Places that intrigue me:

Africa – Ethiopia, Kongo
N. America – Any decent tribe
Europe – Byzantium, Wallachia
Asia – Sukhothai, Brunei/Aceh/Makassar, Ming,
Also – A horde nation would be fun

Sukhotai or Oriat Horde would be interesting.

Ming would too, curious to see how the inevitable split would go down.

I would love to take Kongo the day it becomes Catholic, but how different would that be by the end to my Songhai dynasty? Ethiopia against the world sounds like fun, as the only Christian nation in 1444 in Africa, but again, how different would that be to my Georgian, Trebizond, Naxos campaigns?

The same would be true of Wallachia and Byzantium. I had two Baltic campaigns, and I’ve been in Ireland, Italy, and twice in Iberia, twice in the HRE, and such.

I’ve only done two Muslim campaigns – Songhai and Granada. I thought about doing a Muslim nation as my next choice in CK2 with all of the dlc Sons of Abraham and Sword of Islam, because that looks very fleshed out. Better than EU4 frankly.

I’ve never done North Africa, or a traditional middle eastern Arabic nation, so that would be a fun dynasty. Again, I suspect it’ll be my next CK2 dynasty though, so I’ma skip that for now.

Many of the updates to realms in EU3 expansions, like the hordes, republics, Ming, and Japan I’ve not run, and versions of them are incorporated into EU4 as well. That’d be fun, and we just had an expansion for Native Americans, so maybe it’s finally time to take one for a spin.

I’ve never done campaigns in Russia, North Africa, North or South America, Indian Subcontinent, and so forth. I’ve played one Hindu nation, and other than that it’s all Christian and Islam. So perhaps it’s time for another faith. But what are the game differences between Hindu or Buddhist other than a few minor bonuses. (Buddhism and Confucianism are exactly the same bonuses even). What’s the value of even playing them?

So my motivation for playing a non-Abrahamic religion is not strong, because the game mechanics from EU1 are still the same – a few minor bonuses. For Confucianism/Buddhism, you get +2 tolerance of heretics (in your own faith) and +1 of heathens. Whoop de doo.

In conclusion, I have a lot of experience as the lonely Orthodox voice against the Muslims, so Wallachia and Byzantium, while fun, would play into that. Here are some ideas that appeal to me, now that I have been writing.

Take Portugal, and turn it into a historically accurate model of itself at its colonial height.

Take a Malaysian power and create the nation of Malay, and built an Indies superpower (a la Mataram Rising –the most fun I’ve ever had as a dynasty.)

Play as one of the tribes of North America, and build a nation. Can I fend off the Europeans?

Play as another white Orthodox light against the dark. (Ethiopia, Wallachia, Byzantium, etc)

Play as a horde nation or Ming – for a new experience. Perhaps the Timurids?

Abe Sargent

I love taking one province nations and growing them. Portugal might be too easy. Expanding it realistically across the world might be rough, but it starts out in a nice place. You can ignore Europe entirely in order to focus on the goal.

I’d love to do a Malay dynasty, but I doubt I could ever truly repeat my favorite CK/EU experience of all time. So we’ll skip it.

That leaves Orthodox nation, horde/Ming or North American tribe….

I think Ethiopia might actually be too easy – multiple provinces, and can feed on people to the South for a while until big enough to start hitting the Mamluk force to the north. Byzantium is not the thing for me right now, but I have the purple phoenix DLC and that might be fun later.

That leaves Wallachia as the nation of choice for Orthodox. And no Catholic nation stands up.

So its either Wallachia or a non-Christian campaign.

This my first EU4 game. I didn’t pick it up at first. I wanted to wait until patches were released, but I’m excited. Most of the changes I’ve read about I fully endorse. So I am playing on normal difficulty with no bonuses or lucky nations.

I’ve decided to make an unusual audible. I’m not feeling any of these right now. I’m not even doing a one-province nation. Nope, we’re doing this easy style. I like the idea of a Portuguese themed dynasty, but let’s not do it as Portugal…

So who will I be?

The Sultanate of Oman

Long may Sultan Mahzum Nabhan reign! His 14 year old heir is strong, Sulayman Nabhan.

Our Bedouin state welcomes foreigners and trade, while we celebrate our Shi’ite traditions.

I am the Dapir of the Sultanate. We are nested along the coast of the great Arabian Peninsula, land of great wonders and mysteries. It is a land both harsh and welcoming.

I have served the Nabhans for more than 20 years. My family’s inheritance is to serve in the role of Dapir, the great scribe and advisor to our nation. Our current Sultan is not the most capable scion of his family. He has just 1/1/2 skills. (Admin, Diplo, Military). But we have high hopes for Sulayman.

Oman is a great and mighty nation, divided into five districts. We are lucky to be free of many of the local squabbles, so we can get involved when we want, but we can also ignore our neighbors and focus on trade, building, and exploration. Our family has several dreams for the nation.

1) We need an alliance with a major power.
2) We want to become the premier trading nation in the Indian Ocean. There are many great nations along the area, but we want to be the dominant one.
3) We have to control a proper navy in order to meet our goals.
4) We would like to colonize the Indian Ocean.
5) We need to fend off the overly hostile Yemen. They are blatantly seeking our elimination. Probably because they are Sunni.
6) Similarly, the adjacent Najd is also very aggressively looking towards us. Both neighbors are Sunni, and it gets a little too hot here.
7) We eventually want to see Mecca in Shi’ite hands.
8) In light of these things, it seems necessary to build our nation militarily, as well as diplomatically.
9) Nearby one province nation Haasa is Shi-ite as well, and could be a good early ally.

And with Allah’s help, we will accomplish these things!

Here are the five districts of Oman: All are Shi’ite and Bedouin and have level 2 forts.

Muscat is the capital of mighty nation. It’s taxbase of 5 is the second d highest in the Peninsula, behind just Mecca itself at 6. Medina has a 4, and there are a few 3s (Tabouk, Asir, Mocha, and Suhar).Muscat is a Important Center of Trade and receives many benefits including better navies and trade. The spice trade is rife here and we make 12.60 ducats in taxes and production. It is next to our province sof Suhar, Nizwa and Dhofar.

Dhofar is southwest of Muscat and along the coast. It is our only border with Yemen’s province of Mahra. The spice trade continues here and with a tax value of 2, it makes 7.32 ducats for us.

Nizswa – The Arid province of Nizwa is island of Muscat and Dhofar, and next to Suhar and the Najd province of Liwa. As an Arid district, it suffers from attrition penalties. It also has a tax power of 2 and spices and thus features 7.32 ducats.

Those three provinces all send trade to the Gulf of Aden trade node. The next two ship it to the Indus one.

Suhar – Along the coast northwest of Muscat is this wool making province. With a tax value of 3, it has the second highest tax base in our area, but the lower value of its trade goods means it gives us just 5.00 ducats. Adjact to Muscat, Nizwa, Najd’s in Liwa, and our last province, Qawasim, Suhar is strategically located to assist more places in Oman than any other, and to strike at Najd.

Qawasim – The little peninsula that creates the south edge of the Persian Gulf is this small province. Next to Liwa, and Beni Yas of Najd’s fame, as well as our own Suhar, it’s a bit exposed. With a tax base of 2, and another set of wool, it clocks in at 3.95 ducats.

We have two merchants out – one gathering money from the Gulf of Aden node and the other siphoning it over there from the Indus one. Yemen is currently the dominant presence in the Aden node.

Abe Sargent
02-07-2014, 04:42 PM
Najd has six provinces, and Yemen seven. Both are not friendly, so we need to secure our border before we begin heading out there.

Oman is in a good position to dominate. We are making 2.46 ducats monthly. We have 9920 manpower spare with a max of 11840. We have a completely legitimate Sultan. We need to raise our stability and take some plans for ourselves, which may happen here soon.

We have no claims on any other land.

Just five nations in the world are Shi’ite. More than 40 are Sunni. We need to change that.

We have 4000 infantry and 1000 cavalry in Muscat. We have a fleet of 8 ships, including 3 transports and 5 light ships. We have a naval limit of 10 and an army one of 7.

You can easily see the relative locations of the major players - Haasa, Najd, Yemen, Hedjaz, Oman, and then Mamluks, Ethiopia, Adal, Ajuuraan, Qara Koyunlu and others are in the outer layer of the area.

Interesting that the game considers Oman to be Shia. Actually, Omanis are mostly Ibadi (http://islam.uga.edu/ibadis.html), neither Shia nor Sunni. Its a purist but quite tolerant form of Islam.

Oman is an interesting place--I'll look forward to reading this

I order the light ships to protect trade in Aden. I disband the transport Cogs. We don’t need them yet.

I suggest that the Sultan become a general and put him over our army. I order the army to Suhar.

We declare Yemen and Najd as rivals. We send an alliance offer to Haasa. We expect that to result in an affirmative response. We also dispatch an envoy to Shi’ite nation Qara Qoyunlu.

14 Nov, 1444 – We hear back that both diplomatic efforts have succeeded.

I accept a mission to free our comrades in Beni Yas against Najd. We have gained a CB against them. I order 2000 infantry mercenaries assembled in Qawasim

Nov 28 – I accept a marriage offer from Haasa.

Dec 7 – I accept an alliance offer from Qara Koyunlu

Both Najd and Yemen have made us their rivals too.

Abe Sargent

Allah favors the bold. He gives strength to those who strike in his name.

5 Jan, 1445 – I declare war on Najd for Beni Yas. They are already trying to convert the Shi’ite province of Liwa. We cannot stand for this!

11 Jan – We win a skirmish with our navy in the Straits of Hormuz.

14 Jan – Good news and bad news. Our Sultan died today, long may he reign in our hearts and minds in Allah’s repose! Our new Sultan is Sulayman Nabhan, who is 4/4/3 and much more glorious!

19 Jan – Our army arrives and begins the siege of Beni Yas – troops are being frantically assembled by Najd.

24 Jan – Qara Koyunlu now guarantees Haasa’s independence.

10 April – A large force of 6000 Najdi troops arrives to force us out.

10 May – They lose and we continue the siege.

15 May – 11000 Qara Koyunlu forces have arrived inland in the Peninsula and are attacking Najd there.

3 Dec – The Mameluks joined an alliance with Najd.

22 Dec – We get walls breaches, and I order an assault

18 Jan, 1446 - - We have captured Beni Yas.

I order us to Qatar.

2 May – Qara Koyunlu captured another Najdi province.

7 May – We take Beni Yas and force Najd to break their alliance with Mamluks and we get a little money.

We gain prestige from both the war and the completed mission.

Beni Yas – West along the coast of the peninsula from Qawasim is this province we captured from our foes. I spend some admin power to make this a core. It has a tax value of 1 and trades wool. It is next to our foes in Qatar. It now landlocks their province of Liwa, which is surrounded by us.

Abe Sargent
02-07-2014, 11:53 PM
I dismand our mercs.

I boost our stability twice by spending some power we had stored. Our better king is helping a lot with that.

I accept a mission to forge a claim on Qatar.

We discovered an agent of Yemen’s forging a claim in Dhofar.

25 May – Hedjaz accepts a royal marriage offer from us.

29 May – Adal accepts our offer as well. That’s good, Adal is Yemen’s ally.

26 June – I accept an alliance offer from Hedjaz.

I send a diplomat out to begin to fabricate a claim in Qatar.

I proclaim a guarantee for Haasa too.

5 July – We get an event for a claim on Liwa. Perfect!

16 Aug – The mamluks are guaranteeing the Najd’s independence.

23 Oct – I hire a Treasurer to increase our admin and tax modifier.

29 Oct – Haasa and Qara Koyunlu are now in an alliance too.

I order 2000 troops in Dhofar built using the blood money from the war.

Abe Sargent
02-08-2014, 12:26 AM
7 Nov – Hedjaz declares war on Yemen.

28 Nov – I accept Hedjaz’s call to arms and order the army in Beni Yas to Dhofar.

21 Feb, 1447 – We arrive in Mahra to begin a siege with all 7000 of our troops.

We are currently making 1.68 ducats monthly with the upkeep for our units and the advisor.

14 May – We lose badly against a superior Yemeni force and are ousted.

10 June – We get a National Epic for a decade for our people.

6 July – We gain a claim on Qatar and finish the mission

The next one chosen is to take Qatar.

24 July - We captured some Yemeni ships in a few battles.

4 Aug – Their forces begin a siege in Dhofar. I order our troops to try them out. They just lost a battle in Mahra to Hedjaz, so I might be able to force them.

