Anyone getting one of these tomorrow. I'm hoping both my wife and I will be able to get ours tomorrow. We held off on getting the first ones, and I'm going to be a complete hypocrite since I usually denounce Apple, but I really want one now. A lot of the stuff the iPhone does are things I already do with my current phone (Browse, Gmail, Reader, Maps) but it does it so much better.
I'm just hoping the supply is going to be good enough so we can get two 16 GB ones tomorrow.

On my bus ride in, I saw a bunch of people lined up outside a strip mall. At first, I thought there was some giveaway at the Starbucks in it, then I realized they were all lined up outside the at&t store next to it. I'd say about 50 people were in line.

People must be much richer than I am to be able to afford a $1000/year cell phone bugdet. I think I spend about $100/year on my cell phone and that's about as much as I'm willing to pay.

Priorities. I'm in the same boat as you, but I'd imagine that most people *could* spend $1000 per year on it if they cared about it more than other things.

Dola,
I'm going to get one, just not today. The iPhone Dev Team has announced they've already jailbroken the 2.0 software, but I'm going to wait and see how well it works. I've gotten used to running some stuff on my current iPhone that only works after it is jailbroken.

I'm in as soon as I can get one. Probably will start looking in earnest tomorrow. Not interested in waiting in line for one.
I'm going to cancel a business line coming into our house, and get rid of my existing cell phone. The iPhone monthly charges will end up costing me just a bit more than my current charges, but the iPhone will do more.

A friend of mine went to pick one up today at about 7:30am and found out most stores around here only have between 20-40 phones. After that they are taking preorders and those people get first dibs when more phones come in.

Well one reason we can splurg to get something like this is that I get free cable TV already and only pay 20 bucks a month for phone service at our home. One of the nice benefits of working for the cable company.

I've got an iTouch ipod and because of that wouldn't touch an iPhone with a bargepole.
The UI is horrible to utilise compared to a normal iPod and I'd expect the same to be the case on the iPhone, simply put having proper buttons to press makes things a lot more reliable and easier to use.
(or put it this way - I prefer to borrow my wifes old-style iPod when I go to the gym)

Sounds like the launch is a complete mess. iTunes server has been down worldwide, so people can't activate.
I tried calling a nearby AT&T store from a land line, but the reception was all garbled, then it switched to a busy signal. I tried calling again but only got a dead line. Great quality for a mobile phone company.
Glad I didn't get up early to wait in line. I'll wait until next week to start looking.

So I got 2 iPhones yesterday. Stood in line for 5 hours at the Apple Store. My wife really wanted one after she saw all the cool stuff it could do when I was checking it out for myself and with our anniversary coming up I thought it would be a nice little early 2 year anniversary gift. Was well worth the 5 hour wait, I didn't really get bored I was standing by a some people that were fun to talk to.

I didn't catch most of the thread, but I have an iPhone 2.0. And by that, I mean I have a first gen iPhone with the 2.0 firmware. The only thing you gain with the 3G is faster cellular internet speed (meh) and a haphazard GPS (can't even give you turn-by-turn directions).
The new apps show a lot of promise, especially some of the games. There's an app I am waiting to be released which essentially allows you to "bookmark" where you parked your car. This will be VERY nice.

I can get the iPhone for $199 and my work will pick-up the data package but I'm waiting. The other guys in my department just unpacked theirs and I'm going to let them 'eff about with the thing to see if I want to plop down $200 just to be able to be more accessible with off hours email.
I currently have the sony-ericsson walkman (for which I paid $170 a year or more ago - ouch - I wanted a phone/mp3 player and this phone sucks ass) and that allows me to at least not be emailed to death while I'm at home. I'll probably cave, but I'm a stubborn fuck.

I just saw this though...
http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/14/apple-says-turn-by-turn-gps-coming-to-iphone-copy-paste-not-a/
There's been a lot of random misinformation about the iPhone 3G floating around out there, like David Pogue's baffling comment that the device's GPS antenna is "too small" to support turn-by-turn directions, and Apple's iPod and iPhone marketing head Greg Joswiak recently sat down with AppScout to clear up some of the confusion. Greg says that Apple has an internal priority list of features for the iPhone, and that the company went as far down the list with the 3G as it could -- and that copy / paste support simply didn't make the cut. Similarly, there are no technical issues preventing turn-by-turn directions, just other "complicated issues" (read: legal agreements) that need to be sorted out, and Josiwak expects developers to "amaze us." as things "evolve." Hopefully that means that nav app TomTom's got in the labs will evolve its way into the wild sometime soon. Finally, Joswiak said that he's not aware of any technical reasons an office suite isn't already in the App Store, but that the lack of a cross-application file structure could impede development. Yeah, and maybe the lack of copy / paste, you think?

