What the fuck! All of a sudden I have a million pop-ups, and this stupid ass thing keeps popping into my screen. It's this little bar at the bottom of my screen, and it appears at the top of my screen. This thing is the source of all the pop-up ads. As soon as this shit started showing up, the pop-ups came. Any ideas how to get rid of it? And why is all this shit auto-downloading and installing? I can't find any of this in add/remove in the control panel, and I can't figure how to get rid of this crap. Help please.
Thanks in advance.

and make sure your security is pretty high up there. Mine was on low and I started to have those problems. I moved it up to medium and I don't get anything else installed without my approval....

Try running Ad-Aware. It's a nifty little program you can run to remove spyware installed on your computer.

Thanks RawIsDan. That ad-aware is really useful. One of the things it found really is scary. Malware, browser and sytem hijacker, installs expensive porn dialers, cloaks your registry. That explains all those porn connection thigns I keep getting. Thanks again.

Ad-Ware is a great program! I use it once a week to check for spyware.

I like Opera. It has a nice easy option to refuse any pop-up ads that I don't click to initiate.

If you up the security, won't that screw up your ability to use this site?
not at all for me..... I have it set on "medium-high" and have no problems with this or any site.....

Netscape 7 has a built-in popup blocker. They admit you might still get some pop-ups, but I haven't seen one in the months that I've been using it. You actually get a little icon that appears when a popup is blocked, and you can allow exceptions for specific sites.

Did anything get installed that you didn't want before you did this? If so how did you get it off? It seems to like to come back sometimes.

Not if you add the url to the board to your trusted sites.

if its coming back try searching for it on google. You should be able to find a way to permanently remove it. FWIW, I think that spyware that actually alters a part of your computer a virus, and it should be treated as such.

Ok guys, I have a computer problem, I went kazzaing unprotected and picked up a virus..... It seems the only problem is that certain programs crash upon opening..... I installed the version of Norton I had, and that just made it worse. I ended up doing a system restore and am back to "Thursday" on my computer, but I picked up the virus undetected on Wednesday. How can I get this off?

do you know the name of the virus?
if so, you can get on the web and find out how to get rid of it.
what version of windows? Xp I assume since you did a restore.
usually when I think I have a virus I first check win.ini and system.ini some virsus may hide there.
I hate to say this, but you should never surft the net without decent virus protection.
You could try to do a scan from the web at one of those webscan sites, or if you have another computer, install virus protection on it, and hook up the drive. dont make it the boot drive though. then you can run a scan on it and get rid of the virus.
If you dont know the name of it, and cant do any of the above, your best best would just be to format.
Here's what Norton put out before I restored the old settings....
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ShellEx.exe is infected with the Backdoor.Trojan virus
I went and found some anti-trojan software and hopefully it takes care of it......

I keep having a problem. Something keeps automatically changing my homepage to a search engine instead of here. Any ways to fix that?

A couple months ago I fixed a friends laptop for her - her son had downloaded just about every spyware infected program he could find, it seems. it was a LOT of work to get everything off, and I think there's still one instance of gator that I couldn't wipe out. some of those programs are really, really tricky to get rid of.
it was a lot of running ad-ware, checking programs in the add/remove programs that didn't make seem kosher (lots of google), disabling startup stuff in msconfig, even some registry edits.
if you're not really comfortable doing these on your own, it may be time to just reformat.

If you want to wipe out spyware...use this program...
http://security.kolla.de/
It's called SpyBot. It's free...and it completely cleaned out my computer. Even after using Ad-Aware, SpyBot still found a bunch of stuff that Ad-Aware missed. It's great.
It'll save you a lot of work, DD. :)