13 Sept – And we do win. I order our forces to Mahra.

11 Jan, 1448 – Beni Yas is now officially a core province.

2 Feb – I increase our stability to max

9 Jul – I lose 25 piety to bring in men of science to our land form Christian lands.

1 Aug – Hedjaz lost a major battle against the combined forces of Yemen and Adal.

17 Nov – We capture Mahra. I order our forces into deeper Yemen.

12 jan, 1449 – We lose in the siege of deeper.

20 Feb – We capture another Yemeni ship – we now have our max ten ships.

12 Jun – We win again and drive the Yemeni forces back.

16 jan, 1450 – We assault and capture another province.

22 April – I sue for peace with Yemen independently of Hedjaz, who is holding us back. The overall warscore is +1 but ours is really high. We take Mahra, even though it makes us look a little bad. I could have taken just Hadhramaut, which is better, but I wanted the contiguous district. We get some financial stuff too.

I disband our mercs.

Mahra – Beduin and Sunni, this 1 tax base province just makes fish. Plus its Arid. It gives a nice land connection to Yemen in Hadhramaut. Very little money from it. I order a core for here instead of a missionary – I don’t want the added revolt risk. It’s already at 10%.

Abe Sargent
02-08-2014, 01:17 AM
We should be able to increase tech soon in military and diplomacy.

10 May – I offer military access to Haasa

15 June – We are given military access too.

4 July – I choose to gain piety and lose some ducats when I take out infidels in Muscat.

13 July – I send a diplomat to Haasa to increase our relations

25 March, 1451 – Yemen took Asir from Hedjaz in peace.

10 Aug – A rebellion begins in Mahra

29 Aug – We put it down

Jan 2, 1452 – We have enough diplomacy and I am now tech 4. We can now build docks and marketplaces.

17 Apr – Another 1000 cavalry is finished and moves to Mahra.

1 May – We have enough to purchase tech level 4, military style! It bumps our military and we can build armories

4 July – Mahra is now a core province. I order a missionary here.

1 Sept – We gain tech in Admin and are now level 4.

We can now add a group of ideas, our first!

Which ones do I like?

Trade Ideas – let’s enhance our trade presence!

Offensive Ideas or Quality Ones – To enhance our troops in various ways!

Exploration Ideas – Let’s get ready to explore!

Espionage Ideas – I’m a fan of spies and such!

Admin Ideas – Good for building our nation!

It’s not really a question – say hello to Exploration!

Abe Sargent
02-08-2014, 02:35 AM
We have a maxed relations with Haasa.

I order my army to Beni Yas to prepare us to take Qatar.

With my low manpower, I order 2000 army mercs there to meet us.

1 Jan, 1453 – I declare war against Najd for Qatar.

20 Jan – A siege of Qatar has begun

5 Apr – They defeat Haasa and begin a siege there.

30 May – They break of the siege at 7000 troops from Qara Koyunlu arrive to siege their deeper territory.

20 Sept – They return to restart the siege in Haasa’s one province of Al Hasa.

6 Jan, 1454 – We capture Qatar. I order my force to break their siege in Al Hasa.

9 Jan – They break ff their siege to run away from my forces, so I change and order them to Liwa to begin a siege there.

25 Mar – I get an early walls breached result and I order an assault

4 Apr – We capture Liwa. I order my troops back into Najd territory

The Mamluks are in the war too, apparently. I must have missed they had reupped their alliance.

1 Jun – I order to win this war quickly with 15k Mamluks troops besieging Al Hasa, I order a quick assault and capture Najd, the capital.

7 June – I force peace now for Qatar and some gold from Mamluks. I could have pushed for Liwa against just Najd, but with Mamluks breathing down the neck, it was the best time for peace.

I gain a lot of prestige and power in various areas for our missions.

I order the mercs disbanded and our forces to Qatar.

Qatar – The Sunni Bedouins here make wool and have a taxvalue of 2. I order a core here. We are adjacent to Al Hasa with our friends Haasa.

Abe Sargent
02-08-2014, 10:57 AM
20 July – Haasa agrees to become our vassal.

Post war, I have 53 ducats and I’m making 1.4 a month.

29 July – Yeman has Adal has a protectorate and has guaranteed the independence of Haasa. Both of us are expanding.

I missed but in that war Ethiopia became a protectorate of Mamluks.

15 Aug – I send a diplomat to set up in Ajuuraan, in the Horn of Africa, to begin to build relations.

24 Aug - I order a Marketplace built in Muscat

Our next mission is claim Hadhramuaut from Yemen, so I send a diplomat over ot do just that!

6 Jan, 1455 – Yemen is now allied with the Timurids.

8 Jan - The Mamluks have become the overlords of new vassal Najd. Uh oh.

Already, the will of Allah has grown strong. Trebizond was taken out by Aq Qoyunlu. Crimea and Qara Koyunlu have reduced Georgia to one province.

I currently have a 78% positive piety. It gives me better morale for my forces, better missionary strength and better fort defense.

We are currently ranked 13th in the world (Qara K is 14th). It’s France, Timurids, Burgundy, Ming, Austria, Ottomans, Castile, Mamluks, Tuscany, Lithuania, Portugal, Milan, Oman, Qara K and England wrapping up the top 15 scores.

Abe Sargent
02-08-2014, 12:32 PM
13 May - We gain a trade CB against Yemen when they threaten our trade.

4 July – the captured province of Mahra is now Shi’ite.

Having a nice ruler really helps monarch points. We are gaining more than 100 a year in two categories.

21 Oct – We have claimed the province of Hadhramaut in Yemen. We gain prestige and military power from our mission being completed. Our next mission is to Conquer Hadhramaut!

Now that Mahra is fully of our faith and a core province, we get 3.37 ducats from her and her revolt risk is gone.

We send our diplomat to enhance relations with the Ottomans

5 Dec – Revolt in Qatar

12 Dec - Is now defeated

11 March, 1456 – We invest in the national idea of Colonial Ventures

2 May – I order a marketplace in Suhar.

15 May – Qatar is now a core province and I order our missionary there.

2 Aug – Our piety increased in an event to send away infidel merchants. With it maxed, we get +3% missionary strength, +25% morale of armies and +254% fort defense.

While we now have colonists, we have no where to send them

5 March, 1457 – Our relations with Ajuuraan have reached 100. We order our diplomat to the nation of Kilwa, on the coast of Africa.

Our army is ordered to Mahra and another 1000 cavalry are built here.

16 July, 1458 – I choose our nation in offensive strength, and for 10 years we gain better armies.

30 July – I order our diplomat to return from the Ottomans

11 Sept – Qatar converts. We now get 4.52 ducats from it.

Abe Sargent

28 Sept _ I declare war on Yemen for Hadhramaut

I order our army in!

24 jan, 1459 – I assault and take it after their morale dropped badly. I order them to Aden

20 Feb – I hire 2000 mercs in Mahra

We have a siege of Najran by Hedjaz forces and they beat the Yemeni army in Mecca.

14 May – I break off a unit and hit their army in Sana’a and win.

17 June – We pursued them to Mocha and broke them.

8 Aug – I choose to prepare for Ramadan.

29 Oct – Aden falls and I move our troops ot the siege in Mocha.

4 jan, 1460 – Najran falls to Hedjaz.

17 Feb – After a nasty assault, we take Sana’a after Hedjaz forces assist us.

6 Mar – Relations with Kilwa are up to 100.

5 May – After a quick assault, Yemen recaptures Najran

3 June – We capture Mocha after an assault of our own and move into Najran via Sana’a.

3 July – Hedjaz is besieging Asir, their own province.

2 Aug – An event off our advisor triggered and we gained some monarch power.

15 Nov – We get walls breached on Najran and assault it. It has fallen to us

I order our troops to Asir.

9 Jul, 1461 – Asir falls o Hedjaz.

Now we’ve pushed them into a corner. I take both Hadhramaut and Aden from Yemen as well as trade stuff.

I order our army to Hadhramaut.

Hadhramaut – 2 tax value, the Bedouin, Sunnis here live in an Arid coastal wool-producing state next to Mahra ,Najran, Aden and Sana’a. I order a core here.

Aden – Also 2 tax value, another spices province with Sunni Bedouin roots. I order a core here too. Aden is also a center of trade.

Allah smiles on our efforts this day!

Allah's will is for us to explore.

I select Achieve Religious Unity as our next mission

We unlock the Quest for the New World idea – that enables us to have explorers and conquistadors.

We also upgrade to Admin Tech 5 – That gives us the ability to build temples and constables.

Meet Umar Khoury, a Conquistador we just purchased! We order two Cogs built with 2000 cavalry led by Umar Khoury to load it up.

12 Nov - We see some land in the Seychelles so I order our troops to disembark and explore it.

24 Nov – We have discovered the island of Mahe! But it’s too far away from our people to colonize – 171 range and we have just 160. I order the fleet to return. I should have enough diplo power to recruit an explorer in a month or two, and then I’ll give this fleet a trio of barques and begin full on exploring.

2 Jan, 1462 – Meet Ya’rub Khoury, our new explorer! The Khoury brothers will explore the Indian Ocean for the greater glory of Oman and Allah!

28 Feb – We lose 20 legitimacy in order to submit to the Iman.

20 April – We have discovered Diego Suarez Bay.

12 June – And now the Coast of Tamatave. I order our fleet to return for docking and repairs.

25 July – I choose not to tax the clergy in an event. We gain piety and prestige.

1 Aug – I order a marketplace built in Dhofar.

22 Nov – Our forces land in Boina, on the north side of a large island. Native there assault us. They have 9000 aggressive and ferocious natives there!

30 Nov – We lose against them and Umar Khoury and our troops die! I order the fleet to do some exploring, and 2000 troops built to replace them.

7 Jan, 1463 – We discover the Mascarene Plateau to the SE of Mahe.

Umar Khoury made it back alive! We assign him to another unit

This time we just use 1000 infantry – easy to replace.

Abe Sargent

2 Apr – We have a rebellion in Hadhramaut

12 Apr – And we put it down

11 June – Our explorer discovers the Coast of Tamatave, on the east cost of the large island we found. We also discover the area of Antananarivo. It also has 9000 angry natives.

17 July – Hadhramaut is now a core so we order our Missionary to it.

Mahe is now in our colonial range, so I order our colonist to the island.

25 July, We discover Taolagnaro Bay, to the south of the large island called Madagascar. I order the fleet to return. We’ll come back later to explore the southern area some more.

27 July – Rebels in Aden!

27 Aug – The rebels are put down

16 Oct – Aden is now a core.

4 Jan, 1464 – While sailing near to India, we find the Equatorial Counter Current around the Maldives. They have 1000 aggressive and ferocious natives there.

14 April – I order a Temple in Muscat

1 June – We purchase Level 5 Military Tech. We get Muslim Duel Infantry upgrades and extra combat width and infantry shock increases.

4 June – We order the Formalizing of Scales, Weights and Measures. It costs some Admin Power and we gain a +5% tax modifier for the rest of the campaign

30 July – We discover the Western Equatorial Counter Current east of Mahe.

2 Feb – We discover the Western Indian Ocean South Equatorial Current

14 July – We discover the Chagos Archipelago

1 Aug – I have a nasty event. Execute a popular bailiff or let him continue despite his bad rule. Both are bad results – either I lose a stability of 33 prestige. I choose the prestige.

5 Jan, 1467 – We discover the island of Diego Garcia, south of the Maldives, in the Chagos Archipelago. It has no natives.

7 Jan – The colonial company responsible for our colony in Mahe has shipped in marriageable women, and it increases by 200 people.

23 Jan – Mahe will be a fishing economy.

12 May – I order a Constable in Muscat

25 June – We uncover the Madagascar Basin.

I return to Mahe and begin to move down the African coast.

15 Dec – We discover the Coast of Natal

17 Jan, 1468 – And the Coast of Transki

16 Feb – Aden is now Shi’ite, we finish our mission, and we gain a lot of power.

Lots of land in the Timurid Empire is under rebel control. I can see 23000 rebels besieging a local villa.

Our next mission is to conquer Mocha and take it from Yemen.

27 May, while sailing along the coast, the final section of Madagascar is revealed – Menabe, a land of 9000 natives as well.

9 July 0 We discover the Coast of Ciskei as well as Xhosa, a mainland local unclaimed area with 7000 nasty natives.

25 Aug – We arrive in the Cape of Good Hope. We uncover another mainland place, Lesser Namaqualand. Just 500 natives, but aggressive to the max.

2 Jan, 1469 – I wasn;t planning on hitting Yemen again this quickly, but with their major ally, the Timurids, in huge trouble, this is the perfect time.

I declare war for Mocha!

