View Full Version : Common Sense regarding Privacy

I believe there are a couple of members here who have my phone number and home address. I would hope it would be common sense to ask me first before giving that out.

(There is some legal stuff going on with some distant relatives that I am trying to stay out of.)

By the way, this is a serious thread. My name is common enough that a google search isn't that helpful, but it would point to this board in the first couple of pages.

Ok I'll stop kidding around. I don't have your number.

What works well in this situation is cash.

And don't go throwing around the blackmail word. Then everyone will have your address and think you are racist too.

I think this would be common sense, too. I wouldn't ever give someone's number out randomly.

I do understand your concern, though. There's one person here that knows how geeky I was in junior high, and I'd rather not let that get out.

Lorena

It's common sense not to give anyone's number, physical or email address. If anyone asks me for so-and-so's info, I'd check with this person before giving out any info.

st.cronin
07-11-2008, 02:31 PM
I agree its common sense but there are some devious and crafty people involved in this. And those people can afford pretty good lawyers, too.

By the way, I never did figure out how Lorena got my address.

Just curious ... do you have reason to believe someone here has given out your number and address? From your postings here, I would give you enough credit to know that if someone wanted to find you, there are much places to do that than tracking you through a message board. I don't know your name but I'd be willing to bet that you give me an hour I could probably track you down, and if I were willing to plunk down a couple of dollars I could find you even faster.

Privacy is an illusion. If someone really wants to find you, they'll find you.

Agreed. Unless you have paid extravagantly and intelligently for your privacy, and probably broken some federal and state laws to do so, you are easy to find. Heck, I know enough about you that I could probably find you in Lexis Nexis in 5 minutes, and that's a program used by bureaucrats, civil servants, financial people, information systems people, law enforcement and legal professionals--in other words--like 30% of the working population (at least).

And then there's Net Detective.

Seriously, though, I hope you don't get drawn into whatever you're trying to avoid, and if it is attempted, bite the bullet and tell them to leave you the fuck alone. ;)

I hope the next time I move I get a real easy phone number. Something like 222-2222. I would say, "Sweet." People would say, "Mitch, how do I get a hold of you?" I would say, "Just press 2 for a while, and when I answer, you will know that you have pressed 2 enough."

No reason to believe anything like that has happened, and I agree with what you are saying. I just got a little creeped out yesterday, and went into paranoid mode. In retrospect, this is probably a silly thread.
