What the hell is this?

...is probably what you are asking yourself right now. This is the continuation of my Rutgers...the birthplace of college football (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6760) dynasty (played with Front Office Football: The College Years). I've finally decided to launch this portion of my dynasty using FOF4, and I hope this "dynasty" will help compliment my more important Rutgers dynasty.

setup
Unlike standard careers, I will not be an interactive participant. I will merely be an invisible observer of the players in this dynasty and the league in which they inhabit. In many respects this dynasty will be similar to stkelly's long running five great men (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4481) dynasty. I will follow the careers of every Rutgers player who comes and goes through the league. I've taken the liberty of borrowing this concept from stkelly (just as he borrowed it from someone else before me), because I found it both unique and entertaining. I suggest you give his threads a read if you haven't yet.

In case you're wondering about the technical aspects of things, I'm running FOF4 on the wall-street setting with hiring/firing off and scouts making all the decisions for the team I'm techincally in charge of (the Brunswick Bombers).

What league is this?
While my TCY based career at Rutgers takes place in a universe familiar to the college football fan, this pro dynasty will not.

my history
In 1966, the formation of the American Football League (AFL) challenges the dominance of the NFL. The AFL's aggressive tactics, such as raiding the rosters of NFL squads and holding a competing draft for college talent, create a hostile atmosphere in the football world. Fierce competition leads to salary inflation previously unimagened. The competition for some talent becomes so stiff that owners are exhausting their available resources in an attempt to field a winning team. To try to off-set these player expenses, ticket prices skyrocket. By the end of the 1968 season, the bottom falls out of both leagues. Fan frustration leads to all-time low attendance, which in turn leads to a majority of squads closing up shop. In January 1969, both the NFL and the AFL officially fold, and the country is temporarily left without a pro league.

In the hopes of salvaging pro football, some owners draw up a design for a new professional football league. The dream of a small, regionally-minded 32 team league takes root. Those former AFL & NFL teams which can afford to stay in business do, while the the rest of the league is filled with areas that harken back to the roots of pro football, or regions which have always thirsted for a pro team. Cities which haven't seen pro ball in 40 years or more are again back on the pigskin map. With low salaries and absolutely no plans for expansion, a young but stable league is formed. In 1969, the American Football Federation is formed.

where we stand now

The reason I've chosen 2007 to begin this draft is two-fold:

1. These players are the first of "my" recruits to graduate. The roster I inherited is now gone, and only my players are coming out of the Rutgers program.

2. 2007 happens to be the first year that a Rutgers grad can make any impact of consequence on the AFF.

The story so far
Just like in real life, when players finish their college careersm they enter the draft in the following year. (So a 2002 senior enters the 2003 draft).

2003
Not a single Rutgers grad is even sniffed at. No one is invited to the scouting combine, and no one has a chance at a professional career.

2004
Kicker Rico Kafka is invited to the scouting combine, where a lousy performance sours his chances of a pro career. After going undrafted, Rico spends a fruitless year waiting for a phone call that never comes. He offically retires after the season ends.

2005
Four Rutgers players have a legimate shot at playing profesionally: Safety Matthew Hoover, Tackle Roy Vance, QB Daryl Perrin, and Guard Jim Lyle. All four players go undrafted, but T Roy Vance manages to land a 1-year $650,000 contract with the San Diego Chargers. He spends the entire season on the inactive roster as the Chargers go 8-8. Roy is not resigned, spends 2006 out of football, and retires. QB Daryl Perrin and G Jim Lyle both hang it up without ever signing a contract. Safety Matthew Hoover proves to be the most dedicated of the group. Despite not playing in 2005 or 2006, in 2007 we will still find Matthew around and hoping for a contract.

2006
Defensive Tackle Preston Slocum is invited to the combine, where a miserable performance cripples his prosepects. Considered only the 67th best available DT in the draft, he easily goes undrafted. As the weeks pass and Preston's weight baloons, he realizes he will never play football again. Before the 2007 season Preston offically retires.

2007
Ok, back to the present! Safety Matthew Hoover has confirmed that for a 3rd season he will attempt to find a roster spot in pro football. We'll keep an eye on his progress. Now on to the 2007 draft...

2007 Draft Preview

Excitement is at an all time high for Rutgers fans. Not only are we assured of having a player drafted, but there is a distinct possibility that 3 players could come off the board this year. This is the year these grads start doing Rutgers proud!

