Who's going to pimp the ACC now that Packer is out? FWIW.......Kellogg is a very solid choice.

Great day for college basketball. Billy Packer is a legendary broadcaster and deserves acclaim for that, but he's been going downhill for the last 10 years and is absolutely worthless now. Good riddance.

Wow, I have never seen such universal celebration over someone getting canned. Both talk radio stations here in KC were rejoicing, and I have had two people bring it up with me at work talking about what great news it was. I don't know if any of us truly appreciated how much Packer was despised outside the ACC.

Um, he wasn't exactly lauded in the ACC a whole lot at times, either. He's probably cheesed off every single fanbase in the conference at one point or another in the last several years, so don't chalk his staying power to being an ACC homer.

Yeah, I think everyone in the ACC hated him too. I know I did.

Dear god yes.
I was discussing this with a Duke fan, Maryland fan, and Virginia fan that I chat with frequently, and myself of course a UNC fan, and all of us were equally thrilled to not have to listen to him in the NCAA Tournament anymore.

Duke fans are happy? It seems like he always wanted to make sweet love to the Dukies.

Kellogg isn't terrible but they should have hired Jay Bilas and Gus Johnson

I'm a UNC fan and not a Duke fan, but I'm as happy to see him go *because* of his homerism. Look at mizzou's first comment in the thread, its not about how bad his announcing has become, its a dig at my beloved ACC. Just like I fully believe ESPN's usage of Bill Simmons and their treatment of Boston in general has a lot to do with the vitriol spewed towards Boston fans, I believe people like Packer escalate the dislike of the ACC in college basketball beyond where it would be without him.

I think you're thinking about Dick Vitale. As of late, Billy Packer hated everyone.

And here I thought it would have been easier to just get rid of the ACC ;)

It was time.
To me, it wasn't that Packer's commentary on games was inaccurate or went way downhill; he just got too smug. When sports guys delude themselves into thinking that they are important people talking about something that actually matters, the shark has been jumped.
I happened to agree with him about the ACC not getting enough bids that year. But he was a smug prick in that interview. One question was fine and warranted. Once answered, move on.
