Apparently a radio station in Detroit (WDFN 1130 AM) is reporting that Millen actually could be gone today.

Here's a little more on this...

Millen fired? Rumors are flying all over Allen Park -
Detroit Lions: News, Blogs, Photos, Audio, Schedule & Stats - MLive.com (http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2008/09/millen_fired_rumors_are_flying.html)

Rumors are swirling around the Detroit Lions practice facility in Allen Park that something is going on with president Matt Millen. It could be that he's been fired by owner William Clay Ford or it could be a shakeup, either in the personnel department or coaching staff, that doesn't involve Millen. It could also be that nothing is going on and it's just rumor.

However, none of my phones calls have been returned this morning and it appears some of those cell phones have been turned off. That makes the situation very suspicioius. Stay tuned.

More yet still...

FOX Sports on MSN - NFL - Millen out as Lions president, GM (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8601458/Millen-out-as-Lions-president,-GM)

Detroit fans, your wish appears to have finally come true.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Lions have finally removed team president and GM Matt Millen from his post, unseating one of the most criticized executives in Detroit sports history.

Millen was informed of the move last night during a late-night high-level meeting. This morning several people within the building confirmed that he had large packing boxes in his office and he made his way around to different employees telling them of the move.

It is unclear if Millen was fired or removed himself from the equation but the news comes just days after Bill Ford, Jr. publicly stated he would have fired the GM if it was his decision but he lacked the authority to do so.

The Lions have started off horribly and the groundswell for Millen's demise has once again been strong. Unfortunately, that's nothing new as there have been events like the Millen Man March, an in-game walkout protest and calls for Millen's firing for years.
The Lions have won only one playoff game and are an NFL-worst 31-84 since Millen took over in 2001. They have also been a model of futility on the road and Millen has gone through three head coaches, none of whom have been able to turn the Lions into a winner.

So who does Ford appoint next to run the team? He could wait until after the season and hire George W. Bush.

All these articles are mentioning that the Lions have won "one" playoff game under Millen. That's giving him too much credit, isn't it? They haven't made the playoffs since '99.

I hope he got canned, and didn't resign. I want to picture him on his knees with tears running down his cheeks, begging and blubbering.

And I hope they kick him up the asshole at the threshold of the exit.

The articles are blocked so I can't read them, but I think the one HB posted is trying to say they have only won one playoff game "ever", and are 31-84 since Millen took over. Of course, by "ever" they mean ever since the Super Bowl cam about -- the Lions are the biggest loser in terms of all history before 1966 being eradicated, probably followed by the Browns, then maybe the Bears?

Yeah, that's horribly inaccurate. They haven't made the playoffs or even had a winning record since Millen took over. Last year's 7-9 was the high water mark.

They have won ONE playoff game in the last 51 years. That was against the Cowboys in 1991, the Lions promptly got destroyed by the Redskins in the NFC Championship game the following week.

Whatever the original article said, even the ESPN.com front page blurb has:

"The unpopular Lions president and GM finally is leaving the team, which went 31-84 and won one playoff game during Millen's tenure"

Kind of annoying.

Actually we were discussing this very thing yesterday in the office. If your Matt, can you actually show your face in a while?

We came to the consensus he is done and doubt you will see him for a while. If I am Matt I move to Fiji, change my name and just hide out for a few years enjoying my millions.

But I don't think the Cards were as good as the Lions before 1966, so they didn't lose as much. They're probably #3 though, ahead of the Bears.

I am not sure who the potential candidates are, but they need to get someone from the outside. They can't simply promote from within. They need to cleanse the football operations side of the organization in a significant way.

If I wEre the lions I would bring in cowher ASAP. That would give him 3 months to evaluate the team and plan changes for the offseason when he takes over the HC job. I'd imagine fans would rather see the lions fold in the playoffs every year instead of missing it completely.

Yeah, I'm just not sure it will matter when Mike brown dies, katie isn't really any better and I'm not sure there are any heirs to take over at that point, or that want to. it'll be a real clusterfuck then.

Honestly If Mike would just stay out of the personnel side of things, hire a real GM to do that job, we'd be fine. Brown isn't a bad "owner" so much as he just has zero ability to see real talent and he sticks his opinion into everything that he shouldn't.

bleh.

I think this is the first time I've ever done the "we" thing when referencing a favorite team on FOFC. It used to be a pet peeve, but I guess that shows how much Lions fans feel that they've been held hostage as a fanbase.

What always pissed me off is that when Millen was hired all the "experts" went on to say what a great hire he was. He was a mediocre football "analyst" who had mediocre insight into the game. (Not to mention he had no relevant experience.)