That's bullshit if they've said that (which I haven't seen, sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I'd love to be proven wrong). There are plenty of phones out there, not to mention, you know, GPS devices, that give turn-by-turn GPS directions.

Yeah, that sounds much more plausible. Basically, they don't have licensing to turn-by-turn software or haven't written their own or are waiting for someone like TomTom to come out with a version or something to that affect. I have a much easier time believing that. And, personally, I love the TomTom software and if they created something for the iphone it would work great (although I doubt it would be innovative in any way -- probably the same as the Pocket PC version). But the whole idea that they don't want trouble from law enforcement is just absurd. Phone GPSes (like TomTom on a Pocket PC) typically just have a warning that you have to accept that says you're paying attention to the road, essentially.

I really, really want one but I can't afford one right now. When I actually sat down and crunched the numbers, I found that I can't afford that very high premium for the course of the two year contract for what is ultimately a luxury item. I compared the costs associated with the iPhone over the life of its contract in a blog post here (http://technicity.wordpress.com/2008/07/02/i-love-the-3g-iphone-but-i-wont-be-getting-one/).
It sounds like prospective buyers have to be careful--the cost structure will be the same whether your calling area has 3G service or not. The premium for this phone can be justified if you have active 3G in you area (and is a pretty fair price for high speed data), but perhaps not so much if AT&T data in your area is spotty.
The reviews say that call quality is light years ahead of the original iPhone, so perhaps that may be some incentive to buy the 3G version anyway (with the hope that the 3G network is eventually built out more).

I believe you would need to sign a "new" two year contract. It sounds like in the second option you would just "add" two more years to your exciting contract/plan and I don't believe you can do that with any of the AT&T iPhone plans.

Today, my son was going to the pool with some friends, as always, he took his phone...as always I told him to set it on the table when he went in the water. About 20 minutes after he left he comes home with a look of total fear on his face and holds out the phone to me - it's dripping wet and there is a puddle of water in the screen. He forgot it was in his swim suit pocket when he jumped in the water, it was in there for "2 or 3 minutes" until he realized it. Took it apart and it's now sitting on the bathroom counter and he is kissing some serious ass to avoid being in a heap of trouble. This is why he gets a $20 Virgin Mobile phone and not a "real" (his word) phone.

The screen on the iPhone is absolutely amazing, though I can't abide the little keyboard in portrait mode (fingers are too big). I'm mainly getting this for the exchange interoperability.
I was considering getting a new iPod anyway and they aren't cheap. I'm going on vacation next week and my phone isn't likely to come in until monday. Oh well.
Seeing the iPhone 3G in action is the only thing that pushed me over the edge. For all my dislike of Apple, they do a lot of things right and even though I'm discovering the limitations (vicariously at the moment), I think I'll be able to get over them.

I picked up an iPhone while I was in Seattle and I love it. It just can do an amazing amount of things. I havent ventured outside of the free apps yet, but so far I really like BoxOffice, SportsTap, Pandora, AOL Radio and midomi. Havent had a chance to try out a lot of the others. Id like to hear some other recommendations on apps. The only thing I can say Im not fond of so far is iTunes itself. It just seems a bit slow and annoying. That may change as I get used to it as I have never used iTunes before.
As far as hacking it goes, a friend has done it and says its pretty easy and harmless. It allows you to change a few cosmetic things and add a few other programs like nintendo roms. Its still new so not a ton of things available right now. I dont think it limits the iPhones functions in any way. The only thing I have heard is right now you need a mac to do it. If he brings his MacBook home from work today I will probably try it out on my phone.

I really like the Shazam program. It will tell you the artist and title of pretty much every song out there. All you do is turn the program on and put your phone up to the speaker. I use it to tag music to download when I get home.

Grrr. Seems that you can only use 1 PC with iTunes? I have my stuff synch'd with my work PC. My understanding is that if I want to add pics from home, if I hooked it up to iTunes there it will delete all my music and whatnot that i've added.
Is there a way to use multiple versions of iTunes?

Texas Hold Em is a great game for the price as well ($4.99).
Agreed. When you look at this game and the rest of the games currently out there it's night and day. This one actually looks like a game you would play on today's computers. Most of the rest look like games that you'd play on your old Commodore 64 of Vic 20. I mean seriously, Pong!?
$4.99 is about right price wise as well. No way would I pay $9.99 or more for a game on my iPhone that some are asking.

