Introducing Wii MotionPlus, accessory for the Wii Remote (http://wiinintendo.net/2008/07/14/introducing-wii-motionplus-accessory-for-the-wii-remote/) July 14, 2008

Nintendo’s upcoming Wii MotionPlus accessory for the revolutionary Wii Remote controller again redefines game control, by more quickly and accurately reflecting motions in a 3-D space. The Wii MotionPlus accessory attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and, combined with the accelerometer and the sensor bar, allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play. The Wii MotionPlus accessory reconfirms Nintendo’s commitment to making games intuitive and accessible for everyone. Nintendo will reveal more details about the Wii MotionPlus accessory and other topics Tuesday

Guitar Hero is becoming Rock Band. I wonder if their drum kit and guitar will be compatible with Rock Band 2 (The Guitar Hero makers are the ones that tried to make thier stuff not work with Rock Band, right? Or something like that?)
Who is this Duffy and why won't she move?

The GHIII guitar/game combo I just got said that only GHIII peripherals will work with GHIII. So the guitar works with Rock Band, but allegedly my Rock Band guitar won't work with GHIII.

Ok, I forgot which way the compatibility went. I guess this means you shouldn't expect your Rock Star stuff to work with Guitar Hear World Tour.
I know they want to make their money off of their controllers, but I wonder how many people won't get GH World Tour because the drums/guitar they have from RS or RS2 won't work with GH World Tour (if they in fact don't work with it).

Here's the interesting section:
Rock Band 2 will feature backwards compatibility with all Rock Band downloadable music content released to date.
Owners of the original Rock Band will have the ability to export most of the Rock Band disc tracks and upgrade them into Rock Band 2 gameplay-the first time ever in videogame history! [1]
If I'm reading this right Sounds like most of the disc songs will be able to be played in Rock Band 2.. which is good, I want to keep most of my favorites from RB 1 into RB2.
Good Game, Guitar Hero World Tour, well played. You LOSE.

Yeah, my main reason for getting a PS3 (since I don't own a big HDTV) is gone, too. I still haven't even really gotten a chance to play FF12 yet, so if it's not released for awhile, that won't matter to me.
I thought Microsoft's presentation was pretty awful overall, frankly, but there were a few nuggets. I saw a couple of games that looked interesting, I like that live arcade's dev kit is free and there are going to be some good products of that (word soup looked cool). The movie editing game seemed pretty horrible. Glad to see FF not as a ps exclusive anymore. Wish it would return to Nintendo, too :)
Started off their presentation by showing 2 of the most graphically bland games I've ever seen, yet again (seems to be a staple)--I swear Fallout and RE5 had 3 color palettes.
Watching coverage on G4 was worth it just for this commerical:

Well, keep in mind, there are only around 60 or so songs on the disc in the first place. That's a lot, but most could technically be as few as 31. I'm curious how that's going to work, exactly, and I hope to have more information after my demo on Thursday morning.

Well, partly, but it's not entirely MBBF.
There have been a LOT of people who clung to that particular canard. It was sort of the trump bullet in the gun, each time a previously exclusive franchise was announced for the Xbox 360.
It's MOSTLY laughter at how the whole thing has unfolded...but there's a little schadenfreude in there, too. We'll see what Sony has to counter that at their press briefing tomorrow (which I can't attend because stinkin' Foz couldn't come out here to shoulder the E3 meetings load. :p).

Here's the setlist for RB2:
Wow. That set list is a bit below expectations in my book. Sure, there are good songs, but with 84, there damn well better be.
I see them poaching some old GH songs with Round and Round, Carry on Wayward Son, etc- but they're good songs so sharing the wealth to different series isn't bad. I'm curious if there's going to start being some RB/GH exclusivity contracts handed out- "Now, if you publish your song with us and we pay you extra money, you can't go over to the other game". That sort of thing.
However, I see a lot of songs that would not be in my "top songs for a band". That's the best they could do for AC/DC? Drain You for Nirvana? C'mon. And Battery for Metallica? I can count of at least 10 ununsed songs from them I'd prefer more and that's a conservative estimate. I think we're just starting to reach a point where we're running out of "Quality Guitar Hero/Rock Band" songs for this genre in history.

I expect it makes good business sense for them to release the best songs as downloadable content.

Certainly that wasn't anything close to what my comments were after the announcement. I stated that it was a bomb of an announcement and that it would hurt Sony.
You also spun it many different ways. Your first comment was how much it cost Microsoft to do, and your second was you saying it's not much of an impact unless it happens to allow Microsoft a foothold in Japan:
Couple things to watch for regarding FFXIII.....
1. How much did Microsoft spend to land FFXIII on their system? Had to be a pretty penny.
2. Will the release be similar to the GTAIV release? Sells software (which is great for the developer), but fails to move many consoles as the installed base is already somewhat set. Japan is where this will be very important for them. They could do some damage to Sony if they can get a foothold over there.
Here you mention that it's good in that it breaks an exclusive logjam for Microsoft, but bad because it puts the focus on first-party exclusives which Microsoft is not good at:
Yep, very true. I do think that this continues the trend of third party exclusives continuing to be less and less attractive. It's really good and bad for Microsoft if that's true. It's good because they will land a few of the third party games that Sony has used as a choke-hold over the past several years. It's bad in that first party exclusives will play a much greater role on the systems, and Microsoft's weakness compared to its competitors is first party games.
Here's your strong "Meh" because you still get to play on PS3, plus point out issues Microsoft still has even with this, plus build anticipation for Sony's press conference:
As mentioned above by wade, that's definitely the impact that MS wanted. It shows just how the third-party exclusives are quickly disappearing. You implied in another head that 'my head would explode'. Not sure why that would happen as it doesn't affect me personally. I still get to play FFXIII either way on my PS3. It certainly will spur debate in this thread, that's for sure. Microsoft still has to find a way to sell consoles. That's their main problem right now. The main sales that were lost by this announcement were the cross-over sales by 360 owners to the PS3. Sony now has to find other ways to make cross-over sales. I do think your comment that it will eliminate the impact on PS3 sales is highly exaggerated. It will definitely still provide a boost.
I would note that Sony's press conference is scheduled for tomorrow. MS has laid down their claim. We'll have to see what Sony has in store to counter this move. I have no doubt that they're not just going to roll over. It's definitely great to see these kinds of things take place because it really spurs interest in the consoles, which is great for the industry over the long haul.
So yes, you briefly mention this may hurt Sony a bit, but you spent far more time talking about all the bad things this does to Microsoft that even out the good, talk about how this actually helps Sony since they have an advantage in first-party exclusives, and lay the groundwork for Sony's conference today.