I order our 10000 troops into Mocha to fight Yemen’s 5000 defenders.

25 Jan – We win in Mocha

23 Apr – I land some forces on Sumatra, the island controlled by Yemen.

11 May – After a quick assault Mocha falls. I order that army to Sana’a

21 May – We arrive in Socotra and defeat the 1000 troops there.

27 May – We also win in Sana’a

7 July – We win a huge naval battle against the Timurids off the Coast of Oman.

I order a fort built in Mahe

10 Jan, 1470- An assault on Sana’a fails. Ugh.

21 Feb, 1471 – Failed assault on Najran. Grrr…

8 May – Najran falls.

29 June – Asir is taken by Hedjaz.

Every Yemeni province is in our hands. Too bad the Timurids are in charge of the war, or else I could force Yemen into a bad spot here.

We take Mocha and Socotra

Mocha – Up the coast from Aden in the Red Sea is this coffee trading area. With a tax value of 3 and Sunni Bedouin culture, it’s a wealthy area.

Socotra – This island, off the coast of the Horn of Africa sees people work the fish trade with a tax value of 2.

I order both to be encored.

I move the army to Mocha for now.

I take achieve religious unity again.

With Mahe as a base, I can go lots of places.

I hire a Navigator, diplomatic advisor. I got trade benefits from the Timurids and I can afford a level 3 guy, that’s huge tech advancement in an area I have been devoting to ideas, not tech development., He gives me a huge colonial range bonus.

Now I can go even more places.

I send colonists to Bourbon.

I spend the power to gain level 6 Admin. We can now build farm estates and get bonus production efficiency.

3 Aug – We lose our claim on Liwa.

Najd is currently guaranteed by about 20 nations, and is a vassal of the mighty Mamluks. Plus its provinces are less valuable than Yemen, and Yemen was a stronger one 1:1. So we’ve hit the Yemeni scum hard.

6 Aug – We enter into a royal marriage with Gujarat.

11 Aug – We accept an alliance offer from Gujarat.

2 Sept – We guarantee Hedjaz’s independence.

29 Sept – We discover another counter current south-east of Ceylon

21 Jan, 1472 – Rebellion in Socotra. I still have a small army there.

24 Jan – Our colonial company goes bankrupt, I pay some money to step in and end things.

30 Jan – Socotra is secure once more

5 July – We discover Ninetyeast Ridge.

6 Aug – I agree to give Crimea military access.

21 Sept – I do the same for Nogai and grant then access. Whatever folks.

Because of the distance our ships have from Mahe, I will send out a major expedition next, and send them out for several areas and then have them get repaired for months and months

18 May – We uncover a plot by the Timurids to manufacture a claim in Suhar against us

6 July – Mocha is now a core and our best Shi’ite missionaries have been sent to redeem our wayward brothers

25 July – A quick glance at the ledger places us third behind France and Ming.

I send a diplomat to begin to process of annexing Haasa, which will take more than a decade.

7 July – We discover Kerguelen Islands.

20 Aug – I continue to get minor events that allow me to choose two sides, each of which will either lower or raise my piety with no other major consequences, so I keep raising it.

19 Nov – We discover the Crozet Basin…

2 Jan, 1475 - …And the Crozet Islands

6 Mar, we spend power to go to level 5 diplomatic tech. Our trade range increases, and we get better trade tech.

15 Aug – Temple ordered in Aden

5 Jan, 1467 – We discover the island of Diego Garcia, south of the Maldives, in the Chagos Archipelago. It has no natives.

Okay, question(s) here.

With that "discovery", do you see what it could produce in terms of goods/trade/etc if it were populated with colonists? Or is that an extra step of exploration?

Ultimately what I'm trying to figure out here -- I think -- is whether an uninhabited island is a plus (if it had some other value) because you don't have to fight for it or is that a bad thing (either practically or from a role-playing perspective) because there's no one there to convert?

In the first two EU games, you knew exactly what a province would give you once you colonized it. But that didn;t give you the same sense of uncertainty. So now you have a random chance of certain types for each place. So you might get fish for an island that used to be Naval Supplies (aka lumber) or Slaves instead of Grain from that African place, and such.

It's a plus because it takes fewer resources, which is good right now. Islands on trade routes will enhance your trade bonus at that node if you have merchants there, even if the island doesn't have a lot going for it. They also have a tax value, although that's cut for overseas tax penalties.

24 June – Qara Koyunlu wants us to aid in their war against Persia. Persia just formed from the rebel areas in Timurids. It’s very large – 10 provinces big Persia. We accept. Timurids with their money loss to us probably couldn’t handle it. They have their allies to blame!

13 July – Today the Mamluks annexed diplomatically the Najd provinces of Bahrain, Liwa, Najd, and Jabal Shammar,

15 Nov – We discover another random southern space in the Indian Ocean.

30 Jan, 1477 – We get a colonist rush for five years, increasing our settler chance and global settler increase.

18 March – We discover another random ocean area

17 Apr – And another discovery

2 May – Great news. Bourbon is now a fully city and self supporting. We order a fort here.

Diego Garcia is our next target. We dispatch settlers there

12 June – Influenza outbreak in Muscat. I can Quarantine it or not. We do, and Muscat will be money-less and trade less for a year or so

11 August – I accept military access request from Mamluks

4 May, 1478 – We are now using Diego Garcia as a base for exploration east and south

10 June – Mecca has been captured by rebels.

25 July – Socotra is now Shi’ite – praise be to Allah for guiding our hand.

We have completed that mission and gained prestige and lots of power.

Our next mission is to take Asir from Yemen.

The Mamluks also have a claim on it

6 Aug – I grant aid to a noble family in need.

2 Oct – I defeat some pirates.

27 Dec – We are at war with Persia now, Qara Koyunlu took a province from them and some gold

29 Jan, 1479 – I have finished building some other armies in Mocha/

2 Feb – Our Explorer has passed! Our new one is Sultan Moussa!

18 Mar – Mamluks canceled the access we gave them. I send them a gift and a diplomat to build relations with them

4 Apr – Our Military tech is now level 7. We get better tactics, combat width and infantry shock

14 Apr – We hear that Diego Garcia is going to also have a fish-based economy, like Mahe.

Allah calls

14 Jan, 1480 – I declare war for Asir on Yemen – their alliance with the Timuids was over. Just them and Sind.

Gujarat leaves us alone but Haasa and Hedjaz join us.

19 Feb – We oust the defending forces and begin a siege of Asir. I leave behind a siege unit and move on to Najran, where 6000 Yemeni forces gather

23 March – We win in Najran and begin a siege here too.

2 Apr – Some mercs arrived in Sana’a

24 Oct – Najran falls to us. Again.

12 Nov – Sana’a does too. Again.

27 Dec – Our combined armies with 7000 Hedjaz forces assault and take Asir.

We have a 100% war score in one year. Good job lads!

I have several options. I can annex them. I can vassalize them and change their religion to Shi’ite. I can just take my province.

The difference between annexing them (41.2 aggressive expansion relations) and just vassalizing and forcing their conversion (15 aggressive expansion relations) is huge.

So I do that and have them break their treaty with Sind and send me some ducats too!

Adal is removed from Yemen’s protectorate status.

Now our border with Yemen is secure. The Hedjaz is an ally and friend, despite their Sunni status.

Abe Sargent
02-09-2014, 09:49 AM
14 Jan, 1481 – Well that didn’t last long. Hedjaz broke their alliance with us.

9 Feb – We now have Admin tech 7, allowing Noble Republic and another group of ideas.

Which group will we choose this time?

I like:

Expansion Ideas – With its extra colonist early, extra merchant next. But it’s another Diplo idea, and I may not have enough stuff to help them out.

Economic Ideas - Give bonuses to taxes, build cost and such. The -20% build cost at the second level is a huge help to building alone.

Quality Ideas – Comes with bonuses to infantry, cavalry and such all down the line

Offensive Ideas – Same thing, helps our armies out considerably.

So what to do?

I don’t need another colonist. I don’t need to be a colonizing fool. I don’t expect Oman all over the Americas or anything. I like Naval ideas for later, but its diplo too.

Ummm

We’ll do Expansion I suppose. It has a lot of good things in there.

I have 415 diplo power after the war, so I immediately give myself the +1 colonists. Then I order colonists to Mauritius

4 March – Sana’a was converted to Shi’ite. Praise Allah!

18 Aug – Mauritius will be a Sugar province too, like Bourbon.

15 Nov – The Northern West Australian Current was discovered

12 Dec – We also found the Wrest Australian Current

8 Dec - We discover Northwest Cape

20 June, 1485 – We discover King Sound

2 July – We have integrated Haasa into our great nation.

Al Hasa – The wool trade is strong here with our shepherds an important part of life. Just a tax value of one, and thus it makes 4.28 ducats. The Arid land is next to Qatar, Mamluks in Najd and Jabal Shammar, and Qara Koyunlu in Basra.

We gained their 4000 troops and 2 ship strong fleet as well.

Abe Sargent

11 Nov, 1494 – Time for the Review

Oman, Fifty Year Review

Five decades past, my grandfather decided to lead our nation into a new age of glory, with his nine point plan. Although I have been Dapir for just a few years, we have continued his great glorious plans.

Before we begin to explore our nation, let us pause to give thanks to Allah for his magnificence. His glory and power have enabled us to grow until unheard of places, carrying his name with us. We would not have had he successes we have had without him, and our success is clearly a sign of Allah’s blessing.

The Shi’a people are also grateful. This is further evidence that our way is the way of truth. May Allah save and protect us.

One of the ways Allah has shown us is blessing is with our ruler, the now 64 year old Sultan Sulayman Nabhan. We have been truly blessed with such a capable man, and our development has gone in hand with his rule. Long may he continue!

Our heir is the 58 year old Sultan Nabhan, with a 5/4/2 ratings. He will also suit us well.

Abe Sargent

Our military might has grown strong indeed! We now control 19,000 troops, We have 4000 cavalry and 1000 artillery among them. This is more than our forcelimit, so we are paying additional for it, but our empire is too great not to have these additional men. Also, our navy has 24 vessels, and can have up to 29. We have 5 transports, 3 large vessels, and the rest are smaller vessels. We use them to patrol our colonies to keep them safe from Pirates, protect our trade interests, and explore.

We are currently allied with Hedjaz, and Qara Qoyunlu. Adal is our Protectorate and Yemen our vassal.

We have royal marriages with Yemen, Qara Qoyunlu, Adal, Gujarat, and Hedjaz.

Kilwa has us listed as a rival.

Abe Sargent

Allow us to show you a map of the area.

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1136x639q90/716/syah.jpg

You can see our grey has snaked along the Arabian Peninsula in both directions. It has not been that much though (much lower than my usual efforts). I marked a couple of islands with yellow stars because they are hard to make out of the map. The chain south of India is Maldives and the island really close to us is Socotra. (Note our low money - uh oh!)

Abe Sargent
02-09-2014, 12:47 PM
And then here is one of just the Indian Ocean, so you can see what we have discovered.

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1136x639q90/823/j8fy.jpg

You can see that we have discovered nearly all of it! We have Maldives, Diego Garcia, Mahe, Bourbon and Mauritius as full provinces, and Cocos Island is still in progress. This is our full exploration umbrella, basically the whole ocean is now known. We're at low gold, dropping about a ducat a month, because I've been pushing our advisers to squeeze development from them as much as possible.

We have the 4th best Admin rank, 21st Diplo one, and 1st military rank in the world, putting us at #2.

The Top Ten:

France
Oman
Ottomans
Ming
Austria
Lithuania
Poland
Castile
Mamluks
Timurids

The highest techs in the world. We have the best, 8 in Admin, along with 10 other nations. We have a 7 militarily, which is behind 32 nations with 8. Our Diplomatic tech of 6 is two behind the leader. Our investment in infrastructure has come at this price.

Five nations are fully Shi-ite – Us, Persia, Qara Qoyunlu, Gujarat, and Bahmanis. This compares to 39 Sunni Nations. However, we now have 45 districts with our faith!

We have the 8th largest navy in the world.

We are the production leader in the world in Spices. We also have a large segment of the Coffee trade, and have a bonus because of it.

I declare Kilwa our rival.

Abe Sargent
02-09-2014, 12:54 PM
Now, let us look at the 9 goals of my grandfather.

1) We need an alliance with a major power.

Qara Qoyunlu has been our best ally for a while. They have a bigger army, 24,000 troops, and a lot of expansion to the north of us. I would eventually want Mamluks or Ottomans as an ally, but for now, they have sufficed.