Here's a glimpse at our draft eligible players:

DE Terry Jackson
#2 rated Defensive End, 6.7 potential grade
Should become a pass rush monster, while still being capable against the run. With the league's emphasis on the defensive line, he should be a first round selection.

College Career: An absolute demon on the field in all 4 years. Took the big east by storm as a true freshman, earning a 1st team nod at DE for the Big East, top defensive freshman in the Big East, and named All-Freshman nationally. In 2004 was 2nd team Big East, and in 2005 and 2006 was again 1st team. In 2006 he was named to the national All-Senior team. Racked up 267 tackles, 85 assists, 96 tackles for loss, and 54.5 sacks in 44 games. Never missed a game and was an absolute monster. Should definitely make the transition to the pro game.

WR Ricardo Schroeder
#14 rated Wide Receiver, 3.8 potential grade
Is a big play reciever who also runs solid routes. While an otherwise limited talent, he could contribute to a team.

College Career: Was Big East's top Offensive Freshman in 2003, 1st team Big East in 2005, and 2nd Team Big East in 2006. Was injured for a portion of his senior year (broken wrist), but appears to be fully recovered. Was primed for his biggest season as a senior before the injury stopped him in his tracks. Easily the best receiever Rutgers has ever seen, Ricardo should be able to catch on as a #3 or #4 reciever professionally.

DT Nick Evans
#13 rated Defensive Tackle, 3.4 potential grade
Not much of a player now, but should develop into a fair backup or emergency starter.

College Career: played in 45 of 45 possible games, starting 34 including his entire junior and senior season. The fact that he was red-shirted in his 3rd year at Rutgers concerned some teams, but his play was much better in his final 2 years, so perhaps the move was justified. Was a pretty solid run-stopping force his final 2 years, with 81 tackles, 30 assists, and 18 tackles-for-loss. He picked up a meager 7 sacks in those 2 seasons.

C Dan Barton
#41 rated Center, 2.0 potential grade
No real talent to speak of, he's a longshot to be drafted or signed.

College Career: started 44 of a possible 44 games. A tough kid who is a passable run-blocker (29.6% career rate) and pretty good pass blocker (2.0% sacks allowed). Was 2nd team All Big East in 2005, his junior season.

ILB Sherman Blackburn
#56 rated Inside Line Backer, 2.0 potential grade
Simply a terrible LB prospect with no real potential.

College Career: A hard worker, but fairly ordinary on the field. Averaged about 45 tackles a season and only had 1 career sack. Probably not cut out for the pro game, but if he is it would have to be as a reserve middle linebacker.

When DE Greg Ward came off the board so quickly at #2, Terry Jackson's agent (Tom Williams) had dollar signs dancing in his head. Terry didn't land a mind-numbing payday, but still made a splash by becoming the first of our Rutgers players to be drafted.

It's fairly surprising that Nick Evans is drafted almost a full round before Ricardo Schroeder. The players are just happy to be selected though, and some others weren't so fortunate. C Dan Barton and LB Sherman Blackburn are heartbroken and now turn their hopes to a free-agent contract.

It's payday for some Scarlet Knights! After the draft their agents went to work and hammered out the following deals:

DE Terry Jackson - Houston Oilers
4 years, 12.88 million with a 3.52 million bonus. The final year is voidable if he reaches 10 sacks in 2009. There has been some grumblings in the press about the voidable clause, since it seems to have been a questionable move by his agent. If Terry were to reach 10 sacks he would void 2010. But - since he would only have 3 years of experience under his belt, he would be a restricted free agent. No matter how you slice it, Terry won't be seeing the open market for at least 4 years.

DT Nick Evans - Denver Broncos
2 years, 2.13 million with a 340K signing bonus
A standard late round deal, Nick will have to earn his next paycheck on the field.

WR Ricardo Schroeder - Tampa Bay BUccaneers
2 years, 1.89 million with a 140K bonus
Ricardo's fate is in his hands with this bare-bones deal. He'll need to get lucky to get enough playing time to earn a significant payday in 2009.

Dan Barton and Sherman Blackburn do not receive contract offers before camp, nor does the ever-persistent Matthew Hoover, who hasn't signed a deal since going undrafted in 2005.

