Serious question, here. On that catch by Shockey, he got hit and went down, but he was never touched while down. Is he down by NFL rule? God, I hate that rule. Can someone clarify why he was down on that play, or if he was? (2 plays before the touchdown)

... he got hit and went down,...

That's a tackle - he caught the ball, and the defender knocked him down.

My speakers are picking up the ambient stadium announcer from the Saints. That has to be the most annoying and repetitive person I have ever heard. Has anyone gone to a Saints game before? Is this a normal thing? Usually, I don't even notice, but he sounds like a he is trying to be a Michael Buffer starter kit with all the words going outtttttttt likeeeeeeeee thissssss.

I didn't see the play, but if the force of the contact makes him go down, then he is down.

So he doesn't have to be touched while his knee is down? What exactly is the rule?

How do 3 personal fouls offset?
Arz had 2, NO 1

well that wasn't a pleasant turn of events.

So if 11 players on one team beat the living crap out of 1 player for the other team, and that 1 player fights back, it is off setting personal foul penalties? Weird.

The rule is simple. If a defender forces the ball carrier to hit the ground, the ball carrier is down.

Regardless of how weak that roughing the passer call might have been, I absolutely HATE how roughing the passer calls wipe out INTs. The pass is in the air, the action of the pass is in motion, the the result of that action can be wiped out by something that happens after the pass starts is odd to me.

Tigercat

Gregg Williams defense looking good.

It was very close from getting 4 straight stops, 2 of which by turnover. You can't give Warner a second chance at a drive in the playoffs.

Possession hasn't changed yet though.

Yes but the action is away from the possession change, and doesn't affect possession change. I understand why it is enforced like that, I just think it hinders the flow of the game more than it helps.

A QB can air mail it to a safety 50 yards down field, and be completely bailed out by something that happens after that mistake.

I love this Saints team. I'm still not convinced they can beat a team with a real defense, but they are so much fun to watch.

I can't root for them against the Chargers but if they get to the Super Bowl and play anybody else it will be the most invested I've been in the game for a very long time.

Perfectly clean but that will be a rule change in the offseason. Something about how you can't hit a QB from the blind side on a change of possession anymore.

Seriously Warner just needs to GTF out of the way there. He's not going to tackle a 280lb lineman anyway, do the smart thing.

It's probably going to be mentioned during tv coverage about 20 times per game in both the Cardinals-Saints and the Cowboys-Vikings games, but in case they broadcasters haven't noticed yet: if the Cardinals don't win today, it'll be guaranteed that there will be a different NFC Champion for the nineth season in a row.

I admit I'm being kind of silly here, but the last Saints possession made me think of something.

It's 4th and 3, and the Saints go up to try to draw Arizona offsides. The Cards don't jump, and the play clock runs out. The Cards decline the penalty so there's less field for the punter. OK, I get that. But why don't the Saints send Brees out to try to get them to jump again? It's still 4th and 3. The Saints would've had nothing to lose by trying it again.

I understand that it probably means nothing in a 35-14 game, but it would've been a savvy and hilarious move by Sean Payton.

Well you consider it because 1) A player playing hurt is more likely to hurt himself worse, 2) Leinart looked OK in the 1st half, even if it was against a prevent D.

But if you suggest it to Warner and he yells your ear off like that, you send your leader and his energy back on the field.

So Tigercat who do you want at the dome next week?

Vikings. Saints pass block well on the edges mainly do to great schemes to hide Bushrod's limitations at LT. (As opposed to what may be the best interior line the NFL, they could block well in any scheme.) The talent of Ware and Spencer can bust up any good protection scheme if you don't have players that can man up on them.

Also, mobile QBs are the bane of the Saints D, Romo rolling out of the pocket killed the Saints early on.

Down by 31. 7:31 left. Why is punting a good idea?

jbergey22
01-16-2010, 06:25 PM
Either way the Saints will have the coaching advantage. The Cowboys have a lot of weapos on offense but some of them are used sparingly.(Felix Jones in particular)

AP could give the Saints a lot of problems but the Saints offense will score frequently. Id imagine Saints/Vikings will score in the 60s while Saints/Cowboys score in the lower 40s.

