Its sad, but the first thing I though of was:

You know, I actually thought he was already dead. Then I realized that I was thinking of either Victor French or Nipsey Russell.

Amazing player, annoying commentator. Had a total hard-on for Denver in the 80s, was hard to watch a game with him.
But again, great player, and nice acting career. RIP, Merl.