Pre-Season

DE Terry Jackson becomes the first Rutgers player to actually get on the field in an NFL game! This is the only highlight of an unspectacular pre-season, as Nick Evans and Ricardo Schroedoer are inactive for all of their games. Terry might be the only player to see significant playing time this year.

None of our free agents manage to catch on, so it will be just our three drafted players heading into the beginning of the regular season...

Week 1

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys
SE Ricardo Schroeder didn't see the field, but probably will next week. A serious knee injury to starting split-end Bob Moye should open things up for Ricardo. Tampa looked very sloppy in it's opener, and was pummeled 38-13.

Los Angeles Wave at Denver Broncos
DT Nick Evans was inactive, and likely will be all season unless some injuries to other players put him on the active roster. The Wave flattened the Broncos, 26-14.

Houston Oilers at Mississippi Raftsmen
Due to injury, DE Terry Jackson started the game at Left Defensive End!
In 54 plays he had 4 tackles, 1/2 sack and 1 hurry - not bad! He helped lead his team to an easy 26-13 win.

Week 2

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1) at Florida Alligators (1-0)
SE Ricardo Schroeder saw the field for the first time as a pro, and showed he could be an impact player. Targeted for a pass 3 times, Ricardo hauled in 2 catches for 23 yards and 1 touchdown! He provided the winning score as Tampa barely edged out Florida 14-13.

Denver Broncos (0-1) at Duluth Eskimos (1-0)
DT Nick Evans was inactive.
Denver stole a victory with a close 19-16 battle.

Dallas Cowboys (1-0) at Houston Oilers (1-0)
Sliding back into his reserve position, Terry saw just 20 plays in this intra-state feud. 1 tackle was his lone statistic as Dallas got the better of its Texas brethren, moving to 2-0 with a 17-13 victory.

Brunswick Bombers (2-0) at Denver Broncos (1-1)
DT Nick Evans was inactive again. Denver's passing game guided them to a 24-14 victory.

Duluth Eskimos (1-1) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1)
Targeted 3 times, Schroeder had 2 catches for 28 yards. Don't let the final score decieve you, Tampa rolled to victory 27-20.

Houston Oilers (1-1) at Brooklyn Dodgers (1-1)
DE Terry Jackson recorded just one assist on 28 plays. Houston lost it's second in a row, 30-24.

Houston Oilers (1-2) at Los Angeles Waves (2-1)
With a little more playing time (39 plays), Jackson got more involved in the action. He finished with 1 tackle, 1 assist, 1 sack, and 1 hurry. Sadly it wasn't enough for a victory, and Houston dropped it's third straight 23-17.

Las Vegas Aces (3-0) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1)
SE Ricardo Schroeder has been a consistent contributer. Targeted 3 times, he caught all 3 passes for 39 yards and a touchdown. Tampa won big, 32-10.

Mississippi Raftsmen (0-3) at Denver Broncos (2-1)
DT Nick Evans was intactive, and Denver edged the hapless Raftsmen 27-22 and move to 3-1 on the season.

Hehe, probably not this season. I had already played up to like week 13 or something and this dynasty will only soon be moving into "real time." Currently I'm just getting caught up. I don't think I saved the game by week so I won't be able to do quarterly reviews (at least not this season). ;)

Week 5

Denver Broncos (3-1) - bye week

San Diego Chargers (2-2) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1)
Targeted just twice, Ricardo Schroeder had 1 catch for 26 yards. Tampa Bay couldn't produce in the red zone, and 4 field goals weren't enough. San Diego won 16-12.

Oakland Raiders (2-2) at Houston Oilers (1-3)
It was Terry Jackson's roughest day yet as a pro, as he made nothing happen in his 30 plays on the field. Still, the Oilers routed the Raiders 42-21.

Tennessee Mountainmen (2-2) at Denver Broncos (3-1)
DT Nick Evans continues to ride the pine. Denver's offense struggled, and they lost a tight game, 15-10.

Houston Oilers (2-3) at Missouri Bison (2-2)
In 29 plays DE Terry Jackson had 2 tackles and 1/2 a sack. Houston fell to Missouri 17-3.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) at Salt Lake City Pickle Weed (1-4)
With the return of starting reciever Bob Moye, SE Ricardo Schroeder was moved back to the inactive roster. Barring injuries he might not see anymore playing time this season. It's a shame since he seems to be doing quite well in limited playing time. Even without Ricardo, Tampa didn't have much trouble with Salt Lake City. They moved to 4-2 with a 30-24 victory.

