View Full Version : Big house or small house and why?

I was driving home from work yesterday, and started wondering about houses and neighborhoods.
Would you rather live in a small, plain but nice home in a wealthy neighborhood (i.e., the smallest house on the block), or in a very large, average home in a subpar neighborhood, and why?

Probably the former, simply for the better resale value.

Small and nice neighborhood, particularly since I've had the case of 'too much space' living alone, so unless I had a massive family or spent enough time at home to make the rooms have some special purpose, it just makes you feel lonely and do more maintenance.
Depending on how subpar the neighborhood is, that alone might be enough to go the other way. I've lived in crappy neighborhoods, it is depressing and annoying.

I'll live in whichever house has the hottest neighbor girls with a swimming pool in their back yard.

Whatever neighborhood has the best school district.

As long as the house has the number of rooms I'd need, I'd rather have a smaller home with a large yard rather than a larger home with a small yard. A house hits a point where if you have that much room, it is just for show.

I don't really give a damn. I'm not afraid of living in bad neighborhoods..I can take care of myself. "Good neighborhoods" can be full of annoying people. I don't need a big house, though. I'll take the small house in the "good" neighborhood.

I'd take the big house in the subpar neighborhood.

I'd prefer a small house, but the neighborhood is the key for me -- it would need to be urban with shopping/food/entertainment options within walking distance. If it has that, I don't care what size the house is.

I learned this the hard way, I lived on a great street in a neighborhood that wasn't so nice......and took a hit when I resold. But we got into the neighborhood we wanted....out in the rural area where I grew up. Neighborhood makes it for me.

I prefer a lot of southern stadiums to the Big House. It's remarkably quiet for a stadium of its size.

I couldn't have stated my feelings on this any better. +1

I'm the only one who'd take the big house? Damn.

I don't know about the "wealthy" neighborhood, but I prefer something a bit cozier to something that is cavernous. When I lived in a studio for 7 years I had full view of everything. It was a secure feeling. Then I moved to a 1br & suddenly felt weird not seeing the door.

Give me the big house and the space to roam....I dont need to impress anyone with my neighborhood.
But Id much prefer a single wide trailer set in the middle of 100 acres

A "big enough" house in a good city. I want to be able to walk most everywhere, take mass transit to the further spots, etc. I don't know what the definition of "small" is to everyone.. I have a 650 sq ft condo (my wife and I) and I highly prefer it to the 1500 square foot house I had by myself in the far reaches of the suburbs.
