EL SEGUNDO, CA (AP) - Yesterday General Manager Rex and newly appointed Head Coach Lyndon Arredondo met with the press to discuss the team, and it's chances for a repeat as Division V Champions, as well as their thoughts on a possible promotion to D IV.
I had a chance to speak with them candidly about the team and it's future:
Dawn Kee (DK): How is the team handling the loss in the Qualification Match?
Rexallsc (RX): To be honest, I think another season is the best thing for the club. We've brought in seven new players since the start of last season, with their average age being 18 years old. We're committed long-term to the success of this organization, and the only way that will work is from the ground up. That being said, we're fully invested in the Youth Squad, as that's the only way we believe a Division V team can make it both on the field and off of it (economically).
DK: Seven new players? Which ones will impact the team the most?
RX: Well, we just acquired Alexandre Figueiredo Costa (passable form, passable defending, solid stamina) from Portugal, and although we probably overpaid for him a bit, we were impressed with his potential. He's a product of the Até os Come-mos Youth Squad, and we just felt that we needed a player of his caliber to help solidify our back line. He'll be playing this week along with Delmer Chance and Dennis Jean in the back.
However, our three offensive acquisitions are the most exciting, in my mind. Roffe Duvholt(18 years-old, passable form, passable scoring, solid stamina), a Swedish striker we picked up from another Division V squad, scored 2 goals and had one assist in his only game with the squad. We're perplexed as to why theyt let him go, and we think he has the chance to be a real star at ElSe. He'll be starting alongside club mainstay Sheldon Ridgeway up front.
DK: Earlier you spoke of Delmer Chance. Tell us about his role with the team.
RX: We acquired Delmer from a Division 4 team named The X-Ecutioners' Youth Squad, and he's immediately become our best defender. Delmer will start at the Central Back position this year, flanked by the aforementioned A.F. Costa and Dennis Jean. We expect big things out of Delmer...
DK: Where do you see filling the nets?
RX: Well, Wendell O'Neal is probably our most prolific player as far as goals are concerned. The kid (19) is a SOLID playmaker, and won the league scoring title last year. Unfortunately, he's going to miss a couple weeks due to a bad hip, so he won't see action on Opening Day. Edmund Tillman, one of our long time members of the club (he's 25) will pick up the slack from his Winger position, and send in some killer crosses.
DK: Tillman has commented that he's not going to be a part of a rebuilding, and would like to be moved. Is that true?
RX: I think Edmund was taken out of context a bit. Edmund is a very intense player, and he wants to share the field with players that have the same level of intensity. However, Edmund loves it here at ElSe, and would only leave if the situation were right. That being said, he is transfer listed, and his ID number is 8726891.
DK: Thanks Rex, I look forward to talking later in the season.