2) We want to become the premier trading nation in the Indian Ocean. There are many great nations along the area, but we want to be the dominant one.

Right now, we appear to be the first power in the area to colonize and explore the Ocean. This is becoming a reality.

3) We have to control a proper navy in order to meet our goals.

Although our navy is the 8th largest in the world, we have room to grow, and thus more drydock action should be undertaken

4) We would like to colonize the Indian Ocean.

Already underway

5) We need to fend off the overly hostile Yemen. They are blatantly seeking our elimination. Probably because they are Sunni.

Yemen is now a quiet vassal. This mission has been accomplished.. However, I wish that we has just taken it in war. We’ve had peace ever since that war, so we could have diminished our aggressive reputation, and these three provinces would now be in our Shi’ite faith. We made the wrong choice.

6) Similarly, the adjacent Najd is also very aggressively looking towards us. Both neighbors are Sunni, and it gets a little too hot here.

While we took two lower quality provinces from Najd, we never really got started. Then the Mamluks came in and absorbed them, and now we are surrounded by an aggressive Sunni nation that’s quite powerful. For strategic reasons, I would like to take Liwa. (The sliver of Mamluk Yellow behind us and the desert). Our other neighbors - Adal across the straight from Mocha, Hedjaz and Qara Q are friends.

7) We eventually want to see Mecca in Shi’ite hands.

We have not made any progress on this front

8) In light of these things, it seems necessary to build our nation militarily, as well as diplomatically.

This has been a success thus far.

9) Nearby one province nation Haasa is Shi-ite as well, and could be a good early ally.

This goal has been completed. Our good brothers in Haasa have seen fit to join our glorious nation. We embraced them and welcomed them as Sons of Allah.

Therefore, the first fifty years has been a great improvement in our status and in completing the nine-fold plan.

May Allah bless Oman for another 50 years!

Abe Sargent

We shall conclude this report by looking at our various holdings in turn – all of our areas are Bedouin, followers of Shi’a, and have a level 2 fort to protect them.

Muscat – Our improvements to the capital have brought about an increase in money and it has risen to 21.11 ducats. No holding in the Arabian Peninsula makes more money annually than Muscat. It remains a vital Center of Trade and a high taxvalue and spice trade. We have built a Marketplace, Temple, and Constable here.

Suhar – The shepherds of this province send wool to others, and we now make 8.46 ducats annually. The Timurids created a claim here but have done nothing to it. It also has a Temple and Marketplace.

Qawasim – Another group of wool merchants make us 7.08 ducats form their Temple.

Nizwa – With another spice trade area, Nizwa is now making 12.54 ducats annually, led by a Temple.

Dhofar – The spice trade is strong here, led by items such as frankincense. They also make 12.54 ducats and have a Temple and Marketplace.

Beni Yas – Captured from Najd, this province still has a tax value of one. It’s adjacent to Liwa, the Mamluks province inland of us. We make 5.7 ducats created by our local shepherds who worship in a Temple.

Qatar – Taken from Najd as well, 7.08 ducats are also made here from the wool export. A Temple is here as well.

Al Hasa – Our inner-most province, Al Hasa was once the Arid land of our ally, Haasa. It makes 4.35 ducats from the wool trade too.

Mahra – The first of four mainland districts we took from Yemen, it has a low tax value. Due to the Arid land, Fish is the good of choice here, and they hake 5.27 ducats with their production. They too have a Temple to worship in.

Hadhramaut – Another arid province from Yemen, wool has reoccurred here, and 7.08 ducats are also created around the culture with a local Tempe to serve their spiritual needs.

Aden – The local Center of Trade on the other end of the Peninsula as he Red Sea hits the Bab el Mandeb, Aden gets 12.54 ducats from its spice trade. It has a Marketplace and Temple.

Mocha – With a higher taxvalue of 3, and the powerful Coffee trade, Mocha is a very valuable province with 13.25 ducats - the third most valuable we have, and the second most valuable non-colony. It is next to Adal by crossing the strait, as well as Yemen. A Temple was built here too.

Socotra – Because of a loss to income from overseas, Socotra just makes 1.79 gold for us, total, from fishing.

Mahe – North-North-East of Madagascar is the small island of Mahe. With a taxvalue of 2 and fish, it doesn’t have a large economic impact on our area. It just makes 1.86 annually.

Bourbon – High taxvalues of 5 plus Sugar give this island some serious potential. It’s at 4.76 right now.

Mauritius – Same taxvalue and export, but it makes 4.22 instead. Probably because Bourbon has a Temple.

Diego Garcia -= South of the Maldives is this fishing island. With just a taxvalue of 1, its currently sitting at 1.19 gold.

Maldives – Here’s a major windfall, maybe. Just south of India is this island chain. Rich with spices, but low in taxvalue of 2, it currently makes just 2.97 ducats in taxes, but 16.08 in production to give us total of 19.05 ducats. That’s a huge bonus. Is this because 1000 men are stationed here? Or is it because it just became an colony this month and the values have not yet changed to reflect its overseas status? I want to find out, because if I can replicate this in Bourbon and Mauritius, then that’s really strong.

Cocos Island – The Penal Colony has barely survived. Because of its tropical nature, it just gets +20 a year normally, and -25 from tropical. The +10 from penal colony growth is necessary to keep this going.

I’m ordering 1000 troops in Bourbon. We’ll give them to the Conquistador if they cannot improve our economic structure.

I order a diplomat to manufacture a claim on the province of Majerteen, in Kilwa. I don’t want it that much, but it was the only option.

23 Jan, 1495 – Our explorer has passed. Long May he Live!

2 May – I don’t know how to continue the Maldives experience. I’ve had forces in Bourbon for three months and none of the overseas penalties have been cancelled.

One of our advisors, the government one has passed. The only replacements are expensive 3 stars folks we cannot afford.

7 Dec – Our conniving had paid off and we gain a CB against Kilwa. I want to take a province of theirs, Sofala, with gold all the way to the south, next to Inhambane, in order to core it and use it as a base for future expansion south into Africa.

I order a Temple in Maldives

31, 1496 – I declare war against Kilwa for Majerteen.

19 Mar – 4000 troops arrive in Solfala and begin a siege.

4 April- Our main army marches and arrives at Majerteen. I detach a sieging unit and move on.

2 July – We defeat a minor army in Ajuuraan and begin a siege.

1 Sept – Yemeni forces arrive and assist in Majerteen

4 Nov – Relations maxed with Adal and our diplomat is sent back. I order one to Mamluks to do the same thin.

10 Nov – Our Conquistador has fallen

7 Feb, 1497 – We get a Wave of Immigration event to gain 200 in Cocos.

10 Feb – We win a major naval battle in the Coast of Natal

2 March – Majerteen falls

11 Mar – Sofala falls to us too.

24 Mar – Ajuuraan is ours

12 Apr – We discover Fish in the Cocos Islands. Ah well. Hoping for a bit more, but we just need to get this done so we can use it to head out west and south.

15 Apr – We begin a siege of Quelimane, along the coast from Sofala.

13 June – We drive off 10000 troops in Quelimane. We have much better soldiers and technology

10 July – We win again against another 7000, but our troops are badly hurt and wounded.

5 Aug -- I win a third huge victory in the Coast of Natal and order my soldiers to board from Quelimane.

11 Sept – I win in Sofala with our wounded troops and we drive back the troops here besieging the territory.

15 Nov – After we get walls breached, we assault and take Malindi

15 Dec – I order my forces to help the siege in Lamu, and in the grinder we assault and take it. It has fallen too.

I can take Sofala and Majerteen. Do I even want Majerteen? Not really. I just take Sofala and hundreds of ducats.

I order my army back to Mocha, and leave the 4000 troops in Sofala.

Sofala – In the southernmost part of the Kilwa holdings, Sofala has Bantu Sunnis working the gold mines. With a tax value of 2, the major value is obviously the gold, not the taxes. We get 19.36 production ducts from it. It has just a fort. It is next to Quelimane up the coast, Inhambane down it, and there are some nations inside we cannot see. It will take about 5 years to become a core. With a rebellion risk of 8.7%, these troops are staying put.

Allah Works in Mysterious Ways

10 Jan, 1498 – I go shopping:

Constable in Maldives
Marketplace in Mocha
Constable in Aden
Workshop in Muscat
2 Transports

Level 3 advisor, Master of the Mint, helps to reduce inflation, and gives me +3 a month in Admin Power. With our blood money and gold money, we have enough to afford a 3 star guy. Awesome sauce

15 Jan – I send a diplomat to raise relations with Yemen.

The best targets to colonize are South Africa or Australia. They are both outside of the tropical zone, and I’ve seen how bad that’s been with the Cocos, so I want to avoid that for now.

4 Aug – I invest in a new idea- Land of Opportunity, which should increase our global settler speed.

We have also reached our second Omani Idea, Securing Timber Supplies for our ship building, and tht time is reduced by ten percent.

20 Nov – Uh oh. I am getting called into a bad war. The Qara Qoyunlu Conquest of The Mamluks. Against Mamluks, Tripoli, Candar and Aq Qoyunlu. They started it. I don’t want to leave one of my bestest allies,

Sigh. I accept and move some forces to Liwa and others to Najd. Maybe I can get it in a separate settlement or something.

12 Dec – The Mamluks get a claim on Nizwa for Tensions along the border.

20 Jan, 1499 – We begin siegining Najd. I have hired some mercs ot harass Jabal Shammar.

14 July – Rebellion in Sofala

30 July – We won it, but we lost half our troops.

15 Sept – I saw a huge Mamluk army moving to Jabal Shammar, so I broke off most of my forces from Najd. After more than a month in battle, we broke them and won.

30 Oct – Jabal Shammar is ours

5 Dec – We arrive back in Najd and I order an assault.

11 Jan, 1500 – We win Najd falls

31 Jan – We assault and take Liwa. I offer peace talks with Mamluks

I get Liwa, 184 ducats, and peace.

Liwa – taxvalue 1, 4.36 ducats from spices. The Arid area of Liwa is interior to Beni Yas and adjacent of Qawasim, Suhar and Nizawa. It’s Bedouin and Sunni. We have a 8.2% rebellion risk. I order my army here ot garrison h=it and turn it into a core.

I disarm my mercs and spend a bit of cash

Workshop in Maldives

22 Feb, 1501 – Our relations with Mamluks have maximized.

1 May – Cocos Island is finally a full province!

I order a fort here.

Cocos just gives us 1 tax each year.

Meet our new Explorer – Ya’Rub Moussa and our new Conquistador Barakat Abbas

We‘re heading over to Cocos to do some more exploring in the area around it, this time to the east and north

Qara Koyunlu has chosen us as a rival. So we can’t be allies again. That’s bad.

31 jan, 1502 – We discover the Karimata Straight, between Ajeh and Java islands.13 Feb – We have another Diplomatic Faux Pas

2 Mar – We uncover the Java Sea. We also found part of Borneo island inhabited by Brunei.

19 June – Sofala is now a core province

I send Settlers to Little Karoo – easy natives, and the farthest I can go. Tax value of 4.

Abe Sargent
02-09-2014, 08:14 PM
30 Aug – Dock ordered for Maldives. Production is down here after loss of value of Spices – province is now “just” making 14.93 a year.

21 Oct – We find the Sea of Banda and a local island duo called Buru and Ceram

18 Nov – Kolepom Bay opens before us. We find an inhabitable place called Irian on the side of a large island, that is mostly uninhabitable. We also discover an island called Timor.

20 Dec – We gain a trade dispute CB against Kilwa

31 Dec – The Mamluks were hammered in war with Qara who allied with the Ottomans. Qara took Jabal Shammar, and now the Mamluks have been overly weakened, and feel threatened by us.

I was hoping to ally with Mamluks, but that didn’t happen. I misplayed it when I left my alliance with Qara. Now I have a nasty rival on my edge.

4 Mar, 1503- I order a Dock in Mocha

We have found Barwe, the other inland province from Sofala, all three owned by Kilwa

I am moving some troops to the Indies. I have a province I want to colonize, but it has 7000 folks there. So we need some troops to clear things out. We’ll have 6000 infantry led by our Conquistador

11 Dec – Our fleet arrives at the Coast of Java. 6000 troops disembark for Banten, on the southwestern corner of Java,

19 Dec – Allah has called one of his great men home. Today our great Sultan Sulayman Nabhan has passed. We will wear memorial sash of mourning for more than the usual three days in respect of how great he truly was. He led us for more than 50 years of grace and growth.

Our new leader is Sultan Nabhan. He has 5/4/2 skills, and we are in capable hands. But he is 68.

