Your family van is slammed into after an officer watched the driver snort cocaine or drink alcohol and chose to do nothing.

In all three cases the family van is smashed into and there is probably people dead or maimed. You're right, nothing changes that.

But there are things that change your outlook of what happened. In the first case it's a freak accident. Horribly sad, but one of those things that just happens. In the second case, you have the robbers to blame. The third could have been prevented by a paid public servant doing his job correctly.

If you hate the anti drug laws, that's fine. Please write a long, loving note to a politician explaining why you think it's A-OK for cocaint to be legalized and that anyone on cocaine should also be allowed to operate a motor vehicle. If you get enough people supporting your position, the law will be changed.

Until then, I'm pretty thankful for people like the police officer who did his job and made sure the residents of Arkansas didn't have to take a chance on dealing with the what ifs.

This is the only thing that matters. My perspective is that it's fucked up.

As soon as we get into all this prevention shit, that's when I have problems. Using driving as a specific example, if someone's swerving all over the road, speeding, drinking openly or whatever; that's obviously a problem. If they're not doing those things, it's not. It doesn't matter WHY someone is driving recklessly, only that they are.

Getting back to Jones, I don't care that he's a cokehead, but I do care that he's sucked as an NFL receiver because he was on my fantasy team last year.

So doing something that could potentially lead to something horrible should never be looked at? A doctor with a known drug problem is OK until he slips up and kills a patient? It's OK for your daughter to get into a car with a drunk boyfriend, because hey, maybe he drives good drunk and until he starts swerving, it's all good?

I cannot believe someone is seriously supporting the notion that a cop should walk by the guy in the drivers seat of a parked vehicle, see that he's using cocaine and just walk on by. It may be the single dumbest take I've ever read on a message board. (and that's saying something, I've read IMTG say Charles was better than Adrian Pederson, I'm still spinning over that one)

According to the first post, the cops wandered over to what was (apparently) a parked car. No idea why they did that as there's no context.

Your hypothetical questions are horrible.

They wandered over to a parked car where it looked like something was going on. I know this will be a shock to you, but three people typically don't sit in the corner of a parking lot in Arkansas in JULY.

My hypothetical questions my be indeed be horrible. But no more horrible than your idiotic "if they aren't swervin, it's all good" attitude. I'm still stunned at your response to Ksyrup. To each his own I guess. I'll say one more time I'm damned happy the cops did their jobs here. They caught people violating the law and arrested them. They also prevented said people from driving away. You can find criticism in the police if you want to. I'm going to applaud them in this instance.

No. The violation is why is going to jail. The booking when he was taken in to serve this was the original cocaine charge.

edit: to clarify, some stories, including the one on ESPN.com, appear to display confusion in that the charge is possession of a controlled substance instead of failing the test, but when he was brought in and booked, the charge he was booked on was the original charge, not a new one. It's the same charge as before, he is just serving time because he violated the terms of the drug program he was in by drinking while playing golf.