There are programs out there that will copy everything off you iPod and put it into iTunes. I can't remember the one I used a couple of years ago, but I think it cost around $15.

I read online that the "exchange push" has about a 15 minute delay and is NOT instantaneous. Are you finding this to be the case?the push is not bad at all. When you have push off, it can take 15 mins.

Unless I'm misunderstanding, you can use as many PC's as you want. You just have to turn off auto-syncing (which is on by default) in Itunes.

Yeah, turn off auto-syncing and also turn off syncing in everything that you dont want(everything but photos in that case).

How safe and easy was it? Also how did you do it and what advantages will it have?
It was pretty easy for me to do on my PC. Only advantages I really see right now are being able to pretty up the Iphone to your liking. Not much in the software category at this time, but it's a cinch to install software after jailbreaking (with Cydia).

Well, I just installed iTunes at home and in order to add 1 song to my iPhone it wants to erase everything on the phone and replace it with the play lists on this PC. It makes no sense at all. I just want to add 1 song here at home.

Steve Jobs Confirms iPhone Has a Kill Switch - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20080811/bs_nf/61270)
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that the iPhone 3G has a kill switch that can remotely remove software from the devices.
Jobs told The Wall Street Journal that Apple needs the capability in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program -- such as an application that steals user's personal data -- to be distributed to iPhones through its App Store.
"Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull," Jobs said.

I'm starting to wonder about mine...
I noticed a call yesterday that went straight to voicemail instead of ringing.
It took about ten minutes for a text message to get to me last night.
There have been several times when I can't get any data at all. I was in a book store last night and the phone kept switching from 3G to Edge, and I couldn't get anything. Other times I can't get any data connection at all.
But call quality has been good, and I have yet to drop a conversation.
I'm happy with it so far on the whole, as it's definitely a neat device, but these little things are starting to get a bit annoying. I've dropped my land line for the iPhone, so I need reliability.

I'd agree with ls. We have gen 1s as well and they're great. We were going to get my oldest son an iphone for his birthday but decided to wait until Christmas because I read somewhere that the next iphones will be a true 2.0 and last year's new model is really a 1.1 version.

Yeah, I wanted to wait but my Blackberry crapped out and my contract was over with Sprint. It was either by a new phone through Sprint or move somewhere else. If the new iPhone turns out to be great, I'll probably pick it up at the end of the year. I never trust the newest versions as they always seem to have some issues.

People "Say" that, but I'm not sure what they're talking about. I had no problems with my gen1. No one I know had problems with their 3g. [shrug]

I hate to admit it but I couldn't live a day without this phone. I would definitely be up to trying another phone but it is going to have to give hand jobs or something like that for me to switch.
I hate Apple but this phone is awesome. Looking forward to 3.0! And if only I could sync my music with Winamp like I do for my iPod. :(
Apple doesn't do everything right (iTunes!) but for the vast majority of things, it just works the way you think it should.

I've read that many problems people have been having with the iPhone aren't really phone-related (and many were apparently rectified via firmware updates early on). But it does sound like there were/are some issues with AT&T's network capacity--there is suspicion that some of the issues people have been experiencing (frequent dropped calls, spotty 3G/slow data speeds, etc), are due to issues with the network not being built up adequately, especially in places like Manhattan where there are high concentrations of data users.

That's where I'm at right now. I'm having real spotty reception with it and voices are coming across pixelated. Have read on some forums that this is a rather common occurence in parts of Chicago (tough to get a true gauge with the Apple fanboys out there). I called support and they want me to get a new SIM card. I have an odd feeling that this won't fix anything.
The phone as a piece of electronics is great. It's a shame that the network is so shotty. Going to try the SIM card and then probably move on back to Sprint where I never had issues with calls.

So my headphone jack has been acting up on my iPhone and I decided to stop into the Apple store since I was in Ann Arbor on Saturday. Man, I cant remember such a bad customer experience. Just horrible. Honestly, I love my phone but I doubt I want to ever give Apple any business again. Hopefully other stores are ran differently than that one.

I have had nothing but great experience with Apple Customer Service. They gave me a new iphone when my first one was dropped too many times and the bottom half of the touch screen stopped working. They fixed my motherboard in a day when it was overheating on my macbook. They gave me a new battery when mine wasn't holding a charge like it used to. They replace my thing that surrounds the keyboard everytime I take it in. They're always nice, helpful, and responsive.

Yeah I have to agree with Lordscarlet, I have always had Apple support and the local Apple store go above and beyond - but with any store chain, there's always a possibility that there's a few bad ones.