His grandson is Umar Nabhan. His is 12, and has 1/4/3 skills.

Long May the Nabhan Dynasty Rule us with wisdom and honor

28 Dec – Our troops arrive to the shores uncontested. I order in colonists. It’s tropical, but with our recent idea helping, it should still grow decently.

30 Dec – Mogadishu was force vassalized by Kilwa

10 Jan, 1505 – I order a Constable in Suhar

15 Feb – The Hedjaz has gone to war against the Mamluks for Najd Province. We join them.

14 May – We find the Torres Strait

16 Aug – I’m losing too much money and I have to downgrade an advisor. I want to keep building. After my military built back up, slowly, post war, my costs have increased since I’m over the forcelimit. I cut our military Advisor completely.

10 Oct – Hedjaz captures Najd province

23 Nov _ Our forces arrive in Al Jawf. Might as well drop my maintained rate again!

4 Feb – 1506 – The Hedjaz loses a major battle in Tabouk and Mamluk forces are now trying to take the land.

14 March – Our Explorer has passed just as he finds the Trobrian Islands off Papua. The new one is Umar Jomaa.

12 May – I leave behind a siege force and move my army into Hedjaz territory to help stop some Mamluk forces there.

27 May – We break the siege of Tabouk after beating the forces here.

14 June – AL Jawf falls to us

3 Sept – We lose in Medina and cannot break their siege. I tried, sorry Hedjaz

6 Apr _ Hedjaz had enough forces to break the siege of Medina. It was about to fall

16 Apr – Very bad news. Allah has called his Sultan again. Our new Sultan cannot take over, he is too young, so we will enter a Regency Council for a time.

Abd al-Aziz I Burji is the Regent. He is 5/2/5, so he should continue our good development.

25 Dec – The Mamluks are trying to wrest us from Cairo

30 Dec – We arrive at the Tasman Sea and have now sailed around Australia

24 Jan, 1508 – We barely win in Cairo, but lost about half of our combined Yemen/Oman forces

1 Feb – We get an event for trading in Slaves, and it boosts our revenue

Our cash is running a bit high, since our armies have been wiped. But I’m-a wait to build something until post-war, just in case.

I am moving a few units to Bahrain to begin a siege there – they are ones that were damaged and I fled them and got their manpower back up.

11 May – Cairo falls – on to Alexandria

6 Aug – We got an early wall breached in Alexandria – too bad too many of the assaulting group are cavalry.

30 Sept – Al Jawf falls. A large Mamluk army has arrived near Alexandria and Cairo

1 Dec – Little Karoo is now a full colony! I order a fort here. Our next colony will be the Center of Trade at Cape, right next door.

27 Dec - Hedjaz lost a major battle in Qena and their siege was broken

26 Jan, 1509 – Bahrain falls to us.

We are behind -16% in the warscore despite capturing a lot of land. I can get Bahrain right now in separate negotiation with Mamluks. Why am I still in this dumb war?

Abe Sargent
02-10-2014, 09:32 PM
20 March – Alexandria is now ours

30 Mar – I begin chasing the large Mamluk army.

3 Apr – We have a native uprising in Banten on the same day that we catch the Mamluks in Dumyat.

13 Apr – We have a new heir to the throne – Nasir, a 4/2/3 person

13 May – We win a huge battle in Dumyat. I order our cavalry to pursue our foes while our infantry and artillery move to Al Karak to support us there. If I have to win this war by myself, I will

24 July – We captured Al Karak but our cavalry lost in Damascus

26 Aug – Our main force arrives in Damascus and wipes their army

I can take Al Jawf, Al Karak and Bahrain in peace myself and leave Hedjaz alone. I don’t really want them.

Sigh, what to do. Do I leave my allies up the creek? Just to get Bahrain? It’s barely worth it. I can get Mamluks to cede their core on Liwa too. And about 150 ducats.

I prefer Najd t ogo to Hedjaz too. So Im going to stay in this one.

1 Dec – We discover the Manila Bay

2 Jan, 1510 – And then the Paracel Island area

22 Feb – Negev was captured by Hedjaz

4 March – Damascus falls to us

24 March – We take Judea

28 April – Um, wow. Hedjaz not only sued for peace but gave us Bahrain. Hedjaz took Negev and Najd. Our warscore was leaping up, and I guess they had enough stuff to throw us a bone. (I would have done the same for Najd or something)

Bahrain – Bedouin and Sunni shepherds live in this quiet island. Just a taxvalue of 1, and 2.13 ducats are made here. We are making it a core!

4 May –

I order some stuff:

Temple in Al Hasa, Liwa
Marketplace in Maldives
Workshop in Aden
Big Ship in Muscat

I need some time to rebuild our manpower

14 October – Banten will be a colony with Spices as its main export

9 June, 1511 – Cape will be an ivory selling province

3 March – Another uprising at Banten

20 Mar – Defeated

3 June – Another uprising

15 June – Also put down

11 July – We order a Workshop in Mocha

24 Aug -Another Explorer death. I don’t another yet.

1 Sept – Cape is now Self Sufficient. I order a fort here.

I send colonists to the inland province of Great Karoo

4 Jan, 1514 0 I order a dock in Cocos Island

12 June – Our explorations have uncovered Pose, Menade, Halmahera, Ternate and Tidore over the last year. We have also fully explored the island of Borneo

5 July – Yemen is integrated into our nation! Allah Wills It!

Najran – The Beduoin Sunni folks in this Arid province, with just a tax value of 1, nevertheless have a valuable spice trade. It makes 8.38 ducats. It’s adjacent to Najd, Asir, Sana’a and Hadhramaut.

Sana’a – the former capital of Yemen is another spice trade Arid area. With a tax value of 2 and Sunni, the folks here send us 9.7 ducats. Sana’a is adjacent to Asir, Najran, Aden, Mocha, and Hadhramaut.

Asir - With a tax value of 3 and next to Mecca, and formerly Hedjaz land that was captured by Yemen, another Arid area, but with Coffee, it makes 10.84 ducats. This port area is next to Najd, Mecca, Najran, Sana’a and Mocha.

All three are core provinces and Sunni/Bedouin – we also gained 7000 troops and 2 ships. I disband a Galley and keep the Cog. I disband the army too. Can’t upkeep it

30 July – We enter into a Royal marriage with Persia – I accept an Alliance offer the next day

I don’t want a cross-Gulf war with Persia. They are a good ally for me right now. Plus, they had no other allies. They’ll help against Qara Qoyunlu if they get ornery

5 Sept – Another Banetn uprising defeated

10 Sept – Faithful Muslims on the way to Mecca were under attack from roving bands of brigands. We ordain to give them our military protection. We gain some piety and prestige.

10 Oct – I order a Diplomat to fabricate a claim on Massapa, the inland province next to Sofala in Kilwa – its another gold province. We adore the yellow shine.

17 March, 1515 – I order some docks built in Cape

10 May – The Mamluks have chosen us as a rival. Sigh. I choose them back I suppose.

17 June – I haven’t taken a new mission since we absorbed Yemen and gained a bunch of stuff – because they all suck. Colonize Madagascar! Take Jabal Shammar! Make friends with Kilwa! Nope!

7 Oct – Temple ordered for Little Karoo

17 Nov – Ivory in Great Karoo

10 Dec – We now have that claim on Massapa

17 Dec – We now have Military Tech 9, the Star Fort. It enables us to build a Star Fort and Shaybanid Cavalry. We update our horsemen

1 jan, 1516 – We purchase Level 10 Tech for Administrative, the Modern Theocracy. We can get another level of Ideas

It can’t use Diplomatic too, although we might really like Naval Ideas or Trade Ideas.

In the Admin category, I think Economic ideas have value. Espionage is fun.

In the Military Category, we have Offensive and Quality that jump out. Well, I usually want Quality, but this time Quantity might be the right thing. But no force limit bonuses.

If I could pick anything, it’d be Trade Ideas, in the Diplo section. 2 away from another merchant, and you have very good efficieny, but that’s a third diplo idea. So nope.

I decide to wait until I have enough stuff to buy, and I can take one then.

10 Mar – We purchase Dip Tech 7, Naval Ambitions. It increases our colonial range, and naval morale

23 May – We land 2000 troops in Tagoloan and are fighting natives.

13 June – Our Conquistador barely wins. We retuun to Banten.

Abe Sargent
02-11-2014, 06:46 PM
15 Oct – We have positioned ourselves for war with Kilwa.

I declare war for Massapa

I order troops into Majerteen and Massapa

25 Nov – I join Persia in a large pan-Asian war, but intend to stay out of it

18 Dec – Our sieges are going well enough. Kilwa is massing a large army by Majerteen though.

19 Feb, 1517 – Bahrain converts and we send missionaries to Asir

1 March – 300 people flee to Great Karoo

31 March – Our Conquistador arrives in Visayas to more natives

7 April - Our Government Advisor passed and we hire a level 1 Treasurer

10 April – We win in Visayas

1 July – Banten is now Self Sufficient. I order a fort.

Banten similarly shows no issue with overseas stuff. Maybe its because I had forces here from before colonists landed until now, continuously?

19 August – We arrive in Demak, another place on Java island

11 Sept – Massapa falls. There is a unit of 11000 soldiers in Sofala so I order our forces back to oust them

22 Sept – We dfeat the natives in Sunda, next to Banten, and I send in more colonists

20 Oct – We win in Majerteen and it falls.

27 Oct – after a month long battle, we win in Sofala. I order some forces here to support us.

1 Feb, 1518 – After chasing them down the coast, I force a battle in Mombasa and take out an army.

20 Apr – After an early walls breached, the highly valuable Mombasa falls

28 May – We win a major battle in Mombasa as they fail to oust our tired army.

We force them to give us Massapa and 156 ducats

Massapa – Island from Sofala, just a taxvalue of 2, the Shona Sunnis here make us 18.28 ducats with by mining gold. It I next to Sofala, Tete, Barwe, and some others further inland. The tropical province needs aid.

I take the mission to claim Tete, their province.

Abe Sargent
02-11-2014, 07:38 PM
1 June – Great Karoo is now self sustaining! It has a3.3 ducats from ivory and a taxvalue of 4. I order a fort. It is inland of Little Karoo, Cape, and adjacent to Xhosa and Roggeveld too.

With our blood money, we also order

21 June – Our troops arrive in Inhambane. I send Colonists here. It’s tropical, but beside Sofala, which should help it grow.

4 July – I order a Temple in Banten. The rest of my blood money goes to Docks in Bourbon and Mauritius. We have 88 gold left and are gaining 3.8 a month

Once again, I need to let my manpower rebuild

Persia is actually winning her war against the world.

14 Aug – We put down a native uprising in Sunda

15 Oct – We have finished exploring the Philippines

1 Apr, 1519 – We land in Rabaul, at the back end of New Guinea and are facing natives

10 May – We put down another native incursion in Sunda

5 June – We land on Palau on the way back from exploring Rabaul

6 July – We order the construction of a Constable in Banten.

5 Aug – Now that our fleet has landed back in Sunda from its most recent exploration, I order some of the vessel s to Cape. We will use it to explore east up Africa. Our Conquistador loads up with 2000 men and we order them to Cape.

20 Aug – We get a Gold Rush event. It gives us 400 ducats but +1 inflation

I order a Star Fort in Al Hasa

5 Jan, 1520 – We arrive in Cape and my fleet is being prepared. An explorer is ordered.

24 Jan – Asir converts! Sana’a is next. I move my troops to Sana’a and a Temple for Asir is ordered.

I send a diplomat to fabricate claims in Tete, a province in Kilwa – I don’t really want it that badly, but it will fulfill our mission

25 Mar – Our Explorer, 2000 infantry, and Conquistador leave Cape and head out east and north

7 May – We find the Coast of Namibia

24 June – Persia ceded Astarabad to the Timurids, and thus we technically lost the war with them. It’s officially over.

26 June – The Coast of Angola is next.

14 July – I order up a Marketplace in Banten

6 Aug – The Gulf of Kongo is revealed and we have discovered the province of Luanda here – 5000 relatively peaceful natives in a tropical place

4 Sept – We find the Coast of Cameroon, the province of Loango, which is part of the Kingdom of Kongo, so we now have found that nation.

15 Sept – We win a battle against the natives in Inhambane

30 Sept – We discover the Gulf of Nigeria. I order our forces back to recuperate.

11 Oct – On the way back we find the province of Cameroon – 9000 angry natives, ,all tropical

10 Dec I know it’s a bad idea - but I’m taking Trade Ideas, and investing in the first level – Shrewd Commerce Practice. It’s the only route to get more merchants – this gives us Global Trade Power. The next is another merchant. Our trade income is roughly equal to our tax and production income. Let’s enhance that!

