When the Large Hadron Collider is turned on, what is going to happen?

They're really going to turn it on?

I hope they don't create a black hole or something. :)

I am so confused.

tomorrow in europe they turn on the LHC which is a massive particle accelerator (what's it like 17 miles in diameter?). Basically the doomsdayers are worried it'll create mini black holes that will eventually devour the earth, or antimatter that'll blow the earth up, or any matter of other spectacular stuff.

Agree there. Thankfully, with the forum changes, nobody will lose any posts.

As long as the flux capacitor is functioning properly, there should be no problems.

On Sept. 10, 2008, they're going to attempt to have a particle beam circumnavigate the entire LHC as a test.

By October, 2008, they will have two particle beams collide in the LHC, which they assume will unlock a whole lot of mysteries about the origins of the universe.

More on hxxp://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Welcome.html

edit:

this is not the very first test of this kind.

there is the RHIC, located in Upton, New York, which is about 3 km long, and they have been colliding particles there since 2000.

The obvious problem here is that they are not sure what is going to happen with some of these experiments. Some people believe that it will not create black holes, some people believe it will but that they will quickly evaporate, some believe it could be very bad for us.

I am all for advancing scientific research, but it does seem like a fairly big gamble to take when you aren't sure what you are even expecting to happen.

I heard they are accelerating these particles to 99.99% the speed of light, why can't they get that last .01%?

Chubby
09-09-2008, 02:46 PM
because supposedly nothing can travel the speed of light since it would reach infinite mass (despite the particles in light having a miniscule mass in of themselves). Eventually I susppect we will reach and surpass the speed of light but that day hasn't arrived.

Ha. :)

Well I don't think Eintstein's equation is absolute. There's nothing in science to back that up but we once thought the world was flat too :) Chalk it up to one of life's mysteries that I don't think we've solved yet.

I think eventually there will be a way to surpass the speed of light that still keeps Einstein intact

It's still going to take time to to move a distance regardless of whether that can be discerned by the human eye. It may appear that you moved there instantly.

I hope it's something between the end of the world and nothing. I'm kind of bored with earth as it is. Maybe it'll fix Brady's ACL.

I read about some Russian scientists who believe that time travelers from the future will visit us immediately after they turn this on. Or some shit.

This is like a larger version of Fermilab in Illinois, right? Went there in elementary school...pretty kool stuff.

And no option for Vulcans/Borg/Dr Who/some other alien race will visit us? For shame.

And I would say stop being such a pussy and push the button.

In all seriousness, my hope is that we open a portal to somewhere else and aliens pour out and an intergalactic war begins.

I'll be happy with time travelers too, but not as happy.

Some scientists thought that the first atom bomb test would start a chain reaction in the atmosphere and burn the Earth. It might've even been Oppenheimer who was taking bets on whether it would end the world while they waited for the Trinity test.because supposedly nothing can travel the speed of light since it would reach infinite mass (despite the particles in light having a miniscule mass in of themselves). Eventually I suspect we will reach and surpass the speed of light but that day hasn't arrived. It also has to do with the amount of energy (infinite) required to accelerate an object to the speed of light.

There are some indications of particles (tachyons) that travel faster than the speed of light, but no indication that the barrier can be crossed.

From Wikipedia... Fermilab's Tevatron is a landmark particle accelerator; at 6.28 kilometers (4 miles) in circumference, it is the world's second largest energy particle accelerator (LHC is 27 kilometres in circumference).

The actual colliding of particles will be during October, I believe.

But at least they were able to flip the switch and have a particle beam circumnavigate the entire LHC today.

Joy!

I never quite understood why the media was latching onto today as "end of the world" day. Today was just shooting the particle beam in one direction- nothing exciting even happened. Now, when they start colliding stuff- that's when the fun begins with aliens, black holes, and time travelers.
