Ryche chimed in first with the correct answer to #5, and the bonus. He was a tackle, as you said.

I'll take a guess on #3. If they were still in Boston (I know they moved sometime in the 30's) , it should be Mr. Everything Jim Musick.

2. Donovan McNab?

I might have been first on the Groza question, if the web had responded quicker.

George Connor (sp?) did it as an OL and LB as well, but I'm assuming you are looking for someone before him because I think he did it around the same time as Bednarik.

Marmel

Bee, no.

It was the first person to do it, so it was earlier than that.

HornedFrog Purple

I think you need to check you stats again Marmel. I know Gifford wasn't the first because Connor did it before him.

Marmel
03-28-2003, 09:39 AM
Bee, you may be correct, but I cannot verify this anywhere.

Gifford was in the Pro Bowl in 53 for defense, and 54 for offense.

As far as I can tell, Connor played tackle on O and D from 50-53, and then strictly linebacker for 54 and 55.

I cannot seem to find his Pro-Bowl accomplishments, but if he went twice from 50-53, we would also have to see for what position he went for.

Still, I guess this brings up enough doubt that the question was not a good one.

Sorry.

From what I've been able to find out:

Connor was a all-pro "tackle" in 49 and 50. I don't know if that is offense or defense.

In 51, he was an all-pro OT and DT.
In 52, he was an all-pro OT and LB.
In 53, he was an all-pro OT and LB.

I had known Connor was a stud on both sides of the ball and played in that time period, but this kinda surprised me.

There is a possibility someone may have done it before him, but I can't find all-pro team lists for both offense and defense before 1951. I had actually thought Sammy Baugh had done it before then as a safety and QB, but I can't find info about the all-pro teams back then. I do know he led the NFL in interceptions as a safety the same year he led the league in passing as a QB, which is just too dang impressive. :D

Also, the question was worded to ask which player was a Pro-Bowler one year for defense, and then the next for offense. Connor may have been elected for his accomplishments on both sides of the ball each year.

Still, at least we learn something every day, huh?