17 Jan, 1521 – We set sail again up Africa

Let’s take a map of us in Lower Africa

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1136x639q90/547/8y8u.jpg

As you can see, we basically have South Africa and parts north east. Where the 3 soldiers are is Inhambane. Sofala is north of Inhambane, and then Massapa and Zimbabwe inland of that.

I combined three fleets to make the 14 ship on in Sofala’s harbor. You can see all of the forces I shipped down. My hope was to use one of these armies to take Zanzibar, but that was not the case. The majority of our forces are here.

I’ll disband a couple thousand post war to get our balance back to black – its been in red for a while.

My new theory as to why is because they are Asian provinces, as are we.

Oman 100 Years Later –

We have not expanded much in Arabia in the last 50 years. Only Bahrain has joined us. We absorbed the three Yemeni provinces diplomatically, not militarily.

We have three Protectorates – Ajuuraan, Mogadishu, and Adal.

Our allies are Persia. Hedjaz allied with Kilwa, and then when we declared war on Kilwa, denied both and so we currently just have Persia as an ally.

We have only taken five provinces from Kilwa – Zanzibar, Sofala, Massapa, Zimbabwe and Butua. That is our only military expansion.

Most of our expansion has been colonially.

We have the top rank militarily, administratively, and 24th diplomatically. We are first in the world.

Top Ten –

Oman
Ottomans
France
Ming
Austria
Russia
Portugal
Poland
Savoy
Burgundy

The highest admin tech is 12, and just Pisa has it. At 11, we are basically at the top. The top military tech is 12. But we are back at 10. We have 8 for Diplo when the top is 12.

The number of provinces that follow Shi’a is now 70. Sunni nations have dropped to 35.

At 31,000, we have a small army still. We have the 11th biggest army

We have the 5th biggest navy at 42. We can have 52 easily, so we should invest in a few more boats.

We have the second highest income in the world after Ming

Right now, the most valuable trade goods in the world are:

Chinaware
Tea
Coffee
Spices
Cocoa
Sugar
Fur
Ivory
Wine
Copper
Cloth
Tobacco
Salt
Slaves
Naval Supplies
Wool
Grain
Fish
Iron
Cotton
Gold

As you can see, our large number of Spice markets really helps the value of our nation.

We are the production leader of Coffee and Spices. We make 23.6% of all Spices in the world. 41.8% of Coffee.

Now, let’s explore the Ninefold Plan once more

1) We need an alliance with a major power.

We become our own major power. We could slam the Mamluks in a moment if we wanted. I would like to consider a long term connection to Ottomans.

2) We want to become the premier trading nation in the Indian Ocean. There are many great nations along the area, but we want to be the dominant one.

Done. We have sprawling trading network and have worked hard. Our income shows a lot of success.

3) We have to control a proper navy in order to meet our goals.

We could use some more improvement, despite being #5 on the list.

4) We would like to colonize the Indian Ocean.

We are far along this goal. We have colonies in almost every island in the Ocean proper (minus Christmas, Madagascar, arguably the Andamans). We have many holdings in Africa, the Indies, and even Australia
5) We need to fend off the overly hostile Yemen. They are blatantly seeking our elimination. Probably because they are Sunni.

Yemen is gone

6) Similarly, the adjacent Najd is also very aggressively looking towards us. Both neighbors are Sunni, and it gets a little too hot here.

As is Najd

7) We eventually want to see Mecca in Shi’ite hands.

We have not begun this yet

8) In light of these things, it seems necessary to build our nation militarily, as well as diplomatically.

We have done so quite well.

9) Nearby one province nation Haasa is Shi-ite as well, and could be a good early ally.

Haasa is gone

So it seems that many goals are completed, or almost so. Therefore, I am adding a tenth goal.

We have met the Portuguese. They are much more advanced than us. They came across Africa looking to dominate the Indian Ocean for trade.

10). Westernize our Technology
11). Expand further abroad. Do to Portugal what they planned for us. Expand into the Pacific and Atlantic and move into stronger places against Europe.

And now back to the Will of Allah

5 July – Zanzibar is now a core.

14 Nov – I send a diplomat to improve relations with Portugal

21Jan, 1548 – I send a Diplomat to improve relations with Persia

1 July – We invest is military tech 11 – Matchlock Musket

It enables like four units. We can build Barracks, Weapons manufactory, and we get three bonuses to units.

Our new Cavalry are Qizilbash Cavalry

Muslim Musketeer replaces our Shamshir Infantry

Large Cast Iron Cannon is our new type

Three major upgrades!

21 August - After saving up, I order the unique building March in Al Hasa. It will give me +500 manpower and +200 defense there.

1 Oct – Roggeveld is now Self Sustaining.

Roggeveld – 2.76 ducats are made in the slave trade in this inland South African province. Next to Greater Karoo, Lesser Namaqualand and Cape, I order a fort here forthwith.

Portugal took the coastal Malinese province. Unfortunately, I can’t get to Sierra Leone, next to it. I don’t want to send up a bunch of army far away from the rest of my people, just ot get a place to use to build off of. So I send my army to uninhabited St Helena.

Allah is great! He always provides a way.

6 October – I put down an uprising of natives in Flores

17 Feb – 1549 – I finish off the Exploration Ideas track. We get a huge bonus to Naval Force Limits. For finishing that track, I can now get a permanent Casus Belli against any pagans. Additionally, I unlocked the next Omani Idea. Port Security Improvements, which increase our national trade by ten percent.

I use my recently gotten money to purchase two large ships and a Temple in Priangan (From our dead advisor)

Our space cash has increased and we are now getting a ton more money each month. About 15 ducats monthly. I’m using that to fund some serious building projects here in a bit.

5 Sept – We land in Hawaii. We’re fighting some seriously upset natives. 5000 angry tropical tax value 3 natives,

9 Sept – Butua is now embraced the way of Shi’a! We move our Missionary to Zanzibar!

20 Sept – We win in Hawaii

28 Oct – Hedjaz randomly breaks our alliances.

That’s it. I’m tired of them breaking alliances, rebuilding stuff, and so forth. I’m done.

I want to send a diplomat to fabricate claims on Mecca. But we can’t since its their capital. So I use Najd instead.

My goal is to take Hedjaz out, and then Vassalize them.

26 December – A new settlement in Flores has a better tax base and it increases by 1 there

27 Jan, 1550 – After apparently removing us as a rival, the Ottomans accept our Royal Marriage proposal

1 Sept – I am moving my Explorer/Conquistadors from Ternate to St Helena

25 Nov – I cancel military access from Hedjaz

26 Dec – I declare war for Najd. We lose a stability because we have a Royal Marriage - I boost it back up

They have 12000 units in Najd proper. I order 14000 from Asir, 9000 from Al Hasa and 1k I just built from Najra into Najd.

War has begun

29 Dec – Kilwa has joined her ally. I move my armies in the south into position

13 Jan, 1551 – Zimbabwe is now Bedouin

9 Feb – We Win in Najd

I order most of my troops to Mecca

10 Mar – After defeating a small force I leave behind a siege unit in Mecca and move to Medina

17 Apr – I catch Kilwa in Tete for a large battle – 9000 on 15000

5 May – We win in Tete

27 May – We defeat Hedjaz in Tabouk

5 July – We defeat the fleeing Hedjaz forces in Negev

2 Au g- We catch some more Kilwan forces in Qualimane and set up a siege there too

29 Aug – St. Helena will be a fishing colony

2 Sept – We win in Tabouk – Their army is destroyed

13 Sept – Flores is found to be another great producer of Spices

18 Sept – Zanzibar is converted! We complete our mission – our next is to get a claim on Bagamoyo, the only land based province in Africa next to Zanzibar.

Abe Sargent

30 Oct – Mecca falls

3 Nov – Ternate is now self-sufficient. I order a fort here

2 Jan, 1552 – Najd falls

22 Jan – An army arrives in Negev and begins a siege

25 Jan – Tete is our too

16 March – Quelimane is taken. Perfect!

Kilwa is so upset at the war that they will happily take a white peace on the side.

Now its just 1:1

18 May – Our Explorer dies.

9 Aug – Tabouk is ours

10 Sept – Medina falls

13 Sept – Butua is now Bedouin!

21 Sept – Zanzibar is now Bedouin too! But our agent was discovered in Bagamoyo.

5 Oct – We put down some uppity natives in Flores

1 Feb, 1553 – Negev falls. I now have every Hedjaz province

Hmmm.. Apparently, the peace cost is too great. I can’t vassalize 5 provinces.

I’ll take Najd, Medina, and then force them to send me 50% of their trade for 5 years. And 42 ducats. And I force them to give Negev back to Mamluks. It doesn’t make my reputationany worse to give lands back to others like that. I certainly wouldn’t want it later.

That leaves Hedjaz just Tabouk and Mecca

Najd – Bedouin and Sunni, coffee trade is strong here, 6.61 ducats from the 2 tax value Arid land. We order it turned into a core. Next to Mecca, Medina, Jabal Shammar, Al Hasa, Najran and Asir.

Medina – 7.54 ducats from the spice trade here. 4 tax value, Bedouin and Sunni, Arid landscape, core ordered here too. Next to Mecca, Naja, Jabal Shammar and Tabouk

I disband quite a few soldiers – about 12000

Abe Sargent

I send a Diplomat to improve relations with Mamluks

22 May – We have a claim on Bagamoyo and finish that mission

Next is Turn Flores into a City which will give it +1 taxvalue when it works

1 June – I order a Temple in Ternate

1 Jan, 1554 – With a pocket of cash, I finally hire the replacement for our old Diplo advisor, but this time just level 2 – Spymaster

22 March – I purchase Merchant Adventures from the Trade Line of Ideas.

5 Apr – I Press a Claim and gain acclaim on Barwe, a province of Kilwa’s

1 July – The Mamluks have accepted our alliance offer. Apparently Negev was the door in.

1 Aug – Rebellion in Medina

12 Aug – Put down

21 Aug – Mamluks accepts our Royal Marriage proposal

7 Oct _ New Land Claimed in Cape results in extra tax value there

28 Oct – Mamluks broke their alliance with us. Again, this is just weird behavior. Hedjaz did this his hot and cold stuff too – Ottomans too

1 Nov – St. Helena is now fully self sustaining.

St. Helena – I order a fort here. 0.57 ducats are made by the poor Bedouin Shi’ite fisherman. But it opens up Sierra Leone. I order colonists there

Due to the large amount of natives, I load up some soldiers to send them over

11 Feb, 1555 – I order Colonists to Sumbawa

7 July – We arrive in Sierra Leone and fight off natives and prepare for colonists.

15 Sept – Najd is now a core! Our Missionary heads over to convert to populace to the one true path

4 Nov – We establish the colony in Sierra Leone and again I send a Diplomat to Portugal to amp up our relations

Abe Sargent
02-13-2014, 11:36 AM
15 Dec – Medina is now a core province too

22 Jan, 1556 – Our Explorer and Conquistador move in from St Helena to Sierra Leone.

7 Mar – Portugal was maxed already. I send the Diploma to Persia to do the same thing

12 Apr – We put down an uprising in Sierra Leone

22 May – We find the Coast of Brazil

19 July – We hold a large Ramadan fast

13 Sept – Native Assimilation event in Flores gains us 100 population.

So here’s how I’m doing exploring. I have two small fleet sin Sierra Leone. So I send one out to explore, and when it gets bad, it returns, and I hope the Explorer to the other fleet, newly ready, and send it out. Rinse and repeat, faster exploration for everyone.

23 Oct – I see a Castilian fleet down by Cape.

15 Nov – We discover the Coast of Recife, and both Portuguese and Castilian Brazil .

16 Dec – I continue down the coast and see heavy colonization by Castile here.

24 Feb, 1557 – Najd has converted to Shi’ite! On to Medina – Najd is up to 11.16 ducats now that they are a core and share our faith

1 April – Flores is now an official colony! I order a fort here

Flores – 17.26 ducats are made in the spice trade here. With a tax value of 6 (raised after completion of our mission), it’s a valuable little island of love. The chain is just east of out new colony in Sumbawa, which is just east of Bali and Java. Timor and Sumba are very close and just to the south.

Sumba is my next target here in the Indies. I order a colonist and will move men over from Flores.