Denver Broncos (3-2) at Houston Oilers (2-4)
While Terry Jackson saw plenty of playing time, Nick Evans could only sit on the bench and jealously watch his former teammate. In 39 plays DE Terry Jackson recorded 2 tackles, 1 assist, 1/2 a sack. However, it wasn't enough. Denver held on for a 30-27 victory.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2) - bye week

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-2) at Portland Storm (4-3)
WR Ricardo Schroeder was inactive, and Tampa lost a tight one in overtime 30-27.

Houston Oilers (2-5) at Tennessee Mountainmen (3-3)
In 49 plays Terry Jackson recorded 3 tackles and 1 assist. Houston simply isn't a good team though, and they were crushed 49-21.

Denver Broncos (4-2) at Los Angeles Wave (4-2)
DT Nick Evans was inactive as Denver fell to LA 24-12.

DT Nick Evans was inactive. Denver lost it's second game in a row, 23-17.

WR Ricardo Schroeder was inactive, and Tampa Bay's playoff hopes to a beating. They were defeated handily, 37-15.

Mid-Season report

Denver Broncos (4-4)
Denver is techincally in last place, but just 1 game from the division leading Los Angeles Waves (5-3). DT Nick Evans has been inactive for all 8 games, and there is no playing time in sight.

Houston Oilers (2-6)
Houston has lost a lot of tight games, and isn't quite as bad as they appear. I think they'll miss the playoffs but probably finish about 7-9. DE Terry Jackson has played in all 8 games, and started the season opener. He has 13 tackles, 4 assists, 2.5 sacks and 3 hurries in moderate playing time.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4)
Tampa is just 1 game behind division leading Dallas and has a definite shot at the division or a wild card spot. SE Ricardo Schroeder benefitted from injuries early in the year, but has been inactive for the last 4 games. In the 4 games he did play, he played well. He has 8 catches for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns in very limited playing time.

Dallas Cowboys (5-3) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4)
WR Ricardo Schroeder was inactive. Tampa Bay pulled into a tie for the division lead with a 26-17 victory.

Mississippi Raftsmen (1-7) at Houston Oilers (2-6)
In 40 plays, Terry Jackson recorded 2 tackles, 1 assist, and 1 sack. I think if Terry had the opportunity to start he might

end the season with 13 sacks or so. Regardless, he has a bright future. Anyway, the Oilers continued their downward spiral and lost 27-24 in overtime.

Missouri Bison (5-3) at Denver Broncos (4-4)
DT Nick Evans was inactive, but Denver kept their playoff hopes alive with a 37-34 win.

Denver Broncos (5-4) at Oakland Raiders (4-5)
DT Nick Evans was inactive again, and Denver was pulled back to .500 with a 32-29 defeat.

Charlotte Colonels (4-5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-4)
SE Ricardo Schroeder was inactive. Tampa also fell to .500, losing a tight 16-10 game.

Houston Oilers (2-7) at Florida Alligators (5-4)
Terry Jackson's playing time has been steadily increasing. On the field for 51 plays, he recorded 3 tackles, 1 assist, and 2 hurries to help spur the Oilers to a 31-17 victory.

Green Bay Packers (5-5) at Denver Broncos (5-5)
DT Nick Evans was inactive. Green Bay won big (38-130 in a game that could be very damaging to the Broncos' playoff hopes.

Houston Oilers (3-7) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-5)
On one sideline, SE Ricardo Schroeder was inactive. On the other DE Terry Jackson didn't see the field as much as he had been recently. In 28 total plays he recorded only 1 assist. Despite Terry's sub-standard performance, Tampa cruised to a 27-16 victory in a game that wasn't as close as the score would indicate.

Akron Pros (5-6) at Houston Oilers (3-8)
Houston prevailed in a real shootout, 55-38. Terry Jackson provided 3 tackles and 2 hurries in 58 plays.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-5) at Chicago Bears (4-7)
SE Ricardo Schroeder was inactive yet again. Tampa kept their playoff hopes alive with a 27-7 win in the windy city.

Denver Broncos (5-6) at Canton Bulldogs (5-6)
DT Nick Evans was inactive. Denver isn't giving up their playoff dreams, they took out the Bulldogs 24-17.