As a Saints fan living abroad, this makes me feel as close to home since I last held Saints season tickets (2006, my last football season living in the States). Hopefully this is the year. If the Saints keep playing like they did today, then all of my Saints dreams will have come true.

Thomkal
01-16-2010, 07:18 PM
well that was pretty ugly. Congrats to the Saints and their fans. And I have the feeling my beloved Cards will be looking for a new defensive coordinator in the offseason because that was two pathetic playoff defensive performances on their part.

Congrats to Kurt Warner if he decides to call it a career. Have to admit I had a lot of doubts when the Cards signed him and then played him over Leinart, but I can't imagine them making the playoffs the past two seasons without him.

If you're going to punt, while down 30+ points in the 4th quarter of a playoff game, you have little interest in trying to get back into the game. If so, why put the players through that? Just hit the showers.

Does the NFL not have neutral site clock operators? That 2nd down incompletion by Manning where he managed a 5 step drop, move and pump fake in 2 seconds was the longest seconds I've seen since TJ Duckett and the Spartans in 2001.

Just arrived at home. The Superdome was rocking throughout the 1st quarter, particularly after that Reggie TD run in the 1st quarter (which looked like something out of a video game.) It exploded again in the 2nd quarter with that flea flicker and really maxed out with the Reggie punt return. Very happy to see Reggie have a great game. It made the whole experience a lot more fun.

Something that most NFL fans and many analysts miss is how good the Saints run D (when the D is healthy) gets as games go along. Casual viewers of Saints games see Ronnie Brown, or Turner, or whoever gash us early in games and think the Saints are VERY vulnerable to the run, and teams just give up on it. More often what has happened is teams gave up on the run after the Saints started to shut it down. If you take away the one 70 yard run, Arizona ran the ball 14 times for 31 yards with a long of 7 yards.

When Sed Ellis is in the lineup, the Saint's are amazingly stout against the run once the defense gets its act together. I think it has to do with Williams making adjustments to overcome our weakness on the DL. It takes a while in some games, but when he has a good DT in Ellis to work with, he gets it done eventually.

Yeah, for obvious reasons, I was focusing on Sedrick Ellis tonight and he played extremely well against the run and the pass. He was consistently pushing his man/men back and helping collapse the pocket.

Im not prepared to argue how good/bad the Saints run defense gets as the game goes on but I do know they gave up 122.2 YPG with a 4.5 Avg while being a team that was in the lead most of the season.

Football outsiders has them ranked 29th in rushing defense.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2009 DEFENSE EFFICIENCY RATINGS (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef)

From the 4/5 times Ive seen the Saints this year it seems teams give up on the run because the Saints offense is so potent that they get 10-14 point leads so teams think they have to play catch up.

A lot of that occurred when Ellis was hurt or severely hobbled. Look at the Dolphins game as an example. After a 68 yard run early in the first quarter, they couldn't average more than 2 yards a carry. This was the best running team at the time, at home, with a lead for most of the game.

This is also when Sed Ellis was healthy. Don't let runs early in games against the Saints or how bad the Saints run defense was without Ellis fool you, Greg Williams can find a way to stop the run. I am not saying that the Saints are good at stopping the run overall, I am just saying that I am not sure anyone should plan on a team beating the Saints with the running game in the second half of games.

jbergey22
01-16-2010, 11:47 PM
I remember that scheme. There was a segment on the NFL Network about it. One of the only teams that could stop the Dolphins run attack for any part of the game.

They are kind of the opposite the Vikings in that aspect. Its very difficult to run on them early in games but as the game opens up a bit you can find some holes running against the Vikings.

Just back from the Colts game. Great crowd tonight...really got behind the team.

Big plays in this game. The TD before the half, Garcon's amazing forced fumble, some good stuff.

Biggest story was Colts D. Ray Rice just didn't have room to run. Flacco desperately needs a receiver so he isn't constantly making 2 yard dump offs to Rice.

Ravens D played well mostly, holding the Colts to 20 (though the Colts did make some big offensive plays), but their offense was horrible. I'm sure it's a mix between great Colts D and horrible Ravens O.

Can't wait for next Sunday now.

I really don't know who I want to win today...