Constable is ordered in Ternate

Our next mission is to have a Star Fort in Demak

I blow through my reservoir to order it right now

Abe Sargent
02-13-2014, 12:02 PM
28 Jan, 1558 – I find places like Suriname, Tucujulandia, Essequibo open far up the coast past Brazil

10 Feb – We find Martinique in the Windward Islands open. It looks like Portugal and Castile are here.

2 Apr – I order a claim fabricated on Mecca

23 July – Our fort is built, and the next mission is turn Sumbawa into a city

29 July – it looks like Spain and Portugal have all of the islands in the Lesser Antilles.

30 July – Ayutthaya is blockading us and looks to have made us a rival.

8 Oct – Portugal is also in Puerto Rico

13 Nov – I send a Diplomat to Ming to increase relations. Ming and Ayutthaya are rivals.

30 Nov – Medina has converted!

They now give us 14.02 ducats.

15 Dec – Our agent is discovered again

2 Jan, 1559 – We’ll try this again. I accept an alliance offer from Mamluks

I keep finding provinces back in the back of South America open. I’ll skip them for now. They are not an ideal target.

13 Feb, 1560 -I headed down along the southerly Brazilian coast this time and found a consistent and large area that is under Castilian control.

11 March – I chose extra colonists from a Rush of Colonists event. Bonus colony growth for the next 5 years!

12 April – Sierra Leone will be a grain province

26 April – Sumbawa is Spices.

3 Jun – We are finding open places, like St. Thomas and Trinidad. Castile in Turks Islands.

15 Jun – We put down an uprising in Sierra Leone

19 Jun – The rear end of Cuba, at least, is unclaimed

4 July – We maxed relations with Majaphit

We invest in Admin Tech 13 Improved Drainage. We can build plantations and get +10 production

I’ve been saving money for the Westernization process, but I decide to build some stuff now, just in case it’s not needed like I suspect it’ll be. I can save up later.

Constable in Flores

1 Sept -An advisor in military tech passed. I buy a level one Grand Captain to replace him

12 Jan, 1561 – We defeat an uprising again in Sierra Leone

6 Mar – I get an event – Colonial Ventures. With the discovery of a New World, we are entering our greatest era of prosperity. We choose Naval Improvements. Diplo tech cost is reduced but ship building costs are up. It’s great, cause we’re near leveling up there, and we can use it – plus saving the extra power’ll help us post-Westernization

18 May – Did you know?

We get more money monthly from trade than the other three major sources? (Roughly 30% is from trade. About 25% is from Production. Taxes and Gold almost divide the rest evenly)

In case you are not really in to the Indies and knowing where things are, I took a quick snapshot for ya!

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1136x639q90/856/go7s.jpg

Again, I starred Ternate, which is way out there, and Cocos is in the far bottom left corner. You can see the island of Java, and we have 4 provinces on the west side. You can also see Flores, Sumba and Sumbawa just east of Majaphit’s territory. All of the green to the west is just a small part of Ayutthaya’s territory. You can also see a quick map in the lower right hand corner to see briefly our explorations of the world. We are also building our military and diplo resources and hopefully will get in another advance before we Westernize.

Awesome.

My Japan game is looking like this for me, I've got the Philippines into the Indies, Majaphit entered a personal union with me, which started a succession war with Brunei. Fun stuff.

Keep up the great work! You've inspired me to get back into the game and perhaps try my hand at one of these.

22 May – And the Mamluks broke the alliance they offered us. We’re done with that. Twice bitten thrice shy

6 June – We get news that Sumba will be a coffee rich place.

10 June – Our Conquistador has passed.

5 July – We maximized relations with Ming, so I send that Diplo to Mamluks. After two alliance cancelations, I want to renew our not-hated rival. Actually, we’re still good, so I send him the Ottoman’s way.

12 Sept – We defeat the natives of Sierra Leone

15 Sept -0 We discover mid-Cuba (Moron), and its uncolonized too

6 Nov – Portugal has given us military access.

18 Nov – We have found two of the provinces on Hispaniola also unoccupied by colonial forces (Barahonas, Les Cayes)

10 Dec -We put down another native “uprising” in Sierra Leone.

3 Mar, 1562 – We maximize relations with Brunei and our diplomat returns. I send another to Persia.

14 Apr – We get a Colonist Rush event

4 May – We maxed with Ottomans again. Next up Ayutthaya itself.

3 June – We purchase the next level of military tech – 12, Spanish Square! We get a huge bonus to tactics

2 July – We purchase the next level of Diplomatic tech – level 9 – gotten very early because of that event. It increases: Colonial Range by 50, Naval Morale by 0.20, Naval maintenance up by 20% (yuck), and we can get Carrack and Caravel vessels.

I disband two army units to pay for the increased costs

4 Aug – Maxed relations with Persia – next up – Castile

14 Aug – We enter into a Royal Marriage with Ajuuraan

29 Oct - I chose to execute a family member caught for treason and lose 25 Admin power. The other option was ot let him go, but that would have weakened us to spies massively for a decade.

25 Nov –

Today is a day of great sorrow. Our mighty Sultan Umar Nabhan was called to Allah. He was a truly great man. Long may we remember him!

Our new leader is Nasir Nabhan. He is a 4/2/3 ruler. He takes the throne at the age of 53.

His grandson, Ab’ul-Arab is 13, with a strong claim, and has 4/3/4 styles.

Our nation’s stability has dropped one, so I spend 200 Admin power to raise it again. We now have just 11 left, but it worked.

Abe Sargent

27 June, 1563 – We get a great work by one of our leaders. I could’ve used it to increase our stability! If we’d only know n. Instead we use it to increase our defense for a decade.

8 July – We defeat natives in Sumba

Because of an embargo by Ayutthaya, I order our merchant from Malacca to collect instead from Philippines.

2 Sept – Portugal oddly proclaims a guarantee on us.

19 Oct – And now Portugal have chosen us as a rival. Odd behavior again.

30 Oct – They cancel military access

4 Dec – I send a Diplomat to Kongo to improve relations there

4 Feb, 1564 – I order:

Temple in Flores
Dock in Ternate
Marketplace in Demak

Abe Sargent
02-13-2014, 11:42 PM
1 June, 1564 –Let me get you a map of the Americas so far

https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1136x639q90/856/0py0.jpg

Again, I have stars next to the two places on the map that are us – the island of St. Helena, and then our colony of Sierra Leone. You can see our explorations in detail, and the extent of Castilian and Portuguese of the coasts. They might be inland of there, I have no idea of the full extent of their colonies. I’m getting ready for Westernization, which will suck my techs dry for a while, so the wiki says.

Abe Sargent
02-14-2014, 04:55 PM
13 June – We get a Hardy Seaman event and 2 naval tradition from it.

16 July – Portugal revoked their guarantee.

11 Dec – We put down the natives in Sierra Leone. Again.

4 Jan, 1565 – Maxed relations with Castile. Next – Morocco

17 Feb – We discover the Aztec

1 Mar – Sierra Leone is now a full province

Sierra Leone - I order a fort here. The grain farmers here make 2.82 ducats annually.

We cannot westernize. Apparently, we need to be too far below Portugal and we aren’t… The sacrifices we made to build our tech has hurt us.

So I make some major decisions. First, we fire our level 3 and level 1 advisers in military and admin.

We are now making 27.34 ducats annually. Expect us ot begin to develop our nation, spend tech on ideas, and build our military – navy too.

I order Colonists to St. Thomas, just east of Puerto Rico.

1 May – Sumbawa is also now a city! We get +1 manpower there form our completed mission.

We order a fort here

Sumbawa – 13.09 ducats from spices and 4 tax base.

Our next target is the island of Timor, just east of Sumba, and southeast of Flores.

Abe Sargent
02-14-2014, 05:48 PM
Allah has proven himself once again. Praise Allah!

2 July – Troops arrive in both Timor and St. Thomas

I order a Counting House in Ternate

18 Aug - I choose to fortify Sierra Leone for our next mission.

3 Sept – Sumba is now a full fledged colony too!

Sumba – 8.87 ducats from Coffee trade and 2 tax value. Fort ordered here.

Castile has already begun on Trinidad, the last of the islands in the east side of the Caribbean. I was hoping to get it with my colonists. Virtually adjacent to Ternate is Halmahera. I order colonists there. It has 500 peaceful natives.

I move my people to prepare for war. Kilwa has broke their alliance with Hedjaz. They have moved Hedjaz to a rival.

That means Hedjaz is, for the moment, isolated.

10 Oct – I declare war on Hedjaz for Mecca

Our stability drops, and I spend 200 to raise it.

18 Nov – the army in Tabouk has been annihilated. The one in Mecca cut in half.

25 Dec – In Asir, we cut down the fleeing army and it is destroyed,

7 Mar, 1566 – We finish our mission in Sierra Leone. I don’t like any of the others, I’ll see if they change post-war

2 May – It’s just fun t o zoom in an see our little turbaned musketeers with a gun in the Caribbean.

10 June – The Mamluks have added us as a rival.

25 Aug – We get +1 tax base in St. Thomas.

15 Oct – Tabouk falls.

3 Nov – We win a major battle in the Suez and capture two ships.

5 Dec – Relations maxed with Kongo

5 Feb, 1567 – We launch our first explorer fleet from St. Thomas

19 Mar – Mecca is ours!

4 Apr – We destroy their navy in the Red Sea after it flees from Mecca’s captured harbor

To make Hedjaz my vassal will cost 15 aggressive expansion relations penalties. To annex them outright is just another 11. So I do that.

6 April – Mecca has fallen to us!

Mecca – 9.34 ducats are made by the spice trading Bedouin Sunnis with a tax value of 6. It is a Religious Center, so it’ll be hard to convert them. It’s also Arid. I order a core made here. It has a level 3 fort, Temple, Armory, Dock, Constable, and Marketplace. 6.5% rebel rate.

Tabouk – The shepherds of Tabouk have a level 3 tax base. They make 3.80 from the Sunni Bedouin folks. The Arid province also has a level 3 fort, Dock, Marketplace, It has a 9.0 rebellion rate. It’s up the coast from Medina, and next to Jabal Shammar (Owned by Qara Q), Al Jawf, Al Kara, Negev, and Sinai (all Mamluk)

Our people are on the streets praising and dancing across the Omani Empire. We have taken the holy place of Mecca and the true path of Shi'a is seen clearly!

We have now taken Mecca! Our next goal is to convert it – which might prove very difficult.

I take a mission to repair relations with Mamluk and send a diplomat there to do just that!

Abe Sargent

5 Nov – Counting House ordered for Muscat

3 Dec – Maximized Relations with Mamluks and Majaphit

Our mission worked, we gain some power,

Our next mission is to colonize Wairoa, on the east side of New Zealand. When we do, we’ll get a Colonial Expansion event.

I send a diplomat to Bahmanis and build relations.

14 Dec – We get a Poor Uniforms event which gives us -5% land morale for a year

23 Dec – St. Thomas will be a good producer of sugar

Abe Sargent
02-14-2014, 07:14 PM
10 Jan, 1568 – I invest in a new idea – Trade Ideas #4 – gives us +10% trade efficiency.

5 June – Done helping England. Back to Portugal

1 Sept – I buy a new idea – An extra merchant from the Trade Track

This also gives us another Omani Idea – End of the Shipbuilding Guilds, and that gives us -20% cost for light ships

I send our new merchant to the Philippines to gather in that trade node.

We introduce Jizaya. Our piety drops but we gain 5% tax income during the reign of our great Sultan.

6 Nov – We uncovered a large number of Aztec provinces. I just unloaded my troops onto one, and then repeated that again and again.

29 Dec – We arrive in Karankawa and begin exploring (modern day Texas)

1 Jan, 1574 –

Trade Depot in Sumbawa
Counting House in Sumba

We are now making 34.38 ducats monthly

2 Feb – We find the Apache tribe

4 Mar – Maxed with Portugal. Back to Castile

England has begun a colony in South America in Caracas. Portugal has moved to another section of Cuba. No one has touched North America – the money is in the south and the Caribbean

I am the Rival of Mamluks, Kilwa, Ottomans, Ayutthaya, Portugal, Castile

3 May – Maxed with Caraibas, I remove Kilwa as a rival of mine – our only one. They are building up relations with me, as is Tunisia, Tripoli, and Morocco.

Sept 1 - With 268 in the bank, is it time?

Some have wondered if this is the Will of Allah.

Allah is a wonderful God who loves and blesses all. Oman has been a particularly compelling target of the Blessing of Allah. We show great and wonderful encouragement.

This is a process that will move us into alignment, technologically speak, with Europe. It is no different than studying their guns or cannons, an using them, or their aqueducts. Just because research and investment methodology comes from the West in no way implicates us as not following the Will of Allah.