Houston Oilers (4-8) at New Orleans Voodoo (5-7)
DE Terry Jackson sees reduced playing time, and records just 1 assist in 22 plays. Still Houston shows they're not the worst team in the league, and pull out a dramatic 34-31 overtime victory.

Minneapolis Marines (3-8) at Denver Broncos (6-6)
DT Nick Evans is inactive for the 13th straight game. Denver hangs on to their playoff hopes with a 27-21 win.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-5) at Mississippi Raftsmen (3-9)
With the top 4 recievers on his team banged up, SE Ricardo Schroeder was activated for the first time in weeks. On the field for 10 passing plays, Ricardo was targeted 3 times and managed 2 catches for 24 yards. Tampa's margin of error for the playoffs got a lot smaller, as they lost 22-16 in overtime.

Week 15

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-6) at Charlotte Colonels (7-6)
Injuries kept SE Ricardo Schroeder on the field. In the game on 16 passing plays, Ricardo was targeted 2 times, catching both for a total of 30 yards. Tampa went on to win 34-23.

Week 16

Charlotte Colonels (7-7) at Houston Oilers (6-8)
Houston drops a tight one, 17-19. DE Terry Jackson puts in another solid day of work, recording 3 tackles, 1 assist, 1 blocked pass, and 1 hurry in 45 plays.

Denver Broncos (8-6) at Kenosha Maroons (10-4)
DT Nick Evans is still inactive. Denver wins 33-27 and moves into a tie for their division lead.

Week 17

Denver Broncos (9-6) at Missouri Bison (8-7)
DT Nick Evans is activated!! :D Party time! He is in the game for exactly 4 plays and records no stats at all. Worse is the fact that the Broncos lose 31-17. Will this cost them a playoff spot?

New Orleans Voodoo (6-9) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-6)
SE Ricardo Schroeder gets to play in the regular season finale. He is on the field for 7 passing plays, and is targeted 2 times. Ricardo finishes the day with 2 catches for 24 yards. Tampa wins 20-14 and guarantees themselves a playoff spot! However, there is some really bad news as SE Ricardo Schroeder was injured during the game. A strained delotid muscle will keep him sidelined for up to 5 weeks. Unless the Buccaneers make a run at the title, he'll be unlikely to play in the postseason.

DE Terry Jackson records 2 tackles, and 1 sack in 37 plays. Houston pulls out a last-minute win to finish a not-too-bad 7-9.

Wild Card Playoffs

Kenosha Maroons (10-6) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10-6)
Now amongst the many banged-up recievers, SE Ricardo Schroeder is placed back on the inactive list due to his strained deltoid muscle. Tampa wins pretty convincingly, 30-20 and moves on to the divisional round of the playoffs.

game played in Fort Wayne, Indiana

While all our Scarlet Knights' seasons have ended, the league concluded it's season in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Green Bay's aerial attack proved to be too much for Los Angeles' dominating ground game, as the Packers prevailed 24-22. This makes Green Bay 3-for-3 in title games (1973, 1979), while the Waves lost the big game for the second time.

Season Wrap-up

Terry Jackson
Defensive End - Houston Oilers
Started opening day due to injury, but was a backup the other 15 games. Was the only of our Scarlet Knights to play all 16 games in his rookie year. Played very well in limited playing time, recording 29 tackles, 10 assists, 5.5 sacks and 9 hurries. Another year in training camp could do wonders for him. I expect 2008 to be a big year for him.

Nick Evans
Defensive Tackle - Denver Broncos
Nick didn't make the active roster until the final game of the season, where he was still buried on the depth chart. He was on the field for 4 plays, recording no stats. Nick will need to develop a lot this offseason to ensure he even makes the team again next year.

Ricardo Schroeder
Split End - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Recoverd from his injury, Ricardo looks to be 100%. An impact player when on the field, Ricardo will need to improve his route running and overall hands to see more playing time next year. If he's lucky he'll make a career of being a #3 or #4 receiver, If he's unlucky he could be out of the league as soon as next season. Ricardo finished the season with 14 catches for 194 yards and 2 touchdowns, he did not drop the ball once.

The Hopefuls
Center Dan Barton and ILB Sherman Blackburn sat at home while the entire season passed them by. Neither has a real chance at playing and both will probably call it quits after this year. Safety Matthew Hoover has proved amazingly dedicated in lasting this long, this is the third season he has been unable to land on a team. Matthew will most likely also give up the dream.