We lost to the Cowboys, and I'd love to get revenge- we were so banged up in that game, and still a dropped TD (damnit Devery) away from being tied late in 4th- and that was the worst game they played all season. I think given another shot we can take em. That being said- I'd be happy not playing Demarcus Ware again...and what tigercat said earlier, I don't want to play a QB that can scramble that always seems to get us on big 3rd downs.

All season long I wanted to play the Vikings to prove we could beat them- now we might have a shot.

Either way- to win the superbowl you have to beat the best, so it's going to be a good game and I can't wait to get there- think I'll head to Nola on Friday to get an extra day to take it all in.

Speaking of- I stopped by Mother's before the game to get a po-boy and I sat next to Gruden, well I sat at the bar, and he was at the table behind me...when we walked in I was like wait- is that Chucky, sure enough it was him- he was eating so I didn't want to bug him to get a picture, but still very cool.

Yeah, Romo's imploding "as usual"* with a 11-15, 117 yard performance. It has nothing to do with his offensive line, no running support, and an awful defense giving up 7 yards per play. I guess we're back to pretending there is only one player on every team.

So, I assume everyone outside of Minnesota is rooting for NO next week?

There will always be exceptions, but for the most part, unless one is a Vikes fan or would enjoy relentless 24/7 sycophantic Favre coverage for two solid weeks leading up to the SB, they're probably rooting for the Saints. I think a lot of people are counting on the Saints to make the media coverage leading up to the SB slightly less nauseating.

As a Saints fan though, I have to say, I'd have preferred the Cowboys over Minny. The Saints are a reflection of their head coach and are an incredibly cocky team. The Saints NEED people telling them they can't do something in order to play well. Before all their superlative performances this year (Giants, NE, Arizona), they had significant pockets of the media openly doubting their ability. With the Cowboys, they'd have the built-in motivator of already having lost to Dallas. With Minnesota, I don't think there's going to be any good motivation angles for them, and the Saints haven't shown that they're mature enough to play well when the media is impressed with them.

As such I think the Saints lay an egg next week and lose, but I do hope I'm wrong.

Yea I am not sure "deserving" is the right word. No one "deserves" their favorite team winning anything. Now do the Saints fans support their team better than anyone else in the NFL today? Sure. Would a win mean more to Saints fans than any collective group of NFL fans in the country? Sure. So it would be a nice story for many people outside of New Orleans to see also.

As a Saints fan, a small bonus to me would be that the Saints being a nice story angle would go away with a Super Bowl win. All that talk muddies the water of actual football conversation.

Jets in position now to take the lead with a td!

Jets have played an excellent game, ALL Defense, which as long as their D keeps playing like this for one more quarter, they can hang around and one drive might give them the win.

I'm glad that, though the score may be low, we finally got a real game. 7 games in the playoffs so far and only one has been competitive so far.

What? Am I wrong? Would, or would not, a win advancing to the Super Bowl mean more to Lions fans than to Saints fans?

J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS.

I really don't care who the Colts play, both are solid teams. But I would love to see the smug Rivers go one and done.

I haven't seen the Jets play much this season, but for a team that plays to win via defense and field position they have a sub-par punter.

The Jets punter has a hamstring injury. He missed last weeks game because of it, and Jay Feely filled in as punter last week.

Wow. Chargers fans booing. Pats fans booed last week. Colts fans booed for a few weeks. Is this the decade of the fair weather fan?

Two yard run handoff to Tomlinson, who doesn't seem to be the LT of old, might have something to do with it.

Especially after that pathetic show of offense in the 3rd quarter by the Chargers and the score going the wrong way for the first time all day.

I think it is absurd for a fan of any team to say their team wants it more or it would mean more to them.

My list of teams to root for in the playoffs may continue to shrink.

It was GB, SD, and NO.

If SD loses I'll be down to one team I'd be willing to root for.

For the most part I would agree with you (especially concerning the Saints), but I believe that teams that win often develop a bit of apathy over the years (Red Wings and Braves come to mind).

Outside of being able to beat the Colts, Rivers is the Romo of the AFC. Until Rivers grows up, I would never pick them to win a playoff game if he is their QB.

Yeah, I have to admit I was shocked when they showed his playoff stats. Just 7 TDs and 7 Ints and only 56% completion. He's 1-2 in TD/INT today.

I never know what do make of this team. They can still win this game though. I don't know if the Jets can put it away completely.