Yet I note how you conviniently left out my multiple criticisms of Sony and the PS3. You spun it how you wanted to spin it to slant it as though I was somehow propping up Sony, but there was plenty of criticism to go around. Nintendo was the only system that I wasn't critical of in the thread. I mentioned in that thread that it hurt Sony. I said that the move yesterday likely cost Sony hundreds of thousands of hardware unit sales. I said that Sony likely was using the bottom line when deciding where to keep FFXIII exclusive, but that it was a bad decision and that the loss of previous exclusives has hurt the perception of the PS brand as a whole.
Where was all that in your assessment of my supposed pro-Sony, anti-MS comments? You're grasping at straws here. I think I've been very critical of Sony. But to assume that suddenly the problems surrounding the 360 have been removed because they now have FFXIII is very flawed at best. They still have lots of issues, much like Sony. I think that assessment is very fair.

This discussion was about your early strong assertions that Sony would never let FFXIII go to the 360 and your reaction to it going to the 360 not matching those early strong statements, not your general reactions to all consoles. As always, you'll bury one negative comment in a host of spin, then later use the fact that you said that one negative thing as evidence of your neutrality.

Similarly, you're spinning bullet points of my statements into what you'd like them to be rather than showing the full range of statements, both positive and negative, that I've made. Certainly, you have been very open with your bias towards which console you prefer, but I don't think that precludes you from discussing the console war with some form of neutrality.
Also, I'm under no false impression that this is a neutral board in regards to consoles, but that doesn't mean that honest discussion can't take place. If I wanted a PS3 circle-jerk, I certainly wouldn't choose to discuss the console war here. My opinion regarding FFXIII turned out to be incorrect. I've never debated that. If were going to have a discussion thread about who was right about FFXIII, then you win. But I think there's much more to be discussed here than just that.

Animal Crossing: City Folk looks good. Wife will love it.
Wii Sports Resort (or whatever it was) looks cool but it sucks it won't be out until Spring.
Wii Music looks dumb, but I might like to see it actually being used instead of the nonsense demo on the stage.
Cool that a GTA game is coming to DS but I'm not interested.
I learned nothing about Spore Creatures I didn't already know.
3rd party games were not up my alley at all, so meh.
More to come for Nintendo probably. At least I hope Wii Music isn't their big finish.

I agree with AC/DC, but Drain You is one of my favorites from Nirvana and Battery is one of my favorites from Metallica.
Besides, I think it's more important for them to pick songs that would be fun to play rather than the songs that were their top hits. The one I don't like is Man In The Box from Alice In Chains. Maybe one of their best known song, but also one of the most basic. I would think Would?, Again, We Die Young, Dam That River, and a lot of others would be more fun to play.
And, of course, they need to save a lot of the top hits for the DL songs they sell you.

I'm absolutely thrilled Luminious Arc is getting a sequel. One of my favorite games ever and one that I think was underrated by a lot of people.

I realize that it has to be fun to play. I think it's a theory lost on a lot of people who make "wanted song lists". They forget that a lot of songs would just be boring to play. I can see Battery being a favorite and it's acceptable but there are better choices in my mind. That said, with Metallica, there are a ton of songs that are good GH/RB songs and would be fun to play. They're a phenomenal band and the body of work is huge despite what the last 10 years have done to their popularity.
But, really, Drain You from Nirvana? Seriously? I just don't see it. Heart Shaped Box was a good choice on GH2. Lithium seems like a really obvious next choice in both the "good GH/RB song" and popular categories (assuming Smells Like Teen Spirit is off limits).

N with a pretty pedestrian showing today- not much out there. Microsoft had the best show with stealing FF13 but hard to beat that for anyone.

New Zelda for Wii Confirmed:
http://wiinintendo.net/2008/07/15/miyamoto-confirms-new-wii-zelda-in-development/
The announcement that should have been in the conference with more details has been revealed by Miyamoto in an interview. He has confirmed that a new Zelda title is in the works for Wii and confirmed that it will be different than other Zelda titles, as the rumors have said. Here’s what he had to say about the title…
“The Zelda team in particular always works on Zelda titles. The core members of the Zelda team have for a very long time now been focused on Zelda games, and continue to focus on Zelda games, so they are hard at work and working away. And then, of course, we have the DS Zelda team as well, so even there we’re having some switching of people in and out where the DS team is mixing in with the Wii team and working on the Wii version.”
When asked about if the new Zelda will be in first person, Miyamoto responded with the following…
“I don’t necessarily think it will change that drastically, but I think that Zelda is a franchise that does need some big new unique ideas. And so the team right now is very focused on trying to find those ideas.”
It’s good to finally have official confirmation of a new Wii Zelda title. I thought I’d celebrate this announcement with the above picture of a shiny gold Zelda Wii.