Allah has shown that he will strengthen those who take a chance. Those who grasp for tomorrow. Oman was one such nation, and the chroniclers claim that Oman is the mightiest and greatest nation in the world.

But we must continue to grasp for tomorrow, not rest for today. Allah not only allows It, He wills it.

Westernization –

When we do, these things will happen:

Stability drops 3
Our Tech Group changes to Western
National Revolt Risk is +5%
Advisor Costs are +50%
Each month, up to 10 Monarch Power will be draw from each category.
After 2800 total power is drained, Western Units are available.

We currently have 400, 332, and 901 in spare.

We have Westernized!

I order our stability to +2 immediately – due to our awesome advisor, we have 164 ADM left after that.

30 Mar – Qara Q invites us to join their festival – we gain relations with them

16 Aug – Relations with Funj have maximized

27 Oct – I look at options for the next settlers. I like Buru. Just south and a bit west of current colony Tidore, it’;s also in the deep indies near our friends – all four islands – Halmahera, Buru, Ternate, and Tidore open into the Sea of Ternete. As does Ceram and the New Guinea province of Irian. Expect me to soon target Ceram, and the island just south of it, Ambon

Buru just has 500 natives, relatively quiet ones too.

5 Nov – Relations maxed with Brunei. Next up – Hausa

1 Jan, 1587 – Curacao has grown into a full city!

2 Apr – Tidore will produce a great trade good – Tea!

9 May – I get another unfortunate event – Corrupt Viceroys. I can take action (for 5 years, lose 10% Global tariffs) or don’t and gain 2 inflation points. I choose the first

13 July – Wow. I actually lost in Bourbon. I order our forces to regroup in Mauritius

6 Aug – I choose a national decision – Colonial Expansion. It’ll help our colonies forever!

I choose to send a replacement from the Bureaucratic side of things to replace the Governor in the Omani Caribbean Syndicate

I pick up:

Level 2 Dip/Gvnt Advisor – Colonial Governor, +10% Global Tariffs

Level 3 Army Organizer, Extra Army +10% Forcelimits

And I still have about 20 ducats a month to spare!

21 Feb - Event – Rival Cities – Two of our settlements in Buru have begun a fierce competition. They are trying their best to sway the entire province. “Competition Breeds Success” I say, which gives us 10 Dip power

2 June – Persia has gone to war and I “join” them…

1 Aug – All done with the Ottomans. Next target is…Kilwa

Time for the 150 Year Review!

Allah the Great has once again Blessed Oman like no other. We are truly special. We are ranked 2nd in Diplomacy, 2nd Administratively., and 1st Militarily

Who has us as a rival? Just Ayutthaya and Castile

Mamluks are improving their relations with us

Ally – Persia

Protectorates – Kilwa, Mogadishu, Ajuuraan, Adal (Basically, all of east Africa)

Colonial Nation – Omani Caribbean Syndicate

Sultan Ab’ul-Arab Nabhan is 44 and very capable. We are blessed with his presence. His 23 year old son , Nasir, is 3/3/2.

We just Westernized. We have techs at 13, 9, and 14 respectively.

For more than 10 years, we’ve had a stability of 2 – it’s our goal to raise it again the first chance we get. That means no purchasing any items until we do.

The raising of our army’s forcelimit has been a real boon. We are now under the forcelimit for the first time, and that helps our maintenance significantly. I dropped our maintenance for our armies for a bit, I’ll raise it again soon enough.

We have 49000 soldiers and 94 vessels

Abe Sargent
02-15-2014, 07:57 PM
We currently get:

23.63 gold from Taxes monthly
30.24 gold from Production monthly
26.94 gold from Trade monthly
14.36 gold from Gold mining monthly
0.91 gold from Tariffs monthly

Advisors – 44.54 gold monthly
Army – 9.21 (halved maintenance)
Navy – 19.68
Colonies – 6.24

So we make 16.42 ducats monthly

(Tariffs come from Syndicate)

We have the most income a month by far over anyone. We are at 96.11. Next is Poland at 72.91 and Ottomans at 59.78. Russia, France, Ming, Castile, Austria, Denmark and Japan round out the top ten.

Many of the Native tribes have huge treasuries. Perhaps I could conquer one and take their ducats. Hmm…

Abe Sargent
02-15-2014, 08:00 PM
Score:

Oman
Ottomans
France
Poland
Ming
Austria
Russia
Burgundy
Savoy
Portugal

We are behind in techs. Playing catch up should be fun!

Still just the five Shi’ite nations – Persia,us, Qara Q, Bahmanis (plus Omani Caribbean Syndicate). 109 places follow the faith, up from 70 last time.

We have the 5th largest army in the world. Poland, Ming, France and Russia have more. Russia has just 51000 and France 54k and Ming 59k. We could be #2 if we wanted to.

We have the world’s largest navy at 94 vessels. Next is Ottomans with 83. Algiers, Ming and Denmark are the next three.

Abe Sargent
02-15-2014, 08:03 PM
Trade Goods by Value:

Chinaware
Tea
Cocoa
Spices
Ivory
Fur
Coffee
Wine
Copper
Sugar
Cloth
Salt
Naval Supplies
Iron
Wool
Fish
Grain
Tobacco
Cotton
Slaves
(Gold)

We have a lot of many of these, and that’s awesome. Even with the many additional Spice colonies we’ve added, the value is still in the top 5. You can note the wild discrepancy in the two typical African goods – Ivory is very high, and Slaves are the lowest.

Oman still leads in production of Coffee and Spices. We have 70% of the world’s Coffee and 32.6% of the world’s Spices. We get bonuses in Coffee, Ivory and Slaves ,for our high trading in those goods.

Our 11 Goals!

1) We need an alliance with a major power.

We are still our top power. We skipped chances to ally with folks like Castille. Persia has been fine.

2) We want to become the premier trading nation in the Indian Ocean. There are many great nations along the area, but we want to be the dominant one.

Still done, no one else is close.

3) We have to control a proper navy in order to meet our goals.

Now that we have the best navy in the world, we have finished this goal. But we need to keep building to continue

4) We would like to colonize the Indian Ocean.

We remain strong on this goal.

This last 50 years saw us bring Mecca into our mighty nation. We have not had an opportunity to convert them – it would fail.

8) In light of these things, it seems necessary to build our nation militarily, as well as diplomatically.

Done. Top navy. Top five army. Militarily, we have arrived.

9) Nearby one province nation Haasa is Shi-ite as well, and could be a good early ally.

Haasa is gone.

10). Westernize our Technology

Done

11). Expand further abroad. Do to Portugal what they planned for us. Expand into the Pacific and Atlantic and move into stronger places against Europe.

Currently underway. We have six colonies in the Caribbean that are now a part of the Trade Syndicate. We have one in West Africa, St. Helena as well. This will continue, but for now, I want to focus efforts on the rich territory of the Indies. Although the tax base of the remaining places is not like the wealthy Javanese colonies we hold, it is still very strong. We can take great pride in it!

Abe Sargent

Alright, let’s keep on trucking!

10 Feb, 1595 – I am spending some time consolidating my armies and navy in the new world. The Colonial Syndicate has their own army and navy, so I’m just getting ready to move my things away somewhere. I had a few armies here and there in the new world, plus I had a transport navy, a patrolling navy, and some large ships that arrived last year. My new world army is 8000 troops and 22 ships in the navy. But my navy is too small transport wise, so I order two transport vessels built

2 Sept – We boost our stability back to 3!

Since we have an Artist, that boosts stability cost, as our level 2 Government advisor, I look to see if we have a good replacement with a more pertinent ability. We have a level one Theologian who reduces revolt risk (no thanks) and a level 3 who will reduce yearly inflation. That’s pretty good. But it would drop me to basically making like 50 ducats a year. You know what? Let’s do it! I could use the tech investment right now.

I have 828 ducats in our treasury. We’re alright for now. Plus, I can get more money by warring against natives in the Americas.

1 June – Ceram is now self sustaining!

Ceram: 10.95 ducats are made with the 1 taxvalue Chinaware trade here in this island in the Moloccas. A fort is ordered forthwith.

Future Colonial Targets:

I want to finish Australia and New Zealand, which will take a while
I want to connect my two holdings in South Africa.
I’d like to do more in the Indies. Sulawesi Island has three provinces Bone, Pose and Menade that are not claimed.
Perhaps the Philippines
Maybe someday places like Christmas Island and Madagascar, in order to be completists.

Abe Sargent
02-15-2014, 08:43 PM

Fascinating the way Kazan has impeded Russia's eastward progress.

Yeahs, it's a pretty small rump state right now. Perhaps we'll see Russia break out soon, but for now, it's really interesting. I honestly think I could set up EU4, leave it alone, let it run overnight, and wake up just to see what's happened to the world.

The Eleven Goals of Our Ancestors:

Our 11 Goals!

1) We need an alliance with a major power.

We are number 1.

2) We want to become the premier trading nation in the Indian Ocean. There are many great nations along the area, but we want to be the dominant one.

Done, and now taking action to keep Portugal out permanently.

3) We have to control a proper navy in order to meet our goals.

Now that we have the best navy in the world, we have finished this goal. But we need to keep building to continue

4) We would like to colonize the Indian Ocean.

Almost done.

5) We need to fend off the overly hostile Yemen. They are blatantly seeking our elimination. Probably because they are Sunni.

Yemen is now ours

6) Similarly, the adjacent Najd is also very aggressively looking towards us. Both neighbors are Sunni, and it gets a little too hot here.

As is Najd

7) We eventually want to see Mecca in Shi’ite hands.

We have not had an opportunity to convert them – it would fail. But it is ours. Done.

8) In light of these things, it seems necessary to build our nation militarily, as well as diplomatically.

Done. Top navy. Top four army. Militarily, we have arrived.

9) Nearby one province nation Haasa is Shi-ite as well, and could be a good early ally.

Haasa is ours. Done.

10). Westernize our Technology

Done

11). Expand further abroad. Do to Portugal what they planned for us. Expand into the Pacific and Atlantic and move into stronger places against Europe.

Ongoing

12). Have a monthly income of at least 100 gold while owning three level advisors in all three areas!

Let’s push our economics even further.

And we conclude this 200 year survey of the greatest nation the world has ever known – Oman!

That was fun. I feel that, right now, I accomplished my basic goal of having Oman as the Arabian Portugal. We didn't expand past Arabia, We didn't control every African province, just some. We only took a little in war. We were a trading and colonial force, more than anything else. We've reached the end of a fairly realistic parabola.

Alright, that was a lot of fun. Steam says I put 59 hours into that dynasty.

Now let’s do my usual post-game critique of the latest expansion or game. Since this was my first EU4 play-through, what’d I think?

I think they pulled out some overdue mechanics, like policy sliders and the old economic system of investing in tech advancement and stability. This system is better, because it forces me to balance economy against Ideas against techs against building, against stability. That’s a much more improved model. So I like it.

I also like the addition of new provinces (especially islands). For example, Ampom is a very important island, historically. It was the HQ for the Dutch East India Company and the location of the Portuguese in the area after they were kicked out of Ternate. You need an island like that in the game. I like colonizing Cocos (which wasn’t in before) or having additional Pacific Island options.

Now I still don’t think they do a great job with the Indies. For example, the Banda Islans are a group of ten islands, all small, in the Sea of Banda, east of Timor. In the game, they are simply a part of Timor. That’s dumb. The Bandas are among the wealthiest spice islands in the area. Why? Because a tree grows there, and nowhere else in the world (until like 200 years ago when it was moved ot other places). That tree is the Nutmeg tree, and both the spices of Nutmeg and Mace come from it. You could easily take the chain in the map, and just make it the Banda province.

And there a few places like that that still bug me.

I also still wish the trade goods could be improved. I love the addition of Cocoa in a recent patch. I’d still love to see Pearls, Dyes, Gems, and Whales. I also still want the ability to switch to a new random trade good in colonies, at a cost of power or ducats. This happened in real life frequently, as colonies moved from Fish to Cotton or from Grain to Tobacco and from Pearls to Silver.

I think colonization remains fun, and it was slower. I loved the changes to the merchants/diplomats, and such. This was not my normal dynasty. I wasn’t conquering Alexandria, Cairo, Jerusalem and Byzantium. I didn’t wage war in the Middle East for more than 100 years. I only took five provinces from Kilwa in Africa and five provinces from Makassar and Majapahit in the Indies.

I loved the additional diplomatic options too. I thought the game was well-done. It got rid of a bunch of the tedious activities in the previous games, like sending out merchants and such. Colonizing became more organic.

Overall, it was worth playing and I know I’ll come back to it again and again.
